Seldom finding restaurant descriptions compelling, I'll tell you an Uptown-shaping story:

As a young assistant manager at a 5-star Caribbean resort 20 years ago, when $1000/night was unheard of, I asked the resort owner why each year we failed to make Conde Naste's "Gold List" despite being 100% booked a year in advance. He replied, "Because we don't have a pool; 25% of the score is based on a pool." I retorted, "You've got 30 acres-why don't you build one?" To which he replied, "Because if I built one everybody would use it!" I failed to see the logic. "And?" I asked. "Because people tend to do what they are most familiar with and in our case, they'll miss the beauty. If all they remember is the pool, they’ll find one closer to home next year. Here, their memories should be of (pointing) THAT sun setting over THAT Caribbean ocean with their toes in the sand. I’m not here to give people what they're familiar with, Kent, I'm here to provide something they'll never forget."

Fabulous Five: near perfection!

vip
Dined on March 25, 2016

A friend and I who love Kent's Tavern on Kruse in Lake Oswego decided to try his Uptown Billiards Club. We were delighted by our experience. The five-course tasting menu served in the small dining room was outstanding. Each course was exquisitely executed and beautifully presented. Five is a good number of courses -- not too much, but a sufficient portion of each to enable us to enjoy the various elements and combinations of ingredients. The dining room is lovely and comfortable. Our knowledgeable and charming server provided excellent descriptions of each course and the wine well-paired with each one. The dessert was so wonderful that we went immediately back to our neighborhood to enjoy a second one apiece at Tavern on Kruse! Two negatives: It is a billiards club, so you may hear some noise and shouting from the two areas with pool tables. Heavy draperies help to deflect some of the sound, but they cannot totally block it out. The restaurant is upstairs, requiring customers to go up and down a long steep stairway, which may discourage or cause problems for some people.

Who would expect to have the most devine meal at a billiards club....simply exquisite! We enjoyed a 5 course meal built around mushrooms.....from crepes to steelhead to sirloin. This is a hidden gem of fantastic food. To top it off....Aaron provided professional/personal service that made the evening that much better. We'll be back!

Wine-pairing tasting menu was fantastic

Dined on January 21, 2016

While not every pairing was exactly what we would have chosen, all were at least decent and some were amazing. The food was PHENOMENAL, plated beautifully, seasoned perfectly, cooked exquisitely. Staff treated us like cherished repeat customers - was our first visit. Lovely experience!

One of the Best Meals in Portland

Dined on January 16, 2016

I didn't know what to expect after reserving a table two months in advance for their tasting menu, whose theme changes every month, when it came that it was going to be an apple themed menu. Boy was I wrong to question anything. Amazing meal provided by a friendly and exquisite staff in a great atmosphere. Every course was a delight and the meal was one of the finest we have had in Portland. We spent the night and the next day trying to decide which course was our favorite. Thank you all for a great evening, we'll be back!

First date went great.

Dined on November 22, 2015

First date went well. The staff was very attentive near the pool tables. Offerd drinks 3 times. Wasn't thirsty but ordered a water to satisfy staffs constant questioning. We ate in the dinning hall at 630. It was empty which was a shame because your food is really good. Though a bit snacky less dinner. I don't personally drink but I do know an attentive bar staff is gold. You succeeded. It's my secret spot in town and always helps me land the girl. Third date this next week. Thanks y'all. You're a great wingman.

My husband and I have been to Uptown Billiards before and just loved the concept of the tasting menu. This time we brought two couples with us to enjoy the food and ambiance because we loved it so much! And the restaurant did not disappoint. Three ordered the chile tasting menu and three others ordered off the menu. Although one couple complained about the pacing of the food, I thought the restaurant handled it perfectly considering it was a split dinner. There was no other way to do it. Kudos to the wait staff! Food awesome, friendly and knowledgeable service and an overall great dinner. Thank you!

5 star 5 course

Dined on October 1, 2015

We celebrated our anniversary at Uptown Billiards Club treating ourselves to Chef Nathan's 5 course tasting menu. The ingredient for this month was Chili Peppers. We loved it. All five dishes were wonderful and the wines were perfectly paired. Very nice ambience hearing the fun and chatter from the billiards throughout the venue, whilst being cozy in our curtained dining area. Very very very nice. Thoroughly enjoyed.

Great ambiance and excellent bar food

vip
Dined on August 28, 2015

Uptown is a restaurant and a bar. The bar menu is great and full of choices - not your typical bar food, and fit for foodies. The restaurant serves 1 fixed price meal, or you eat off the bar menu. Be aware the bar menu is mostly appetizers, salads and sandwiches with just 1-2 entrees. So if you're looking for lots of entre choices, you won't find it in the restaurant. However, it's easy to make a great meal out of the bar menu choices. Plus, who doesn't love the idea of playing a game of pool afterwards? The décor is period and warm, the servers were incredibly friendly ... definitely go again, esp with a group.

Tomatoes like never before

Dined on August 23, 2015

Tomatoes, not usually my favorite vegetable came alive with the likes of watermelon, oysters, octopus, ribeye steak and pork belly...mmmm the pork belly. The value of this 5 course tasting menu with nice wines made for another memorable, wonderful date night. The only problem these 5 courses have is that I can't find this level of excellence at many other places and never at this price. Thank You Uptown

Uptown Billiards remains a gem

Dined on August 15, 2015

We have eaten here many times in the last decade and it continues to put a smile on our face. The innovative cuisine and wine pairings repeatedly offer us new taste experiences which are a delight to experience and usually thought provoking. We invited Portland friends who have lived here for many years to join us. They had no idea Uptown Billiards existed but had a wonderful first time experience and will return.

Tasting menu amazing!

Dined on July 18, 2015

we came for the tasting menu and the wine pairings and it did not disappoint. Every coarse was exceptional and beautifully arranged on the plate. The server did a fabulous job explaining the wines that were paired with each coarse. I am not a wine connoisseur, but I thought each pairing was perfect. We were treated very well while there and enjoyed every minute. They take their time bringing out each dish, but I really appreciated it and had a lovely night with my spouse.

Noisy dinner

Dined on May 22, 2015

As always, UBC served us a wonderful, 5 course tasting menu. This time, the featured ingredient was sweet peas, and they were used imaginatively and deliciously. Our only complaint was the noise level, as a party was being held in the billiards room next door. This area is separated from the dining room by a curtain, which does not offer much privacy. It was difficult to carry on a conversation with our dining companions, and when we mentioned this to the server, she apologized and said that we may expect some major changes in location in the future. This issue does need to be addressed.

Hidden Gem

Dined on May 3, 2015

A wonderful restaurant tucked into NW 23rd, just off Burnside. Lovely bar with many pool tables. Beautiful wood work! In a separate section you find a private dining room with 8 to 10 tables. The menu is small and then they feature a new tasting menu every two weeks and this can be ordered with wine pairings. This week the focus of the tasting menu was Rhubarb. The courses were exquisite and the use of rhubarb ranged from subtle to tangy within each course. The wines definitely enhanced each course and had been carefully chosen. We will return and are eagerly awaiting the opening of their new restaurant, Tavern on Kruse in Lake Oswego!

The 5 course meal never lets me down!

Dined on May 1, 2015

I have sampled the 5 course meal over a dozen times and it has never ceased to amaze me. This menu was planned around rhubarb and every dish was fantastic. What I love most is that there are often foods I would typically not order, and may not be my ideal taste but I can appreciate it and respect the great flavors. There is always one course that I just can't stop thinking about. We had dinner reservations for 10 and Uptown Billiards is always accommodating and service outstanding. I typically go with larger groups 6-10 but have also gone with my husband for Valentine's Day a few years ago which was nice and romantic. Definitely worth checking out and you can stick around for some after dinner pool!

FABULOUS!!!

Dined on April 22, 2015

I have dined at the Uptown Billiards on several occasions and am never disappointed, always amazed at what a wonderful experience it is. Every time, I feel that it is the best possible combination and the most creative menu ever. Always go for the five-course tasting menu because it is always absolutely fabulous. This week we enjoyed the rhubarb menu and it was beyond delicious, every bite, and, once again, did not disappoint. Such a creative chef!!! Portland is so lucky to have this experience available, and at such a reasonable price. The young ladies who served us were also especially knowledgeable and friendly, adding to the positive experience. Of course, the wines were delicious as well and very nicely paired with the courses. Bravo! Can't wait to come back!

Loved the 5 course tasting!

Dined on April 17, 2015

Spouse and I decided to do Date Night on Saturday, so we chose the 5 course "rhubarb" tasting menu with samples of 5 wines. Rhubarb turns out to be versatile: good in a spring salad, good as a glaze for foie gras -- what's not to like? I don't know if it's hard to find wines that complement rhubarb, but the five wines were breathtakingly appropriate. For a "tasting" the food portions were good sized and I had to pace myself. The servers were great, well informed and friendly. We had a wonderful time.

Dined on March 19, 2015

We had a nice evening at Uptown Billiards. The food was flavorful and unique. We enjoyed both their wine pairing and cocktail pairings. Our server was so knowledgeable about both the food and drinks, she added to our experience. My only complaint is there was so much meat and very few vegetables....hard on the stomach after course 3. There should have been more of a balance. The décor looks like it could use some updating.

Pure Magic

Dined on February 22, 2015

My husband and I returned to Uptown Billiards for our sixth five-course tasting menu in the last two years, and were met with a splendid chocolate feast. All five courses were artfully prepared and well-balanced with their respective wine pairings. Uptown's servers were, as usual, very knowledgeable about the courses and wines, and made us feel welcome despite being the youngest diners in the room by far. Visiting Uptown Billiards for special evenings out is a standard in our household - especially when their five-course menu is this tempting.

A Portland Gem

Dined on February 12, 2015

The five course tasting menu never disappoints. At $36, it's very reasonable. At $61 with the five wine pairings, generously poured, also reasonable. Wines excellent, and well matched with each course. The five course is always themed around a single ingredient. Ours -- chocolate. Some trepidation about going overly sweet. Not the case. Complex flavors, textures, visually exquisite.
