Giving Up!

vip
Dined 3 days ago

WE have been going here for years and want to support it but they make it very difficult. Every other time it is good but the bad experiences seem to be outweighing the good lately. They do not have a designated bar tender so drink service is slow and quality very inconsistent. We have told every manager about the situation but to no avail. Besides the on going problem with service this time the food was very mediocre. Had to send back the tortilla soup. It was basically colored water. Were with adult children from Austin , who we take quite frequently and they too said time to move on! Guess he feels business is good enough but if he would fix a few basic things they would line up around the block. Hope he starts paying attention to business !

Tasty Brunch Spot

Dined on April 24, 2016

Our family enjoyed Sunday brunch at Union Kitchen on Sunday. The servers are attentive and the food tasty. Enjoyed an omelet, chicken and waffles were great, as were the pancakes and beet salad. Pretty much always good food at this neighborhood spot. Sometimes a bit "disjointed" service when it is busy. Ambitious menu with lots of variety.

Pleasant surprise

Dined on April 23, 2016

We had never been to the Union Kitchen, but had passed it often, so we decided to try it. It was excellent! The Orzo and shrimp was fantastic, as was the crab-stuffed avocado. The scallops were also good, though the"grits"(?) were not so great. Service was exceptional. We'll be back!

One More Chance...

This was my second visit to the restaurant/location. It is clear that Management knows "the regulars" and is friendly towards repeat customers. On this visit, the service was a little slow at first. The serving staff seemed to be confused on who was to service our table but the waitress was able to recover nicely with attentive service. The food was good great as was the desert. I will try again one more time to see if this restaurant remains in my stable of eateries. I will follow up after my next visit within the next few weeks. Also, I almost forgot. There was a news segment being taped the Friday night that we were there. And the segment seemed like it was more important that the good time I was trying to have in the atmosphere. I am there for food and fellowship (which includes conversation); so I do not want to be silenced when I am enjoying my evening. Again, I will give the restaurant a third and final try in a few weeks.

Great american dishes. We particularly liked the small plates. There were plenty of choices there. We had two taste entrees. The desert, a Chocolate Tower was superb.

Another Good (but not great) Night at UK

vip
Dined on April 16, 2016

My wife and I dined at the Union Kitchen with our daughter on a Saturday evening. Our chopped salad was delicious as always. Our daughter enjoyed her pistachio chicken, but my wife and I were somewhat disappointed by our filet mignon. They were cooked as we had ordered them, but seemed dry and didn't have much flavor. The accompanying potato croquette was also a bit dry and bland. There was nothing to complain about, and in fact we both cleaned our plates, but we probably won't order the steaks here again. Other places where we dine regularly do a much nicer steak for the same or lower price. On a more positive note, the crème brulee cheesecake was FANTASTIC! Our wine was nice. The wine list is interesting and reasonably priced, though the first bottle I requested from the "Paul's Locker" list was not available. Service was fine, but as we have come to expect at UK, our server seemed somewhat inexperienced, though friendly and attentive. As usual, we saw several friends and enjoyed the relaxed neighborhood atmosphere. We were bothered a little by being jostled by diners and servers passing by the small and crowded tables, exacerbated by a couple of patrons at adjacent tables who spread out a bit too much and obstructed the already narrow spaces. Although this last visit was not our best experience at UK, overall we had an enjoyable dinner and will definitely be back.

Good Food. Good Atmosphere

Dined on April 9, 2016

We were there to celebrate a birthday. The food was pretty good. They even arrange a birthday dessert for us. Not sure why the restaurant was not filled up on a Saturday night though. We were there from 6:30 to almost 10 and it was never even half filled. We had no problem with our food or service though.

Another good visit to one of our regular spots. The fish special was excellent. The wine list is interesting and reasonably priced. As we've often experienced here, our server seemed inexperienced and a bit unpolished, but she was attentive and friendly, so we didn't mind. We'll be back.

The service was poor! I got the wrong food twice. The bottomless mimosas were not bottomless. I had to beg to get a refill. It was very loud with live music. But that was ok. We asked for another drink but never got it. We asked for a side which we didn't get and had to get up to go ask for it. No opportunity to ask for ketchup or hot sauce. They were just too under staffed. It was slow, but again that was ok. We were there to relax so we weren't in a huge hurry. I have been going here for years and am a frequent visitor. So disappointed. The manager did come and took off the cost of my meal which was nice.

Over priced and lackluster dishes. The burger and pizzas are okay so if you must dine here then stick to those items. The steak, lamb, and meatloaf were all subpar. The light sear on the steak left it gray suggesting it was cooked on a surface/skillet not high enough in temp. A few of the bottles of wine listed were dated improperly (2011 on the menu, 2014 when they arrived to the table...yet they were priced the same). Unimpressed and won't return. Sadly. Paul's Kitchen was a lot better.

We had Valentine's dinner here with our daughter, her husband, and their son. Marshall was our server. He was fantastic! Friendly, professional, and attentive. My lemon drop martini was yummy. Our food was delicious. I had the meatloaf, my daughter had the pecan crusted chicken, her husband had the pork chop, and my husband had the fish. We shared 3 desserts. Rob, the manager brought our grandson some complimentary fruit, and was super nice. Very impressed and wonderful evening!

Special Restaurant for All Occasions

Dined on February 14, 2016

Was given a gift certificate by my son (who lives in Bradenton FL - he found the restaurant by googling) and used it last Saturday night (my first time there). It was a special birthday for a dear friend whose husband of 48 years had died recently. A double whammy of her BD on the 13th and Valentine's Day the next day deserved something special and the restaurant and the server, Seancarlos (sp??), delivered. The food was fabulous, the service outstanding and made for a memorable evening instead of a very sad one. Thank you so much for making it a wonderful evening for my friend. I enjoyed the food so much that I've already been back for dinner the following Monday with another friend. Wonderful restaurant with wonderful food and people.

So many choices in a relaxed but classy atmosphere

Dined on February 13, 2016

We noticed and enjoyed the ambiance of this location. The outdoor seating was more casual and loud, while the indoor seating was quieter and more adult. We were pleased with the brunch and lunch menus, both of which boasted many tempting choices, and it was hard to decide what to eat. We had ended up ordering biscuits and gravy and a Texas eggs benedict...both arrived quickly (to our surprise, considering the large crowd), and were devoured just as quickly. I would certainly visit again to try another dish!

Fantastic service by an outstanding server- she kept our endless mimosa flowing. This is a family restaurant and it does a great job in maintaining that identity. Being a loyalty club member pays off!

vip
Dined on January 26, 2016

As loyalty club members of Union Kitchen, we went on Monday night. Our server was Joel and he was great. Good service, good food, half-price wine (as club member) and good times. By the end of the evening, we were all laughing a lot. I tried to a new dish (to me) – the Shrimp and Salmon Orzo at $21.95. Huge portion and very, very tasty. Loved the artichoke in the dish, too. My husband had his “go-to” dish – his favorite – the Pistachio Chicken. He asked to substitute the linguini past with penne and his wish came true. His dish was $20.95. Both portions were HUGE and we ended up taking most of it home for more meals. We had a bottle of white wine – Deloach – and as club members, it was half price, so $15 instead of $30. Nice. We will definitely be back. With this kind of a deal, Mondays may be our “go-to” day.

Dinner at Bellaire Union Kitchen

Dined on January 25, 2016

We had a very pleasant dinner at our local Union Kitchen (Bellaire), the food was very tasty. The only thing keeping the food from being 5-Stars were the fried asparagus, they were either under cooked or inferior quality, as they were tough, or overly fibrous. Our server was very pleasant and attentive, we even had a visit with a manager that was pleasant too.

I eat here frequently enough and enjoy many of their menu items. But tonight they must have added an extra table to the inside dining area as we were sitting way too close to the surrounding tables. Patrons had to shift tables/chairs slightly to let others leave or enter. Were it my first visit, I wouldn't go back.

Loyalty Club on Monday nights - great deal!

vip
Dined on January 19, 2016

We try to go to Union Kitchen on Monday nights as we are new members to their loyalty club. We are offered specific bottles of wine for half price. We chose to get a bottle of "Educated Guess" which normally sells for $22 and we got it for $11! And it was really good! I started with one of their specials, a soup, dubbed Farmer's Soup, and it was delicious. It was listed on the chalkboard as chick pea bisque, or something close to that. My husband started with a crab avocado dish and somehow the magnificently fried the avocados. YUM. For dinner, my husband had the gnocchi (which was pretty good) and I had the wedge salad, which I very much enjoyed.
