Austin Bucket List: Try Every Item on the HH Menu

Dined on April 22, 2016

Salty Sow has always been a favorite of mine for special occasions--the fresh food and expertly prepared meats are a win every time. I seem to remember an epic burger that is no longer on the menu (one of the more reasonably priced items) but the rest of the menu is more than worth a look. This review is specifically for the Salty Sow Happy Hour. I finally purchased every item on the menu on Friday and the value was exceptional. $5-$6 per item (it used to be $5 for all) plus deals on drinks and beers meant that for about $60 +drinks I was able to have a full meal with my family who were visiting Austin for the first time. Considering I usually spend double that with just my fiance and I by ourselves, this was an awesome deal. Plus, the happy hour is every day, runs until 6:30, and is not restricted to the bar area. This means that, with a reservation, us 9-to-5ers who regularly miss out on happy hours are able to partake. Not only that, in my opinion it's the best in the city. Highlights include: Honey Rosemary Dipped Fried Chicken, Truffled Deviled Eggs, and of course the famous Duck Fat Fries. I had a Blanche and loved it, as per usual. We also were super impressed with the Eggplant Fries, which I will be investigating as a low carb fry alternative in my own cooking ;) Thank you, Salty Sow, for not only being my old go-to-fancy dinner, but also my new favorite Happy Hour!

Dined on April 12, 2016

Great place with delicious food and a great place for foodies. The service was also outstanding and it is a great place for foodies. Their pork shoulder was outstanding. It is still a bit loud and it was difficult at times to hear people talk. If you are ok with that then it is an outstanding place to go.

Dined on April 11, 2016

Our server was great, wine that was suggested also very good. Along with the food being top notch and reasonable portions for fair prices. Austin is a tough city to be a restaurant with the perfect amount of everything being that so many options are everywhere. I will be back again for the many menu items I considered.

As good as the reviews!

Dined on April 4, 2016

We have been planning to go to the Salty Sow since reading a lot of great reviews and finally got there. It did not disappoint! The rich food was fantastic. We had the chicken liver mousse, deviled eggs, salad with lardon, wild boar ribs and tenderloin as a shared dinner. We would recommend them all! The waiter was knowledgeable, attentive and helpful without being intrusive. All in all it was a great evening!

Mixed feelings

Dined on April 3, 2016

The chicken liver pate was great. The gluten free accommodation was mediocre at best. We had very limited options, even compared to the Odd Duck, its sister restaurant. We don't plan to return but will to Odd Duck, its much more user friendly for persons with gluten allergies. The restaurant was extremely noisy. My pork dish was ok and the garlic Brussels sprouts salad was overbearing with the garlic. No gluten free breads or crackers, nothing. The options for really expanding their options for those with food allergies are there because the chefs could do it and still make the food extra special. Great potential for the Salty Sow but its not there yet. The crème Brule was ok but could have a richer vanilla flavor to it.

Great food and creative drinks

Dined on March 24, 2016

I went to the Salty Sow with a couple of friends from work, including someone from out of town. We ended sharing plates - which is recommended by the restaurant. It was great because we got to try a number of different items offered. There was also a good selection of drinks, including some of their own creation, which enabled us all to get a favorite. The Truffled Deviled Eggs, which were creamy and a bit tart) and Candied Pork Belly, which was the perfect sweet and savory bite, were my favorites.

While I do not have adventurous taste buds, this place has a diverse menu that allows nearly everyone to try something to their liking. Great atmosphere if you're looking for a casual place with friends that also has terrific food. The desserts were amazing, too.

Dined on March 10, 2016

I had a reservation. I asked for a table where people weren't loud so I could have a conversation with my daughter. Hostess seated me in the bar. I asked for a quiter table with actual chairs and was seated in the other bar. Everyone around us was yelling. The front room was quiet and had open tables. Both appetizers smothered in green onions. We came dressed nice for an expensive fancy dinner; we left after 2 appetizers. Hostess can't tell the difference between guests there for happy hour and people who want a nice dinner?

Favorite Place by Far

Dined on February 27, 2016

I have lived in Austin for 4 years now and ever since my boyfriend introduced me to Salty Sow it has been my favorite place. I take my family here every time they come and I recommend it to everyone. The candied pork belly is to die for, it sits on top of delicious collard greens. Overall this place is the best.

Great food, Outstanding service

Dined on February 24, 2016

There were 5 in our party so we shared appetizers and main courses. The duck fat fries were great as was the charcuterie board. We also tried the beet/goat cheese salad, candied pork belly, beef shoulder and pompano (fish special) dishes. They were great, especially the pork belly, sooo good. Our waiter was fabulous, can't say enough about him. Additionally, 2 people in our party were married in Dec in their living room and did not have a wedding cake. I brought a small tier to serve after dinner. Our server let me decorate it with flowers in the back and then brought it to our table as a surprise. Then he showed up with a complimentary champagne toast for all of us. Nice touch and so thoughtful. Would definitely come back again!

Salty Sow - Austin

Dined on February 23, 2016

This is one of our favorite restaurants in Austin and we especially like to take advantage of their daily happy hours from 4:40 to 6:30. When we went there this time, it was my birthday and, when my wife told the waiter, he comped our dessert. A nice surprise that we appreciated. There is a variety of places to sit in this restaurant - depending on your mood and/or your companion. We like to get a table for two in the back so we can quietly talk and just enjoy ourselves. We also appreciate the free parking in their lot.
