Continues to be one of the finest restaurants at the shore , and possibly the state. It is unfortunate that they are closing for the season and we will need to wait until next year to return.
After multiple visits, the Diving Horse remains one of our all time favorites. Food is inspired, beautiful and so very good. While the menu is limited, every option is perfect. The pad seared steak and fluke were amazing. The oysters and tuna appetizers were a great start and the beignets for desert a wonderful way to end this amazing meal. We can wait for next season to go back.
Always a joy to conclude summer here!
Always a job to conclude the summer at the Diving Horse in Avalon with atmosphere, food and service the conjures up California wine country and a warm and inviting home. Great attention to use of local products with delicious results.

The food was really good, great presentation but very small portions. Don't order the desserts. We tried 2 different ones and not very good. Also, really small for the amount of $ they cost. Would recommend for a special occasion because so expensive. We had 6 people and the bill was about $500 which is a lot for a BYOB.
Our family of 8 adult foodies always loves our special kid free night at The Diving Horse!
Always On the Money
We've been eating at Diving Horse since it opened and it just gets better and better. It's really the only Philadelphia quality restaurant in the Avalon/Stone Harbor area and well worth a visit. Both the food and the service are always top notch. I had swordfish in crawfish broth last night and it was creative and delicious!
The Diving Horse Nevel Fails to PLease
My wife and I first visited TDH five years ago, taking our best friends with us for dinner. The four of us had a great meat. In the intervening years, we have made a point of having dinner there whenever we go down to Avalon or Stone Harbor (2x a year). Every meal has been as good, if not better, than our previous meals. This place is a gem... Seafood centric, with food for all tastes, including vegetarians and carnivores. Reservations are a must on summer weekends, but they have outdoor community seating for the overflow. You will not be disappointed. It is a BYOB.
I don't care for Resturants that have ordering rules ( must order entire meal at same time even at 5:30 when Resturant is empty) ) I like to order an appetizer for the table when we sit down, I'm Italian What ever happened to a Resturant that cateres to the customers not the kitchen. My rule is not to return to a Resturant that has rules for customers.
We were so looking forward to going to The Diving Horse for the first time and it was a beautiful night. Our table seemed awfully close to the others near us, the noise was really loud (and it was only a Tuesday night) and it just was disappointing. The food was pretty good but it is pricey so I would have expected better. Our service was the highlight.....very attentive and courteous.
Best restaurant in Stone Harbor and Avalon
We enjoy many different restaurants in Avalon and Stone Harbor, but none as much as Diving Horse. We especially appreciate the freshness of the ingredients - particular the produce - and the fact that the dishes are lighter.
Wow, must have been an off night!
We've dined at the Diving Horse a number of times since they opened a few years ago and couldn't wait to fit this in again during our time in Avalon this summer. We were incredibly disappointed in nearly every dish they brought out. Topped off by the inedible blueberry donuts served for dessert. Maybe it was an off night?

Food was excellent. Interior design was awesome. Loved it!
The prices were high and not compensated by the uneven quality of the food. The food ranged from very good to send it back. The menu had limited choices. This is OK if the choices are all outstanding. The sides and desserts were not. Indoor diners can expect a high volume of background noise, enough to impact normal conversation. This is OK for the bar scene but not for a romantic, special occasion. On the plus side, the wait staff were most pleasant and accommodating.
Good, not great.
Nice place with great service and good food. However, I expected more from the food considering the price tag. There are better meals to be had on the island at a lower price tag.
Diving Horse is a Winner
My wife and I enjoyed a romantic dinner a The Diving Horse. The food was excellent, service, great, and we really enjoyed chatting with our neighbors. We shared our thoughts about the dishes we saw coming out of the kitchen, everything looked delicious. This is a must-visit if you're in Avalon.
Tremendous food! Prepared wonderfully. Moderate portions .
Diving Horse Review
We've had better meals here. Our service was rushed despite the fact that while crowded, the restaurant was not lacking for empty tables. Clams and mussels were decent but short ribs came out quite dry, saved only by the gnocchi. Dessert was fair. Would still return in the future.
3 out of 4 meals too salty Meals also salty on a prior visit 4 weeks ago No manager working the floor. All young kids as waiters and at front desk. When we advised waiter about the salty food. He said he would "take it to heart". How about letting the chef know?
Pricey but fantastic find in Avalon!
When you're down the shore, you have your staples of restaurants you always go to which are pretty much "what you see is what you get." The Diving Horse is so much more than that and towers above all the other fine dining locations in Avalon. It brings the sophistication of Philly to the shore - the perfect fancy night out during a beach vacation. Don't miss the TDH salad for app. Short Rib dish and Scallops dish often leave me flipping a coin or making my dining companion order one of each and share :)
The food was good but not great.
The tables were too close together and the restaurant was too crowded and noisy. I
Another excellent experience here!
Went on a Monday night so was low key compared to the weekend. However, that did not impact the cuisine or service which remains top notch! We enjoyed the bay scallops, short ribs and chicken dishes. Flavorful and accompanied with fresh vegetables and either gnocchi, quinoa, or potatoes. Great salad appetizers and beignets with homemade jam bookended the meal. Will come again!
Very Much Worth The Drive
With so many good restaurants in Cape May, it takes a really great restaurant to warrant a drive up to and back down from Avalon. This being the third visit to TDH, it has yet to be anything but excellent. Heirloom tomato salad, wedge salad, scallops, short ribs, kit kat, and blueberry doughnuts - all excellent. Thought has clearly been put into the style of service provided and how the staff conducts themselves - all very polished. Fine dining at the shore at its finest.
Food, service, ambiance all A+. Only blemish was dessert: the "kit kat" didn't love up to the hype. But overall, quality was as expected. We'll be back again for sure.
Great upscale shore spot

Seating outside could be more comfortable. Great food and beautiful presentation. Pricey. Perfect for special occasions.
Thursday night travel to shore
It is our tradition to stop at TDH on our way from Philly to Stone Harbor (by way of Fred's in Avalon) as we try to avoid the Friday chaos headed to the shore and it hasn't disappointed. Thanks to our servers for the assist in building a suitable cocktail to complement the Belevedere. Always an enjoyable experience the new chef and new menu get high marks. The beet salad was excellent and the calamari was very tender. Both the fluke and scallop entrees were delicious. Both the panna and the donut desserts were very good. See you next year!
Absolutely the best wedge salad and scallops I have ever eaten! I loved the different textures in both dishes. This chef knows the meaning of farm fresh!

Beautiful atmosphere. Has both indoor and outdoor dining. Lighting is perfect. The food is excellent and the service is superb. Amazing dining experience.
A great time start to finish!
The food was fresh, seasonal and creatively prepared. The service was outstanding. If you are looking for giant portions of nothing special than this is not the restaurant for you. However, if you really enjoy great food without feeling like a stuffed sausage when you leave, then make a reservation today. BYOB offsets the cost of this pricey but worth it night out. Arrive in Avalon early for a cocktail at the Princeton then head on over with your favorite bottle of wine.

We eat here constantly in the summer. Always pleased with service and food. Looking forward to returning summer of 2016!
Appealing decor but vet small food portions
Atmosphere was nice though noisy. The service was very attentive bit different servers all through night instead of perferrablly having one. Food was presented appealing to eye, though each of us having appetizer whichvwere small and enter that were taste my but pricy . We did not even get complimentary bread or such to help fill us up. We had the seared tuna and the fish stew but though they were beautifully presented and delious tasting, it was like a sampling portion. We left hungry after spending $115 dollars for two
Excellent restaurant-- best in Avalon
Food is basic-- creative-- healthy-- no heavy sauces or fried foods-- service is excellent
Top of Local Dining
Thoughtful fishes are prepared with fresh ingredients. Heirloom tomato salad, scallops, and chicken are all delicious. The "Kit-Kat" dessert and the blueberry donuts dessert are excellent sweet endings.

Service was slow on a very slow night. Did not observe restaurant week. Requires credit card to make a reservation. Same menu for the last five years only the food tastes worse! This place is a lot of hype for nothing
Excellent food, good service in a nice relaxed setting.
