The Carlton Ratings and Reviews

We are new to the Pittsburgh dining scene. We were in town to celebrate our son's engagement and found The Carlton on Open Table. We had a bit of trouble finding it as we were not aware that it was on the second floor of the BYN building. The food was well prepared and beautifully presented. The staff was very cognizant of our time constraints in order that we arrived timely for the engagement party. We will definitely return.

The soup was about the best I've had in years (Beef and Bean) and Michael, our server, was outstanding.

My biggest gripe is having to continue following up with the restaurant to post points earned for the visit. It is becoming the rule and a huge inconvenience, smh.

Great experience. Great food. Great service!
Our server was Bobby. He was well versed in the menu and extensive wine list. Attentive and friendly. One of the best servers we have ever had. My husband and I have three children so date nights are sacred. We purposely book the latest reservation possible when we dine to avoid families. We want to enjoy the ambience and each other without hearing kids. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the hostess who seemed bored and irritated that she had to look up from her phone. The Carlton was practically empty when we got there and she seated us right next to a group with several children. The food was very good. The duck was a bit gamey but overall very good.
Dining at The Carlton on a weekday
Our experience was very pleasurable. The food was excellent and the menu had many delicious sounding choices. We were attending the theater, and the server met the need to eat in a timely manner, without seeming to hurry our meal. I would recommend this restaurant very highly to anyone,

Always great food and great service. Great for client entertaining.
Good, not great
The restaurant is located inside an office building so no view to speak of. Food and service were good, not great. With so many other great restaurants to choose from in Pittsburgh, I'm not sure how this one competes. I now understand how they were able to get us in on a Saturday night on very short notice. The atmosphere is interesting, I felt like I was stepping back in time a bit. It is not a bad place to dine, just not my first pick, especially for the price.
Another great dinner at The Carlton
Our second time at the restaurant. I have had steaks both visits and both were great. This time I had the New York strip, perfectly cooked rare, and finished Oscar style with crab and grilled asparagus. The steak was about an inch and a half thick, and absolutely wonderful. Our waiter was professional, and attentive, without being invasive. The restaurant was fairly quiet, but far from empty. Just mostly small groups and couples. This has become one of my favorite places to dine in Pittsburgh which is saying something with all the choices.

Always have a wonderful dinner at The Carlton, whether it's to celebrate a special occasion or to have an enjoyable dinner before attending a show or concert. The food is fabulous and the convenience of parking on site makes the whole evening thoroughly enjoyable.
I had heard good things, and I was NOT let down...
The Carlton is a prime dining spot to, easily, reach a number of post-dinner show spots (the Theatre District, etc. - even venues down to the CONSOL). I had heard many good things, but I'm much more of an I'll-believe-it-when-I-see-it kind of epicurean myself. Overall, The Carlton is worthy of the praise. First off, if you're enjoying your first time here (especially on an off-hours/weekend, as we were) keep in mind that the Ross Street entrance to the BNY Mellon building is what you want. I reserve but one minor "issue" before I get into the absolutely wonderful dining experience that we had. From an initial reservation phone call, to our reception, to our server, etc. - the staff is overly rehearsed. They were extremely attentive and adept, just overly rehearsed. As for the food, I enjoyed a Mahi Mahi dinner. As a native of Florida, my expectation is to, quite literally, see the fishing craft my dinner is brought in on before it immediately hits and expert grill. That said, the dinner entrée I enjoyed at The Carlton is the very closest I've ever come to a similar experience here in the Northeast. Upon dessert, I chose to press my "Floridian" luck, and chose the Key Lime Tart. Again, I was not let down. Finally, at the conclusion of dinner, and needing to arrive to our post-dinner show in a timely manner, The Carlton offered us complimentary limousine service to the venue. For such a dining experience, my expectations were met and slightly exceeded. The Carlton offers a wonderful ambiance and panache, but, as is usually the case for us all, enjoys a bit of room for minor improvements. As a bottom line, make NO mistake, I will be a repeat client of this establishment without doubt. They are every bit worth your time.
great service with high prices
We had exceptional service but I found the prices to be pretty high for Pittsburgh. We went there because it was convenient to the Consol energy center.
Joel was on his game with recommendations. My wife and I had seafood, Sea Bass & Scallops. Both were very well prepared as we like our seafood slightly cooked. Perfectly done ! I would recommend this dining experience to all. Being from Cleveland it rates as good as the fine eateries in CLE. Appreciate the shuttle to CONSOL Energy, Thank you :) Bill & Monica O'Loughlin
Good food. Can be noisy when full. Excellent wine list at reasonable prices.
Special Occasions Treat
Want to treat someone for a special occasion? If so, The Carlton is the perfect solution. Great food, great service and a menu with a vareity of selections.
The Carlton is one of my Pittsburgh favorites. The menu is diverse, heavy on seafood. The original Carlton salad is a favorite, though the last two times I've had it it was room temperature. The service is excellent. Prices are reasonable and perhaps even a little less expensive than other downtown locations with inferior menus and service. Free parking in the building, as well as a complimentary limo to the theater district make it a no-brainer to choose this restaurant for special nights on the town. On the down side, it's unfortunate that the only entrance is through the bar. On this particular Friday night the happy hour crowd was huge and noisy, making it difficult to work our way to the hostess station. The carpeting is pretty worn, detracting from the overall ambience of the restaurant.
The Carlton is always a hit!
This is by far one of my favorite downtown Pittsburgh restaurants. Everything on the menu is great.

Mediocre Salads, OK Entrees
Two well-overdressed uninteresting salads and two pretty decent fish dishes.
Love the Carlton
We ate at the Carlton on a Friday night before a show. This was our 3rd or 4th time eating there in the past 2 years and this was the best yet. The service was impeccable. We weren't rushed and the pour on the cocktails was very good. I had a beet salad as a starter and then had the Halibut entrée. Both were very good. My wife had a house salad and then the seared tuna. The portions were very large and she couldn't finish all of the tuna. One really great thing about the Carlton is the wine list. There are 100's of bottles of wines and the pricing is the best I've seen anywhere. Can't wait to go back.

and our most frequented. Staff from entering to leaving are great. we often stop at the bar before leaving after dinner.

I'll never go back
I made a last minute reservation to celebrate valentine's day at the Carlton. I read many of the reviews and they were all very positive. Unfortunately, Our experience was more than disappointing and we will never go back. The restaurant was definitely showing its age. Our service was less than desirable, it took a long time to get our drink order, let alone our food. The food was mediocre at best.
We made reservations for a Saturday evening at 8:30 and didn't get seated until after 9:00. Our seats were in the middle of the action and not at all romantic or quiet. The bread was horrible. Usually at better restaurants the bread is warm and soft inside but this bread was cold and hard. The food itself (prime rib) was good although I'm not sure it was worth the cost - Maybe in a better atmosphere it would be worth the cost. The desserts were way too sweet and we only ate half. The house wine was good and reasonably priced and the waitress was nice. I wouldn't return to this restaurant as the atmosphere wasn't intimate or special and the menu is too exotic and weird for me.

Exceptional food and service for a reasonable price. Our server, Fay, was excellent.
Service is always very good. Waiters and waitresses are very knowledgeable about food and wine menu. We dine here often and never had a bad meal. The Carlton has become our go to place.
Surprise at the Carlton
We eat often in the Cultural District prior to the symphony or other events and wanted to try something new. Found that the Carlton validates your parking in their building so parking is free, their wine list was excellent and very reasonably priced and it was not too long a walk to Heinz Hall despite the cold weather. Turned out the food was excellent as was the experienced wait staff and also found out they run stretch limos (also for free) for their diners to and from cultural district venues. Awesome!

Out of towner
Great services and outstanding food. I had the prime rib and my wife the sea bass. Could not have been cooked any better. Free limo to the Bruce concert was a great touch as well. I have been here 2 times in the past 6 months and will come back here again when I come back to the Burg
Wonderful Birthday Dinner
My husband and I went here for my birthday. The dinner and service were both excellent. We love this place.
Disappointing menu change
They changed the restaurant week menu from what was published, offering a much less attractive array of options and no one had a clue about specialty cocktail very disappointing
Anniversary Dinner in Pittsburgh
We were given a gift certificate to The Carlton, so decided to go there for our anniversary dinner. Turns out to have been an inspired choice. The wine list had good variety and you can't beat the prices. When he heard it was our anniversary, the waiter treated us to dessert. It was an all around enjoyable experience on a cold and dreary evening.
Food was very good. Service was outstanding. The complimentary limo service to our show in the theater district was fantastic.
