Tar & Roses Ratings and Reviews
convinced this is the only reason I got date #2...
Fantastic place to go for a more upscale dining experience. Great menu with both unique and comfort foods, and a terrific wine list. The wait staff was knowlegable and engaging. Overall a fantastic night... If you want a second date with a girl you like, book this place ASAP.
Charcuterie plate was excellent. Service was really good. Will definitely be coming back.

Good, But Tries Too Hard
the food was good but overall sense was that everything was just a bit too "precious". While I love spices, there was almost a worshipful quality to the use of spice that didn't necessarily translate to delicious food...spicing was a bit heavy handed to the compromise of flavor. Even our wait staff felt a bit cultish about their reverence for the food whch in our shared experience was not as good as perceived. Oh well.
Great food, great service
It was a special occasion and T&R is open on Monday which is why we chose it. The food was amazing, the service was fabulous. My favorite dish was the baby artichokes. The duck was perfectly cooked, pink on the inside, with crispy skin. The yellowtail crudo and grilled asparagus were superb. Everything was delicious and the service was above and beyond perfection.
Food was excellent!
Great food, great lively atmosphere. We didn't leave the restaurant will almost 10:30 and the place was still packed. Service and food were outstanding. We had the Oxtail dumplings, the charred lettuce salad and we split the hanger steak. Which was plenty of food for two people. After dinner we split the best dessert I think I have ever had - their Strawberry Ricotta Croissantini Dessert with homemade honey ice-cream was amazing. We almost went back on Saturday night just to have dessert again. We would definitely make another trip to Tar & Roses.
Love this place!
This is my favorite restaurant in LA. Everything we had was great and they have a very good wine selection. It's a bit on the pricier side but we expect that for this neighborhood. Never been disappointed here.
Blast of flavors
When looking for a non table linen, yet fancy, somewhat trendy place to eat, this is a great restaurant to experience a blast of flavors with a variety of small dishes. Larger dishes are available as well, but I prefer the smaller portions and variety of different flavors. Smaller dishes can be shared with one other person.
Awesome food, great service
2 out of our group of 3 got the Duck Breast, med-rare, and it was almost perfect (if the cherries topping the cornbread were less sweet it would have been perfect). The seafood casserole with curry was good too. Mushroom appetizer was really good as were the roasted beets. We sat in the back (covered) patio, which was quite nice. Even though the place was hopping on a Sunday night, and there were hostesses/managers constantly checking out the scene to estimate when a table would be freed up for the people waiting in front, we never felt pressured to leave, Our waiter was great, the people bringing food/refilling water were efficient, it was a very well-oiled machine. I will definitely come back to try all the other dishes on the menu (I live 1.5 hrs away). The large party behind us ordered 1 of the specials--the goat--and it looked awesome. I am a very good cook. I rarely rate restaurant food awesome and I rarely want to come back to restaurants I've tried. Usually only Zagat-28-level food impresses me (ethnic food and hole-in-the-wall specialty places excepted of course).

Tar & Roses Review
Definitely the best atmosphere for a date night or special occasion. The staff was very knowledgeable and attentive. Ambiance was wonderful. Great wine selection; menu was cohesive but had some flair to it. Oxtail dumplings are a must- best thing I had out of all. The "pho-paccio" was amazing as well.
Great ambiance, great service and great wines. Really enjoyed the whole experience and were able to dine late (10:30pm). Hugely recommend the steak and the side of cauliflower.
A co-worker recommended this restaurant. I was not impressed. Our steak was served cold. Flavors were good but not great. Maybe I am becoming too picky.

You have to go....
Wonderful take on American fare, done with the twists and turns one would expect with a chef helming the kitchen. Service was spot on, wine list approachable, plenty of small plates or larger if you wanna go that route (we went small with no regrets). Destined to be a classic.
New favorite restaurant!
The food was creative and exploding with flavor! The staff and ambiance were outstanding and the wine list is exquisite! Dessert was just divine! Will definitely recommend and return!
Tar & Roses - lovelier than I imagined.
My experience at Tar & Roses was very good. The size of the restaurant is quite small which I believe makes for a very attentive staff (hard to find in trendy restaurants in L.A.) I would recommend the potatoes, steak, and the tastiest of everything we ordered was the dessert. I forget what it was called but it had strawberry and ricotta. The crust was a perfect balance of flaky and crumble-a truly delightful texture.
The food was outstanding as was the service! I would highly recommend to anyone and everyone.
Delicious foods with an excellent variety.
Delicious flavors for the adventurous palate. Wonderful wines, and friendly service. We loved the outside ambiance. I look forward to returning, especially for the oxtail dumplings, and the braised ribs (under the smalls appetizer section). I want to go there right now. The servers all worked together to help speed up the process, and service was perfect.
OUR NEW FAVORITE SPOT!!!
We had been told about TR for quite awhile through our foodie friends. We decided last minute to go and I was able to make a reservation through Open Table rather quickly. Valet parking is great for that area. Once inside everyone was quite pleasant. Our server Joe was AMAZING!!! One of the most knowledgable about the menu and what paired perfectly with our champagne and side dishes! We already have made reservations weeks in advance to take friends from out of town there!
Menu and wine list are very creative, and they seem to hit it just right which is hard to do. Many restaurants of this kind seem to try to hard. Not Tar & Roses. They know who they are and what they are doing. Service was warm and friendly. Can't wait to go back.
THE EMPEROR WORE NO CLOTHES
After reading the glowing reviews about this place we spent several months trying to get a reservation at a reasonable time. What a waste. The food is a hodge podge of over spiced and poorly cooked items. The Snapper was beautiful to look at but over cooked and dry and cold. The Chicken was slightly undercooked. The other side dishes were just poor. The best things were the Bruscetta, but even those were served on very thick slices of bread. We ordered three types and we got each type on one piece of bread that even with a steak knife we couldn't cut to share it 4 ways since we were 4 people. The music they play is way too loud and thus the noise level to very high.
Since my husband found this restaurant, we've been going back at least once a month. We know what we like and continue to order the same dishes. The balsamic ribs as a starter dish and Red Snapper and Cauliflower are a must! The strawberry crustada or Tar Bar is also awesome choices for dessert! I love this hidden gem!
A Celebratory Evening
This whole place is a celebration! There were five of us, so we prevailed on our gracious server, Jason, to suggest favorite dishes from the exciting menu that we could share, as well as a nice wine for the table, and he very knowledgeably obliged. The selections of bruschetta -- especially the tender duck -- were excellent. We also opted for four small plates of veggies plus one large salmon dish, and every bite was divine. The veggies were nothing less than amazing, especially the fiddle ferns with mushrooms, topped with Bonita flakes that hovered in the breeze. The charred broccoli with Parmesan pudding was equally awesome. Because we were celebrating a birthday, we also sprang for dessert. Oh, please don't miss the fresh strawberry tart, and the amazing chocolate "bar." It was a dining experience not to be missed, and I can't wait to return.
Great food - great service - highly enjoyable and loved the location.
Great Santa Monica Dining
Went for dinner on a Monday night with a co-worker. Jonathan, our server made some great recommendations from the menu. The Oxtail Dumplings, Fried Artichokes, Grilled Asparagus, Venison & Strawberry Ricotta Crostada were all amazing! Service was great. The water glasses were always full & appropriate utensils/ clean plates were given efficiently with each course. We were seated inside which was vibrant & fun however they do also have a really cute patio area in the back. I would highly recommend checking this place out!
A great evening
What a great experience! The wait staff was courteous, informative, patient, charming. The food was fantastic. It was my birthday and I can't imagine a better place for me to celebrate!

First of all, I have to say our server was one of the best - super genuine. The food was delicious. To start: Yellowtail Crudo (fresh & yummy), Oxtail Dumplings, Crispy Pig Tail (super fatty, but amazing flavor). Broccoli side veggie was delish - tiny bit salty, but paired well with my Venison Loin which was under-salted a bit. The dessert was mind-blowing: Toffee Pudding of some sort, kind of tasted like a juicy bread pudding. I'm not a huge dessert person, but o m g.. it was bomb. Will definitely go try numerous times since there were so many other dishes that sounded mouth-watering!

Amazing place. Friendly staff who really cared about your experience. Excited to try their new Santa Monica Yacht Club location!
Especially creative cuisine.
Tasty grilled English pea pods; succulent octopus dish; and outstanding scored whole fish. Fish sauce a bit over-tangy for my taste, although my wife liked it.
Food was very nice, I ate swordfish and yellowtail crudo were wonderful. Service was excellent. The table was a great position. The booked was on time.
Came here last year twice in 3 days while on vacation. Back again this trip and was not disappointed. Deep fried snapper so delicious and service friendly and we did not feel rushed. Love the whole vibe.

Great meal and service. It can get rather loud, but it smells so good.Next time will try the whole goat.
Tar and Roses never disappoints.
They update the menu appropriately while keeping old favorites. Don't miss the lamb tartare ... it's unbelievable. The service is smart and appropriate. Also, in the many times we've dined there, our reserved table is always ready on time. So many LA hot spots make you wait as a matter of course, even when you have a reservation. Tar and Roses is outstanding in every respect.
Imaginative flavors, great presentation.
We started with some cheese and charcuterie. The cheese that I picked wasn't amazing, but the Sipresa and bacon jam were. We then moved on to the oxtail dumplings and yellowtail crudo. I could eat about a dozen of the dumplings. The yellowtail was good, the citrus and pepper made this a nice light app, but the dumplings were the star. All 3 of our entrees were good, but my lamb was the star. Very well composed dish. I don't care how full you are at this point, order the strawberry ricotta dessert. You can thank me later.
Great place and food.
Great place and food.
Visiting LA for a couple of nights and on a recommendation went to Tar & Roses. The food was great and the staff was very friendly. Highly recommend this place!!
Me and my wife came for Birthday dinner and were absolutely delighted. The food was fantastic! Very unusual and complicated dishes. Excellent selection of wines. Outstandingly delicious desserts. Excellent service and romantic atmosphere. We certainly will come back.
Definitely a restaurant for the adventurous!
My husband wasn't feeling any of the more adventurous dishes, but the ribeye and arugula salad was amazing and definitely enough for two. Ribeye was perfectly cooked and the dressing on the arugula was amazing! The broccolini was the perfect compliment. Definitely worth a visit!
