Delicious!

Dined on March 21, 2016

A little bit hidden but not very far off of Alii Drive, and they must have a great reputation so booking ahead is a good idea. Excellent food, beautiful presentation and good service. The tempura lobster was amazing and the sake selection is very nice.

Reminded us of Japan

Dined on March 4, 2016

We've tried every Japanese restaurant we can find in Kailua Kona. This one is tucked away among some shops, so we did not find it right away. Our search is over – we will just keep coming back here for Japanese food. We spent a month in Japan late last year. This restaurant reminded us in many ways of dining in Japan – especially the food and the service, although the ambience was definitely American. Once we found this place, it turns out to be very easy to get to. We walked there from our rental condo, but for drivers there is a large parking lot nearby.

Doesn't look like much, but the sushi is amazing! I had a reservation, got seated immediately, place was packed. I found the place through Trip Advisor reviews and it didn't disappoint. If you're in the Kailua-Kona area looking for excellent sushi it's worth the stop. Prices were good for Hawaii - rolls were in general the same price I pay for decent sushi on the East Coast.

Sushi in Kailua Kona

Dined on December 27, 2015

Sushi Shiono was good. We had an issue with using Open Table because, according to them, Open Table booked us into 'first available' seating, i.e, the sushi bar. This was not what we wanted for a family of four. Then they gave us a table finally but we felt rushed. So make to call if you don't want sushi bar. The sushi was very good and our waitress was really nice and helpful. Sushi Shiono is halfway down Ali'i drive inside s little mall.

Will Not Return

Dined on November 13, 2015

This place was recommended by a local who said it was the best sushi in town. I ordered a tiger roll, and it was beautifully presented -- looked like a picture. However, I was a bit disappointed in the taste (the avocado was not ripe, and the flavors just didn't seem to blend well). That was the good part. The bad part was I also ordered vegetable tempura. It was probably the worst tempura of any kind I've ever had. The batter was not light, but heavily greasy and thick and hard and over cooked while the vegetables were undercooked (which normally I like, but these were not crispy)-- odd. Our waitress was charming, but had a rough time understanding what we wanted to order. My friend asked for a fork and knife (not provided) and she forgot to bring them. Halfway into my meal we were finally able to flag down another waitress and get the fork and knife. My friend ordered sashimi, which was beautifully presented, and while it was OK, it wasn't great. The fish had hard stringy sections that were impossible for her to chew. Obviously others like this place, so perhaps we were there on a bad night. While I live here, I just know that I will not return.

Average experience

Dined on November 7, 2015

My husband and I went to Sushi Shiono as our one date night of a week-long family vacation. Based upon some other reviews, we were hoping for some pretty good sushi and a nice night out. We were seated on their outdoor patio, which was nice as it was quiet and pretty empty and the server kept telling us that things were crazy inside. But unfortunately, that seemed to set the stage for forgetting about us and led to just an average evening. The was no welcome or intro to the menu and specials, it took forever to get drink refills, and the servers disappeared after our food came and we sat forever before getting a bill. We ordered a hot Dynamite appetizer, some nigiri, including the tuna and Big Island abalone, and a few rolls, including their Hawaiian roll and another spicy tuna roll served with a special soy sauce. The Dynamite appetizer came out as the very last item. Not what was expected from an appetizer in my mind. The tuna was very good, the other nigiri was all average. The rolls were pretty good but weren't rolled tight and just seemed sort of average. The special spicy tuna with its own house soy sauce was quite good, however. Average is really the best description for the experience.

Great Place, too crowded!

Dined on October 15, 2015

Sushi Shiono serves excellent food, is located close to the romantic seaside of Kona and definitely has great service, very dedicated servers and Sushi-chefs. Unfortunately these great qualities of the restaurant have led to overcrowding and the proprietors have forced too many tables into it. The severs still manage to keep everyone happy but seem to be flying like jets between the tables. With lower guest population, this is a wonderful place.

While on Kona, Big Island the week of the 21st, 2015 we ate at Sushi Shiono. When we arrived at the restaurant our table was ready for us despite it being fairly crowded and people waiting. The food was excellent and all of the sushi was very fresh and tasty. The only complaint was that the service was VERY slow.

Had a birthday dinner and food was good as usual. Great service as they held our ice cream cake for us while we ate. Then brought it out and we realized we forgot a candle. They got one for us. Then gave us plates and a knife to cut the cake.

Delicious and noisy rolled into one!

Dined on August 4, 2015

Sushi Shiono is a wonderful place to get delicious authentic sushi. We arrived mid-evening and the place was buzzing. The staff were attentive and our meal was served promptly. Every seat was filled throughout our stay and take out orders were frequent. If you are thinking of a quiet, romantic dining experience, this may not be for you. It was noisy as other reviewers have said, but the service and menu easily make up for the din. I look forward to our next visit

We had a great time at Sushi Shiono. The sushi was great (the Pacific Oysters!), our waitress was fantastic. She knew the sake list inside and out and was able to recommend sake based on our preferences. The atmosphere is a bit underwhelming (bright lights, pretty noisy) but the food and service more than make up for it.

Great Sushi

Dined on June 24, 2015

Fresh fish and delicious pupus. Sushi was superb, and very fresh. Indicative of locally purchased seafood products. Their hamachi kama and miso butterfish was phenomenal, went great with the ice cold Sapporos! The service was outstanding. Our waitress was on point, also, other waitresses who were serving other sections came over to help and asked if we needed drinks when the glass went dry. Great teamwork, and friendly atmosphere. Awesome spot

Fun Spot for Sushi!

Dined on May 21, 2015

On the smaller side with dining tables and a sushi counter but heard all about it and finally made our way there. Cool sushi rolls with a good variety of items and although it wasn't overly busy, dishes were sent out quick! Friendly service and observed a team effort with all of the tables, which is always great to see...we'll be back and recommend to people - Mahalo!

I have been a regular patron here for years, stopping by whenever I visit Kailua-Kona. The staff are very friendly and attentive, the food is delicious, seafood is very fresh, and prices are reasonable. It's in a very convenient location, with ample parking. Post sushi, you can walk around beautiful Alii Drive and enjoy some nightlife. Definitely the place to go if you are in the mood for sushi in Kailua-Kona.
