One of the most important restaurants of 2013 by Zagat Magazine!
The Commander's Family of Restaurants returns to the French Quarter, where the family business began in the 1950's, with our Spirited Restaurant - SoBou. We're South of Bourbon (ok - it's really southeast), in the land of civilized drinking and worlds away from the oversized beers and bad frozen drinks. Our modern Creole saloon is a Louisiana-centric and street food inspired restaurant with a beverage focus.

Attempts nouveau cajun/cre ole, but just doesn't really pull it off. Novelty items such as "premium" wine dispenser and table-side serve-yourself draft beer at some tables, are relatively expensive and not really worth it. Overall, a mediocre experience.

SoBou is a very cool space with a very interesting menu! Everything we ate was delicious. The tuna ice cream cones were excellent!
Overwhelmed kitchen, with empty tables
The setting was there the experience could have been great however....... after waiting 45mins for our appetizer (which was delicious) we waited another 45mins for a second appetizer and mains which unfortunately never arrived, we couldnt keep waiting and the server couldnt tell us how long the wait would be. We looked around the restaurant and there were no meals on any of the occupied tables, so we decided to cut our losses and head to the nearest hole in the wall. A shame as the setting was there the food we did receive delicious however the wait was too long, would hate to see the place when all the tables are full.
Upscale Bistro food
We enjoyed a sampling of several menu items. I recommend sharing and trying several different dishes. Loved the ahi ice cream cones, sweet potato beignets, fries, crawfish salad and wines were enjoyable as well. Would certainly come back when in NOLA.
Go for brunch
Great brunch options that mixed both lunch and breakfast together. Everyone in our party enjoyed the food and the live entertainment.
While the scenery and ambiance was wonderful, the food and service was not what it was hyped up to be. Our waitress would hardly ever come to check on us, the crawfish "bisque" was not a bisque at all and was more of a crawfish gumbo that had been completely puréed. The sweet potato beignets were merely hush puppies, the softshell crab and crawfish tacos were pretty much 100% avocado with one fried shrimp in it. I was not impressed.
Tries too hard to be innovative
Food tasted good, however we were disappointed by very small portions (for example, 3 shrimp "pinchos" cost $10!?) Tuna appetizer had too much going on with the ice cream on top and you could not even taste the tuna subsequently. Highlight was the pork skins...go have a drink and eat these while at the bar for a snack instead of wasting the money on dinner.

Twice in a row!
We loved each dish at SoBou, So we ate there a second day! Our favorites: the tuna cones- so delicious, with avocado ice on top..,so creative. The slider burger was tasty, and the crawfish bisque was amazing- we had that both days. I enjoyed my corn salad- so crisp and fresh. The crowning glory? The BEST bread pudding! Order early- it takes 20 minutes, as it's made fresh for you...it was magnificent! Our server was superb, had good recommendations, and everything was perfect. Highly recommended.
Great FQ Spot
There is so much bad, overpriced food in the French Quarter that it is great to find a spot that provides great food and service at a good price point. The restaurant is part of the Commander's Palace family, and that quality is reflected in the food, the space and the service. The menu is small, but everything we had was well done. The cocktail list may be more interesting that the food menu!
We loved the crawfish bisque, and the tuna cones w/avocado ice. Our server had excellent recommendations, too. So... We went twice!
Food was ok. Appetizers seemed to be enjoyed by our party of 4, but the entrees were mediocre at best. But the real problem is the wine list. Check VINTAGE carefully. They seemed very clueless why this would matter. Menu says 09 Jordan Cab, but brought 2012. I'm not a wine snob - but come on....

Good presentation and quality, creative
SoBou offers interesting and unique interpretations of traditional Creole/Cajun cuisines. The food selection isn't huge but carefully considered and what we had was excellent. It was an early dinner time, so we were among the only ones dining at first, but the place filled as time went by. There is a wide selection of spirits, liqutors, and wine.

Food was exceptional for lunch. Not a large menu but what they had was very good. Not sure I would return because of the limited lunch choices. Second time there.

Number of entrées is limited to five but the food was delicious and the service was fantastic. Great atmosphere and perfect menu for New Orleans. SoBou is a great place for dinner.
Good brunch spot
Place was nice and had great drinks. The soup and gumbo were great. All of the entrees we had were very mediocre. They also do not have bottomless mimosas like some websites said they did
Unique food and spirits, service was very good, soft shell crawfish was great as were other selections. It can be somewhat loud.

Paying the bill is a nightmare. Just a weird experience that the waiter commented that day old ingredients are used in some of the dishes.
Bad Easter brunch
I had chosen this place to bring my out of town family for Easter brunch, it was a very dissatisfying experience. Our waitres was very kind but the food took forever, she didn't bring out our appetizer early, and when we did get our food they were all lukewarm. I had the herb and mushroom Bread pudding and it was just unbelievably salty. So so salty I couldn't finish it and I had horrible heart burn for the rest of the day. Also my parents asked if their crawfish bomb was big enough to split and our waitress said yes and when it came out it was the tiniest dish ever, and lukewarm. The French toast they had that day has this awful rum Carmel sauce that tasted like it had absorbed a bunch of the plastic quart containers they held it in. The sauce was so chemical tasting we didn't even eat the lukewarm French toast cause it tasted to bad. My party of five left disappointed and still hungry. Very poor experience service and food wise.
Fantastic Food but prepare to wait..
Our server was very kind and happy and did an amazing job. The place was cold and the food took a over an hour. We were about to leave when the food came. I am glad we stayed because the food was amazing. The french toast is super rich but I like that. I had the pork shank and it was very tender and flavorful. I would definitely go back but I would put in my order as soon as possible and not come too hungry cause you will have to wait.

The boudin balls and sweet potatoes beignets were to die for! As well the bread pudding. We had a brand new waitress or I'd rate that higher. She was just new, not bad. Trying hard.

I ordered a lemonade and did not receive until 15 minutes later. Overall, the food was good and so was the aesthetic.

Our current favorite in NOLA. Very tasty. If you have not yet tried it you really should. If you enjoy good (fantastic) decor and environment and good drinks and food that is inventive and interesting you should try it. We love it for lunch. Just very very cool as well which is nice.
The food was just so-so. We had to send the fries back because they were cold, and the waitress never once asked to refill our drinks.
This was my first visit to SoBou. The service was great and the food impeccable. I loved the location and I would definitely recommend it to others and I would return!

Great overall experience. Would highly recommend.
Amazing food especially the tapas! The sweet potato beignets and the ice cream tuna tartare cones are Devine! Swanky ambiance, perfect for groups or date night. Reminds me of many NYC hot spots. I'll be back on my next visit to NOLA!
They went the extra mile to make my niece's 25th birthday, and first trip to the city, a huge success! Food was so delicious ( must order sweet potato beignets ) and the 25 cent Martinis are the best value in town! Our whole family loves this place.

This place went above and beyond even our raised expectations. The sweet potato beignets were especially phenomenal, but really so was everything else. The only thing we weren't wild about (but it still wasn't bad) was the tuna cone with avocado ice cream - it actually would have been better plated without the cone. But I haven't enjoyed a meal so much in a long long time!
Extraordinary and FUN!
Extraordinary and FUN!
Had read recommendations for SoBou - and they were all right on the money. Great atmosphere. Great service. Our waitperson was terrific in explaining the menu in just enough detail. Amazing cocktails. Interesting (new but not too different), delicious food. Go with a group and try every appetizer. Tuna cones! Sweet potato beignets! Aaah. Loved the Geaux Fish and the bread pudding too.
sweet potato beignet was the best
Between a friend and myself, we shared 3 small plates - the sweet potato beignets (waitress allowed us to get a half-order, which was 2 beignets), the shrimp & tasso Pinchos, and salad. The sweet potato beignets were the best of the 3 dishes, though all were very tasty and had a lot of flavor.
lovely food, great cocktails - nice option for new orleansesque food
This meal was probably the best of the many great meals we enjoyed in New Orleans. Our delightful server suggested we enjoy a bunch of appetizers instead of ordering entrees.....we took her advice and were blown away. We shared about six appetizers and two desserts.....each one was outstanding. I recommend SoBou highly!!
food is very good here at Sobou. the gumbo was excellent as was the fish dish. the steak was a bit tough. the design of the dining room is very attractive and pleasing to the eye.
