Scratch (Mtn View) Ratings and Reviews
All the other reviews are right
As per all of the other reviews, the food was OK - massive portions - sides are almost a meal in themselves!! Service was very slow, but the beer was good Would go again
The service had a lot to be desired. Our food was not delivered all at the same time. We suspect that is because the waitress did not correctly order the meals. Sauces were requested 'on the side' during the order, but were not delivered until requested. The fish fry had lots of batter and little fish. This was not a great 'first' impression and it will be a long time before we get our 'second' impression.
Good for friend or business lunch
Good food, good service, reasonably priced. Very nice atmosphere, but almost no handicapped parking and a long walk from available parking on a Friday at lunchtime. Asked for "crisp" fries, and got soggy, but the rest of the food was very good. Waitperson was very attentive but not pushy. I'd go again, and recommend for a nice weekday lunch spot.
food was great but our server was not very smiley and did give off a good vibe.
DO NOT eat here for brunch. Food is barely adequate. The "fried chicken" is hands down the worst ever. I use quotes because they do not serve true brined, bone in, skin on fried chicken. They take a boneless skinless chicken breast, dip it in batter and fry it. Result is tasteless. I was expecting the dinner version, which is fine. But for whatever reason, they make an alternate and again, tasteless version for brunch. I regret not asking management to remove it from my bill as I could not eat it.
nice date night dinner
Went here on a long delayed date night away from the kids. Service was attentive. Food was consistently good. Crazy big portioned Caesar salad - with a notable California avocado flair. My mahi mahi wasn't particularly remarkable but solid. My wife's sea scallops was the better choice. Most notably - both of our red wine selections by the glass were outstanding.. Now if only I could remember what we ordered exactly.
Trendy and Tasty
Great food and very trendy scene. This certainly isn't a place to go get comfort food, but the ambiance is great for getting a slightly dressier meal and drinks with friends or coworkers. I wouldn't say the ambiance is great for romance, but there were definitely several couples on dates there when I was. Lots of options for vegetarians (appetizers, entrees, and sides) and options to make those vegan.
Calamari salad was very good. As was the Pepperoni Flatbread!!

My friend and I returned especially for your mushroom flatbread. It is outstanding! We both had fish dishes and they were very good also. Inconvenient that you can't just automatically try all three of the sauces though or that one cannot order only dark meat fried chicken. For awhile our waiter came over so many times that it became annoying. Eventually he got the message and settled down. Otherwise it was a very good meal, noise and all.
music too loud
Noisy. hard to talk and be heard . they need to turn it down
I've lived in Mountain View for over a year and never went to Scratch until the other night. My family was visiting and I wanted to take them somewhere relatively nice and Cascal was too busy. I went in not really knowing what to expect, I felt like some of the reviews on here were pretty mixed. My family and I were pleasantly surprised. I had the scallops which were divine and everyone else enjoyed their meals as well. It's not amazing, but it's definitely very good.
fresh cuisine in a warm and welcoming atmosphere
We had a lovely dinner this week at Scratch. The hostess was welcoming and sat our group in a nice booth in the quieter section of the restaurant. Our waiter was friendly and knowledgeable. And the food, of course, was terrific. Many of us chose the roasted chicken with mashed potatoes and vegetables. Everything was perfect - tender and crisp vegetables, creamy but not too rich potatoes and moist delicious chicken. Our waiter topped off the evening with a special dessert, with his complements, for one of our guests - a very pregnant mom-to-be. That was an unexpected treat. Thank you Scratch for a nice evening.
Our meals at Scratch never disappoint.
Scratch is a steady Eddy - always tasty, great service, and able to meet the needs of diners with food allergies. We eat there monthly, and have never been disappointed.
Open for Sunday lunch
We needed a lunch place in Mountain View on a Sunday; Scratch had open tables at Noon. Our group was split, half ordering lunch half ordering breakfast. Everyone happy!

Had the ribs they were great. The drinks menu looks amazing too. Beer glasses can be 20oz they were too small.
Love the ambiance, great vibe! However, not impressed with how the food tastes. If you love food, don't expect to be wowed at Scratch. However, if you just want to grab a bite and drinks with friends and want a cool area with a nice ambiance, then it's a great spot to hang out. Other than that, for the price of the entrees... Definitely can go elsewhere for more delicious food!
High Gloss bar and restaurant worth the splurge.
Very good wine list, with some out of the ordinary and excellent local wines. Excellent food. Great for taking a business group to. Lots of glass and polish, dark wood, lots of light. Ambiance is high energy, low pressure. A very nice place for a little splurge.
In a town like Mountain View, I was hoping for a more "boutique" experience than what I got. I ordered biscuits and gravy - they came with andouille sausage on top (not cut up in the gravy) and, while the gravy was tasty, it was lacking in quantity. Perhaps that's what I get for ordering an unhealthy breakfast in health-conscious California. The shining star of the meal was a fruit cup that arrived with my biscuits; it had oranges, grapefruit, strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries and all the fruit was perfectly ripe and delicious. We ordered bloody Marys and they were average size but overpriced at $14 or so. The sign outside the restaurant looked cool and trendy but the ambiance inside was lacking; more like a slightly modern Denny's than a "fit for foodies" type of place. With so many other restaurants in the area that looked interesting, we won't be back to this one.
Very "restaurant in a hotel" vibe
Very "restaurant in a hotel" vibe
Food & Service Great
Our waiter (don't remember his name, but receipt shows Xavier) was awesome! Very friendly and attentive. Food was great - mushroom flatbread, Ahi Tuna Nicoise, pan seared Ahi Tuna, Simple fish and cauliflower veggie dish. We also liked the privacy of the high walls around our booth. Expensive though. Still, would go back for special occasion.
In general, really nice ambiance - refined interior decor yet comfortable, excellent service. This place touts its comfort food. Honestly, it's all overpriced. Some of our dishes were a hit; some were not. My daughter loved her grilled cheese sandwich & fries. My mom and I enjoyed the fish special which was mahi mahi, along with the sides that came with it. My husband was meh about the BBQ ribs. Not the most tender -although decently so - and overtaken by BBQ sauce that covered each rib. Just not worth the $30+ price tag. We ordered 2 sides. The Brussels sprouts were a big fail. They were not cooked enough so were way too hard & crunchy to be enjoyable. The description said it came with crispy bacon. The bacon was far from being crisp. The other side dish was green beans & roast carrots - success! That one I would recommend. We had a good time, and I don't have one complaint about the service. But would I go back again? With that huge dinner bill and food that didn't quite match up, probably not.
We love going to Scratch. The Simple Fish never disappoints and the Braised Short-Ribs are fantastic! If they have Apple Cobbler on the menu, it is a MUST! The wine list is pretty good and the service can be spotty, but overall we love this place.

We've dined at Scratch a few times and the food, service and ambiance have been consistently excellent. This past time (last evening) the noise level was much higher than usual due to the number of banquet style parties surrounding us.
Turn down the volume
Everything about this place is perfection, except the noise level. It may be 'chic' to have so much noise, but if I go for a nice meal, nice wine - I want to be able to talk to my dinner partner in a normal tone of voice. This will impact the number of return trips we make to Scratch.
Creative ingredients, good food!
A block from MVPA, has options from innovative salads, fish specials, flavored grits and flatbread pizza. Interesting ingredients all around - foodies would enjoy! Can be a bit loud but we asked for a booth and quieter area, so our party of 6 was able to converse without yelling!
love the food
Great food and good service. A little too noisy . The music seem to get louder and louder.
We got an open table reservation the night before and we picked an early reservation so we could catch a movie! We were running late so I called Scratch and they said don't worry! Lots of drink choices and great server. Food came out quick and was delicious! Was able to pay bill quickly and get to movie on time!
Great Food/Expensive Wine
Overall the food was excellent. I have been here several times. The wine list is excellent, but very pricey. The service was just ok, a bit slow and the waiter not in tune with the table and the conversation.... kept interrupting
Expensive but good for a quiet celebratory dinner
Treated a friend to a birthday dinner. Asked for, and was given, a quiet table. She enjoyed her Mahimahi fish. Our waitress was attentive. Maybe I'm out of touch with the times but I thought the $19 charge for a single glass of wine was outrageous.
Love this place
Second brunch and my husband had a great dinner during the week. High quality food. Typcially noisier but President Day Sunday so lovely and quiet!!! Great bar offerings. Its one of our new faves.
Well prepared food but undersized portions
I ordered scallops that came with some vegetables that were pureed and we're more a garnish vs. an accompaniment. For $31, you were served only 3 scallops a small porton. Waiter had many tables so service was only acceptable.
Overprized and undelivered.
We went there the night before Valentine. had oysters to start, they were excellent, but a basic glass of cheap bubbly cost $ 18. Any wine by the glas essentially cost as much or more that a full bottle and the wine selection is rather poor. Lobster dinner was OK (from frozen lobster), but steak was well done. Dessert menu not up to par. Service was basic with no interaction besides ordering. I can have a better dinner experience in the area for about 60% of what I paid at Scratch.
One of our favorites.
We love Scratch. My only gripe is the service is very friendly, but always slow.
The food is always excellent!!
The only problem I have with Scratch is that it is so noisy and loud. That's because the restaurant fills up with people because it really is a great restaurant. BUT, the noise is really too much, and that will influence whether I return... I might have to be an "early bird" diner so that I miss the crowd and noise at this restaurant.
Expensive Festive Foodie Find
This was definitely a foodie restaurant. The food was delicious, and the ambiance was lively and noisy. Not an intimate setting, but very cool décor with comfortable booths. Service was good, but not outstanding. The prices are fairly high, and I'm not totally sure the food, service, or wine was worth it. Won't be back unless someone else organizes the gathering and picks this place.
We have been here for several times. Last time when we were at Scratch, we celebrated my husband's bday here. The service was very attentive. The food was delicious as it's always. Our waiter surprised us with a small bday cake at the end of our night which was a great gesture!
Worth a Visit...or more
First time here. Table of 3. We all came specifically for the fried chicken. We added in Bloody Mary's and oysters. The drinks were good, not great, and the oysters were tasty. The fried chicken was amazing. Perfect in every way from a great batter, perfectly fried, and served right out of the fryer. Definitely worth coming here for. The waffles on the side, and syrup, were nice too, but on this plate, the chicken was the star.
First visit; great food
Very interesting brunch and lunch menus. The food was delicious. They did not serve ice with the drinks, which seemed odd, so bottled soda and water were warm. Otherwise, nice waiter, reasonable prices, delicious fries. We will return!! WOuld definitely recommend this restaurant.
Pleasant, but overpriced
Compared to a comparable dinner in SF, Scratch is overpriced for what you get. The craft whiskeys were the draw for me, but one glass of a regional whiskey costs half or over half what a whole bottle would. Unless you're going for lunch, on the company's dime, or with a big group, I suggest skipping Scratch. Go to K&L to find a good regional whiskey, and make a romantic dinner at home for your date instead.
great place, kinda pricey
Great brunch. Good service. Nice, energetic atmosphere. A little expensive.
