Amazing property, amazing food!
The food is seriously Gourmet here! Inspired Restaurant week menu each course delicious, unusual ingredients ie: morel mushrooms! We cleaned our plates! 3rd year coming to The Safari Room during Restaurant week-and so satisfied!
Waste of an awesome location
It was restaurant week and while I understand that the restaurant has to watch costs, that doesn't excuse poorly executed dishes. We were there for lunch, wouldn't return: 1) Kale/Quinoa salad (app) - ok, but generally flavorless with big chunks of kale, instead of the expected smaller bites. 2) Asparagus soup (app) - bland other than topping of aged cheddar/pancetta 3) Chicken Waldorf salad (entrée) - driest chicken breast that I've ever been served in a restaurant, barely-there dressing, a serious disappointment. Ate about 25% of it. 4) Porketta Ciabatta - great flavor, great roll, but if you're going to expect me to eat it like a sandwich, cut off the 1/8" layer of fat that surrounds the pork. The flavor of the tomatoes on the sandwich was good, but the texture rendered them extremely chewy and difficult to eat on the sandwich 5) Dessert -decent, but nothing memorable Service - lunch took close to 90 mins even though restaurant was about 50% full. Waiter couldn't be found after he delivered meals - no refills on water or drinks. Showed up when we were done with meal and said "how was everything?" When I told him the salad really wasn't very good, he said "too dry, huh?" and when I told him it was, he said "yeah, I've been hearing that all day". Nice.
One of my Favorite Spots in Newport RI
I have been to the Safari room many times. It is our "go to spot in Newport" The service and competitive pricing on food is always good. One of the best views in Newport RI.
A memorable time
The food was outstanding but a bit expensive. Gorgeous views of the West Passage of the bay. Service was excellent. Bar was well stocked with premium liquors. My only complaint was we had our 11 month old child with us that did not use the buffet or order anything from the appetizer, entre, or dessert menu and I was still charged the $65 buffet fee per person for my 11 month old child. Why?
One of the most disappointing experiences ever.
There was Hardly any lobster in the lobster macaroni & cheese, the bread took 1/2 hour to come out of the kitchen. It was not served we had to request it. The Main course was brought out before the appetizers were finished & before the bread ever arrived and was left sitting on the tray. When it was served, the filet mignon was Luke warm & over cooked. The bartender who doubled as a waiter was watching a game on the television in the bar & we had to yell to him to bring a glass of wine. He didn't acknowledge that he heard us because he couldn't take his eyes off the tv. We were looking forward to the lemon meringue pie but when he brought the dessert menu he informed us that there wasn't any. We were the first & ONLY ones in the dining room. We ordered the cheesecake with ganache which was served ice cold instead of room temperature. It had no taste because it was so cold. Two groups came to look at the venue & the sales pitch took place within ear shot of our table as did conversations among the employees. It seemed as though diners were an inconvenience. I wouldn't recommend this "restaurant" to my worst enemy.
My husband and I came for Valentine's Day. They had a fixed price menu that was outstanding. The service was outstanding! The food was delicious and there was plenty! I wish we could have ordered off the regular menu as my husband doesn't eat seafood but he was very happy nonetheless.

The clam chowder and the salmon were really good. The service as well. I just did not love the decoration, which does not seem to go with the hotel. Overall a very nice experience and I would definitely go back.
The entire experince was excellent. From parking to service to table placement to food.. I have eaten outside in the warmer months but I had not eaten in the inside dining room before. Very nice cozy setting. Thank you.
Great food and view; service substandard.
We dined for lunch as part of restaurant week. It is located in an old mansion so our expectations were high. Upon entering the restaurant, we were taken aback by the kitsch decorations and overly casual servers, who were reminiscent of an after work happy hour establishment. The food was excellent and prepared perfectly. Another drawback was the noise generated from the other guests who seemed to treat the place like some neighborhood watering hole rather than a fine-dining eatery.
Expected Much More
On restaurant week we choose a couple of places we haven't been to. We have found a few gems that we now frequent. After reading the Safari Room's online reviews my wife and I expected an exceptional meal with outstanding service. This is not what we got. We arrived right at our reservation time and we were seated immediately our server arrived at our table about ten minutes later and asked for our drink order. We ordered cocktails and having already looked at the menu online we ordered our fist and second course at that time. We also asked for a wine recommendation, the best the waiter could do was recommend white wine with fish and red with venison. We didn't belabor the issue and made our own wine choice. Our waiter left our table and went to his next table and spent at least fifteen minutes having a nice conversation with what seemed like old friends. He finally left them and put in our order. After what seemed like a long time our drinks finally came followed almost immediately by our first course, the two did not go well together. By the time our wine came my wife had finisher her appetizer and because I waited for the wine what was left of mine was cold. The appetizers were very good. After another long wait our entree's come out. My wife had halibut, the presentation was beautiful but the fish was a little overdone and the artichoke topping had fibrous bit in it. My rack of venison was very well done and dry (I hadn't been asked how I wanted it done). The deserts were nothing special. As we were waiting for the waiter to run our credit card our water glasses were refilled for the first time that evening. If the restaurant was filled and there were only a few wait staff some of the service issues would be understandable, however this wasn't the case. I'm glad we visited during Restaurant week. I don't think we will be going back.
WOW ! menu , superb meal and service!
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our meal at The Safari Room during Restaurant week. The menu was exciting, the ingredients high quality and the dishes were cooked and prepared by very skilled chefs. Every bite was delicious! The staff were all so friendly and professional. Than you!
Food was amazing
This was my first time at the Safari Room, I attended due to the restaurant week menu options. My date and I ordered the calamari for the appetizer, I ordered the Haddock for my entree, my date ordered the venison rack. Everything was fantastic. We were also given a mini sample of the crab cakes which was delicious. Dessert was also fantastic. Only negatives was the hostess was a little snooty and a bit rude on the phone when I made the reservation. We also had to ask for more water. Other then that the waiter was great and so was food. The outside was closed and boarded up due to the time of the year, so we did not get the view we were hoping for either. Overall this was a pleasant experience and I will be going back restaurant week or non restaurant week.
Went for Newport Restaurant Week. I had the Venison Rack. Done to perfection. The food and service were great.
What a chef!
We happened in on a rainy night during Restaurant Week, and felt very fortunate to have only the chef's Prix Fixe menu options. Excellent all! The bartender made a really good old fashioned, and wine list was great. A recommended Pinot Gris was just right with the brulee scallops. Its location outside the busy downtown Newport perhaps keeps it quieter than where the foot traffic is heavy. There is a lovely bay view from the restaurant. The tables are nicely spaced for conversation. Service was just right. Highly recommend.

Calamari was excellent. FOIE GRA was okay. Venison and filet mignon were outrageously good. The apple tartlet was delicious. Your own mini pie with pumpkin gelato
Must be good in summer
We went during restaurant week in November. Overall good experience but at this time of year The restaurant cannot be as good as it must be in summer when you can be outside. Nevertheless we had a good time and look forward to coming back when we can sit outside and enjoy the view.

We were there, with another couple, on a weeknight and there was only one other couple in the dining room other than the four of us. So, the noise level wasn't an issue for us. However, there was a wedding reception going on in one of the other dining rooms that we could overhear. But is wasn't overwhelming at all. The southwestern view is...or could be...outstanding. We were there just at sunset on a fall evening. But the sheet plastic retractable windows for the outside bar were still down. They distorted everything. I'd suggest removing them as soon as the outdoor bar season is complete so that diners can experience they awesome view.
Pineapple room closed for season
The Pineapple room was closed but we did sit outside on the deck so we could sit looking at the beautiful view. The service was excellent but the lunch menu was very limited and pricey

Maybe because it was the off season but we were only one of three tables. The view was spectacular and the food was amazing some of the very best. Everyone should try the safari room while in Newport.
limited menu and very average food
Absolutely a beautiful place to dine. I only wish the food and service was consistently good. The salads were drenched in dressing. The taste of the food was average. The menu selection was small and only one special that we had to remind the waiter to tell us. The coffees were cold. Upside-the Bloody Mary bar is great and the view to die for.
Always a good experience
The safari room has a wonderful setting and spectacular view. The service and attentiveness is excellent and very consistent. The bartenders are also very friendly and provide good service. Our food was also very good. The lobster flat bread was excellent and my husband's steak was excellent too. Our guests really enjoyed the chicken dish and a fish dish. The Safari Room never disappoints and I recommend it for those who haven't visited Newport and would like a wonderful view and excellent food.
Food and service are excellent. View is out of a painting. Only down side is that they walk to people for some of the other events through the dining area. Not a huge deal, but it takes away from what is a gem of a place.
A Newport Gem for Sunday Brunch
Sunday's are great for a lot of things. Family time, soccer games, hiking and unwinding among other things, come to mind. However, Sunday's are an even better day to try new things, create memories and above all, enjoy good food with great company. On this particular Sunday we headed to Newport to try The Safari Room at the Ocean Cliff Hotel, as it came recommended by family and was right on the water. Shore side dining is most definitely the way to go. Seated promptly upon arrival, we chose an umbrella-fitted table outside over looking the water. Our server, Shane, was attentive, friendly, knowledgable and patient. Patience is important when the menu boasts well-thought out starters and brunch entrees. It took some time to select the winning spread but we were happy with what we ordered. A cheese board fitted with fresh table grapes, strawberries, port figs, candied walnuts and decadent cheeses of Brie, Truffle and Merlot, was a great way to start this brunch. This appetizer also came with fresh honeycomb! What an amazingly sweet treat. Oh and I almost forgot the beverages... Meg started with a Bloody Mary which was a great option as it involved heading up to the self-service Bloody Mary bar. You could basically make this drink to any desire imaginable. (Within the limits of what was available to use of course) One could call me old-fashioned as I chose a Dark n' Stormy as my cocktail! And yes, it was delicious! Also ordered was the Lobster Bisque served with fresh lobster, a Belgian waffle dish with poached eggs, maple ricotta and homemade bacon and finally, a Lobster Pot Pie. Italian Prosecco also found its way to the table and really helped us celebrate Sunday. Anything bubbly with brunch goes hand-in-hand! With an attentive staff and an inviting atmosphere, you might just stay for 3 hours like we did. And let's be honest, who doesn't enjoy Sunday brunch? And like Ina Garten says, "fun is most important". This day was absolutely fun! Ryan & Meg
The view here is amazing, but our overall experience was extremely disappointing. I had a filet that was not seasoned and gray. My wife had a haddock special that was cooked poorly with a bland sauce. My drink order was wrong. The butter and oil brought for our bread sat on our table til the bitter end. Our server was doing his best, but was in charge of 6 other tables that were all on the same schedule we were on, making it impossible to keep up. Service was slow, food was sub-par. Go here for a drink, but The Lawn at neighboring Castle Hill Inn is a much better bet for a satisfying dining experience with an equally spectacular view.
Enjoyable but not fantastic
The Safari Room is a great location and the view is fantastic. The service staff did a good job. We thought the food was okay but not anything special. Not a great variety to choose from and not creative. It's not in Newport's top 10 list.
Beautiful and delicious
The menu isn't going to surprise you with anything new, but the food was excellent. My filet with mashed potatoes and roasted veggies (see what I mean?) was done perfectly. The view was gorgeous even on a cloudy night. This will definitely be a new go-to for special occasions (though probably only in warm weather).

The view is gorgeous. We sat outside for lunch and watched the boats sail between the cliffs below. Not our favorite lobster rolls, but will happily return and try something else.
great anniversary dinner
the wait staff was pleasant and knowledgeable, the scenery was beautiful and the food was top shelf, we had a wonderful experience!
Fabulous Sunsets and Very Good Food
The views from the outdoor patio are excellent. The shrimp cocktail was delicious. The fish and chips very tasty with a crispy/salty crust on the cod. The lobster bisque lived up to its reputation. Our server, Zack was attentive without being obtrusive. Pay no attention to those reviews complaining of poor service. Our servers could not have been more friendly and cooperative.
The views are spectacular, service is always good, worth a visit!

Fantastic restaurant with an unbeatable view. Go at sunset if you can.
Fabulous views day or evening.
Reasonably priced menu, basic selection. They did not price gauge considering the ambiance and fabulous view. Perfect place to take abatement of the essanice of newport, a mansion on the water , outdoor seating low proceed menu.

Wonderful environment. Beautiful views, great decor and food at its best. Been there multiple times, and will return independent of season. Great time
If you want a gorgeous view...
If you want a gorgeous view and decent food, then this is the place to go. Gorgeous sunsets, albeit weak cocktails, and okay food, at least the service is good... The thin crust pizza we had was burnt on the edges, but swordfish cooked and seasoned perfectly. The wine was reasonably priced and service was great, so that helped make up for the flaws in some of the food items.
Excellent food and service.
We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner at the Safari Room. Although it rained very hard during our dinner there the staff handled the inconvenience of rainwater pouring into the serving area. They quickly and courteously moved affected diners and minimized the inconvenience. With all this distraction they served an excellent dinner at a reasonable price. We will return here again when we visit in the future.
