Ron of Japan is my favorite restaurant! I've been coming here since I was a little kid and have never been disappointed.

Great food but our entertainment lacked luster and our waiter was very slow. Thank goodness for the interesting couple we shared our table.

Dinner took a little over 2 hours which felt very long for us. They jam 8 people around a smallish table which makes it difficult to find elbow room to eat. Beef fried rice was weird and did not have an Asian fell to it. Soup and salad tasted like cafeteria food. Filet and shrimp were tasty, however be aware that they consider 2 shrimp to be half of a combination meal. We will stick with Tsu Casa from now on.
Fun atmosphere for groups and/or teens
We took our daughters and some of their friends (ages from 13 to 16) to celebrate my 16 yr old's birthday here. The staff were friendly and helpful. The food was plentiful (still eating leftovers three days later), the ambiance was fun and it was easy to have a conversation. The kids liked watching the food being prepared right in front of us. The Mai tai was very tasty and the kids loved the desserts (Key lime and chocolate cake). It is expensive, but a good place for a special occasion.

I was disappointed. There was a lot of food but the dressing in the salad tasted more like Thousand Island than the dressing that usually has a kick to it. The sea bass was very good. However, I was expecting a little "show" from the chef. He basically cooked our meal with no fanfare. The soup tasted like regular chicken noodle soup, not the special flavored soup I have had at other restaurants like this.
Love coming here!!
This place has always gone above beyond. Always leave so full and definitely your moneys worth. We go with a group every time and its wonderful.
Still Wonderful After All These Years!
I was first introduced to RofJ in 1973 by my then-fiance. I fell in love with the shrimp appetizer and now I order the shrimp dinner every time I visit RofJ. I still love it, and I love just about everything there, especially the Sake. I think I'm in love with Ron!

NOT YOUR HIBACHI KIND OF SHOW
I CHOSE RON OF JAPAN TO TREAT MY PARENT'S FRIEND WHO WERE VISITING FROM OUR HOMELAND. I'VE BEEN TO A LOT OF HIBACHI DINNER BUT THIS IS MY FIRST TIME AT THIS PLACE. I DIDN'T GET THE ENTERTAINMENT THAT I WAS EXPECTING FROM THE CHEF. I COULD HAVE CHOSEN ANOTHER PLACE FOR A CHEAPER PRICE, WITH THE SAME QUALITY OF FOOD BUT WITH GOOD ENTERTAINMENT. THERE WAS NO SHOW AT ALL. THE CHEF DOESN'T HAVE THE JOYFUL PERSONALITY AND GAVE ME A FEELING THAT HE WANTED TO COOK THE FOOD AS FAST AS HE CAN SO HE WOULD BE DONE. I COULD HAVE PAID THE SAME AMOUNT OF MONEY TO A FINE DINING RESTAURANT.
Great food at one of our favorites
Always enjoy the food at this spot. It was especially good this last time we were there. Not very happy with the service this time but usually it is pretty good. The updating in the restaurant was a nice improvement. Of course, this is a very pricey dinner but we always enjoy it.
Ron of Japan
Love the food. It is fun to watch the chef cook your meal. It is also enjoyable most times, to eat with strangers.

We arrived for our reservation and we were seated promptly...that is about the highlight to me. I have been going to ROJ for years and the service has never been this poor. It felt like our table was an inconvenience to the server. We were in a back corner and forgotten about even though we were in the front room. Our cook was ok...he seemed to be having an off day as I have had him before. Food was falling before he got to the plates and egg sauce was all over. The cooktop wasn't cleaned well when he was done. I have never walked away feeling like we wasted money...until now. I am not in a hurry to return.

egg sauce rocks!
I have been a customer for over 20 years, I love the food. The wait staff has gotten better in the Northbrook location. Our cook Tony, always does an magnificent job, very friendly and always greets us with a smile. I just wish they would stop trying to squeeze 9 people into one table. it was very uncomfortable to eat, there was not enough room to really enjoy our meal this particular evening. constantly bumping into the next person, not enough room for our drinks

I have dined here several times for birthday events and this was the worst experience from the greeting to the service. For a $300 meal- will never go back.
I won't be back—the cost wasn't worth it.
Overcooked steak, disappointing experience. Not much more to say.

Not bad but not great
The chef was lacking personality and the overcooked vegetables were lacking flavor and texture. I couldn't eat any of my veggies because they were unbelievably mushy and desperately unappealing.

The chef tonight (didn't catch his name) was perfect. One of the best meals to date at RoJ. The waiter was very attentive too. One of our favorite restaurants. Oh... It also was nice that we had the table to ourselves.

It was my first time for my birthday celebration and they took us on time and they seat us as requested on the notes. We had great service and great food ! Everything was fresh and great tasting . The decor is as if u were really in Japan! We will be returning!
Very disappointed , waited 1 1/2 hours to get food
Very disappointed as we have been going for years. Late to seat our reservation, didn't get a bite to eat for 1 1/2 hours. Manager was rude and didn't care. Extremely disappointed with this last experience.
Food here is better than other Japanese steak houses we've been to. Great egg sauce, salad dressing and soup. Fish, steak and vegetables always done to perfection.
Usually great but this time not so much.
I have been to Ron of Japan roughly 8 times in the recent past and for the most part the food has been excellent. This most recent time there were a few minor issues. 1. The food was not cooked long enough and the preparer didn't do the usual "fireball" with the food to get it hot enough. In addition both my wife's steak and my fillet-mignon had more than a usual amount of fat. Some fat is expected from a regular steak, but not the fillet. Hopefully this is a one time issue and not a sign of lesser quality trying to invade a great restaurant.
Not so great, just good
I am a monthly or every other month diner at Ron of Japan both in Chicago and Northbrook. This past trip was my first and only disappointing dinner experience. We were not so happy with the quality of the meat. Everything else was great. The music they played seemed odd. It sounded like movie themes.
Great chef and awesome service!
Great chef and awesome service!
Food was excellent but very expensive for family of 10!
Ron of Japan
Have not been here for a long time. Will not be coming back. Both my wife and myself were feeling sickly the next day. Terrible chef had food all over the cook table and I don't think it was cooked right. I don't know if the building has heat but it sure was not working inu the bar area. You want good food in a great atmosphere go down the street to Su Casa or go to Benihanas.
it was really disappointing, long wait, bad food.
save your money go somewhere else. food was meh, the wait was horrible, over priced.

The egg sauce was as amazing as everyone says.
I come every year for my birthday, then in between for special dining with the hubby & occasionally with the kids & grand-kids. We love the food & have yet to find any other place that can match it.
We have been going to Ron Of Japan for over 32 years .I have to say I was very disappointed. .It was very tight and what is with the plates..No room to eat and enjoy .had the soup and salad at the same time no room for both, had to give up eating my soup just to get more room...I will give the Chicago one another chance if it is the same No more ron of japan...It is soooooo sad..My first date with my husband was there 33 years ago..He was going before that when it opened..SO SAD TIMES.CHANGE NOT FOR THE GOOD.
Things have changed
I miss the prior wait staff. Our waiter was not attentive at all to drink refills. The chef was awesome and very attentive. He got us extra veggies when he noticed we weren't eating the pile of onions that had been dished out. The other problem was the ventilation. This was the worst we had ever experienced.
Great visit as always!
Our food was outstanding and our service was excellent. We will be returning soon!
