Revolution - Durham Ratings and Reviews
A Special Dinner in Downtown Durham
We had a lovely Sunday night dinner just a block or so from City Hall at Revolution. The neighborhood was very quiet, but the restaurant had a nice vibe to it. Sleek and modern, a good menu which had a range of dishes in a range of prices. Good cocktails, and most wines available by the bottle or glass, my wife had a delicious "James Bond Martini" (Vesper) and I had a glass of wine. I had a lovely platter of oysters and a great Pappardelle with a veal and beef sauce, while my wife had an appetizer-level confit of duck leg which served well as a main course. One of the finest apple tartes I have ever had made for the dessert. Well worth returning to.
dinner before DPAC
We made reservations at Revolution because it was so close to DPAC. It was only the second time we have dined there, and the first time for dinner. Both of us had pasta. The pasta was excellent, freshly made. The desserts were outstanding. Arugula salad was fine. Overall, this is an excellent place for dinner before a show (or maybe after) because the food is great; it is so convenient; and the price is very affordable for upscale dining. The only thing was the service. The server was knowledgeable and attentive, but the kitchen was very slow. We had 6 pm reservations for an 8:30 show. If we had had 6:30 reservations, we would have been at the door just when the show started.
Tasting Menu 5-course
This was our first time at Revolution. The two of us did the 5-course tasting menu. It was just OK. The portions were HUGE, not the 4 courses of tapas + dessert the waiter described. While this probably makes it a better deal economically for some people, it was just a ridiculous amount for fine dining. The seafood paella wasn't paella, but it was delicious and the seafood was probably the most perfectly cooked I've ever had in 10+ years in North Carolina. The pork belly was also very beautiful. So 2 excellent courses out of 5. The other 3 were executed fine, just uninspiring, particularly the beef course which came with some kind of A-1 kind of sauce. Also, 2 of 5 had the same garnishes, which seems a little lazy. Our server was mostly ok, but they did completely forget about my cocktail, which I had to remind them about after the bread and first courses had arrived. While I wasn't sure the tasting menu was worth it, it seems like they have enough gems if you stick to their regular menu.

Service was very slow. We waited 15 minutes for our drinks and almost an hour for 3 appetizes, one of which isn't even cooked. The others were burnt. We left barely eating a bite and paid $80.

fantastic food and service, the perfect start to a magic evening.
We were really looking forward to dining here having eaten there several times in t/ past. The restaurant was packed when we arrived for our reservation but they seated us immediately which was nice. Unfortunately that's pretty much where t/ service stopped. It took a good 10 minutes for anyone to come and take our drink order but we understood because there was a crowd of people trying to eat, pay & leave in time for a show so it was easy to see how we might not be a priority. Once someone did come & take our drink order it was at least another 15 minutes before we got them....still trying to be easy going here but starting to wonder why they did not have enough help to accommodate the number of diners (particularly when they probably had reservations....) Eventually the DPAC crowd clears out & things quiet down so we think OK now it will improve but no such luck. Quite some time later our server comes around to take our order...we're out of water and drinks too & we place an order for apps (starving having been there for 45 minutes now) and salads and entrees but ask our server to space them so they don't come on top of each other. Literally another 15 minutes goes by...no drinks no food and they are not busy (there is nobody in the bar area at all). Food comes & it's only so so but who cares at this point - then of course before we could even eat that out comes the entrees which were also disapointing. All lacked seasoning, one was overdone and the gnocchi was mush. The dining "experience" took roughly 3 hours! Our server was unapologetic & did not have a very good attitude. I eat out a lot & don't mind paying higher prices especially when it includes great food, service and ambiance. I even understand that every restaurant can have a bad night & (for me) good service can help offset subpar food but to have very poor service and mediocre food with no apologies or any attempts to improve t/ experience - I doubt we will be back.
We went to Revolution for Easter Buffet Brunch. The service was excellent. The buffet was was plentiful. Noise level was moderate. Food was delicious. We were seated right on time.

We took an out-of-town guest to Revolution as it typically has very good food and service. This particular night the food was excellent. The only complaint was the service was a bit screwed up, the drinks were wrong, and slower than usual, the appetizers came out late. But again, everyone's dinner was quite good.
Another great evening of dining at Revolution. We tried the "Feed Me" chef's choice and were not disappointed. Continues to deliver on quality and service each and every time.
Less than impressed.
Not being our first time to Revolution, this visit we were "less than impressed" and what we promised our guests failed to occur. Initial impression was poor with a 92 score from the health department and then we were seated at the front window on the noisy bar side rather than the dining room. The menu was different than the menu on the web site. They were out of Tito's Vodka on a Saturday night at 6PM. There was a pit in the olive served with vodka. Unable to accommodate vegetarian diet other than with high calorie pasta. The mussels appetizer was undercooked and served without a bowl and seafood fork. Overall slow service; when dinner finally arrived, 3 of 4 meals came and while we waited for the fourth, dinner turned cold. Second glass of white wine was the incorrect wine which we corrected. IF we referred anyone to Revolution in the future, we would warn them based on this experience.
High end option in Downtown Durham!
Well prepared menu, helpful and knowledgeable staff. They work around your allergies by offering to do things outside of the menu. Had a last minute request to add my grandson to the reservation and they work with me. They make him feel special and welcome. The atmosphere was great, very beautiful and upscale tables. Service was good as well. Very prompt with food and getting orders, always refilling glasses, and seem happy to be there. Hope it stay open for long time, it is very close to the DPAC, so it will be a good option if you want to have dinner before the show. I may do that next time.
We would certainly go back.
We had the pork/shrimp roll appetizer, salmon and stuffed porkchop. All were well prepared and delicious. The staff was very professional and courteous. We would certainly return prior to another DPAC show.
Revolution was excellent for a special occasion
Revolution was excellent for a special occasion for my family. Great location to go to DPAC after dinner. Service was outstanding. Great variety on menu to please all six of us. Highly recommend.
Amazing Dinner in Durham!
I had a GREAT dinner. I started with the Arugula, fig, and Honey salad. It was fantastic. Then I had the amazing, wonderful, awesome Eggplant Lasagna. Best Lasagna I've ever had and it had no Pasta! It was truly wonderful! Great service, great meal.
Dinner before show
Nice restaurant to have dinner before a show at the DPAC. It is very convenient and within walking distance. The gnocchi with lobster sauce and the eggplant stack dinners were delicious but the special pork chop was just so so. The timing for serving us was a little off. Our appetizers came out quickly but our dinners were slow. We did not care for our waiter. I felt that it was a little pricey for the food and service that we received!
Server was warm and friendly, food was late burnt and tasteless. Chef did not pay attention to detail, should not have served that veal chop.
It would be nice to add a salad to your meals.
A green salad should be included in the meal at the price given. I had punkin butter nut squash. To complete the meal, it would be nice to have something green. The service was great and the bread and butter were good.

I took my girlfriend for an anniversary date. When I arrived I told the restaurant owner and he later surprised us with a complimentary glass of champagne. The ambiance was perfect for the occasion and the food quality was excellent
We had a delightful evening at Revolution. The service was spectacular. Our glasses were never even close to empty. Ivan, our waiter, was very knowledgable and helpful in his recommendations. We both had the arugula salad. My husband had the red snapper while I had the salmon. All was delicious! I have already recommended this restaurant to my friends and will definitely will be going back.
Although I don't visit Revolution as much as I would like, I always have an excellent experience. We will be back again.
Good as usual
Good food attentive staff but they might consider just explaining what is available rather than telling us how busy they've been and what isn't available. Instead of saying we are all out of this, say we are serving that tonight. Would feel better.
I would highly recommend this restaurant.
This is an excellent restaurant located near DPAC where you can enjoy a nice dinner before a show or celebrate any occasion. The food was excellent and the bartender knows how to make a great Old Fashion. The wine selection, though limited, was very good. It was quite noisy and our table for 2 was small.
Not a fan
I made this reservation months in advance to see the opening night of the Lion King at the DPAC. I put special instructions in the reservation to the restaurant that we were traveling in from Raleigh to see the show and needed early reservations so we would leave in time to walk to the DPAC. Their website and some reviewers said they have valet parking, which they didn't have available that night probably because it was a week night. Since we were there so early, there were only 2 other couples there, but it took forever for someone to take our drink/food order. They clearly didn't know that we were trying to make it to the show despite the special notes to the reservation. It took well over 35 minutes to get our food! There were only a hand-full of patrons but clearly understaffed that night. We quickly scarfed our food in 8 minutes and asked for the check when the food came. There was zero customer service, no one asked us if it was our first time coming, we had to ask for a wine/cocktail list, they didn't tell us if there were any specials for the night. Overall, very unimpressed and will not come back. Disappointing because the DPAC referred them to me as an excellent choice to go before shows and that they were fabulous about being mindful of show-goers.

Had a great time, my brother and I enjoyed the "feed me" selection, which is basically a chefs choice meal. Enjoyed it, my steak (NY strip) was slightly overcooked, but totally edible. I would recommend and will probably return again!
First time eating here. My wife and I enjoyed the food and the service was outstanding. Will definitely come back.
Went there for V-day with my boyfriend. While we waited for our reservation time we got a drink at the bar. Both drinks were very good! However, service for dinner seemed rushed. We got the 3 course special with wine pairing. The food was tasty. I got the duck Confit which was really good. My boyfriend got the wine paring (not me) and the waiter gave him a wine to go with the duck but he didn't order that for his meal. He ordered the risotto which he didnt finish becuase it was gross. The wine pairing was basically the waiter showing my boyfriend the bottle and then pouring it. He didn't give much of an explanation of why the wine paired nicely with the meal. The resturant didn't seem to be very large, but the wait staff seemed very overwhelmed and rushed. Overall the drinks were the highlights. The food was okay. The experience was blah.

Had a reservation for Valentine's Day and we were seated in the musty basement. There was no ambience and only one other couple. The only music was coming from upstairs. My date and I decided that we move upstairs to the bar since there were no other tables available. What a great way to spend Valentine's Day eating dinner at the bar with cold draft every time that the door was opened. The food was very good and the bartender provided very good service. Did i say bartender serving valentines dinner. Btw. The other couple left 10 minutes after we moved. I've visited revolution 5 times, I won't visit again...won't take a chance with a reservation and being seated in the basement
Fantastic food and service
Highly recommend the "feed me" chef's choice - an improvised 3 course meal chosen by the chef and was absolutely delicious. We will be coming back!
A Most Excellent Dinner
Me and my girlfriend had the opportunity to partake in the 5-course tasting menu at Revolution. Simply put the food was superb. Our server, Garret I believe was his name, was attentive, knowledgeable, and even paid attention to a passing comment I made about creme brulee being my favorite dessert and made sure I received it for my dessert course. His wine and liquor recommendation was spot on.

Food not as good as last time. Appetizers very good. Main dishes more pedantic; particularly the pastas which was over cooked. Still a nice and lovely restaurant.
Great fun find!
Awesome food and wine and great picks by the staff. Will seriously consider the Chef's choice as everything was exceptional.
Dinner at Revolution
Great experience for a first time visit. Staff was friendly and attentive. Entrees and desserts were unique offerings and quite tasty.
We decided to venture out of Raleigh and give Durham a try for dinner. We all had heard good things about Revolution but none of the 4 of us had been, so off we went. Upon arriving the hostess asked if we wanted downstairs or up and we asked for her opinion since we had not been there before. She emphatically said " you will get better service downstairs", which we thought was an odd response but accepted her suggestion. Well if downstairs is the better service then I suggest not going at all! A 7:15 reservation finished up at 10:00 and no one had coffee or dessert. The downstairs room, which had 3 tables of patrons when we arrived, had the attention of ONE waiter. The room quickly filled to 5 tables of dinners and still one waiter. Granted he had help with food delivery and water glasses being refilled but that was all. He not only was taking care of the orders and the wine, and the bread but also the tab. When one table of about 6 or 8 people decided to pay and they decided to all pay individually, thats when things went south. We tried to get his attention at one point since we had ordered two glasses of wine and bread that never showed up and he gave US the reprimand look of, I'm busy here, can't you see! We did finally get the wine and bread we had asked for but not before my mussels in a delicious broth was cold and then I didn't need the bread any longer. The entry's finally came, at least 3 of the 4 did, the last one showed up about 5 minutes later. The food was just okay, certainly not special enough to drive 30 minutes to Durham from Raleigh on a Saturday night. Maybe next time, if there is one, we will give the upstairs a try, if we have 3 hours to kill.
We were not impressed with the "Feed Me" 3 course.
We were hoping for something adventurous and novel from the 3 course but got steak and potatoes instead. The steak was not particularly bad, but wasn't memorable either - we could have gotten steak at a number of different locations. We wanted something more from this restaurant besides a pricey bill for steak and potatoes. Don't get the "Feed me" 3 course if you want interesting fare, stick to the individual items on the menu.
Poorly served below average food
We chose Revolution for an early dinner because of its proximity to the venue we were attending that night and let our waiter know our situation up front. When our food finally arrived it came with the waiter's apology that he had mistakenly put in the wrong order. Instead of the rare tuna we'd ordered, we got "the special," a crumb and nut-crusted, tasteless and tough fish. By then it was too late to wait for what we had actually ordered. We took a few bites and asked for the check. The waiter then proceeded to hold onto our credit card for ten minutes -- we had to chase him down to get our card back. At no point was any attempt made to compensate us with a free drink or dessert for the poor service.
Having both dined at this restaurant and participated in one of their culinary classes, the food is delicious and the atmosphere very friendly. Looking forward to going back again soon!
Overall, a pretty good dining experience ...
Overall, a pretty good dining experience with good food and great service. Octopus salad was a little too salty for my taste and you're rolling the dice when doing a wine pairing. The dessert wine pairing was not to my liking, but those a pretty small potatoes and otherwise it was great. Would definitely go back.
But for the waiter……
I would have given Revolution five stars, if it hadn't been for our wauter. The food is, bar none, some of the best in Durham. The ambience was wonderful, and it would've been a five star evening. But our waiter took very little notice of us. He had a few other tables around us, and seemed to give them plenty of attention, but just tended to skip us. The food almost made up for it!

My food was not warm and they warmed for me.
Had tickets to DPAC, made reservation at Revulution. Place was packed but service didn't suffer! Ivan (waiter) paired wines with our dinner. Portions were sufficient, food was excellent. Can't wait to go back!
