About Pietro's Coal Oven Pizza - South Street
Pizza is a family affair for me. My Uncle Angelo arrived in America in the 1930s with a passion for pizza. He worked hard and eventually bought his own pizzeria in Brooklyn. It was there that Uncle Angelo invented a recipe for coal oven pizza. That recipe has been perfected over 60 years and passed down through the generations.
My brothers and cousins in New York know the recipe. Diners at Patsy's, Nick's and Angelo's have enjoyed their pizzas, pastas and salads for years. Here in Philadelphia and New Jersey, you can feast on my Uncle Angelo's secret recipe dishes at our three Pietro's locations: 1714 Walnut Street, 121 South Street in Philadelphia and 140 W. Route 70 in New Jersey.
I hope that you enjoy our classic style pizzas and pasta specialties "alla familia" for many years to come. Buon appetito

Pietro's Coal Oven Pizza - South Street Ratings and Reviews
Salads and Pizza
THE best Chicken Ceaser Salad I have ever had. It's a little pricey at about $16 but so worth it! The cheese, the dressing, the grilled chicken was perfect and HUGE! Pizza we shared was great too! crisp and fresh ingredients. Loved my meal!
Good for kids
The staff here did a good job accommodating my multi-generational family. We dined on a Tuesday evening so it was probably quieter then normal.
That pizza was excellent. Really liked the crust. Thin crunchy. Just the way we like it. The shared Caesar salad was really good too. We were a group of 7. Service was good. Price reasonable.
From the time we were seated until the time we left everything was exceptional.
Must be under new management...
I live in the neighborhood and I've been here a few of times and the food is always great. Haven't been there in a while and this time it was pretty gross. The food was greasy and the bolognese was gross, it looked like my dog's wet dogfood. The meat was not distinguishable, and it was basically a pile of mush. The drinks were not good either. I don't think I'll be back to this restaurant after that experience. They must be under new management or something, because every other time the food was as delicious as it was beautiful. Bummer.

Every time I go I never seem to be disappointed ! Bread is to die for ! The arugula salad is delicious ! You can't go wrong with anything you pick
enjoyed the food. they give good proportions. I went on a Friday and I was eating the food until Sunday. the waitress was nice, and the setting was romantic.
We truly enjoyed Pietro's! The other 3 friends with me had never been to Pietro's and were very impressed with the friendliness, the service and especially the food. They all said they will definitely go back. I personally made another reservation for 7 the next day to go back to Pietro's as everything is always fantastic!
Good food, terrible service
I know that large groups can be annoying for servers, but there was no excuse for the terrible service that we received. We were seated for over 20 minutes before a server even brought us water. Then another 20 minutes before they took our drinks order. Some people in our group waited 45+ minutes for drinks. There were several times that we needed things (water, drinks, etc) and were being totally ignored by the wait staff. They were congregated in a group about 20 feet away but refused to look at us! That being said, the food was delicious! Won't be going back, though.

It was NYE and also my birthday! It was our first time here and we will definitely return. I will say though that we felt a little rushed. The server immediately told us when we sat down we had to order right away because the food might take longer because it was a busy night. Not a problem, we did. I'm willing to bet service might be a little better on a non holiday night. Otherwise, no complaints. It was my birthday and I enjoyed the night!

Long time friends getting together. One couple had a baby there, another couple pregnant. And the other along for the ride. Ambiance was perfect for a child, and the food was excellent. We love going to Pietros for our date nights too. Food prices are very reasonable, and the service is up to snuff. Thanks Pietros!

Great tasting food, generous portions. Everything was fresh. Service was good despite the crowd. Had to wait a little to get our table (made reservations) but okay since we were late anyhow. Part of our group was an hour late--no problem! A little on the loud side--very crowded but plenty of large tables for larger groups. Nice experience!

Dinner for 6
We had dinner for 6 people. we had the Arugula salad, Fried Calamari and the Gemeli Chicken and Margarita pizza. all was great
Wonderful Experience for our Group!
We had made arrangements via Open table the week before we traveled with our school group to see the Pope in Philadelphia. We had to change our reservation once, due to a timing issue, with no problem. Once we were ready to get on our way, we called the restaurant and ordered our dinner. When we arrived, about 30 minutes later, they had a lovely table set for 35 with all of the food ready and waiting. The service was excellent and the food was amazing. A great way to end our long day. Thank you!
Food was yummy and would return.
Food was yummy and would return.
A few friends and I went here before an event in Philly. Food was EXCELLENT, service was quick as we were on a time schedule. I would definitely go back.
Not the same caliber
We've eaten at the Pietros on Walnut near Rittenhouse many times over the years. We were in the area, celebrating our daughters birthday with her friends, and expected this to be the same caliber as the Pietros Rittenhouse location. Sadly, only the name is the same. The pizzas were mediocre at best. We had a group and left half the pizza uneaten; many people only having one slice each. The mixed drinks both my wife and I had were both served surprisingly warm. The calamari, brugetta and fried mozzarella appetizers with dipping sauce were barely average. The general finishes at our table appeared geared more towards late-night pub crawling. Both my wife an I later apologized to our group for the sub-par dinner. Too many other outstanding eating options in Philly to come back here again.
Went to Pietros with family from out of town.
Went to Pietros with family from out of town. Food was great and service was friendly.
The food was absolutely delicious. Me and my date went early in the afternoon so it was quiet, we sat outside and enjoyed our meal with a nice breeze and sunny weather. I highly recommend the pasta, the bread was fresh and to die for too. I would certainly return there.

Has been a favorite of my family for a long time but there were some changes to old menu items and the changes were not good...even a simple item like the mozzarella sticks (a fave of the kids) were different and not good (tasted frozen and was all bread crumb) Pizza still good but was disappointed for the first time...
Very nice experience!!
Delicious food & they accommodated our requests for dishes that were not on the menu. I had penne pasta with shrimp in a blush sauce; very simple but delicious. My husband asked for spaghetti with sausage instead of meatballs and he said it was really good. Our server was super nice and we got our orders pretty quick - maybe within 15 minutes. It was a little hot in the restaurant but besides that, the ambiance was very nice. Would recommend going here for a casual and fun night out.
Excellent food & service
A very nice neighborhood restaurant. Went with a family of four - everyone loved the food. New England clam chowder was a special that night and it was exceptional - lots of tender clams in an Italian influenced base. Nice range of entrees & of course pizza (all excellent!). One guest had the salmon entree - beautifully prepared & presented. Service was very attentive without being in your face - a nice surprise. More than adequate beer & wine selection too. We will definitely be going back.
Went her for brunch and pizza was awesome!
Haven't had dinner here yet. Sat outside for brunch and pizza was bangin' as expected. Service was good too. Price was about average and affordable as expected for city restaurants.
Birthday party and family celebration
I set this up on open table and booked a reservation for 10 people. I noted under special notes that this was for a 20th bday. Assuming that they would see the notes and have something sent out for dessert. It was disappointing when they cleared the table and didn't have plans on sending anything out. I had to sneak up to the hostess and tell her again, which to her reply was "well you'll have to pay for it". Really! Make no mistake, I'm not upset about the cost of the $6 piece of cheese cake, but the way it was handled. If you're planning a surprise birthday dinner, plan ahead and make sure you remind them why you're there and what you expect at the end. Amateur servers. Even for a family place like Pietro's.
Great pizza, and salads
We love the pizza and salads at Pietro's. We come from DC area to visit our son who attends college in Philadelphia and this has always been our go to restaurant. in Philly. We like both locations.
our favorite go to restaurant
We loved this restaurant when they had a store in NJ. We now travel into Philadelphia when we need our fix. Usually get the same thing the Mediterranean salad and the Barase Pizza. The salad can feed four however it is so good you may finish it with two. This is the best thinner crust pizza around and would recommend it to everyone. . We have had other items on the menu and they have also been delicious.
Great italian restaurant!!!!!
I recommend Pietros to all my friends and familly every chance I get. The staff are very friendly and the food is amazing!! Price is just right for the quality!
Great dining experience
The service was great and the food had us making plans to return. What a fabulous place to eat!
Amazing pizza and salads! Service was outstanding!
New Years Eve
My husband and I arrived for our reservation at 8:15, the two young hostesses were running around the restaurant looking for open tables, this included running up stairs. We were asked to go upstairs, it was extremely noisy. There was a party of 12 people seated behind our table, I noticed they had no water, no drinks, and no bread on the table. After 15 mins. no one approached our table, one waitress was running back and forth with pizza boxes. That waitress approached the large group and finally took their order. We had looked around and saw no one else had food or drink on their tables, at this point we made the decision to leave. We have been to Pietro's on two other occasions the first time was fine, second time food was salty, we wanted to give them another try.....we will not be back to this establishment.
It seems like the restaurant was short of Staff
We waited over 20 minutes to place our order. We ordered the food and we never got the appetizer. I was disappointed with service!
Good as always
I have been going to Pietro's for 10+ years and the food is always consistently good. It's family style so I like to go with a large group. Gives me a chance to try a variety of stuff. The Fettuccine Carbonara is on of my favorites and you can never go wrong with their pizza.
We came for dinner with our 3 young children after early fireworks show on nye. We were seated right away upstairs in small rm with a bar. Prefer downstairs but it was fine. Ordered kids pizza and immediately brought out. Took longer for waitress to come back to take our order and very long for our food to come out. At this point restaurant was full. Only 2 waitress for upstairs. They seemed overwhelmed. We were forgotten about after our food was brought. Had to get up twice to ask for drink and the check. Pizza was great. Our entrees were not and menu more expensive than I remembered. Overall would stick with the pizza and bring drinks for your kids. $3.50 for a small glass of juice is ridiculous.
