Parallel 38 Ratings and Reviews
Nice Place for a Special Occasion
Food was excellent and service was very good. Parallel 38 is a bit pricey but worth it for special occasions.

Absolutely delicious! Server was very knowledgeable about menu and wine list. We will definitely be going back soon.
Parallel 38, Great all around
Parallel 38 definitely competes with the best tapas spot (mas tapas) with its wide selection of Italian, mediterranean and middle eastern inspired small plates. Set in the Stonefield development, which is kind of a bummer because I feel it belongs in a cool neighborhood like Belmont, Parallel 38 definitely impressed. The best things I had were the MTO flatbread, the Lime Gimlet, and the chorizo pasta dish. Service was fine. Really like the decor and vibe. Since its tapas and there are a couple dishes per person, it can get a little pricy as each plate is around $10. Looking forward to a return trip soon.
Okay, but the service and HVAC need work
The food is good though Mas is WAY better for tapas. When we sat down, my wife actually thought there was a helicopter landing on the building. It turns out it is the HVAC system buffeting that they "can't do anything about" which, of course, means, "we don't want to spend the money to fix it". They agreed to move us and the sound improved but it could still be heard. My cocktail was excellent and the highlight of the meal, for 14$ it better be. The tapas were okay, but just good enough to leave you wondering what they could be. Our server was good until she disappeared at the end of the meal not even offering us dessert. We heventually had to flag down another server to get our check.
Small portions at an expensive price
The waitress was nice, service was good. A la carte menu. Do not go there hungry. Have to order multiple items for a substantial meal. Had to ask for more pita bread just to quench appetitie and use for portions. More for an expensive date if you want ambiance, not a family. Very difficult to hear the waitress because of the echoing environment and music.
Good food but noisy...
We like this place and have been there two times. The service and food is good but it's not a place to go for intimate quiet dining. The place is quite noisy because of the layout and lack of carpet or walls to absorb sound.

Consistent quality across the board with a few stand out dishes such as the grilled asparagus to wow the palate.
Good food- small portions and overpriced
We ordered a cheese plate and barely had enough for each of us to taste each one but that is it. Also they brought out and poured the wrong wine. The food was very tasty but not worth the high prices. Go here if you have a company expense account and don't care how much you pay.
We made reservations for a post-movie dinner. We were seated immediately, and offered to check our bulky coats. We were pleased to find out that on Wednesday, they have buy one get one specials. We were served quickly and efficiently, although they could have spread out the timing of the small plates a bit better. The restaurant has high ceilings and little to absorb noise, so it did get a bit loud as the evening wore on. We prefer to go here in Spring and Summer when we can sit outside.
Fun evening out
I like Parallel, but I don't love it. Our service was excellent (and our server in particular was incredibly kind and thoughtful), so zero complaints there—I'm just not a huge fan of the food. I feel like it's high quality, but portions seem to be all over the map and the larger items that are meant to fill you up a bit, like the pizzas, don't wow me. More pros: Parallel is incredibly accommodating for larger parties and their drink selection is impeccable. Draft wine! Awesome beer selection (though very few on tap)! Excellent cocktails! I think this may be a personal preference rather than any issue of the restaurant's. We had a lovely evening and appreciated every aspect of the service.
Lunch on a rainy day
Can only comment on lunch. Food was good , not as creative as I expected but could have been our selections. Our waitress was very sweet and helpful. It was a rainy Saturday and the restaurant was almost empty. Pleasant enough to sit and chat over lunch. Just don't think I can give a real assessment. Would like to try for dinner.
Interesting mediterranean-oriented restaurant with great choices like veggies, skewers, pasta, etc. We had a variety of dishes and everyone was tasty and nicely prepared. The service was excellent. I found it a bit pricey for small plates as we only had two drinks and the bill was around $50 pp. However we would return

Excellent place-food, wine, the service! We always like coming here!
Loved sampling the tapas with my husband for Valentine's Day. The chorizo and shrimp with fennel was the best thing I have eaten in a long time.
Great service, knowledgeable staff, very good food. The server was pleasant and helpful, attentive, but not too much. Fun atmosphere. Will go again.
Food was good, not fantastic.
It has a cool atmosphere and I love the decor. Food was good, not fantastic but the servers were nice. Whiskey sour was delicious and the gnocchi was awesome. I would probably not bring my kids here and I'm not sure how often we will actually be back just because of the price point.
Good food, great service
Had a great time at Parallel 38. Good food, but a touch overpriced. Excellent service.
Very Good Mediterranean Food
We had a great meal at Parallel 38 while vacationing in the area. Our waitress recommended 2-3 plates per person. Since we were pretty hungry, we opted for 3 each, and ended up taking home a lot of food. The pita and dips were excellent, as were the brussel sprouts, and the citrus potatoes. The flatbread was not at all what we expected, but still pretty tasty. The only miss of the night was the gnocchi. Parallel 38 also has a really nice wine list. Overall it was a really tasty meal, and not too expensive. Would definitely recommend it.
When this restaurant first opened, we felt like we ordered a bunch of food but still left hungry. Not anymore; we have now been back twice in the last two weeks and had great experiences both times! The menu has been expanded and includes diverse dishes to satisfy any palate, even picky eaters like our daughter. We had hummus, labneh, meatballs, brussels sprouts, meatball flatbread, pork belly (the best!), and chocolate panna cotta. I would order them all again. Our son is now a big fan of pork belly; it was his first time to try it. They also were kind enough to bring extra pita bread and olive oil for our daughter, who only otherwise ate the hummus, brussels, and meatball flatbread. I can't wait to go back!
Best I have been to in Charlottesville in YEARS YEARS I TELL YOU Our waitress was amazing FOOD All great time!! Thank you
Always Something New
My wife and I had a pre Christmas dinner at P38 with our visiting daughter from Santa Monica and our son from Charlotte. Both thought the food was amazing especially the risotto, the spicy tuna and the skirt steak. Both commented that the portion sizes were larger than what they were used to at their local tapas restaurants and the prices were much more reasonable than what they normally encounter. I agree with them and can't understand when a reviewer complains about P38's portions or prices. One of the great aspects of P38 is the constantly changing menu. It's fun to try new things. A highlight of the evening for me was when I asked our server Olivia (who did a great job of taking care of us) for a good port in lieu of dessert. Justin Ross, the Owner/Manager, showed up with a fortified wine he suggested I try. Forget the ports or sauternes this wine was truly spectacular. I believe it is called a Mistelle from the Cognac Region. It is a blend of grape must and Grand Champagne Cognac and aged thirty years. This wine defines complexity and is really worth trying. My only problem is now I need to find a supplier for home consumption.
I do not know about all the listed categories but we always enjoy the food, service and ambiance at Parallel 38. The format is small plates and we have always found them to be interesting and delicious. The decor is chic and while the atmosphere is lively, you can converse comfortably.
My husband and I had a wonderful time at Parallel 38. The food, service, and overall experience were great. I would have given it a 5 star if not for the fact that it was freezing in the restaurant. I'm used to a restaurant being a little chilly, but this was frigid. Many patrons were eating with their coats on. This should have been a signal to the manager that the temperature was too cold. Being uncomfortable while trying to enjoy a lovely meal makes the whole experience not what it should be. I would recommend this restaurant for anyone who loves great food.
Interesting Variety of Delicious Food
Tapas restaurant, the offerings are interesting and delicious. Plan on spending about $125 for two if you plan to drink and dine well.
Great place for a nice dinner
I live in Charlottesville area. I always save this place for good moments. Cheese and meat plate is a must have. I also love pork belly and salmon tartare. Small pizzas are beyond expectation.
a great choice for a night out
Foodies - I wouldn't consider myself a foodie, but my goodness, the food was amazing. So many things to try and taste and discover. Being able to order a few at a time and share made the whole experience even better. Wine list - can't even describe - if you want it, they probably have it or something better. Ambience - yes it's a bit loud, but it was still a great time. Came there with a friend, will come back with a group too... Wait staff - very knowledgeable , attentive, and overall good people Price - perfectly priced for the quality. 2 people : 2 mixed drinks (one a double), a bottle of wine, 4 courses , dessert - $140.
38 out of 100
Pretty expensive for slightly above average food. Very noisy. Our waiter was very good.
Great Birthday Dinner
I took my sister here for her birthday. Neither of us had been before and we were impressed by the food, drinks, and atmosphere. The only thing I will say was less than perfect was the bar, it took a long time to get our drinks when we ordered from our table. Other than that, I loved very bit of the restaurant. It was hip and appealing to a young crowd without being too yuppie or hipster for families,
First visit to Parallel 38 and it won't likely be our last. Great selection of tapas and ala carte dishes to please everyone. We will be more savvy our next visit and order differently as our dishes came out one or two at a time. Our server was helpful and attentive; food runners also provided an intro of each dish. Price will make this a more "special occasion" place for us.
My Experience at Parallel 38
Overall this restaurant is ok, this is not a place where I will frequently dine. The service was so, so. It took 40 minutes to receive a drink order from the time we entered the restaurant. It was ten minutes before the server even arrived at our table. This place is not very pleasant due to the noise. It was hard to hear the server even speak on a Saturday night. They need some acoustic tiles to help with noise control. The place has attractive décor but that is overshadowed by the noise and cold feel. The best positive about Parallel 38 is that the food was delicious although the portions are small and pricey.

We thought the menu read far better than the food actually was. We ordered the sautéed calimari with fennel. The menu did not indicate that the fennel was pickled and it was a cold serving. The pickling overpowered the calimari. We expected the beef tartar to be served with a bread or cracker- it apparently didn't though they were nice enough to bring some when we requested it. The cauliflower was very tasty but only slightly warm when served. Our waiter seemed very distracted- he indicated that he got stuck in the kitchen. The wine list was extraordinary, maybe even too much for the menu.
Food is consistently good. Been there twice in last 3 weeks. Service is generally very good, although the servers need to be more informative on wine offerings. Small plate dishes are consistently very good and provide a wonderful way to sample lots of different dishes without getting stuffed. Really pleased with the risotto of the day, which was superb. Lamb and calamari were excellent. Wednesday night 2 for 1 special was a pleasant surprise and one that would bring us back.
Fun place to meet friends
The food here is great. There are a lot of interesting food experiences to share with friends or family. The outdoor seating is ideal. The indoor atmosphere is somewhat loud because of the acoustics. If there is a large group, the noise level is uncomfortable. We have eaten there several times and plan to do so again many times in the future. The wine list is amazing.
Timing is everything
The food was terrific. I love the tapas/sharing style. My only complaint - the server had represented that the service of the dishes would be spaced out so that we wouldn't be "bombarded", but in fact everything was brought to the table one right after the other so it was all there at basically the same time.

The place was packed but we feel we were lucky because our waiter was on top of his game! He met all our needs.
It took way to long for food to be served. The waiter was apologetic but innatentive. The manager apologized but some of our food never did arrive before we gave up and left.
This was my first time dining there and it was good. Their Mediterranean food was definitely better than their Italian. Their dip (chose 3) was delicious ever single one! We all got pasta dishes that were good. Their gnocchi was different more like dough than potato but still yummy! HUGE wine selection. Will go back and try different dishes for variety!

Had one of the best meals to date here and it was only lunch. Everything we had was phenomenal and the service was incredible. I live in Richmond but would travel back for this place.
Great food and wine
We were in Charlottesville for a day and are so glad we found Parallel 38. Small plates were excellently prepared and presented, and a wide variety. Over 100 wines by the glass with a good selection of origins and range of prices. Ordering dishes sequentially worked well--they were delivered quickly after the order. Very good waitstaff.
Lots of Great Choices
Although my wife and I had been to P38 the week before we had no problem returning after seeing the movie The Martian next door (a great movie). With the extensive menu we knew that we could have several great dishes and not have to repeat any dish from our prior visit. Highlights were the spaghetti with oil poached tomatoes and roasted garlic and the spicy tuna tar tare. We also tried the grilled skirt steak for the first time. With skirt steak you normally sacrifice tenderness for flavor. We were surprised that this skirt steak was not only very flavorful but also very tender. We asked our server how the chef managed this feat and he said that Chef John marinates the steak for three days in a vacuum sealed bag. I subsequently looked into buying a vacuum sealing machine since I use lots of marinades during grilling season but concluded it's a lot of work. This dish is an example of creativity of the kitchen staff and their willingness to take the extra steps to produce a high quality dish. I should have mentioned that the spaghetti is house made. It's more work but it taste better. Given the work that goes into preparation and the quality of the ingredients I find P38 to be very reasonably priced. To compliment the great food is a great wine list which is also reasonably priced.
