Paragon is a neighborhood gastropub serving ingredient-driven, honest food, craft beers, unique cocktails and eclectic wines. Located in the South of Market (SOMA) district of San Francisco and just one block from AT&T Park, Paragon features loft-like ceilings, custom décor and a roll-up garage door that leads out onto a sunny outdoor patio. Paragon's design aesthetic fits perfectly in this industrial-meets-artsy neighborhood: reclaimed barn wood and hand-painted subway tiles can be admired throughout the restaurant and the lounge area is flanked by a giant chalkboard announcing the available craft beers above a well-worn communal table made out of rusted metal and reclaimed Koa wood.

Small menu but nice place to go before Giants game

I've enjoyed Paragon just about every time we've been. However, you can rarely get a table in the front. We've requested it every time and never have been able to get one. If your table is in the back, where they seem to always sit us, they are very close together be prepared to hear every word of your neighbors conversations. The food is good ( but pricey ) it's the location to the ball park that keeps us going back. You'll pay more (inside the park) for less tasty food.

Casual dining in AT&T Park area

Dined on April 13, 2016

Liked the gastro pub atmosphere. The salmon was nice with the crisp skin and perfectly cooked. One guest enjoyed the pork loin with it's strong rosemary flavor. The short ribs were tender and succulent. The brussels sprouts and asparagus were nicely seasoned. The service was fine; we had no long wait for our food to arrive. There was no game so we had no problems with traffic. Parking is a little hard around the restaurant. All in all everyone had a nice time. Would recommend this place for upscale casual dining.

Significantly disappointed

Dined on April 10, 2016

We arrived before opening time which was 11am. It was cold and drizzly, all outdoor tables and chairs were wet from an earlier rain. We were not allowed to wait indoors. I could understand why that was the case. We had ask to get some outdoor seating wiped off. I had the hamburger, yes the $18 hamburger and fries. The garlic fries were just ok. The sliced pickles were different, not really dill pickles. I ordered the meat medium well. I know what that means. There was no pink inside at all. One side was charred way too much. The other side was totally BURNT, like an 1/4 inch thick of burnt. Put together it tasted terrible. I ate about 1/2 of the burger, that's all I could stand. Service was mediocre at best, probably a little worse than mediocre. Had a Bloody Mary, asked for not very spicy. First one was good. Second one was so spicy I left about half there in the glass. I'll be going back to Momo's, or one of the dozen other places in the neighborhood.

It's our favorite place to have a drink and eat before the Giants game. We enjoy the good food and drink. It's expectedly noisy on game days, but that's part of the fun.

A nice pre-game place with good beer and not too loud. The menu has been changed, but not for the better. I miss the mushroom cigars, grilled cheese and tomato soup. The hamburger is still great and a good send off for a Giants game victory.

It wasn't bad but it does not come close to what I would expect from a restaurant in San Francisco. I can not really knock the food, it was not bad, it is just that there was nothing special about it, nothing unique about the experience either, kind of like an expensive version of chili's.

Paragon Good

vip
Dined on February 10, 2016

I met two former colleagues at Paragon for dinner. I chose the restaurant so that I would not have to deal with the traffic going across San Francisco. I had been to Paragon once before for a larger group dinner where the menu had been fixed. It was a pretty quiet night. The service was very good. I thought that the menu was pretty limited. The colleagues had the salmon. I had the steak--not very good. The wine list was also limited, although the pinot noir we chose was very good. All in all, if I need to eat near the Giants ballpark, I would consider Paragon--but not for fine dining.

Giants Season or Not, great lunch place

Dined on February 9, 2016

I'm guessing Paragon's high time is during the SF Giants season. We were lucky and popped in for a pre-SFFD meeting lunch (their Headquarters are across the street). Anyway, as always, met with outstanding front-of-the-house folks and led to our table. Both of us had a seafood selection, and it was very good. Highly recommend for their lunch selection; I have never ventured to Paragon for dinner, but I'm sure it is just as good!

Needs Work

Dined on December 16, 2015

We went to Paragon for our annual Christmas luncheon. There were 10 of us. 5 of us ordered the fish and chips. Everyone else's plate had 4 warm pieces of fish and warm fries, while mine had three lukewarm tiny pieces of fish and lukewarm fries. When I asked about the discrepancy in the amount of fish, the waitress seemed annoyed and said she would take care of it. I tried to hand my plate to her for replacement, but instead she brought me a piece of fish on a bread plate. So I still had cold fries and three pieces of cold fish. Very unprofessional for the price.

Awful

Dined on December 13, 2015

We wanted to celebrate with a magnum bottle of wine. I tired to call the restaurant to inquire about the corkage fee. The line would only go to voicemail. I left a message stating I had a reservation that night and it was important to call me back. They did not. When we arrived we asked the hostess what the corkage fee was and she said $25 and I asked if that included magnums and she said yes. We also ordered 7 cocktails between the 5 adults one of which was $26. AFTER the bottle was opened and consumed the hostess came up and told me she made a mistake and I said she should honor what was quoted. The manager came over and squatted down and argued with me about how the hostess was wrong. I tried to explain if the fee was $50 I would have just put the bottle back in the car and that it isn't right to change the price after the fact. I told her I tried to find out what the fee was in advance but the restaurant wasn't accessible. She was rude and condescending and went into how they just lost their manager. I said that wasn't related to this situation . She basically caused a scene in the middle of the restaurant and wouldn't let it go. To add insult to injury 3 of the short rib diners came out cold and over cooked. I could almost see it if we just our brought our own wine but we also ordered cocktails from the bar. The waitress was excellent and the appetizers were very good. I didn't like the lamb pasta but that could just be my tastes as opposed to the quality, however, the short ribs were not good.

This year not as good as past years

Dined on November 27, 2015

We have been going to the Paragon for Thanksgiving for a few years now. This year was not as good as past years. It seemed like the quality of the food was poorer this year, and we did not receive the customary "to go" bag with bread, etc. to make a turkey sandwich the next day. That was such a cool thing to do. The server was just OK, not super friendly, and she forgot our side order, so I had to ask for it from another server. I am grateful that the Paragon is open on Thanksgiving, and grateful for the staff who work that evening. It just seemed like a lesser experience than we've had in the past.

vip
Dined on October 3, 2015

Paragon is a great place to spend your pre-game cocktails and munchies as it sits 1 block up from AT&T Park and the Giants. Nice food and cocktails. Good outside patio for people watching as folks walk to the game. But now that the season is over, I just can't see myself visiting as there are far better places for less cost and only a few blocks away.

Confused by the hype

Dined on September 29, 2015

This restaurant came highly recommended by two people from SF and when I tried to change my reservation from 5 people to 7 people, was told that there was no way my group could be accommodated. So, we kept the reservation for 5. When we got to the restaurant we were the only patrons in the place. Another two people came in sometime during our time there but the rest of the restaurant remained empty. Our server was sweet but there was some miscommunication when we arrived apparently because it took forever to be greeted and waited on. Despite the lack of people, not all of the menu items were available because they had run out. What we are was fine, cocktails were fine, but nothing spectacular.

Dined on September 17, 2015

I used to work at Paragon at the San Jose location before it closed down. I enjoyed the food, but there were some things that could have been better. The one dessert I was waiting for, the banana bread pudding was disappointing. It didn't taste the same as I last had it before. The bread was suppose to have a crispy edge. Perhaps they used a different bread for their dessert. Service was not up to par. Although it was a busy evening due to a Giant's game night, we were hoping to receive more attention from our server. We ended up waiving our hands for the busser's attention. He too seemed to have a terrible day and rolls his eyes as he got us a togo box as requested. We waited uncomfortably for the check as we saw our server tending other tables and giving a particular table more attention than us. Perhaps the other table was a regular, we don't know. Maybe because our table was tucked away behind a pole. Despite it all, I expected quality service at Paragon as I have worked under the same restaurant, different location. I suppose it is just not the same. Will I return? Perhaps, maybe a quick bite at the bar instead.

Love Paragon before a Giants' game"

Dined on September 15, 2015

When we get tired of ballpark food, we head to Paragon. Reservations are usually needed before a game. The service is excellent and the food is always great. We love their salads and fish dishes. It is fun to be dining with fellow Giants fans. Also, love their selection of beer. This has been a go to place for us for the past 15 years.

Good place to eat before Giants game

vip
Dined on September 15, 2015

I took my sons to a Monday night Giants game and found Paragon through Open Table. We were 15 minutes early but were seated right away (not all restaurants do that!). We really liked the ambiance and location. The food was not as good. My watermelon salad was a C-, my son's pork chop a B but my other son's cheeseburger looked like an A (and he loved it). Our waiter was good but very busy and hard to flag down. I would go back but would order something else.

Worst Restaurant Service I've Ever Experienced

Dined on September 6, 2015

We were in town for the Billy Joel concert last Saturday night. We booked a reservation 3 weeks in advance. One of the reasons we booked there was for their close proximity to AT&T park and we heard good things about the restaurant... Boy were they wrong! It took them over an hour to bring us our appetizer, which we had to ask for repeatedly. Right from the beginning I knew it wasn't going to be a good experience since it took them 35 minutes to bring us a drink. After waiting over an hour for our food he told us they ran out of the dish I ordered! We finally got our food after waiting more than an hour and a half. There were no apologies to us until we complained. I have never been treated so rudely and experienced such bad service, especially in a restaurant that deals with ballpark crowds. Stay away!!

Bon appetite

Dined on September 5, 2015

We had dinner there before the Billy Joel concert and it was fabulous. The wait staff couldn't do enough for us. There were so many different choices on the menu, it was hard to choose. We had a cornmeal crusted trout with pecans which was one of the best I have ever had. We topped it off bread pudding that was out of this world. If your looking for a wonderful restaurant, I highly recommend it.

This was our second visit. The first time we came without reservations, stood in line with everyone who had reservations waiting for the doors to open and found a seat at the bar for dinner. Food was excellent. I had a steak, my husband had fish. Yesterday we used Open Table to reserve a 5:30 table post-game. We arrived at 4:30 when the game ended. We were seated promptly, which was nice. Husband had ribs which he liked. I had rainbow trout which I liked after I poured off about one cup of browned butter. Fish was delicate and perfectly cooked, just served drowning in butter.

Be careful if it's a game day

Dined on August 29, 2015

The reservation I made was for a Saturday brunch. However, when we reached, due to a Giants' game, the whole menu was out of whack. I understand the reason for the menu choice but would have appreciated if this was informed while booking our spot. There were no eggs on the very limited menu, which included basically nothing but chicken wings, burgers and a few salads. The beers on tap are always good though. This is a restaurant I like, but will probably not go there on a game day!

Paragon Pleases

Dined on August 9, 2015

We had a 545 pm reservation and arrived 15 minute's early. We were seated immediately. It took a few minutes to receives drink service orders but the server was apologetic and prompt once she met us. Due to an event at AT&T Park, the restaurant was instantly packed when it opened but we had great food and good service. We made our event with time to spare. The NY steak, pork chop and Mexican street corn wwere to die for. Perfectly cooked and well presented. The panzanela salad with watermelon was different but provided a refreshing starter on a summer evening. Overall, the first time experience was a huge success and really nice experience. We will be going back to take in the outdoor seating and the huge bar selection of wines and beers. Cheers Paragon!
