About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Neighborhood gem
  • Charming
No. 246 offers “OG” red sauce, classic Italian – a reimagined direction that marks a new era for the Decatur gem, paying homage to the old-school, Italian dining scenes of yesteryear. From chefs Drew Belline and Ford Fry, the menu showcases the likes of spicy rigatoni vodka and a bowl of meatballs in gravy plus remixed, throwback to classics like calamari marinara, cheesy garlic bread, Nonna-approved pizzas and pastas and secondi crowd-pleasers like chicken al limone and shrimp scampi – plus classic cocktails and a carefully curated wine list of American and Italian standouts. I have been to 246 many times and have even hosted events there, but have to say this past experience has shown a significant decrease in the food quality and honestly, for some Dishes is only a notch or two above something like a Carrabbas or Olive Garden. The meatballs were good but not so tender-pretty firm. The panzanella salad, albeit tasty, was very overdressed-so much so that there was easily 1/4-1/3 cup of dressing at the bottom of the bowl. Plus it was mainly bread rather than tomatoes/veggies dotted with the bread. But the pastas were the weakest link in our meal. I ordered the black spaghetti, which I’ve had there before, and my husband ordered the scallop puttanesca. Both pastas were absolutely swimming in sauce and the pasta itself was way past Al dente and almost mushy. The puttanesca was missing that salty brinyness that should be there and really was just soupy tomato sauce dotted with just a few olives. And there were very few pieces of scallop, as well. The service was fine although several times our server roughly grabbed things away and banged spoons and dripped sauce on my husbands lap from her roughness and lack of finess. This is not something I am used to from 246 or any Ford Fry establishment. We have often enjoyed our time there and appreciate the fine and careful approach to fresh Italian food (especially dining at the chefs counter), but admittedly I’m not sure we will return anytime soon. I strongly suggest taking a look at who is preparing the food and having better QC and perhaps resetting.

Extremely high-energy indoors, almost chaotic, the tables were very close together meaning we could clearly hear the neighboring tables' conversations even with the high noise level of the restaurant. The service was decent, but the particular server our table had was sub-par, one time even walking away when we were asking questions about the menu.

I’ve been here a few times and it’s by far my favorite Italian spot to get food at. Every time tastes as good as the first time. Highly recommend. Good for a date with the wife or dinner with family.

Our server was top notch and helped us with the wine pairings. Two of us had chicken entrees which were incredibly dry and rather disappointing. We had tiramisu for dessert which was a lovely ending to the meal. You can tell that they have a pastry chef who knows their craft! Well done!

We ran late because driving through a monsoon caused traffic but Camille, was flawless in her handling of our SOS. As always, service was impeccable. Our server was outstanding and made wonderful suggestions. And I would be remiss if I didn’t state how fantastic all the other individuals who came into contact with our table were. See you soon!
