Special Dining Experience
This a great place to dine especially for special occasions. Although a bit pricey it's well worth the money. Great wine list that includes affordable bottles. And the staff provides outstanding service without being intrusive. They even came up with a pair of reading glasses when I left mine in the car.
Another Excellent Meal at Nicholas!
Nicholas never fails to please and this time was no exception. For starters, I had the Hand Rolled Orecchiette with Spring Pesto, Fennel, Lemon Crème Fraiche. The pasta was perfectly prepared and the sauce was perfect - light and fresh. My wife had the Seared Hudson Valley Foie Gras and it too was excellent. For the main course, I had the Slow Braised Short Ribs which were serve with polenta, braised escarole and an oregano chimichurri and again I have nothing but good things to say about it. However, the star of the night was my wife's Panko Crusted Halibut. The fish was crispy on the outside and perfectly cooked on the inside and would have been enough to warrant a rave review, but the Spring Pea Risotto may well have been the showstopper. The risotto was creamy and rich and like the spring pesto in the starter course was full of spring freshness. We intended to share one dessert but our head waiter seemed determined to convince me to order two so I agreed. When they brought out the desserts I understood why. We had mentioned that we were celebrating our anniversary so the desserts were specially prepared with a decorative header with Happy Anniversary on it. Just another example of the top notch service provided by all of the staff at Nicholas.
Outstanding Cuisine & Service! Decore a Bit Dated.
This was our third time here in about 7 years (three kids later making it difficult to come as often as we'd like)! The food and service is incredible and quite honestly, perfect. Such a well thought out amd seasonal menu. When dating, we ate out all over Manhattan's best restaurants. The quality and taste here is just impeccable! With that said, for such perfection, I believe the dining room could use a bit of a makeover or updating. Particularly the wall color, carpeting and furniture fabric. So well kept and clean, etc. But colors and all just look outdated. For fresh, high end, outstanding and current dishes, the dining room one eats it in should feel the same. Those three things would be such a simple and big improvement if as well thought out of an update as the menu. Looking forward to our next dinner experience at Nicholas!

1st time diner. Quiet enjoyable evening. Attentive service coupled with 2 different terrific fish dishes for my wife and I. 3 course meal was definitely the way to go. Loved the Juliana Layla white wine. Look forward to our 2nd visit in the future.
Excellent all around, each course was perfectly done. Crispy Octopus was incredible. Seared black bass with a mussel sauce was perfect. Poached butter lobster was out of this world delicious. FYI, t he food here is very very rich in nature so expect smaller portions
Another great dinner
I had the pork tortellini appetizer that was fantastic. I also had the filet mignon that was prepared to the perfect temperature. My client raved over the octopus appetizer and the braised suckling pig. The homemade breads were plentiful and they constantly came back to see if you wanted to try a different one or wanted more of the sane. A little on the pricey side but well worth the money.

Hard to believe that Nicholas is a driveway turn off Route 35--elegant yet simple, sophisticated yet approachable, exotic yet familiar. We had the chef's tasting menu and each course offered myriad ingredients that were complex in flavor yet recognizable. The service was professional but congenial. The interior matched the cuisine in every way -- creative, surprising, and beautiful. From the breads to the amuse bouche, to the main courses and dessert, we were delighted. A special restaurant and one without pretense!
This was not just a wonderful meal-it was a true dining experience. It was a birthday celebration for my husband and he thanked me 3 times as he truly appreciates good food and wine. He knows the hard work that goes into such a wonderful experience. The staff was efficient without being noticed. A keeper !!
Best pasta I've ever tasted!
My husband and I are foodies. We've been to all the iron chefs restaurants in Manhattan. Nicholas surpassed our expectations by offering the most delicious homemade pasta we have ever enjoyed. So lucky to have this gem 5 minutes from our red bank home. Loved it!
Lovely from beginning to end.
We came here for our birthdays after hearing about it from friends for years. Bit of a hike for us, 45 minutes....but so worth it! Food, service, loved! To be honest, I really think their decor needs to be updated, BUT, everything else more than made up for that. Go!

We had a fabulous dinner and the service was exceptional! I would highly recommend this for a special occasion too.
You don't need a special occasion
From the moment we arrived -the amuse bouche to the last bite of the coconut souffle - this is a gastronomical experience! Don't miss this outstanding restaurant. Turnip soup with honey and shaved chocolate; hand rolled cavatelli with braised oxtail; Potato Gnocchi, Fried Shallots, Smoked Poblano, Cave Aged Cheddar Crème; Dover Sole! All cooked to perfection, each flavor, each bite - wonderful. A beautiful room with exceptional service. Can not wait to go back!

Food and service was wonderful. My husband and I both had 3 course meals and loved it. I would change the spaetzle recipe because it was very rubbery . The decor and overall feel of the restaurant was boring and stuffy. We were seating in an area that felt like it was for parties and kept away from the main dinning area. No manager came over to see how we were, the waitress we had was nice but again everything was just boring. The the price and quality of food I would have expected more!
Eager for us to leave
Obviously we "stayed too long" as they came near our table pretending to look around but it was quite evident what the reason was. Lost a few points with us.

We have been in Nicholas restaurant many times before but sadly this is the last time we went there.Even though the food is undeniably very good the hospitality is not.
Value for money? No.
This was my disappointment with Nicholas. Food was good, but by no means worth the price paid.
For a special occasion, v-day, a bit pricey, but will be back for sure. We would like to try the standard menu.

Such a lovely evening at Restaurant Nicholas. We've been wanting to come here for a while and my husband surprised me with an early Valentines reservation. We did the tasting menu without wine pairings and chose to order a bottle of something we both enjoy. The food was wonderful, the signature suckling pig dish and the Arctic char were the standouts and the citrus dessert was amazing. Such a refreshing way to end a big meal. The service was outstanding, completely professional and knowledgeable without any air of pretentiousness that you sometimes find in a fine dining setting. We will certainly make the hour long drive back, it was really that pleasant of an evening.

Dining in this restaurant was a real treat. The dining room was beautifully decorated, and the volume of table chatter was reduced due to the acoustic tiles on the ceiling, so it was very each to have a quiet conversation at the table. The service was extraordinary, from the welcome to the detailed explanation of each course. I had ordered roses for the table for my wife (35th wedding anniversary), and they were waiting on our table when we were seated. The menu was explained, and the selections were plentiful. The scallop appetizer I selected was delicious, and our dinner entries of lobster and short ribs were out of this world. They also brought special selections from the chef for us to enjoy, which were unexpected and wonderful. The desserts were to die for, and completed a truly wonderful meal. They asked about the event we were celebrating, and they brought decorated dessert plates out with a beautiful "Happy 35th Anniversary" scroll made by the chef. A total home run!!
Good food but does not accept Visa Gift Cards
Food was excellent, service was good. Don't anticipate paying with visa gift cards. For some reason they do not accept them, even though they work like regular visa credit cards.
The Best of The Best
Our experience at Nicholas was exquisite. The food and service was exceptional. Our server , Frank and his staff were attentive and informative without being intrusive. A true fine dining experience. My wife and I have dined here for special occasions and to splurge about 5 times a year. We were thrilled to host our two adult children and their spouses for my wife's birthday and their first visit here. It raised the bar for them as they were blown away by the experience. Three had the Chef's Tasting Menu, two had lobster entrée, one had octopus app and veal entrée. The food was spectacular. Nicholas was so gracious as to give an informative tour of the kitchen to my daughter and I after our meal. So grateful to have this gem in our neighborhood.
As always a wonderful experience. Wait staff tremendous, food exquisite... did it for our anniversary and had a wonderful time. My wife and I will eat here two or three times a year in the dining room, however, the bar is a great place to eat at a fraction of the cost. Sign up for the Nicholas emails and get the latest wine discounts. Ask for "Table 42" if it's your anniversery as it is very cozy with a great view of the dining room.
This is really upscale restaurant....but beware,as once you make reservation you cannot cancel as I tried to cancel and was told they will charge $100 to my credit card...I was not aware of it when I reserved!

I took a friend for her birthday. We have been before and if course we had another fabulous meal. We both had the tasting menu and as always it did not disappoint. I had the oysters and the taste just exploded in your mouth, my friend had the best salad and the flavors popped. My gnocchi was delicious, I mean really delicious and the soup was a 10! We both had the Arctic Char, the skin was crisp and the fish with the beans was great. I had the short ribs in polenta and oregano chimichri and polenta... to die for.....she had the suckling pig , it was wonderful. We both finished with Devils food cake, with Mexican hot chocolate ganache, marshmallows and cinnamon ice cream. It was to die for. The wine was fabulous, because Nicholas only has the best! Our experience was second to none and can't wait to go back.
The truffle tasting menu was wonderful. I'll be back for Truffle Week every year (as well as multiple visits in the interim).

Truffle menu shouldnt be missed. Although real truffles dont really taste like the fake truffle oil most of us are used to they actually are quite bland, just to manage expectations. Meal was still incredible.
Rated #1 in NJ for a reason
We have been to several of the top rated restaurants in NJ and all are excellent, but Nicholas stands out. We did the black truffle tasting menu. It was outstanding, presented beautifully, and worth every penny. Service was imbecible. Thank you all for a wonderful evening.
Great truffle dinner. All the courses were delicious and very creative as would be expected from Nicholas. One of the best special dinners I have had here.
We enjoy our cocktails very much, so when a BAR does not have the Classical ingredients for a GIMLET, our tastes sour. And the Vodka selection is limited too !! Tell Nicholas not to forget the Classic Cocktail, as he tends to favor the Wine Cellar over the cocktail menu !!
Rushed out! Three courses in 30 minutes. We were very disappointed and probably will not return unless it is to sit at the bar for a hamburger!
Great place for Special Occasions
Menu is expensive without a doubt, hence we go to Nicholas only for special occasions. BUT it is well worth every dollar!
Birthday bust! Should have just gone into the city
We went to Restaurant Nicholas for a birthday celebration dinner for six and it was just...meh. We opted to stay in New Jersey (instead of going into the city) based on Zagat's favorable rating but I'm just not sure this place even comes close to similar ratings in NYC. It seems like they are really trying in some respects but it just doesn't come off as fine dining. The menu sounds good but is clearly overly ambitious since most dishes were either 'flat' or 'almost great', according to our party's comments. The wine list is good but pricey. In a nutshell, it just didn't live up to our expectations for a special event, especially given the hefty (NYC-comparable) price tag.

Normally a 5 star experience all around, this time for Christmas Eve, we felt like things had degraded a bit, experience seemed rushed, food very good but not the usual "outstanding". Hope they're not slipping...
Had the 6 course tasting menu for Christmas Eve.
As usual, every plate was an explosion of flavors. The complementing wines were perfect. A special meal...as is always the case at Nicholas.
