Fave!

Dined 3 days ago

From the sidewalk, where staff had a setup for feeding taxi and Uber drivers, to the reception where I got my first birthday greeting, to our specially decorated table and our pleasant waiter, through the consistently delicious and gorgeously presented food, the entire experience was simply perfect!

Montrio birthday

Dined 4 days ago

The staff knew our party was celebrating a birthday, the table was festively decorated and they served the birthday girl a special dessert complete with candles. The wait staff was wonderful, food came out all at the same time and properly hot. Not always the case with larger parties. My only criticism is that there was some delay with cocktails. Great celebration at a great restaurant!

Our group enjoyed our meal. The service was good, and the food was delicious. My only criticism is there's a lack of sweet white wine on the list.

Great Spot!

Dined on April 25, 2016

We limped into Montrio after the Big Sur Marathon and boy are we glad that we did! Even though we had our carb load the night before we decided to try the sweet potato ravioli and risotto. AMAZING. Our server was so pleasant and the atmosphere was perfect. We decided to carb load here next year before the run. So great!!

Wonderful, interesting food - a bit rushed

Dined on April 21, 2016

Our server was great and helped guide us with the menu. The 5 spice run cocktail was interesting and tasty. The scallop appetizer was a "best bite", though the kale salad and kalettes were fabulous as well. The sirloin entrée was outstanding, though the brick chicken was very under seasoned. The bread pudding dessert was delicious - though I'd rather have had more raspberries than the unnecessary ice cream with it. It was a wonderful meal. The only downside is our courses were rushed. We had 3 of them in the first 30 minutes of seating (the entrée arriving before we finished our salad) - when I said something to our server. She indicated the kitchen may have been rushing to get ours out before a large party. Disappointing, but the timing was corrected for the rest of the meal.

The food was great here. We had a mix up with our first round of drinks. Service seemed to sort of fall of from there. Overall food was great and we had a good time. A little more attentive service would make this place excellent.

LOVED Montrio Bistro!

Dined on April 17, 2016

I made a reservation several weeks in advance of our trip to Monterey to celebrate my husbands birthday. I added in the reservations notes section that we were celebrating his special day that evening. Upon checking into Montrio Bistro, they wished my husband a happy birthday. Right then, I was already impressed. We were taken upstairs to find Happy Birthday confetti sprinkled on our table. Another sweet gesture! We had such a great time that evening. The food was delicious, the service was great! The mixed drinks we had were some of the best we have ever had, anywhere. After we declined dessert and ordered our coffees, they brought him a special birthday treat which was their version of the "It's It" ice cream sandwich. My husband isn't a fan of sweet so I happily ate it and can vouch for how delish it was! Overall, we had a fantastic evening here and are already planning our next visit. Cant wait to dine with Montrio Bistro again!

Noisy Downstairs

Dined on April 17, 2016

We were originally seated downstairs, straight ahead from the entrance, but it was so noisy we asked to be seated outside -- even though it looked like it might be a little cool . They suggested we sit upstairs where it's quieter, & that made all the difference. My husband & I ended up sharing 4 small -medium plates plus a terrific BLT salad. Memorable Italian coffee for dessert. Service was attentive but unobtrusive. Re the noise downstairs: we noticed they have hung multiple puffy fabric clouds from the ceiling downstairs to absorb the noise, but it's still loud. If you like dining in a quieter atmosphere, ask for a window table upstairs.

Exceeded Expectations

Dined on April 16, 2016

Our experience at Montrio Bistro was beyond awesome. Our server, Jose, has been there 16 years, and we noticed the excellent teamwork between staff and kitchen. We chose small plates - smoked salmon with pickled fennel & citrus- best ever!; BLT salad; Butchers Butter, Mac & Cheese (good, but not life-changing), ham with the balls of deliciousness; s'mores & Creme Brulee -- it sounds like a ton of food, but they timed it just right. We left there satisfied but not stuffed. It definitely lives up to its #1 status in Monterrey.

Favorite restaurant in Monterey

Dined on April 16, 2016

My friends and I were in Monterey for a golf tournament, I would not go to any other restaurant suggested. It was Montrio Bistro or I wasn't going. Well I won and then they understood why. The special of the day was fresh Alaskan halibut on a bed of sautéed arugula and green peas, accompanied by to wedges fried polenta. This was framed on the plate by a ring of herb oil (green), a ring of lemon vinaigrette (yellow) and a ring of pureed caramelized onions (brown). Amazingly delicious. Our waiter Jose, was efficient, friendly and personable (without being overbearing). The only negative, we thought the corkage fee was a little steep at $25.

"Go to" restaurant

Dined on April 14, 2016

Montrio Bistro is one of our favorite places to dine. The food is fantastic. They offer small and large plates so if your looking for a light supper of wine and tapas they have it covered. If your looking for something substantial they have that covered too. The staff are very friendly and attentive. Regardless of whether your a local or visitor to the Monterey area they treat everyone as if they are family. The quality of the food justifies their prices. They have a steady stream of clientele so recommend making reservations.

Dined on April 13, 2016

It has been a number of years since we were here. This turned out to be a disappointment. The BLT salad was good, not great. The short rib dinner had a lot of tomato which masked the wonderful beef flavor. Only average short rib dish. We found the dessert menu to be fairly uninteresting as well. Just an average evening.

Great food

Dined on April 9, 2016

Unlike other restaurants, I'm most impressed by the fact that Montrio's menu is not a multi-page document but rather a compact set of signature meals. Their 'Monterey Bay wild salmon' with citrus risotto & baked tomato Nduja sauce, and a halibut (fish-of-the-day, therefore not found in the current on-line menu) were absolutely delicious. The citrus risotto - quite an unexpected combination - was superb. What was great for two was half-bottle wine options. A big plus was local wines (which I tried), and aptly-named cocktails (such as Big Bang Theory and Fractured Fairy Tale) (which I actually didn't, but the names sound nice).

Disappointing

vip
Dined on April 2, 2016

We've eaten at Montero many times over the years but this visit was disappointing. The food definitely went down a notch or two since our last visit. E ordered the 2 dishes recommended my our waiter and both of them were over-prepared. Adding too many disparate elements can ruin a dish that a more straightforward preparation would be better. For example, the roasted artichoke came with a roasted eggplant relish. While I envisioned an eggplant dipping sauce, that artichoke arrived swimming in the stuff. While I like the bustling bistro atmosphere of the main dining room, they seated us upstairs in their private dining venue. I missed the energy. Our waiter was very competent.

Some good, some OK

Dined on March 27, 2016

Very attentive service. Very nice menu selection...diverse. My wife had the Kobe burger which was excellent. I had the duck, a favorite of mine, and I have to say that for my taste the bird was highly over salted and cherry glaze pretty dull in flavor. The sides were also OK..char grilled broccoli and some sort of corn bread muffin that was also somewhat flavorless. I would hate to rate the entire restaurant on one bad dish, but for an upscale restaurant the preparation lacked attention to detail and flavor.

Repetitious Flavor

Dined on March 26, 2016

Everything was tasty for the most part. The calamari comes with like a smokey chipotle dipping sauce. I had the Scallops that was prepared the same as the Salmon that my friend had and it came with a similar flavor chipotle sauce. I just found the flavors to be a little repetitious. Last time I was there I felt like I had the same experience. It was months ago and maybe I ordered the same dish. It was tasty just not the most delicious food I've ever had.

Surprise Superb Find

Dined on March 14, 2016

We happened upon Montrio Bistro by chance, in staying at the quaint Monterey Hotel. We rerouted back to this wonderful Bistro on our last night in Monterey because our first night was so memorable! The food is up there with the best in classic cuisine with superb adaptations in creative flare! Sumptuous risotto and a not to be missed scallop dish and especially not to be missed bacon specialty in this ultra friendly yet sophisticated dining experience... "Experience" because all of your senses are pleasantly satisfied in the amazing ambiance, sonic vibe and excellent wine list to accompany the tastiest of morsels! The only problem I could find was not having another evening to try the rest of the menu. I will be back, to be sure, for more! PS: Do not miss the bread pudding when one of the delightful staff, Scott and Cesar will take excellent care of you, offers dessert!!

Montrio continues to impress

vip
Dined on March 14, 2016

We returned to Montrio for a post concert dinner. The four of us ate like royalty for a very reasonable prince. The special drinks were all high quality, and not frou-frou at all. The duck confit popcorn was a delicious yet light appetizer. For our main course we split the ribeye four ways. I have to say, the experience was akin to bistecca fiorentina in Florence! Fantastic.

Dined on March 5, 2016

We spent my mothers 72nd birthday there. First time for both of us. I usually visit Monterey once or twice a year. This place was recommended to me by a friend who also visits the area frequently and recently dined with you all. It was a definite success! Mouth watering salmon with risotto was delicious, perfectly cooked. My mother had your aged New York steak and enjoyed it so much that she is still talking about it to all the ladies. Service was right on par, we had everything we needed when we needed it. Can't remember the servers name but she was very delightful and efficient. I will be returning to the area in September I will be sure to have dinner there again.
