Michael Smith Ratings and Reviews
Michael Smith is one of (if not THE) best dining experiences in Kansas City... you literally cannot go wrong with any item Michael & Nancy offer... go. Often. (Especially on Thursdays) (Italian Night) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
We dined at the restaurant for my son's 22nd birthday and from the moment we walked in the door our service was exceptional. Our server was personable and knowledgeable, walking us through drink and entree options. Food and drink arrived at a pace that allowed for dinner conversation without feeling rushed or prolonged wait times. The serving temperatures were perfect with salads cold and fresh and hot food hot not tepid. The highlight the evening was when Chef Smith visited the table and to my son an aspiring chef. We are looking forward to eating there again soon.
We had a fantastic experience. Food was amazing!
Food was amazing! Wine was amazing! Service was above and beyond the top!
Sophisticated menu in a relaxed atmosphere.
I've been going to Michael Smith one and off for a number of years when I visit Kansas City. The menus are consistently imaginative and the food is some of the best to be found in a very crowded field of great dining choices. What sets Michael Smith off from the rest for me is the expansive dining room with tables far enough apart that you aren't hearing everyone's conversation. I usually find that the diners are a good mix of formally and informally attired folks--some on their way to performances others just enjoying a night on the town. Great place and terrific food and expert service.
Saturday night dinner

Good food. Maybe not exceptional for Kansas City now. Great service. The dining room is nice but a bit staid
Good but Pricey
Innovative dishes blending uncommon ingrediants and flavors. Some work better than others. Pasta dishes seem underdone but that's just a personal preference. Food is good but on the pricey side for what get. Service was excellent, however.
This is by Far one of my Favorite Places in KC... Probably no.1.... Food is Amazing!!... Classy, Creative, Inventive, Tasteful and Great Quality Ingredients.... Good Wine and Liquor Menu. Quiet and Serene Atmosphere... Great View of the New KC Train.... An A+++ Experience!!
Great food good service!!!
Great food good service!!!
A Kansas City gem
Great, food, probably one of the best places I have ever eaten at
We shared the orecchiette pasta as an appetizer, two different salads, the filet and pancetta wrapped chicken breast. Hardly a morsel left on any plates. If you can't decide on a wine - ask Nancy for advise. She'll make sure you have something you like.
Best in KC
Michael Smiths is absolutely the best restaurant in Kansas City. Dine there often and it is consistently superb. So creative. Always the freshest ingredients and unique ingredients as well. Great vino list. We are so lucky to have his talent in KC.

We have enjoyed Michael Smith on many occasions and so were surprised by very subpar service on this visit. Our server was cold from the outset and reacted combatively to our constructive feedback regarding one of the courses (a lobster bisque that lacked cream.) Servers we have had in the past were nowhere to be seen, so we hope that this is not the new service standard at Michael Smith.
How to treat a customer like a chump
My lamb was pretty good, but not enough food. Vegetables were just OK. I left hungry. Service was good until the bill was presented. My bill contained an unauthorized charge for an “extra pour” of booze. I didn’t order a double. The waitress gave some nonsense rationale for the add-on charge. (I've been dining in fine restaurants and ordering cocktails for 40+ years and have never experienced this.) Neither the manager nor bartender came to my table to address my complaint. Michael Smith gained $1.50 in revenue, and lost a customer.
We did not enjoy our meal this evening. We have timpano, thought it was dry. A little too much spice in the marinara. My wife had issues that evening with the mussels. We had a disappointing evening.
Michael Smith is once more accessible since the construction of the streetcar rails disrupted the traffic. The food is always good. I usually have fish and enjoyed bream this time. It's a comfortable option when planning to go to the Kauffman Center.

Enjoyed the food and perfect service.
It was a special occasion so we had high expectations and as it turned out the staff made us feel right at home and special. We appreciate their attention to details. The food was perfectly prepared.

Excellent food, and chef Michael Smith came out to personally greet us during the meal.
If you have the pocketbook, it definitely worth it!
Our valentines day
We were placed in the corner next to two windows. It was freezing. We asked for a different table, and they did accommodate. We seemed to be the youngest diners in the restaurant at the time, and our server was extremely inattentive to us.

Excellent food, wine and service. Could not ask for anything more!
The four of us went to Michael Dmith on a Saturday night around 8:30 and the dining room was mostly empty. A nice enough place - open and basic. Too quiet, though - the noise from the tapas bar next door was noticeable throughout our meal. The amuse-bouche was quite good, as was our appetizer of ceviche. The cauliflower soup was the star of the evening, as odd as that sounds, as the entrees were dry and lackluster. Our waiter was awesome, though - very attentive and informative - and Chef himself was incredibly friendly. We'd give it another chance, but it'll have to wait a while.
Fantastic experience, fantastic food and fantastic people. Hands down one of the best dining experiences in Kansas City. I'd highly recommend.

The food was delicious and the service was outstanding.
RW 2016 Michael Smith Dinner
We arrived for our reservation about 3 minutes late. They seated us at a table for two right by the kitchen - it was busy to this wasn't unreasonable. It was a busy little intersection but not too disturbing. Our server was very attentive. The food was outstanding and the wine was delightful. All in all a good experience. My boyfriend had the 8 hour pork and I had the hanger steak. I wish I had gotten the 8 hour pork too. It was AMAZING! He had the lemon panne cotta - I had the chocolate cake. Honestly I wish I had had his meal. It was all fantastic. Mine was good - don't get me wrong - but his was oh la la delicious. I could go on but I am afraid I will start drooling. We will be back.
Amazing food and service
The first course included a salad for me and lobster bisque for my husband. We found a delightful bottle of wine to enjoy with our entrees. He had the eight hour pork and I chose the seafood linguini. Neither of us was disappointed. They were both scrumptious. We ended the meal with chocolate cake. Our server was a delightful young lady who was very attentive and helpful. We will return.

We were there for Restaurant Week and opted for the optional wine pairing. It was divine. I will be back!
One of the best!
This is one of my favorite restaurants and the food is always fantastic!

Food was good, but not outstanding which we have come to expect at KC's better restaurants like Novel, Bluestem, American, etc. Service and wine selection/quality were both very good.
I think I had such high expectations for Michael Smith because of its reputation, and while the food was good, it didn't strike me as anything special. I came during restaurant week and ordered the Hangar steak. It wasn't particularly tasty and a little chewy/tough. I would say the pork would have been a much, much better choice. I enjoyed the atmosphere, and would still give it another chance.

I went for Restaurant Week and it was a lovely evening. I am looking forward to returning, perhaps for my anniversary.
We'll definitely be back.
My girlfriends and I went to MS for KC restaurant week. As a result of past KC Restaurant week experiences, I expected some KC Restaurant week judgement from the staff and a possible lengthy weight. While we did wait some time to give our drink orders, the staff was very knowledgable, attentive and courteous. I was blown away by the sophistication of every menu item listed and we couldn't have been more impressed with the dishes themselves. As we couldn't decide on one, we all ordered one of each and shared. My girlfriends and I had a wonderful time and will definitely be back even if it isn't KC Restaurant week. Bravo!
Perfect for Date Night
Hubby and I tried Michael Smith's during Restaurant Week and we were so pleased we did. The food was tasty , service was excellent, and 3 courses for $33 was icing on the cake! Hubby had, orecchiette pasta, roasted hanger steak, and chocolate cake. I had, potato/leek soup, eight hour pork, and lemon panna cotta. Every course was simply delicious.
Tasting Menu --- Highly recommended
Although we have been to the companion small plate restaurant, Extra Virgin, it was our first time at the upscale Michael Smith location. We very much enjoyed the 4-course, Chef's choice, tasting menu. Dinner began with an outstanding dish of orecchiette, prepared al dente...not easy to do with small pastas. The entire food experience with each course was nicely done. The servers were helpful and took care of every request. This restaraunt deserves to be revisited.

The Champion Restaurant Michael Smith's is undoubtedly the best restaurant in Kansas City. The cuisine, wine selection, service and friendly atmosphere are always consistently exceptional. Our latest dining experience was on New Year's Eve and was a perfect way to end the year and welcome in 2016. One does not have to wait for special occasions to enjoy Michael Smith's however, because it is always an outstanding experience. The Champion of Kansas City
Undercooked fish and chicken
Two of the four fish entrees ordered were under-cooked. My son's chicken entree was undercooked as well. The price for the quality of food served was over-priced. The two duck entrees were very good. The staff did a nice job getting us to the symphony on time.
