About McMillin's Dining Room
Roche Harbor’s McMillin's Restaurant is located in the historic home of John S. McMillin built in 1886. In 1956, the late Reuben J. Tarte and his son, Neil, purchased Roche Harbor. By 1958, the Tarte family had restored many historic sites, including the restaurant, which was once the home of John S. McMillin. Additional seating in the restaurant was added in 1964, and the gazebo and deck were completed in 1977. On March 15, 1989, the Tarte family sold the resort to the current owners.
For over 40 years, the tradition of excellence has continued at Roche Harbor, the landmark boating and leisure destination resort that exists today. The restaurant remains a favorite for those who trek by land and sea to enjoy a truly unique dining experience on the very northwest tip of the Pacific Northwest.

McMillin's Dining Room Ratings and Reviews
Steaks good. Appetizers/salads lacked appeal.
Great view, friendly service. Steaks were excellent but salads and appetizers were lacking in luxury for the price. The Kid's menu was small but adequate. Disappointed in the seafood presented. Looking for a more wholesome flavor rather than the sauce that overpowered the seafood. Great wine menu and fun cocktails. Overpriced but paid for it in view and atmosphere.

Nice romantic place for dinner with great view of Roche Harbor.
A NW Treasure!
Historic, fine food, great service. McMillan's is a NW treasure. There is no finer view in the world where you can dine on fine food and enjoy a conversation. The service is outstanding and the menu selections are always wonderful. The prime rib is ALL WORLD!. Enjoy!
Prepare for a Perfect Evening
An island favorite for special occasions. The menu is exceptionally rich in selections and the food is always brilliantly prepared. Great wines and drinks at reasonable prices- especially martinis. Service is unparalleled and always brilliant. A quiet ambience and scenic harbor overview completes the dining experience.
Had the Maytag salad and another recommendation their "Prime Rib"! Do to the hour we arrived the Rib was more Medium Well then Medium rare. Our server replaced it with a rib steak no questions asked. Overall dinner was great and the service even better. McMillin's Dining Room is a must stop in Roche Harbor for dining.
Ok, so mind you, apparently we were there on the 2nd night of the new menu. TERRIBLE NEW MENU! The service staff we knew personally were awesome and the others were soso. The food we ate was delicious but so small it wasn't like eating dinner. The new menu stinks. Mega tiny portions, lack of clarity of what is an appetizer portion and what is a main dish portion, the pricing structure is unacceptably bad. I had the buttermilk fried chicken. I asked even and was told it was dinner. I received two tiny fillets of white meat chicken. Not the big fillets you see in normal restaurants, the delicious actual fillet piece inside a breast. I weight food regularly. They couldn't have been more than 2 ounces. The sides aren't shareable as stated, they are what a normal side dish would be only you pay way too much for them and they are alacart so you don't realize how ripped off you are when you are ordering them. Slightly large potato and perfectly portioned for one broccolini. We had to ask for bread. The salads were unbelievably small for the price. The dessert, pear apple tart was all crust hardly any apple or pear. The server was sweet just slightly inattentive. I am sure that is because a person at our table repeatedly was giving negative feedback that wasn't welcomed. I am sure the menu will work here in the summer as RH has a captive audience and they will pay whatever.
McMillan's - Terrific Dinner
Our waiter was exceptional, and so was the food. We all had something different. The Delmonico steak was incredible (and enough for two). Save room for the creme brulee or the chocolate sundae cake - desserts are generous enough to share. Their small plate menu let us add some extras. We've eaten there twice now. In the summer the view over the harbor is gorgeous, but even on a winter night the lit-up harbor makes for a nice sight.
Can't beat the view.
Or the quality, presentation or service. A VERY special place for that special occasion.
Great service exceptional food
The oysters were so fresh with a salty brine of the sea still intact. The halibut was cooked to perfection! All in all a great and memorable experience. The wait staff was outstanding.

Great Food but service level was horrible. Our server was very impersonal.
Everything was perfect!
From the time we walked through the door, the staff was attentive, friendly and accommodating. From the hostess to our bus person and waiter, we were cared for without being hovered over. We love the concept of the small plate menu, which was a nice size entrée and side, so paired with a nice salad or appetizer left room for a wonderful shared dessert! Our window table took advantage of the view and we were also able to see the retiring of colors at sunset. A very special treat for sure! We will go back as soon as we are able!
Roche Harbor Eats
The restaurant is in a great location but the quality of the food and service left a lot to be desired. Little and not flavorful crab in dinner salad (with shells mixed in), server was rude and not timely. Value for $ paid was poor. The berry cobbler was very good, however. Eat down stairs at the bar and grill for a better meal, service, environment and value.
Excellent food, service and view
I had the prime rib and my wife had the seafood special. Both were outstanding. The prime rib is just as good as the write-ups and reviews. One of the best I have had in this country. Our waitress was especially helpful. Will definitely go back on our next trip to Friday Harbor
old school gem
Sometimes no change is good. McMillans still has old school crab dip, the freshest fish, great beef cuts all prepared consistently well. I appreciate the smaller serving, smaller price entries.
Great Birthday Dinner
The McMillan House has always been our go to special dinner when we stay at Roche Harbor. This was a romantic birthday dinner occasion for this visit The special Halibut plate was wonderful and of course the roast beef is a destination plate This dining experience was wonderful as expected.
An excellent place to have dinner.
You absolutely have to have the prime rib! Make sure it's medium!!
pleasant old-style restaurant
We had the prime rib for dinner near sunset. The flag-lowering ceremony was an extra benefit but the food and the service were king here. First time we've been there and we were not disappointed. We will be back.
Trip Home Dinner
We usually make Roche our final stop on our way home from cruising and make McMillin's our last special dinner out. Their light plates are great. You are able to have an appetizer and dessert and are able to enjoy them all. Service is always great and you can't beat the view.
The food was absolutely 5 star! There was nothing left on any of our plates and that was because it was REALLY REALLY good! We truly have not had this quality of a dinner at a restaurant in years. I highly recommend McMillin's.
McMillans is extraordinary
Chef Bill Shaw and his amazing team deliver an amazing experience every time. The ambiance and view are out of this world. The menu keeps several delectable classics and is always adapting and improving with our going 'over the top' with unnecessarily complex combinations. Even though the seasonal nature of the resort require staffing up in the summer, they always find great servers and other dining room staff and train them in the level of service McMillan's is known for. We have enjoyed this restaurant each and every time we go to Roche Harbor. It's the gold standard in the San Juan Islands.
Great dinner in Roche Harbor.
Food was fantastic and they offer smaller entrees so great way to sample several choices.
I was dining with my family, all adults, and the 6 of us had a most wonderful experience. I order prime rib from time to time at places that look like they specialize in it, but, I have to admit that I think this was the best prime rib I've ever had. My family also thought the Halibut and the sole was good, but, the rack of lamb and the prime rib was amazing. I also was impressed that I was able to order a wonderful bottle of Petit Syrah from Russian River for a very reasonable price. It was so good we had two and the waiter found a white wine that appealed to others in our group. Overall, I think this was the best dining experience we had in our two weeks in the San Juan Islands.
Exceptional meals all around!
We were so impressed by the quality of the food at McMillan's. Often at resorts it seems that the food is fine, but nothing special, since they know they have a captive audience. However, at McMillan's, ALL of the menu items that we ordered were exceptional!! They state on the menu that their portion sizes are smaller & that you might want to order 2 entrees, but we were all perfectly satisfied with a starter or salad & a single entree. Their portion sizes are healthy portions--something that we as Americans do not typically encounter in our restaurants.
Another excellent meal!
Our party of 4 arrived early but seated right away at a window table. The menu has changed to "small plate" by default since our last visit, but the "large plate" menu is available on request. Cocktails were done as requested. Even hand stuffed Bleu Cheese olives for the Martini drinker. The Ahi Duo (sashimi) was perfect size for the 3 fish eaters in our group. Entrees ranged from a huge Burger for my wife, to Prime Rib and halibut for our visiting family, to my Salmon. Everyone was very satisfied by the end. The view of the action in the marina kept us entertained between the prompt and friendly service.
A special place for a special occasion.
McMillins provides a fine dining experience with a special ambiance. The fact that one can arrive by boat adds a special touch for special occasions...in our case a 27th wedding anniversary. And, the on-line reservation system worked flawlessly. Of course, spectacular weather was the frosting on the cake.
We dine here often and the food is top notch and always consistent! Service is the best! The view is amazing!
We love this place and have returned many times.
We were hosting an out-of-town friend and were sure that McMillan's would impress - as usual, we were not disappointed. The ambiance, food, service, view and most of all friendliness of the staff are all what we enjoy the most. We will return again and again.
Good But Over Priced
We have been there a few times and the food is always good but it seems to be a bit over priced as of late.
Noisy and Rude service
We had a reservation and asked for a window seat. They said there wasn't any left and then proceeded to give a window seat to the next couple behind us. It was too loud to even hear that waiter so we walked out. This place is in a great location, but the service was rude and inconsiderate.
This restaurant is great.. It's scenic view of the beautiful marina at Roche harbor is incredible! The food is artfully prepared and delicious with many choices for a variety of desires..

We chose this restaurant to celebrate our 30th anniversary because we were staying nearby. The service was excruciatingly slow. Food was good, but not incredible. We won't be returning.
As always the food here is excellent. We've been coming back for many years and seeking the superbly cooked beef. How lovely it is to KNOW in advance that the standards will be high and the food up to expectations. The staff at the entire resort of Roche Harbor are exceptionally upbeat, polite, cheerful and helpful. Thank you!
Great Father's Day Treat!
We made reservations well in advance because of the Father's Day holiday. We were given a window seat overlooking the sound with sunset views. The menu was a bit pricey but had creative offerings of drinks and entrees. Service was congenial and we all enjoyed!
A lovely evening to celebrate our anniversary and my wife's birthday. Service was excellent, the server had a good sense of humor, the food was delicious, and the view was spectacular. Well done!
Fantastic food, lousy service
The food was exquisite. Everything we ordered was made with fresh ingredients and prepared perfectly. The service unfortunately didn't match the quality of the food. After we were seated we didn't see our waitress for 20 minutes, so I placed our drink order myself with the bartender. When I asked to make a substitution to accommodate a food allergy, I was told that would cost $2. I was hungry and wasn't in the mood to break out in hives, so we paid the $2. While we were still eating the bread, someone came by to ask us if we were done with it (?!). When I tried to take a bite of my food, the person pouring water stuck their arm between my face and my fork to get a water glass.
Parking was a real problem
After walking 1/2 mile down hill to reach the dining room, you must remember you have the same walk after dinner, but uphill! This is not easy for older folks. It's obvious they have their special clientele and if you're not one of them, you get treated accordingly. The food is quite good, but also very expensive for what you get. Seating was quite tight and the floor slants......an old building. In summary, we would not return to the restaurant!
Classy restaurant for all events
McMillin's at Roche Harbor is a classy restaurant. Having said that, you will not feel out of place if you are in a tux or evening gown, or in jeans and a shirt. Overlooking Roche Harbor with scenic sunset views as well, the menu is a bit limited. However, everything on it is prepared to perfection. The wine list is extensive. I would recommend McMillins Dining Room for special occasions as well as for just a nice evening out.
We had really loved our dinner here several years ago but it really didn't measure up this time. Service was very good but the food was overall disappointing. The menu consists of tapas, soup, salads, and small plates. The bisque was blah, the crab stuffed prawns were pretty decent and the beef was dry. If you're going to serve 4 oz steak, don't overcook it! The chocolate ganache dessert with ice cream was very good, though. The piano player was also very enjoyable, adding to the wonderful ambience. I'm sure we will try it again sometime if we stay at Roche Harbor.
We have dined here at least 3 times a year for past 15 years. Change to bistro style and new small plate menu was extremely disappointing. Food was literally dropped at table and was cold. Waitress never came back to check on how it was or ask if we would like another glass of wine, which we would have had, She did come at the end and say "want the bill UH Hu?". would not return again and many visiting boaters have commented similarly. Too bad used to be great!
The stuffed prawns with crab were wonderful! Matched with the view, good friends and great service. A memorable evening.
