Matteo's Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
Service Spotty; Old Time Italian
Not the place to go to for cutting edge cuisine. But that's OK. We just wanted to get together with friends for a quiet dinner. The food was what we expected. Not great, but solid, dependable Italian fare. We were surprised however by momentary lapses in service that wouldn't put Matteo's at the top of our list next time. One member of our party specifically asked for dressing on the side for a salad, and the salad came out mixed. When the customer asked for it to be remedied, there was an argument that ensued (within eyeshot of our table) among the kitchen and servers. Then a cocktail was brought out that contained the wrong spirit. The waiter, instead of instantly taking care of it, looked at his order pad, defended himself by saying he told the bar the right thing and that he had to check with the bartender before taking this drink away and replacing it with the right thing. This left bad feelings with us. He should have taken the drink away immediately and had the bar make a new one. He was more concerned about being blamed. Sorry bro. Not our problem. Make it right. He did, eventually, but it wasn't his priority.

Incredibly disappointing. Not what it used to be. Mediocre food and service. Disappointing wine selection. Boring atmosphere. We'll unfortunately never go back.
Top Marks Again
I am sure you have experienced finding a great restaurant that you always know you can go to for a great evening and then one day you go there and the manager you knew so well was no longer there and your heart sinks as you wonder if the place will be the same? Well that happened to us and any concerns were quickly removed as the new manager stepped up to the plate and the experience was as great as ever. If anything the new manager pushes out the boat to make sure that every guest gets the best experience they can provide. So full marks to Matteos - already looking forward to dining there again next week.

Our party was split between steaks and pastas, but everyone agreed that all the food was delicious. Very quiet and somewhat formal. There was a guy playing guitar quietly at the bar, and he was fantastic as well

Great restaurant. One of our favorites
Waste of time, money and calories
Terrible service and below average food for a restaurant that has been well known for far too many years
Always excellent !
We have been going to Matteo's well over 10 years, and have never been disappointed. They have their menu and recipes perfected. Everyone we go with gushes about the service and outstanding cuisine. Highly recommended !!!!

This place is great! Service can be here or there. The first time we went it was just okay but the second visit the service was great! Very good eggplant parmesan and the best dessert that I dream about. I'm not sure what it's called but it's a ball of chocolate ice cream covered in chocolate chips. Amazing!
I Love Matteo's
We went with two other couples for dinner. They sat us as requested at a small round table. The amazing thing is that you can hear each other talk because noise level is low. Our waiter was charming and attentive. The food as usual was outstanding. I had artichoke salad and eggplant parmigiana both of which I highly recommend. Matteo's is one of our favorite restaurants. Treat yourself.
Loved our dinner there.
Very good Italian restaurant. Excellent menu, first-rate service. Could not have been more pleasant.
Good service, food outstanding
Nice surroundings and you can have conversation. Accomodating wait staff.
The service was very slow and the food adequate
I was surprise by how quiet the restaurant was and that the service was almost nonexistent. The food was just okay - but for the cost should have been much better - The order was received wrong as well - not planning to revisit
Perfect New Year's Eve Dinner
We dined at Matteo's following a movie on New Year's Eve. We wanted to stay in the neighborhood and not have a long drive home. Our dining experience was perfect, our waiter better than perfect and the food was delicious. We both had the rack of lamb special. It was outstanding as were our salads. Although it was a busy night for dining out we never felt rushed by our waiter. We also enjoyed the quiet ambiance of Matteo's and preferred it to a high energy, noisy environment. We will definitely dine here again and would highly recommend this restaurant to others.
Return to Matteos
This was our "regular" stop many years ago; hadn't been here for over 15 years. The staff was very pleasant and the food was outstanding. Seafood, veal and pasta in abundance. Only negative was the service; a bit weak considering the restaurant was not packed. Possible the waiter was assigned too many parties. We'll try it again in the future.
New Year's Eve 2016
Great meal on a difficult holiday. Four of us seniors dined before going to a movie. Food and service were superb and timing was perfect. Rack of lambs were great as was Rib Eye Prime. Soups and salads were presented beautifully and very tasty. A wonderful evening.

Not what it used to be. This was our fifth Christmas eve in a row at Matteo's. There will not be a sixth. Everything was harder than it needed to be. Christmas Eve dinner. Out waiter was spread too thin and consequently not as attentive as he could have been. When he was able to give us his attention we felt rushed. We were thinking that if we dont get everything out now we might not see him again until Christmas. Formerly the restaurant was much more accommodating as far as making something simple for the kids. That was an ordeal. In the end no one really enjoyed their meal, or even the bread, which now comes coated in pesto. Could you please just allow your customers to decide how much pesto they do or do not want on their bread? I didnt think so. Anyway, we wont be back. Here's hiw the reservation and checkin went: Booked on Open table. On December 23rd, I received an email via open table that I need to contact the restaurant to confirm my reservation as Matteo's was unable to reach me. Fascinating, since clearly I was reachable via email. I checked my account and confirmed that my cell phone was correct. Not sure what the efforts to reach me actually were. So, I call the restaurant to confirm. After an unusually long wait, they were finally able to find and confirm my reservation. We arrived for dinner a few minutes early. I told the hostess my name and so began that now familiar uncomfortable wait as I watched her pore through the reservations, searching fruitlessly for my name. My wife and I exchanged a nervous glance. Finally, again, they found my name. I should add that my name is as generic and vanilla as you can get.

Food and atmosphere as always excellent. Roasted goose exceptional; winter truffle pasta delicious. Rocky start to our service probably result of influx of Christmas Eve diners. All worked out in the end.

It's always quiet in there so we can hear each other talk, the food is great and the portions are normal size so you don't over eat and leave bloated. It's a great staple restaurant.

Great place! The chef came out to say hello...he was very charming. The food was amazing. I had the filet, it was cook to perfection. My sister had the lamb also amazing. The portions were perfect. You can not leave without having dessert. Definitely going to make it on my top 5 best place to dine. Must try!!!
We were expecting more at this long established restaurant. We were taken back in time with their 50s style decor and the Frank Sinatra recorded music. The waiter was very nice and attentive. However the food was disappointing. The chicken breast was served pink and after cooking it more it was not tender as it should have been. There was no flavor in any part of the meal.

Was in LA and decided to go to Mateo's. Used to go there regularly in the 80s and THIS was once THE PLACE let me tell you. Back in the day, it was packed and had a great old school vibe going on. This pace WAS old world Italian at its best. Sadly it has passed its prime. Don't get me wrong, it was good, but it was NOT the hot spot it once was. For those of you that know the place, yes the Train is still there, but they were not running it. Today, it attempts to be an upscale place, but with a confused vibe. Not many people were there the night we went (could have been because it was the day before thanksgiving, not sure). Food was good, taste, quality and quantity, although I thought it was a bit on the pricey side for what we got. Would I go back - YES, but sadly not to bring back the memories of what Mateo's once was.
Still lovely but now too expensive.
I regret that, though I've enjoyed Matteo's for years, and think their food is superb they have now priced themselves out of even my affluent budget. I dined with a friend. We each had a glass of wine, an entree with 1 coffee and no dessert. Most entrees come only with the meat or fish and each "side dish" like potatoes, vegetable etc. is extra. However both of us had the special "Salmon" which had servings of both. With the tip our bill was $177.00. This is no longer a cherished neighborhood restaurant but very high end for only special occasions, alas.
Classic Italian in Westwood. Go for the ambience.
Classic old line Italian in West LA area. Food was excellent. Service very good. If you want a "Sinatra" experience, this is it. Had a great time.
I always feel comfortable taking friends here as I know that Fabrice the manager will make everyone special - and that was one of the first things our friends commented on as they started their pre- dinner drinks. The service and food were impeccable and we were the last but one table to leave. Another great evening. On Tuesdays and Wednesday's they have their Bovine night which is incredible value. So much so that we are heading back there tonight!

Appetizer was solid, but the rest of the meal was nothing better than average. Not a cheap place, so...we expected a much better than average meal. The past was way over-cooked. Not acceptable, especially from a true old-school Italian restaurant. Service left much to be desired. We will not be returning to this restaurant. Don't waste your time with this place. Many better Italian restaurants in LA.
Relaxed and delicious dining
Great dining for a girlfriends' night out--delicious food, quiet atmosphere, not rushed, courteous and efficient service.
A blast from the past
The menu was classic with a twist. Gracious staff. Good food, but expensive compared to other fine Italian restaurants. We both had a cocktail and they were awful. Stick with the wine very good.
I started going to this establishment 30 years ago. Great place with great food and service. After my experience this weekend, i would never go back here again. The food was dreadful and the service was worse than could be imagined. The waiter could speak very little English which would be ok if he delivered our orders correctly. Messed up everything The Valet attendant looked like he was just released from LA County jail. Thank God Matty and Mike have passed on and will not be able to witness what someone else has destroyed.
a gift that just keeps giving
i've written at least a dozen reviews of my matteo dining experiences and it hardly ever varies in the past year or so - surprisingly excellent food coupled with outstanding service (if you're fortunate enough to be handled by jose). can't go wrong. go prove it to yourself.
FOR THE COST FACTOR......POOR SERVICE
The restaurant was 70% empty nevertheless it took a very very long time to get our order delivered. 2. Our waiter, although most cordial and amicable spoke little English.. Difficult for him to explain some of the menus offerings. I asked him what sides came with my veal piccata ( excellent by the way) he shared that brocollini and cauliflower .. When it arrived .. There were no vegetables at all .. Just the piccata ! When I asked him where the vegetables were... He seemed confused ! 3. The restaurant ventilation was poor.. Several times I needed to ask to crank up the AC.. They did and then it clicked off again. Most uncomfortable due to the heat. For the various mishaps , it would have been nice for the management to comp the two desserts that our party of four ordered... Not done ! This is a moderately priced eatery.. The service was disappointing . Not sure if it was due to the kitchen and or the waiter . Sadly, after so many years , we shall not be returning .

when we gave our name to the host we were told there was no reservation but that we could be seated right away. And we were. Not a complaint, just find this interesting. Good dinning experience.

Terrific chopped salad. Entrees, pasta mediocre. Love the ambiance.
Matteo's is a gem! It still has the old world "Hollywood" (thank God!). The food is top notch. The marinara sauce with meat was outstanding. And the gluten free pasta was fantastic. The service was great. The waiter was attentive and smart. He understood my special dietary needs and made sure the kitchen was following the order properly. If in Westwood, GO GO GO!
A fine spot to dine.
Matteo's has been up and down during the 40 years we've lived in the neighborhood, and it's definitely back up. The menu is an excellent mix of standard dishes and more "creative" ones. I had a wonderful branzino, and others had butternut squash ravioli--both dishes were specials. And for dessert some cannoli, another special urged by Jose, our very nice and knowledgeable waiter. I can't over-praise the atmosphere, where it's actually quiet enough to be able to have non-yelling conversations--what a welcome relief in L.A.
Matteo's is a throwback to olden days when ambiance, service, food and tradition were important; after a visit here, they still are.
A shadow of its former self.
Matteo was a terrific spot for many years. But the menu has changed and the quality of the food has seriously deteriorated - which is particularly problematic considering the high prices. No wonder it's usually 3/4 empty. I've gone back several times over the past couple of years, trying different dishes and hoping for the best but it's always disappointing. The service is excellent but what they're serving is inadequate. What a shame.
still got game
veteran restaurants like matteo's are a blessing. the food and service is consistently good, the atmosphere is relaxing, no yelling is required, it's comfortable. it's a sane and satisfactory place to enjoy a good meal, away from the frenetic scene that typifies the trendoid nature of so many LA eateries, where a dinner with friends is a pleasure, not battlefield warfare.
Really good Italian
We went here for the first time this week. The menu had all the typical Italian items as well as some unique stuff like salad with peaches and goat cheese. The food was really good. Veal, seafood, pasta, all were v. ery well prepared. Service was not so good. it was not crowded and the waitress was often missing in action.
MATTEO'S HAS IT ALL
Matteo's is a comfortable, relaxing setting, with accommodating servers and bar service. We usually go following the theater, talk quietly, slowly check-out the menu and, in general, enjoy the next couple of hours. The server was especially charming and knowledgeable this time, explaining several dishes so we could be better informed. Perfect recommendations. Dessert was fabulous. You were out of Dragon Fruit but we'll try that next time. Thank you...we always enjoy ourselves. We've also referred others to Matteo's, including having provided my son with a Gift Certificate.
