Amazing service! Fabulous food! Ralph was great!
All restaurants should strive to be like this!
My husband and I went to Las Canarias for our anniversary. I did note on my reservation that we were celebrating our anniversary. We were congratulated when we walked into the restaurant. Brahim was our waiter. He was exceptional! He was personable, knew the dishes, and treated us to a bottle of champagne. The food was delicious. Everything was perfect. Loved this place! Go now!!

Took 6 clients out for a nice dinner. We had a great time and everything was excellent. The dining room was fairly empty so we lucked out and had basically private dining. The service level was out of this world! Don't hesitate to dine here.
The butternut squash soup was delicious and the ambience was nice. Beautiful space. However, the wine pairings were quite lacking and everyone received the same wine per course. It was more like a course tasting. We were disappointed. I probably will not go again.
Great meal and service

special dinner on riverwalk
This restaurant was recommended and it was more than expected. Wait staff was very attentive. Nice selections on the menu, something for everyone. Very nice fine dining.

We had breakfast 2 mornings in a row. The service and quality are exceptional and the price was in par with the rest of the river walk. We were not staying at this hotel. Our hotel had a good breakfast buffet but no omelets. I found this one online, it had great reviews and the price was only $3 more than ours and had omelets. However, when we arrived, the menu had the buffet $6 more and we can't eat $44 worth of breakfast. So, we decided to split the omelet and get oatmeal (only $5 a HUGE bargain) and some fruit. We had so much food, it was delicious and we enjoyed Hector so much. We just had to go back again. I understand they validate their valet parking. Do yourself a favor and go here.
Romantic Gem on Riverwalk, San Antonio.
This was a last minute Valentine's Day find selected to celebrate both V-Day and our anniversary. It was fabulous, from the friendly greeting to the end. We enjoyed quiet dining where we could actually hear and enjoy the acoustic guitar as well as our conversation. The meal, a fixed menu for this special evening, was delightful, tasty and filling. The wine menu had plenty of choices, and our server knowledgeable. Our chef visited our table (a surprise) and was friendly, engaging, and quick to answer our questions about the evenings offerings...a personal touch that was greatly appreciated. We'd never been here before...it's on our list as a repeat. Yes, a little expensive, but oh so worth it.
Beautiful place right on the river walk, but I felt it was a little overpriced. The food was very good, but not commensurate with the cost.

Great Food / Unattentive Service
Live in San Antonio and made a reservation to spend a quiet and romantic evening with my wife. Drove downtown to the restaurant which is housed in the magnificent Omni La Mansion on the Riverwalk. Once downtown, it took us 40 minutes just to get to the hotel. Traffic was bumper to bumper and not moving. It was a good thing we allowed an extra hour to get there. After fighting traffic and trying to make the impossible turn through traffic into the property, we pulled up at the entrance to the hotel to valet park the car with about 5 minutes to spare. We were then turned away for parking and told that parking was for hotel guests only, not restaurant guests. The valet attendant pointed us to a city garage located across the street with a mile long backup to enter the garage (we figured out that the traffic trying to enter the garage was the main reason for the huge back up). We contemplated just leaving. We again had to fight traffic to enter the garage and finally made it to the restaurant 1/2 hour late. We were promptly seated and promised excellent service. After ordering, the server brought our two appetizers - one of which was not what was ordered. Then the server finally delivered the appetizer - to the wrong table. The quality of the food was very good, but not once did anyone refill our water glasses when empty nor ask if we wanted another drink (we had to flag someone down each time). We also had to flag someone down for additional bread. However, the check came promptly. At over $200 for a dinner for 2, the service should have been impeccable. You would not expect this level of service at a top rated restaurant.
Don't go on a holiday
My wife and I went out the day before Valentines day. We arrived there twenty minutes early, were told they ran out of valet parking, 40 minutes later we were able to park across the street and walk over. We sat down to a very nice atmosphere, even with a quiet band playing. The hostess and waiters were always very polite and profession. At first they were prompt, but as soon as we asked to see their 'regular' menu instead of their absurdly priced Valentines day menu, service was hard to come by. The Smoked Filet Mignon is not for your average steak lover, it wasn't lightly smoked, they found a cow that smoked a few packs a day and encouraged his bad habit slaughter then smoked him some more. The bacon wrapped pork on the other hand, was delicious and paired very well.

Not what it used to be
We used to love Las Canarias for its ambience, Latin American-style food, great service and wonderful location on the Riverwalk. But something has happened. The ambience is still great but the food is no longer world class and the service has become amateurish and terribly slow. One senses there has been a change in management, although I do no know this to be the case. Having eaten much in Europe we're accustomed to drawn-out dining, but here in the US, where we've lived for thirty years, we expect a four-course fixed-price dinner to take less than 2 hours and twenty minutes. I can no longer recommend Las Canarias.
Valentine's Weekend Dinner
When making the reservation it was not mentioned the restaurant had a "fixed menu" for that evening at $85.00 per person without drinks. Three of us ordered the filet and it was prepared not per our orders, over cooked, and quite frankly when they took them back and returned 15 minutes later the second steaks had no taste to them what so ever. We stated our concern and other than the waiter no one, Manager, came to our table to discuss or offer any resolution for our dissatisfaction. The only saving thing about our 3 hour meal was the great waiter who was very good, kind, and attentive to our needs. We will never go back to this restaurant.
They went all out! It was my fathers b-day and they went and asked the bar singer to come and sing La Mananitas and play the guitar. We didn't even expect or ask for it.

PARA LOS PAJAROS
The setting is nice, either quiet dining room or the noisier balcony overlooking the river. The food was definitely mediocre at best. I would not recommend this restaurant to a foodie.

Excellent food and wine pairing menu. Our best meal in San Antonio.
Try it, you'll like it.
Las Canarias is not what I'd call a "scene;" it is a lovely, quiet riverwalk gem that unfortunately gets overlooked because it isn't new or stylistically cutting-edge. The dining room is somewhat formal but the staff is friendly and efficient, and the overall feel is comfortable and pleasant. The food has always been good, and my wife and I like the refreshing new twists that the chef has introduced to a fairly straight-forward menu. We have been occasional diners here for years, and expect to keep coming back because we always leave Las Canarias feeling good about the evening.
Should be higher in ratings
Ate twice (lunch and dinner) at Las Canarias and found the food to be excellent both times. One of the online restaurant ratings services has them in the top 20 for San Antonio, but they are clearly better than some of the ones that currently are higher in that list, and I am speaking from experience. Relatively expensive, but worth it.
Great romantic spot
This is probably one of the best restaurant in SA... the atmosphere was quiet and romantic and the food was great. We had a nice table overlooking the riverwalk and the staff was kind and attentive to all our request. I would certainly recommend this restaurant if you're trying to have a romantic dinner with your significant other.
I expected a more upscale ambiance and a greater variety of dishes as I've experienced at other brunches we've been to at other hotels. What we got was a breakfast buffet full of people in shorts, tee shirts, and jogging suits. The service was not that great. I had a reservation for 11am and we had to wait 20 minutes for a table to be setup.
Las Canarias has been a San Antonio institution for many years. They haven't lost their touch. The paella was delicious and well-stocked with shrimp and mussels. The grilled shallots were perfect. Service was attentive but not intrusive. A very nice meal!
Having eaten at fine restaurants across the country, Europe, South America and the Caribbean, Las Canarias was a true delight. Found it on Open Table, took a chance, and we were beyond delighted. Menu, wine and drink list, food, preparation, service and ambience are first-rate. Visitors to San Antonio looking for a sophisticated and appropriately-priced, excellent dining experience should reserve a table at Las Canarias. Really!

Food was average, only buffet, and I was stuck on a table in between two service tables so it was noisy and disruptive (and the host said he was waiting to seat me because they wanted to find me a good table!). The room is in real need of a renovation, dark, damp and felt like I was in a basement. I recommend going somewhere else!
Due to it being Christmas Day, they sort of took advantage of their customers. $72 per person for a Buffet was in my opinion excessive. Food was good, but with a bottle of $45 (marked up to $150) champagne, almost $400 for a buffet dinner for 2 stunned me.
Amazing Christmas Brunch!
We made reservations to attend brunch at 1pm on Christmas Day because the kids were out of town. The food selection was amazing, hot and always quickly replaced. There was something there for everyone. All of the meats, sides, vegetables and salads were fresh. Highly recommend this place for brunch! The Bloody Mary's were the perfect addition to our great meal.
We sat on the Riverwalk- very nice Monday night they has space! The food was fair. It's a little expected. Also- the servers outside seemed overwhelmed but the inside staff was just sitting around. It's expensive for the value but the location is lovely.

It's Almost Back!
We had not visited for Sunday brunch in a few years and this visit was better. The service was very friendly and prompt without being obtrusive. The bottomless mimosas that had gone away for a while are back, and ours were kept full. The disappointment for us was the attention to detail on the buffet. The French toast, sausage and bacon were cold because the tray heaters had run out of fuel. I let the manager know and he genuinely appreciated me telling him, but instead of replacing the cold food(he said he would refresh the items) the heaters were just re-lit under the cold food. The labels in from of the food deserve new tags that are more readable as the dry erase tags have seen better days. My wife asked the server at the carving station what the meat was and he surprisingly did not know it was prime rib and fortunately that tag was readable. There is a good assortment of food and there is now a fresh made bananas foster station that is a welcome addition and had a knowledgable and pleasant server. We would still go back for brunch if we staying downtown on a Saturday night, but would not make a special trip down jut for brunch. The price is a little high and probably not a great value if you are not drinking mimosas, unless the food quality goes up a bit and the attention to detail on the food freshness and temperature goes up a lot. Probably the best brunch in San Antonio and worth at least one visit if you are downtown on a Sunday.
We were staying in the La Mansion Del Rio hotel for my wife's birthday and dined at Las Canarias that evening. The food was fantastic, the setting was totally romantic, and the service was over-the-top. I asked the waiter for a wine suggestion and he provided a real winner. Couldn't have asked for a better setting and experience. Highly recommend it.
I have been dining at this restaurant annually for close to two decades. It never disappointed in past but this time all flavors were muted and musty like old spices used. The presentations and combinations seem years behind some of the more vibrant local competition. Even dessert was disappointing. The restaurant was not as filled as would be expected n this busy week so I suspect many others would share my views.....time to up date, modernize and adopt more modern cutting edge flavors.
