Chef Michael Psilakis and partner Donatella Arpaia have moved their rustic Greek gem, Kefi, to a larger space at 505 Columbus Avenue. The new, 200-seat interior evokes the feeling of a palatial Greek hideaway broken up into several smaller dining rooms to keep Kefi’s intimate appeal.
The menu of favorites straight from Psilakis’ childhood will remain the same with some new additions. Signature dishes like Baccala, crispy-fried cod with garlic potatoes and tomato, Grilled Octopus with bean salad, and Hilopita, baked pasta with rabbit ragout and béchamel are still on offer. Additions include Grilled Sardines with chopped “Greek Salad” and garlic sauce, Macaronia Spestofai, tubular pasta with Greek sausage, peppers, onions, tomato and feta and an entirely new section of Greek Sandwiches featuring house-made sausages and pork and lamb gyro.

Great food with a caveat
The food and service was exceptional. However, the noise level on the ground floor is beyond exuberant! The good news is that there are two dining rooms downstairs that are far less noisy and more intimate.

Great Greek food
It was my first time at kefi . The food was very good and also generous with big plates . The only thing is that our server was a bit " rushy " , he tried few times to take away our plates , while still eating .. And this makes you a little uncomfortable . But the rest was ok. Not very noisy , a nice place to havedinner with friends or family or a date .
Consistently Excellent Food
We have had a number of occasions over several years to dine at Kefi when visiting family on the Upper West Side. It never disappoints. Have had roasted lamb, sea bass, lamb shanks and shrimp with orzo. All delicious. The one thing I never fail to order is the octopus appetizer with a garbanzo bean salad. An absolute favorite. Prices at Kefi are reasonable, given the quality of the cuisine.

yaya's meatballs were very hearty and flavorful. the yogurt sauce was a nice and refreshing complement to the hefty and spice-filled meat. the octopus was good, too. in comparison with taverna kyclades, this is less tender, but still has the char and seafood flavor. Pasta with braised rabbit surprised me. It was so good. Branzino was a little salty Overall favorite was the dumpling with merguez!!! couldn't get enough of that
good, not great
the apps were delicious. the octopus salad was tasty and tender and the greek sausage was delicious. i was a little disappointed in my entree. i had the lamb burger. it was so salty that it hurt. the chips that accompanied the burger were quite good and less salty than the burger. the service was attentive and the waiter did make a good wine suggestion.

Shrimp was fishy. Chicken came cold. Out of many items for a 8:00 reservation. Disappointed overall. Have had better experience in past
I love Kefi and was a little disappointed with my last meal here. One of us got there early and the other was late so we just ate at the bar. Normally this works out great. However, the bartender seemed very spacey. He was very nice but it took a while to get his attention (it's not a very big bar). He messed up our order. We asked several times what one of the dishes was because we hadn't ordered it. He explained what it was and left it there. We eventually got his attention again, we needed to ask where one of the dishes we did order was, and he seemed surprised when we again told him we had not ordered it. He then took it away. It was just a weird interaction. It also took a while to order another round of drinks and get the check. The Souvlaki was a little over cooked and chewy but the sheepsmilk dumplings were great. I'm going to chock this up to an off day and hope it will be back to greats across the board next time.

They took my favorite pork dish off the menu, increased price of special and our server was almost impossible to locate .
Kefi's menu offering is not what one would identify as "traditional" Greek food. I'd like to call it Nouveau Greek because your best bets are the items in the Mezze section - somewhere between Tapas and a real main course sized plate. Order a few and share and enjoy the taste of what the chef has brought to Greek cuisine. The Branzino and sheep's milk raviolis on the main course section are good choices. Wines appear overpriced for labels and wine regions that are not typically within the average diner's vocabulary and the setting does not quite lend itself to blowing one's budget on the more pricey wines. The wait staff was friendly and courteous.
Kefi does a great job again!
Consistently excellent w/ a friendly, capable staff
The food was fresh and delicious, as usual, but the service was just terrible! The waitress was totally inattentive, and several times we resorted to waving our arms in the air, trying to attract her - anybody's - attention. Nobody else seemed interested either. Dinner took much longer than necessary because of the service- and it was Monday night - not even crowded! If this were my first time at Kefi, I would never come back.

I've been here a couple of times before, and this time I was disappointed. The food was not quite as good as before and the waiter seem to rush us even though it was fairly empty when we arrived.

Food still great, service needs work. Very condescending experience, wanted to order a special told not to, ordered it anyway, one item not available, said he did is a favor by getting approval for a substitute. Really? Could have monotones it before we ordered. Too bad as the food is great as are the prices.
Solid food everyone would enjoy, with occasional standouts! The dips were fairly standard, salads, chips pretty good - but the meatballs were unexpectedly sublime, and the lamb burger, juicier than need be and cooked just perfectly. Large, comfortable space, friendly waitstaff, very reasonable prices. Can't go wrong, and sometimes you will go wow.
The food was absolutely fabulous as always. EVERYTHING was outstanding from appetizer to dessert. Service could have been better (less than friendly waiter) and the noise level was quite high and annoying. Try to sit at the back away from the bar and Maitre d's desk. The place isn't exactly a design statement, simple and kinda eclectic. Could use a redesign.
Food great Service fair
The consensus was that the food was excellent, but the speed and quality of service was fair. Slow refills on sodas and coffee. We had to track the waiter down a number of times. It was not that crowded that we felt he was just too busy.
Cute, energetic, and great food!
I liked the casual, vibrant, down-to-earth ambiance. Food was very refreshing and flavorful. My friend and I shared cypriot salad, and I got tubular pasta for myself. I liked both dishes, especially the salad. Service was efficient. I'd definitely come back.
Better food then service
A friend of mine highly recommended this restaurant. I went with another friend and ordered what my friend raved about which was the grilled octopus and bean salad and the kale salad with feta, watermelon and smoked almonds. We ordered sangria and had to remind the waiter to bring it ten minutes later. When we placed our order he seemed very impatient and snappy with us. My kale salad was missing the smoked almonds. I asked him for them and he brought me some strange slivered almonds without an apology or any courtesy. I had to once again ask for the correct "smoked" almonds (as they were supposed to be part of the salad). He never checked on us and didn't ask if we wanted another sangria until we were almost finished with the dinner. The food and the sangria were fabulous! The octopus was tender and delicious and the kale salad was amazing (better when I got my almonds). I would definitely go back and hopefully get better service next time.
i have been to kefi several times and have always enjoyed it. this time, while still liking it, i was less than thrilled and it had nothing to do with the food. i arrived at the restaurant 10 minutes early and asked to be seated at my table. i was told that i could wait at the bar for my friend which i did not want to do. btw, it was relatively early so the restaurant was not busy. finally the hostess deigned to allow me to sit at a table. while walking to the table, i noticed several parties of 2 at larger tables generally used for 4's. i had a ton of stuff with me and so i asked if i could please have one of those tables and i was told that they were all reserved. quite frankly, i don't believe that those tables were reserved but whatever. the food was good as it always is. the wait staff usually fabulous was fair. i will still go back to kefi as i like it very much.

Thought the staff was a little less than warm and friendly. But the food is very good. The prefix for dinner is a great deal. The atmosphere is lacking a little.
Romantic and authentic
Took my fiance here for dinner. Great food and ambiance. I grew up in a very Greek family and this tasted just like Yiayia's cooking. Will absolutely come back. Thanks for the great experience, Kefi!
Still great but beware of busy Saturday nights
We waited a bit too long for our entrees. The waiter offered only a half-hearted apology that "You will get your food. It suddenly got very busy but the kitchen is working on it." Busy Saturdays (or any heavily packed evening) the kitchen should be more prepared for so that service isn't affected. Otherwise, food was delicious as always.
Can't go wrong
Came here with a group of 6 for my birthday and we loved everything we ordered. The waiters were patient, came back to check in on us frequently, and recommended a good bottle of wine. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu, really!
We loved Kefi. It was our first time there and it is terrific!
Branzino not filleted properly. Full of bones.
Great food generally, but my branzino wasn't filleted properly. ( I asked the waiter if it is a fillet while ordering, he confirmed it is.) So, don't order the branzino, unless you like to eat fish bones.
Small plate lovers take note
I love small plates, and Kefi offers them in spades. The three of us shared the outstanding meatballs, excellent grilled octopus and tasty but undercooked brussels sprouts. We began with hummus but failed to catch the "Sun Dried Tomato" that described it. Very tasty if you're an SDT fan (I'm not). Our waitress was patient and efficient and steered me to an enjoyable glass of white wine from the admirably Greek-rich selection of wines by the glass. OpenTable's "Energetic" describes the sound level--present but not unpleasant. 4/5 stars overall. Very good value on top of it all, so Kefi definitely merits return trips.

Enjoyable dinner! Place was roomy and quiet which was nice.
Not kid friendly/ terrible service
We used to like Kefi but its quality has dropped dramatically. They try to sit families with kids in the basement, which basically smells like a wet mop, or at the front, which can be cold with the door opening. The service is terrible. We had to ask for everything 3-4 times (even our drinks). A lot of items have disappeared from the menu, like the cod and garlic mash and the green beans and roasted potatoes small dishes. They also did away with the selection of dips dish. You now have to order them individually at a higher price. Kefi is trying to revamp itself as a trendy place for 20 somethings (with boozy brunches etc) but not sure how smart this strategy is in an area with lots of families and kids. Won't be going again any time soon.

Treated very well by staff, upon entrance through departure. I am handicapped and use a rollator walker many of the staff helped enter, held doors and made me feel very comfortable. Not rushed through lunch. Food was exceptional.
Up, up...and away.
Have eaten at Kefi countless times since it opened, and then re-opened. The food continues to be fresh, well-prepared, assertive; respectable portions with vegetarian options. Excellent service. Prices have risen considerably, however. I was startled when I saw the menu. The decor and ambiance, post re-opening, is drab; and nothing has been done to deal with the off-putting din. Due to these two factors, not likely I will frequent Kefi as often as I once did.

truly enjoy the prix-fixe dinner which was also available during Restaurant Week. just wish they could devise a way to muffle the sounds of the conversations; it truly impacts on one's pleasure when you have trouble hearing yourself think and those at your table.
Too long of a wait for an empty room.
We waited too long to get a seat in the empty basement, despite having a reservation. Food was good though.
The back room became the party room!
I have to admit I was skeptical when I was bringing out-of-town guests to one of my favorite uws restaurants and we were led down the staircase into the very back room, to a corner back table in large room with very few diners. We did ask to be moved from one side to the next because it felt more open and we were accommodated. Our reservation was 8pm - we walked past a few tables that would seat everyone in our party? Service started slow but then quickly accelerated into friendly and fast. As the room began to fill we were soon surrounded by energetic diners like us eager for a fun and foodie event, the experience turned 180. The food was excellent! Everyone had fish as a main course and loved. Shared apps and desserts....our guests left happy and ready to return. I guess the moral of the story - if there are tables that would accommodate #persons in a reservation - and these persons SEE these tables - seat them in those -it is a bit weird and uncomfortable to bring them to a near empty room. Our night was saved because it was a late reservation and the room eventually filled up with fun.

Perfect portions. The courses were prompt but not rushed. Only complaint was the downstairs was empty when we arrived and ten minutes after sitting down the hostess sat another couple right next to us.
