Katsuya - L.A. Live Ratings and Reviews
Highly recommend Katsuya. Try the Brussel Spout appetizer. The entrees are generous, the rolls are fresh, the tempura light and crispy, and the salmon was cooked.
There is only One # One at LA Live
What more can you ask for or expect? Food, without question, superior.....attitude of greeters and waitstaff impeccable!! We had a glass of wine at the comfy bar which we finished with dinner at our table then enjoyed great tastes. Every moment at this restaurant a relaxing and enjoyable experience.
Before Show Dining!!
We had dinner here before our show at the Microsoft Theatre. It was super convenient to get there early and have dinner before our show. The place is very energetic, but since we were there early, we were able to enjoy our dinner before it got too loud. We both had the miso-marinated black cod with the crispy brussel sprouts to start our dinner. Both were DELICIOUS!! Think of dinner like tapas though, as most everything is ala carte and they will bring everything to you one at a time versus all at once. Service was good.
fun and tasty food
We had a very friendly waitress. Good presentation was great. Taste also. Price extremely reasonable as well.

Service was SLOW
We have been to Katsuya many times, but the service this time was VERY SLOW. Certainly much of the problem was the kitchen, but apparently our order was picked up by another server and given to his table. We only found this out after we asked why we had been sitting there for almost 45 minutes. The soup was also served at room temperature - TWICE. Orders did not come out together. Overall it was very disappointing as we really love the food. Fortunately we had given ourselves 2 hours before game time and we needed nearly every bit of it. The restaurant is now on our "probation" list. We may try it again, but this should never happen without someone making amends. Instead our server was defensive that we mentioned that the service was slow.
Love love love.
After every sporting game I attend at staples, Katsuya LA Live is a must! Love the drinks, food and ambiance. It's a great place to get together with friends.
This place is always good. More importantly, they took care of us in a pinch! We had a table here but also a table at another spot nearby, as we had two big groups dining last week. This was the night of the Kobe Bryant final game - LA Live was insane. Long story short, our one group was dining here and my group was going to another spot that overbooked and couldn't accomodate our reservation. The girls at the front desk of Katsuya came through HUGE in a pinch and I'd like to think we rewarded them with a $700 dinner tab. The food was incredible as always. The service was great too.. thanks so much!!! We'll be back soon.

The mushroom salad was out of this world delicious if you enjoy the meaty bite of mushrooms . The drinks ( margarita, mojito etc. ) were pricey and weak. But the food over all very tasty and delicious. Service was slow, it took a long time to get food after ordering it. It was noisy and it is dark inside. I paid check by credit and planned on giving a tip cash, the waiter came back and told me that ' there must be a mistake because there was no tip included in the check' I told him that if he had thought about the client leaving cash for his tip. I think it was in poor judgment in his part.
Great food! Excellent service!

Our server was very knowledgeable and attentive.
A little expensive, sushi sampler $32 & 4 (*50c) size Lamb Chops $28 with two drinks & the bill was $109 not including tip & parking

The food was really great. My only complaint is how randomly the food that we ordered came out. The menu is organized with starters and entrées. We both ordered a starter and an entrée. My friends starter came out immediately, then came both entrées, and my starter came out after we were finished with dinner. So that wasn't good.
Underwelming, Not Like the other Katsuya
This is more like the ESPNzone than a Sushi house. Buyer Beware! Servers disappeared for long spells. Orders went missing. If you're looking for a sushi with a date, avoid this place unless its to grab something after the game at Staples.
Our server was attentive even though it was very busy.

Best sushi!! Save it for a special occasion.
Expensive but super worth it for a fun night out. Sushi is second to none and the ambiance is loud but really fun. The service couldn't be better.
Another favorite sushi place
This place almost as good as Nobu or Koi sushi, excellent quality, all tastes fantastic. We will be back and we will try different location as well.
Fabulous food and fun atmosphere!
Katsuya continues to have great food with a fun vibe--both LA Live and Brentwood locations. The food is consistently good and you can always rely on your favorites being just as good as you remember them from your last visit. Personal favorites: Shisito peppers, crispy brussel sprouts, and the creamy rock shrimp appetizer. The cocktails are yummy and unique, and although you'll be tempted to fill up on the amazing appetizers and Sushi, don't miss out on one of their many fabulous entrées--my personal favorite is the dynamite lobster that's served with mushrooms.

I've been a big fan of Katsuya for a long time, but the restaurant quality has definitely mediocre. It's ok for an entry level sushi experience, but not for a true variety. Also, the servers basically dumped all of our dishes at once, obviously to turn the table over as quickly as possible. I don't think we will be going back anytime soon.
Fresh and Creative
While the restaurant had a fresh and creative vibe, a few areas left me unsure how to rate overall. This is a hip, fresh restaurant with great staff and great food options. I was not famished, so I chose the AMAZING brussel sprouts appetizer and a house special roll. The roll was good, but the crab was masked with a smoky cajun sauce that while a lot of flavor; for the $25.00 price tag I could have eaten a bown of rice with Cajun sauce and it would have tasted the same. Shame on me for not being smarter about a crab roll masked with a strong flavor. More so, I was just floored by the cost -which because it was a special roll - was not advertised. Needless to say, many regrets for an expensive lite dinner. The beautiful options from the sushi bar, including the sashimi would have likely left me more pleased. I would recommend the restaurant, but would choose more carefully in the future. I am not one to skimp on great food, I simply felt that the price versus the food experience left me feeling a little slighted.

I love this place. The atmosphere is swanky and fun. The food is always great and the white cranberry martini is my favorite drink in the city. That said-- this is LA Live. So it can get a little touristy and crazy on some nights. Just make sure you know what is going on at Staples or Microsoft Theater before you book. Otherwise parking can be crazy. But if you are in town visiting or within walking distance-- add it to your to do list, for sure!
Horrible. We had no plates to eat on for 5-7 mins after our food came out. My soda came out 5 mins after our entree came out. My friend didn't have his water cup refilled until 5 minutes later. It started to rain and we dined outdoor, but our server still didn't have the audacity to bring us our bill. Never coming back!
I've been to many Katsuya locations and this was such a disappointment. The food quality is very bad this evening. Not sure if this is always how this location is. I ordered two lychee martinis and neither of them looked the same as each other and both of them rates nothing like the ones I've ordered at the other locations. The fish was not up to par. Wouldn't waste my time going back there again. I'll stick with the Hollywood location.

I've been here many times....every time i've been disappointed! The quality of fish is subpar for the prices. The hot food took forever! The service is verrrry lack luster. The restaurant is way too loud to have a conversation, especially if you're shoved in the back of the restaurant at a 2-top with others right on top of you. On top of all that, they have the audacity to charge $18 for a tiny rocks glass don julio blanco margarita. Couldn't have been more the 1.25 ounces of tequila in each one. SERIOUSLY RIDICULOUS!
Great, fresh sushi!
Even though we were there near closing time, they took good care of us. We had a reservation after the Laker game but it went long ( but at least the Lakers won that night!). They tend to run out of items (toro, uni) later which is too bad but understandable. Love the baked crab hand rolls and yellowtail w/ jalapeño. Nice wine and sake list.

Great food on a busy night
We were in a hurry to get to an event, as was just about every person at the restaurant that night! Our waiter was very attentive to that without making us feel like we pushed him. He watched for our food, brought it out quickly and managed a late arrival to our party with great patience. We were in and out of there on time and had a fabulous meal in the process! We were also given great recommendations by the waiter when we asked about specific options.
Another good visit to Katsuya LA Live
Good Consistent food. Good consideration and speed for us because we were going to a Lakers game. Thien our server was outstanding.
Time to savor the great food
Great food with flexible ordering, so if you want to make little changes, they're happy to do it. It was a little windy outside, but otherwise, the atmosphere was great. It allowed us to enjoy cool surroundings and great conversation. Service was a bit slow and our server kept disappearing right when we needed drink refills or more sushi, but maybe that's because we were outside. We weren't in a rush, so we made the best of it. My kids would have loved the food, but the pacing was too slow, so I'm glad we didn't bring them.

Server didn't check back & 1 dish never came to the table, but the server removed it from the bill and everything else was great
Great menu, good food. Very lively place for family or friends. Noise level was high, so not so good for romantic dining. Made reservations with Open Table a couple of days before visiting LA. Rating for this restaurant was above average and it certainly turned out that way.
I wish it was better
Huge Kings fan and sushi fan. I have wanted to go for quite some time now. My friends from Napa came down to Clippers/Warriors Basketball game and after we meet them there. Very excited because it seemed like a great place to eat. The seats were weird, 2 were like sofa really low then the rest chairs around the table, so I thought I was in the kiddy chair. The noise was really loud and we could not hear each other. Which I understand people are having fun, but it really was hard to hear anything. After ordering our food it took about 1 hour to get. By the time we got our complete order the restaurant was almost empty. I understand they were busy, but my girl ordered a veggie roll, not filet mignon. That was the last thing to arrive. Our waitress seemed overwhelmed, though she was very nice and attentive, I didn't blame her. What really shocked me was the price. 6 people, 1 didn't eat, so actually 5, came out over $200 for 3 appetizers and 5 rolls. And we still left hungry. That should never happen when you spend that much. I have a hard time recommending this place on many levels, but my biggest disappointment was how much you get for the price you pay.
worst service I had in any restaurant ever
I have made reservation for 6:30 and we got sat down right away at 6:30 as we got to our table We had to wait 10 minutes for drink order then waited 23 minutes longer after finally asked for manager and she had to get our waitress and she took our order , we placed 2 sushi rolls and one teriyaki chicken , we got the chicken and one of the roll and after 15 minutes waiting AGAIN that I had to ask for our waitress from another waitress !!!! brought to her attention that we have not received our 2nd roll sushi's she said she had to go and look and came back said :that type of roll it takes longer so we waited another 12 minutes to get our last roll , I have been in lot of sushi bars and no eel roll sushi would take 30. Our waitress never asked if we wanted anything else and being serviced so badly I also left a note n the bill as well .

food is a little pricey but nonetheless is very tasty
Very good, as always
Being an LALive restaurant, expectations might be on the low side. While it is LOUD and the music a bit pulsing, the food is very good. Creative and interesting Japanese food using sometimes eclectic ingredients. Interesting and very flavorful presentations. I’ve found the raw fish to be very fresh and of top quality. Worth sorting out the menu and trying a few things. While not cheap (It is Katsuya designed by Philippe Starck in LALive), but I find the food worthy with some very nice wine options that pair nicely with the food. Had a lovely German Kabinett Riesling with a wee bit of bottle age (2011) that paired well. The service was professional and efficient.
Delicious food, service was lacking
I work in DTLA and enjoy treating myself to lunch at Katsuya from time to time. The food is always delicious. However, for the 1st time, I was displeased with the service. My waiter rarely checked on me, did not refill my water glass, and virtually disappeared when I was ready to settle the check. Very disappointing for an otherwise excellent dining experience.
First and last time!
Seems like a case where the restaurant chain has become so popular that their customer service is no longer important. We had 5:30 reservations to beat the crowd. Ordered drinks and an appetizer right away. The restaurant filled up and others were getting their food...no appetizer, after 2 complaints to the waiter! Appetizer comes...2 minutes later 1 entrée comes, 15 minutes pass. Flag down waiter to take back the cold entree until the second entree comes. 10 minutes later both entrees come...the first entrée (fish) had been kept warm during the wait. This is not how one would expect the food or the customer to be treated for a high priced dining experience.
It was worst dining experience
We were a group of 6 with reservation. The waiter was slow and gave us wrong recommendation. Our food didn't arrive by 1.5 hour so we had to cancel the order. It wasnt busy at all and most of the tables were empty. It's quite sad that they still charged us tip for group of 6 even though they never served us food. The manager didn't have the courtesy to come and apologize. If I could give them a -5 rating I would have. Never will go there.
