About John's City Diner
By blending a bit of the old with the new, owner Shannon Gober has transformed this Downtown Birmingham landmark into John's City Diner. While the restaurant still maintains much of the charm from the past, the decor and menu have undergone a face-lift. The menu at John's City Diner features a wide range of flavors from Southern comfort food to Gastro Pub inspired dishes. We use only locally grown or Organic produce. Every meat that we use is hormone, GMO and antibiotic free such as Fudge Farms Family Pork, Springer Mountain Farms Chicken and Creekstone All Natural Beef. Our bar features 12 local craft beers on draft, 15 wines by the glass and hand crafted cocktails using the most honest ingredients available. As we like to say at John's, "Get Some".

Awesome "Fancy Bacon" or pork belly with their signature Roasted Corn Grits. My friend had the Nashville style Chicken and Waffles and raved about that dish also. We will return.

The pork belly and grits were terrible the pork belly was deep fried and lost all flavor. The spicy chicken and waffles was inedible overall we were very disappointed as this place came highly recommended
Absolutely Amazing Dinner before show at Lyric
Fantastic dinner. one of the best restaurant meals I have ever had. Focus is on quality, not quantity - which I appreciate. Fun Specialty drinks. What they do - they do VERY well. They are not trying to be something they are not. A local old restaurant fee, like a find in the French quarter or something. Organic and local produce and meat makes for a DELICIOUS dinner. Can't wait to come back!

John's is back! This is the place where we got engaged 30 years ago and the new owners have brought it back. We've been eaten there three times this year when downtown for a play and two concerts.
John's was perfect!! It had such a nice upgraded/modern diner feel. They did a great job keeping the diner theme yet making it comfy, cozy and inviting. Our food was incredible. (My husband had the meatloaf and I had a chicken salad.) my husband is very partial to homemade meatloaf and LOVED his meal! Our server was equally as incredible. Attentive, personable and responsive yet not intrusive. We had a fanatic evening and would absolutely go back go John's if we visit Birmingham again!!
John's City Diner is a great local spot with great food. Everyone is super nice there, and they have a nice vibe going on. Prices aren't cheap, but food is delicious (be prepared to spend around $16-$23 a meal). I would definitely recommend checking it out.

Awesome. Nice to see good local people doing it the right way. For all the old school John's Restaurant people, this is not your old John's. Hip, fresh, local vibe with great food. Where else can you get 12 Alabama draft beers for $3 in the bar during happy hour?
Quiet Saturday Night
It was very quiet/empty for 8:00 Saturday night. We felt like we had to talk in hushed tones b/c it was so quiet. Ordered sweet heat pork rinds app, Nashville chicken & waffles, veggie mac & cheese, and dark chocolate bread pudding. Pork rinds were interesting, not my favorite thing in the world, but good flavor. Husband enjoyed the hot chicken. The cheese sauce in the mac was a little thinner than I like, but tasted good. Cocktails were really good. Our waiter was very friendly.
Terrible service.Waited 20 mints. for our waitress
Over all terrible experience. I have given it two chances and still not overwhelmed. High prices and average food. Service is almost nonexistent

Great selection of local beers. Reasonably priced and large portions. Good vibe in the heart of Downtown. We will be back often.
Nice to get back John's. Great Southern concepts: wonderful Brussel sprout appetizers, super pimento cheese. Meatloaf was great and so was chicken waffle. Desserts were true bonus.
Visited with two other couples - six in all. Had a wonderful evening - great food. One of us is a real food critic - and loved it!

Chicken and waffles was very good. Really recommend the pimento cheese app as well. Overall loved our visit.
Mondays in Birmingham
On a Monday in Birmingham, if you want to entertain an out-of-town foodie guest, the options are limited. Many of the famous restaurants are closed on Mondays, so I decided on lunch at John's City Diner. It's a Birmingham landmark and it's been a while since I last ate there. The food was really good. Our group of three had the brussells sprouts as an appetizer and each of us selected a different entree from the limited selection on the menu. I personally got the meatloaf and potatoes with fried onion straws. It was tasty and the meatloaf had a surprisingly firm texture. The mashed potatoes were also very firm--the kind that remain in a scoop on your plate even though they are holding up a stack of meatloaf and onion straws! The flavors were appropriate for each item, but nothing particularly notable. You might say bland. Our server was good and attentive, even as the restaurant began to get busy and she picked up several other tables. I do recommend John's to others who want a home-cooked meal while on the go.
Felt like the old Johns
Back in the 70s and 80s... and 90s, these was a very popular restaurant for lunch and an elegant dinner. Since that time the original owners have gone but the place has largely remained unchanged. The recession had to have been difficult for them, particularly with so much downtown traffic in the evenings gone. But, the new owners have hung on and while some of the old favorites are missing (the slaw. the cornbread sticks) we were very pleasantly surprised this past Friday night. Food was excellent, the crowd was good and they got us in and out in plenty of time for our first Uber trip to the Lyric. We very much look forward to coming back to Johns.

I ate here twice last week and once so far this week. Just can't get enough. Nothing better than giving your money to hard working, local folks.

Crab cakes were loaded with fresh, lump crabmeat. The fresh shucked corn relish was a nice addition. Very busy when we were there but the service was quick and pleasant. A winner.

Never disappoints. The new menu with fresh sautéed garlic spinach is great. Three kinds of Chicken and Waffles is ridiculous.
Expensive for service and quality of food
My lunch was $30 + tip for crab cakes, ice tea, coffee, chocolate bread pudding. 3 small crab cakes and no sides for $16. Mostly stuffing. One of our party ordered the red velvet dessert. It was served frozen, rock solid. Person could not cut it because of how hard it was.
Received food poisoning from the meat loaf
Stopped in Birmingham for the night and treated myself to what appeared to be a local gem and wasn't disappointed. All food tasted made to order and the server was helpful with menu options.

The Mac & Cheese is one of, if not the best out there. It is not your typical Southern Mac and cheese. It has it's own style as does most everything else in this inventive restaurant. Drop by for a visit and you will not be disappointed.
The Macaroni with Prosciutto was not good. It was runny and luke warm. If John's chose to select a portion and then bake it in a Pyrex dish until the soup turned to soufflé... Then it might be desirable. However, I would not recommend this dish to anyone.

They ran out of their signature dish, chicken and waffles at 6PM on a Saturday. So that was a bummer!
Simple and delicious
There was an issue with our server on the matter of change on a cash bill. It took 10 minutes too long to resolve the issue that should have never been an issue. She was,in general, very distracted/MIA, or possibly just new and overwhelmed. Definitely not enough to keep me away from this place. Delicious food for a great value ! I had the Cubano and my friend had the pork chops. Both were delicious.
Loved it, will be back
Went of our anniversary to try out a new place. We will be back as the Mac & Cheese, Chicken & Waffles, and Trout were all excellent.
This visit was disappointing
We have been frequent customers. We asked for bread or rolls, which has always been served. the waitress said they no longer provide it. I ordered the "springfield chicken" "but not well done and not dried up". I have ordered this in the past and it was always delicious. Sure enough it arrived very well done and dried up, so that it was difficult to eat. I ate some and left the rest. I did not want to say anything because if they replaced it my meal would be delayed and others in my party would have finished eating. I did call and ask for the manager to tell them about my experience. She listened but did not even have the decency to show any concern or apologize. There's no shortage of great restaurants in Birmingham. This is not one.

iT'S BEEN A WHILE SINCE WE'VE BEEN
We had a company sales meeting with our sales guys from our various locations. I was trying to find a place that was close to the office and open on a Monday night. I was on yelp and I saw John's City Diner and the ratings. I remember going to John's for lunch quite often when I first moved to Birmingham in the late 80's and I had been to the new place only once. The menu was good and the food was good. I wish it has some more Diner type selections on it, but overall everyone was pleased with their meals. If I had to make another suggestion, it would be to have dimmer lighting in the dining room.
The environment was quiet and the service was good. We started with a small mac and cheese appetizer. It was so good. For my entry I had been told the chicken and waffles were great so I tried them and was not disappointed. My wife had the trout which she did not like. She is not one to complain but did offer some feedback when asked which was taken graciously by the waitress. While we didnt ask, she insisted that it be removed from the bill. We might try it again as a brunch place as the menu still has some interesting dishes I would like to try.
Try all of the mac & cheese varieties...superb.
Wonderful comfort food, suggest trying all of the mac & cheese varieties.
Please think about having an option of smaller tri amount sampler for desserts ... The Diners amount for desserts are a little to large for 1 person ...
The food was amazing
The food was amazing
We found this place when we googled the area around our hotel. Was exactly what we were looking for - quiet, delicious southern food, very good bar menu. Server was outstanding. Drinks yummy - Elder Fashion was to die for. Highly recommend!
I love John's City Dinner. I've been there many times. I recommend the Crispy Duck or Chicken and Waffle and the dark chocolate bread pudding is so good it's part of what keeps bringing me back. It's worth the 60 miles I drive to Birmingham. The service has always been good and the dining area is nice and comfortable
They've got meat loaf perfected! Great ambiance and just an overall wonderful meal.
Service and food were wonderful. Especially enjoyed appetizers. Had both the pan-fried Brussel sprouts and the pork belly.
Local restaurant worth frequenting
I've only been to John's twice in the 30 years I've lived in Birmingham. It is an iconic restaurant that I didn't discover until a couple of years ago. The concept of a modern diner is fun and right up my alley. The food has been good both times, and our entire party seemed pleased with their choices of food and drink. Unfortunately, our server did not seem to be very happy with our group. We went for a birthday dinner and were only a group of 8. He did not seem to like us from the get go. I saw him roll his eyes at us several times throughout the meal. He did not appear willing to wait on orders and actually walked off while one of my group was looking over the drink menu. We will go back for the food and hope not to be seated with that server.
good selection of craft beers, excellent service, the food was delicious. our waitress even noticed that she hadn't initially included a happy hour discount and saved us $20 we weren't even aware could be saved.
