About John J Jeffries at the Lancaster Arts Hotel
During renovations, workers found in the floor beams a signed inspection stamp--November 5, 1890--with the name of tobacco inspector John J. Jeffries. We named the restaurant after him.
We’ve designed our menu based on local, seasonal, sustainable and organic agriculture and delicious recipes. Please join us and taste the difference of local farm-to-table sustainable cuisine in one of Lancaster's best fine dining restaurants.
As the Chefs and Owners of John J Jeffries, we believe you will find our passion for supporting local businesses and preserving the land we live on, to be contagiously obvious in how we run our restaurant.
All of our meats are raised locally, confinement-free on fresh green grass pastures. No hormones, antibiotics, steroids or forced-fertilization occurs.
Our produce is local organic or chemical free. We use local grass fed cream, butter and eggs.

John J Jeffries at the Lancaster Arts Hotel Ratings and Reviews
I took my wife to John J Jeffries on her birthday. The entire experience at the restaurant was wonderful. With the reservation booked through OpenTable, the front of restaurant staff received my request for a nice table due to the nature of the celebration. They did all they could for us to get us a nice table and finally they succeeded for us--we were given one of the best tables. We were off to a great start. It only got better from there--the service and food matched each other perfectly, both were exceptional. The seasonal menu was innovative and the kitchen showed an amazing touch with both our appetizers as well as our entrees. Being located in the middle of farm country has it's benefits--the food was all locally grown and sourced and the results were outstanding. The salad was super fresh and the crawfish and grits were put together perfectly. For dinner we had the "Gordita", think pork belly, over the grits with a crème fraiche--AMAZING. We also had the Red Deer "Java Leg" steak, which had no gamey taste at all--it tasted like a fine cut of beet. Also amazing. The restaurant provides a complimentary dessert, we chose the Chocolate Pate, which was a fantastic way to finish our meal. I'm not even sure how to describe what came out, except a dense chocolate creation appeared and melted in our mouths as we ate it. Truly a FINE dining experience to rival virtually any. Well done to the entire restaurant staff (especially the kitchen staff!!!).

John J. Jeffries - great vibe, great food
Had a chance to catch up with an old friend and John J. Jeffries was a place we had not tried. Very glad we did. The menu is fantastic with many different choices. Highly recommended!!
A VACATION FIND
Vacationing in Lancaster for the first time in many years we were thrilled to find this farm-to-table gem! We felt a happy, peaceful vibe from the moment we walked in. Loved the friendly, knowledgeable, unpretentious service. Our meal was simply divine perfection! Apps like pork belly and liver with onions carried us into the stratosphere and the grilled trout was delightful. Homemade sorbets rang fresh and sophisticated in flavor and presentation. The best and final meal of our weekend and a wonderful remembrance of beautiful Lancaster. We will be back!

Amazing. We were celebrating both my birthday and our 9th anniversary, and they were so complementary and sweet. Hunter and the manager worked together to make it very special for us!
Very nice evening
The atmosphere in both the bar and the restaurant were relaxed and fun. The drinks, wine and food were all great. I have already recommended it to my friends and family.
A foody find that exceeded expectations.
Great service, diverse menu. The small plates are great - a chance to sample more than one of their well prepared dishes. The short rib tacos and crawfish & grits from the small plate menu were more than enough for an entree. The char was cooked perfectly and presented well.

We had a group of 8 which they had no problem accommodating. We arrived for our reservation and were seated immediately. The outdoor patio is very nice. It makes you feel like you are eating in a park. The servers were gracious and attentive. Our server was Carl. The food and wine selection was wonderful. As always, we were extremely pleased with our experience, and will continue to return. Thank you for making us feel special.

Fantastic meal. I love that they change up the menu and use local ingredients. We will definitely be returning!
When the chef (owner) goes out of their way to cook my wife and I venison, even when it is not on the menu, John J. Jeffries will always get high praise from us. The appetizers and entrée were delicious as always. We highly recommend this place.
Outstanding food and atmosphere!
Very nice place for a nice date or special occasion!! We will be going back in the near future!
Great Food! Great Drinks!
Moscow Mule, Crayfish and Grits outstanding. As was the Lamb and Duck. We will be back.

Overall We had a nice experience here. The food was awesome, but service was a bit subpar. Our waitress left us in the middle of service and didn't notify us so we weren't sure who to request service from. Menu was great though, and wine options were decent too. It was a nice place to dine for convenience staying at the Arts Hotel. The bar there was decent too.
Sauces, taste and great wait staff
Food from local growers, magnificent reductions sauces, erudite staff and friendly atmosphere add up to a great start to the evening. Overcoming a few dark tables with mini lights was a good idea.

Meatballs with risotto, AMAZING, as food always is here. Impeccable service, perfect dining experience!!
Retirement dinner with family
The experience was very memorable, from the ambience to the food and finished the evening off with a complimentary glass of champagne because of a special occasion. I will definitely be going back.
We were absolutely thrilled!
The food was absolutely delicious, and the staff was wonderful. We had Veronica for a server and could not have been happier with the service. We both walked in with motorcycle gear and kind of looked like fish out of water compared to the very well dressed customers, but our exterior clearly didn't bother them at all. We will definitely be back. (P.S. You HAVE to try the vanilla chai tea creme brulee!)

The predinner drinks and cheese plate were great! The bartender had excellent suggestions. The service was prompt and friendly. The crispy pork belly was fantastic! We also had the duck wings, which were crispy and cover in a butter and hot sauce. The scallops and lobster over grits were perfectly cooked and well balanced. We were so full that we skipped dessert. Will definitely be back!
Why would you ever go to a chain when this exists?
Everything I've ever tasted here just explodes with flavor! The Shanker (tacos) is a must-eat and since everything is seasonal, ultra-fresh, and local the menu is always being reinvented. We've seriously said to each other "I can't believe we'd eat at chains when restaurants like this exist." It's worth saving up and not going to other restaurants twice to go here just once!
Great food but ruined our surprise
I threw a surprise dinner for my fiance' on March 19. We had a large party of 10. The hostess still managed to ruin the surprise for my fiance' after being told by the 10 people individually who arrived before us, and the fact that I had called earlier that day to make sure it was not ruined and several days before that. I was extremel upset by her incompetence and ignorance.
We picked this place to take an Aunt & Uncle out for a special dinner while we were visiting them in Lancaster, based on the Google reviews. We made reservations online via open Table and arrived at the appointed time. We let the hostess know who we were and that we have book reservations online. The hostess checked their computer and then seated us. After about 15 minutes, we received a phone call... from the restaurant... and they wanted to know why we hadn't shown up for our reservations. As it turned out, the meal was a real disappointment. Two of us ordered the Duck, which that night was grilled. It was delivered cooked rare and was so tough that it couldn't be cut with their dull steak knives, let alone chewed. The other two people had grass fed beef steaks, which were good, as were the accompanying vegetables, but certainly nothing special for the market price of $36 each. The tab for the four of us, with one mixed drink, 5 glasses of wine, 3 desserts and the tip was $270... a pretty stiff price for such a disappointing dinner. On the bright side, our server (Carl) was very gracious and provided excellent servcie. He did offer to have the horrendous duck meals "fixed" - we declined, as in our judgement there was no way to salvage them that would have provided any degree of satisfaction.
Gem to discover
Exquisite gem of a culinary experience, from the decor, lighting, attention to detail, and menu to the actual tasting of the most delectable offerings, this is not a restaurant one should miss. Definitely a rising star in the Lancaster restaurant scene.

Service was exemplary, I would definitely go again
Service was outstanding, even if you have special dietary concerns they will make sure your entire party is happy. Great experience! Loved the mushroom soup.

Food was great, only thing was that even though we had a reservation, we still had to wait for a table and it wasn't the greatest table in the room.
Always fabulous! Great menu.
My favorite restaurant in Lancaster. Food is always delicious . Things you don't see everywhere. Love their specials. I Always make it a point to order them!! Service is wonderful. Great restaurant
We came to John J. Jeffries with a large group for my husband's birthday. The server was informative and fun, and the food was great. Excellent experience!
Great little gem!!
Just a great place, with exceptionally creative and unique dishes. If you consider yourself a foodie, you owe it to yourself to try this place.
Good, but trendy and expensive.
Although I'm glad that Lancaster City has developed a trendy, arty scene as embodied by this restaurant, I found its self-consciously hip environment and its expensive, slightly off the map menu choices to be not as "sustainable" as they purport to be. I am glad to have experienced John J. Jeffries at the Arts Hotel, but I am not in a big hurry to return. However, I am sure that well-heeled hipsters and foodies will love it.

Service was fantastic. Really appreciate the help trying to decide which wine to pick. My mother for some reason wasn't happy with either the oyster soup (though my dad liked his...might have been preference for clams vs oysters IDK) I went to town with the caviar salad, scallops/mushrooms and the chocolate pate. I really enjoyed my chocolate pate and my dad enjoyed his cinnamon creme brulee. Had a bite of that...it was perfect. Is this place pricey? Absolutely. But is it worth every penny? Absol-frigging-lutely! I'm from out of town but if I'm ever in Lancaster again, would definitely come here again!

We will return!
Delicious. All of it. Will return especially for the Crayfish and Grits dish. Best chorizo my wife had ever had, and she's quite a foodie!
Best food I've had in a while
For fine dining in the area, I'd sooner hurry back here for seconds before anywhere else I've eaten at in Lancaster.
First Time there, Food was excellent. would have give them a 5-star rating, but the macaroni's and cheese (small dish) was just lukewarm on the inside. The atmosphere was good. My hearing is not the best, so the bar noise made at a bit difficult the hear the waitress. Bar was not loud, but it was my sit location. Besides that, I will definitely come again.
This restaurant is a gem
Been there a few times and the food and service are always fantastic. Great value. Cannot wait to go back.
Not worth the money
Everything was beautiful, with wonderful attention to detail, and the food was great-- however, not $89 per person great. In fact, I've had better at several "regular" restaurants where entrees cost less than one sixth of the cost of a Jeffries meal. This would have been a fantastic place to recommend to couples looking for a romantic night out, if it wasn't priced three times more than it's realistically worth. I knew what the price was before eating there, I was just under the impression that I might get an experience worth remembering. In the end, I was left wanting more, and feeling robbed.
Our favorite strikes again...
We were so looking forward to our Valentine's special menu and it did not disappoint. From the Lavender Sidecar at the bar to the delicious food and wine pairings, the meal was amazing. The service, as usual, was fantastic and it's always great to see your favorite servers. Go to JJJs, for just for a quick drink at the bar or the whole shebang...it'll be your favorite too!
