Janko's Little Zagreb Ratings and Reviews
An amazing meal
The food at Janko's Little Zagreb is amazing. The steak might be the best I've ever had. For $41 I got a massive 28 oz. porterhouse with a baked potato, salad, and bread. A bit pricey, but still a lot of food for that cost. The service was fast and the servers friendly. The decor of the restaurant is very school-spirited and fun. My one complaint was that the seating was a bit cramped as the tables are very near one another (this is understandable however - it's so good that lots of people want to eat there!) I would highly recommend Janko's Little Zagreb for special occasions or even when you're just in the mood for an absolutely delicious meal.
Great food, great service
My family traveled to Bloomington to celebrate my freshman son's birthday. I looked online for a new place that we had not been, and found Janko's. The reviews were overwhelmingly positive with most raving about the steaks. I ordered the 16 oz sirloin medium well. It came out more medium, as it was a little more pink than I normally prefer. Our server did offer to take it back and cook a little more but I declined, as I don't mind a medium steak. It was quite delicious, but in hindsight I probably should have sent it back for additional grilling. The service was excellent. The tables are on the smallish side for 4 people, so our server(s) stopped by often to remove used plates to ensure we had enough space. The atmosphere is red-and-white IU red-themed, to be expected, which added to the restaurant's character. We really enjoyed our experience and would certainly go for a repeat visit in the future.
Great meal with friends!
Our son is at IU in Bloomington, so we have had several people tell us that we had to try Zagreb's for dinner some time. We finally had a chance to go a few weeks ago with friends and everyone was correct. The service was very friendly, the portions were large, and the food was great! I had the NY Steak and had to take almost half of it home as it was huge (no complaints there). If you get a steak you have to get the sauteed mushrooms, as they were wonderful. The only thing that I would suggest that they work on is allowing you to finish one item before bringing the next course. It is understood that most restaurants are focused on moving people in and out quickly to maximize the number of customers each night, which is fine for Denny's, but not when you are ordering a $50.00 - $60.00 meal per person with all included. When you go out for that kind of meal you want a little time to visit with friends. We ordered shrimp cocktails as appetizers (which the cocktail sauce is perfect) and our dinner salads (get the blue cheese dressing) arrived after eating just a few shrimp. Then our main courses arrived before we were half way done with our salads. Prompt service is always appreciated when going out to eat, but there is a line between prompt and feeling rushed to eat and move on to free up the table. Overall, we truly enjoyed the meal and will definitely be back.
Little Zagreb first impression
2 hits, 2 misses. The food and service at Janko's is unquestionably the best in Indiana. However, the fact that only select beers and wines are available makes the experience a little lacking for those who enjoy a broader selection of drinks. Another disappointment is the dated atmosphere of a "sports bar" in a downtown setting. For the prices of the food, one would expect that at least "some" of the profits go back into the building and fixtures. The table my wife and I sat at was nowhere near level, and we felt as if something was going to slide off before we finished our meal.
Good steaks. Great tradition
Janko's consistently delivers well seasoned steaks with hearty portions, great spicy meat balls and simple sides that satisfy. The atmosphere is energetic (don't go there for a quiet dinner), vibrant and sure to please any Indiana U fan. You won't leave there hungry or broke. Highly recommended as long as you aren't looking for some swanky steakhouse.
Janko's - best steak around
We left Bloomington in 1981 and when we come back, Janko's is first thing on the list. Always the best steak any where.
I had heard how good Zagrebs was and always wanted to try it. I thought it was mediocre at best. My New York Strip was fatty with gristle. I was waiting for the moment when you cut into a steak and just go HMMMM, that did not happen. My son had a filet and it was good.
Best steaks ever!!!
Little Zagreb has absolutely the best steaks anywhere, anytime. We also love their spicy Bucharest meatballs. Splitting a big filet and the meatballs between two people is the best of all worlds. We took a guest from Colorado there, he ordered the filet, and pronounced that "This was the best steak I have ever had!" It can be crowded, and the main room has small tables, but the steaks are worth the close conditions. Weekend nights, reservations are especially important. Have a great wine list too, with different varietals at different price levels, which is appreciated (some restaurants in Bloomington ONLY have wines at the pricier end, and we just end up not going to those very often).

The spicy meatballs were delicious. You must try them.
Our 1st Time at Little Zagreb's
This was our first time to visit Janko's Little Zagreb's and we will definitely be return customers. Our server was very helpful with answering our questions about the menu items. The steaks were cooked perfectly to order and were very tasty!! We particularly liked the rolls served with our meal, they were also very good. Salad was very fresh and the dressings were awesome.
Best steak in town
We have eaten there many times and the food is always great. It is rather pricey, but the quality of food cannot be topped. We did have to wait about 15 minutes beyond our reservation time on this occasion which would normally bother me, but they were very busy. This is a perfect place for special occasions or if you just want the best steak in town.
Seriously love this place. The food is amazing and the service is impeccable. I would recommend this place to anyone who is looking for fantastic food and service. I always get the steakhouse burger and always have enough left over for another 2 meals. This place is really hard to beat. One of mine and my family's favorite places. We even make the 2 hour drive just to go to Janko's!!!
It was my 3rd visit here. I took my daughter and her room mate out for dinner. The Steaks are very good. I would have rated it a little higher but the ambience and noise levels make Janko's Little Zagreb a bit too pricey for what you receive. If you are looking for a good steak and fun place, this is great. If you are conducting a business dinner or looking for a romantic setting, it would not be my choice.
Saw John Mellencamp AND Christie Brinkley! Service was great. Food was amazing. We had spicy meatballs for app. Then ribeyes...with lobster tail.
Food excellent, service above excellent!!!
As always, this restaurant is one of Bloomingtons "BEST of the BEST"!
We so enjoyed the whole dining experience, we haven't eaten here for several years and the food was so delicious. I will have to say that the new items on the menu were an added bonus for us. We had the Porterhouse, Lobster tail, Shrimp Cocktail and the Sea Scallops. It was prepared so well and the flavor was incredible. we had enough for leftovers to take home and they heated well and got to savor the flavor again. Our waitress Katy was exceptional as well. I need to mention the Chocolate black cherry cheesecake was fabulous. We will be back for sure.
Birthday date for daughter
we visited on monday evening to celbrate my daughter's birthday. i was expecting a more fancy place with a special feeling for a special date. I imagine it is a good place for parents to bring their student children when they visit. the food was good by too expensive for what we got. i enjoyed the IU theme but it was very noisy. We could hardly hear each other's conversation. the waitress was good and kept us served. She provided cheesecake with lit candle, on the house , to celebrate the birthday.
I make an annual trip to Bloomington. It always includes dinner at Little Zagreb. I love everything that I have tried there. The meatballs are incredible. The steaks are amazing. The wine list is outstanding. The servers are always friendly and efficient. Who can ask for more?
A must for those "special" occasions
It's a little pricey, but worth every penny. As someone who lives in Bloomington, it's a restaurant I can't afford to go to every day, but it makes those special occasions truly special. Give yourself additional time to find a parking space, as parking around the Courthouse square and in/around the facility is limited and always difficult when school is in session. Use the Open Table app to make your reservations, as it saves time and assures you getting in.
Little Zagreb's - Spectacular
I normally only go to Janko's for special occasions but with an advertisement for half price appetizers during Spring Break I couldn't pass it up. Table of 4 with 2 pounds of perfectly cooked Medium Rare steaks. 1 friend hadn't been to Janko's in a bit but after this experience they will definitely be coming back. 8 thumbs up... :)
Best Steak in Bloomington
Best steak I have had in Bloomington. The place is a little hole in the wall joint with red checker table cloths. Great service with a smile. Impressive wine list. The place is a little pricey in my opinion. So not somewhere I would eat every week, but maybe every now and again when I get a hankering for a good steak.
This was, hands down, the best beef I've ever tasted. I had the 7 oz. filet, ordered medium well, and cooked to perfection. The taste was amazing, and the texture was so tender. Perfect baked potato, nice wine list. My daughter didn't care for her eggplant dish too much, but this IS a steak house. I also didn't care for the balsamic vinaigrette, a bit too thick and gloppy.
If you go to Bloomington you have to eat here at least once!

We had a 7:00 pm reservation. We arrived at 7:00 but weren't seated until 7:45. No room to wait. Once seated, I had an open unpleasant view of the kitchen. I ordered my steak medium well. It was first sent out with blood dripping from it. I sent it back and received a charred piece of leather in it's place. My server was excellent and I wasn't charged for my steak. Certainly not an experience I hope to repeat

Inspired food, insipid service
The family and I regularly get the Sirloin for two on the biennial date night - a preferred meal for special occasions. The meat has not disappointed in the past, nor its preparation: Ordered medium, pink in the middle, tasty char, and melt-in-your-mouth texture. On this occasion, the steak met all of these expectations. We are entirely accustomed to the cafeteria decor, it's a part of the charm to us. Things were not so busy that night, so we weren't at all crowded in. Where the design came up short were the benches set up for booths - the backs were so loose that when the man behind me leaned back too quickly, I almost ended up with my face in my plate! The only aspect of the experience which I plainly disliked was the behavior of the waitress. She seemed displeased to be serving us, was sarcastic and crass. She wouldn't stop trying to grab our plates and asking us if we were done yet. She hovered unpleasantly. Overall, we enjoyed our dinner, but the management strategy could use some work. Prices are a little high with good service, much less bearable with bad service.
The place for steaks in Bloomington
Little Zagreb has the reputation of being the place to go for steaks in town. They are outstanding. They're not cheap, which is clear enough from the menu outside. Inside, the ambiance is surprisingly casual -- one can easily imagine a crowd of IU football players chowing down here. Looks can deceive. The service is excellent, and the wine list is good too. It can be a little noisy. But Janko's is an institution.

We had an 8:30 reservation and sat on time- even though it was crazy busy. The steaks were excellent, the service was friendly and appropriately attentive. I brought in a birthday cake for dessert and they were happy to hold it for us then serve it. Not at all fancy, just great steaks. Highly recommend it!
A Bloomington Institution
Probably nothing new can be said. It has been awhile since we have been there. Have to say, we were pleased that there was some improvement on the side salad. Used to be all Iceberg lettuce and was pretty blah. There now is a better mix of greens. Iceberg lettuce just shouldn't be included at all. The dressing was good and if anything could be improved, it is still the side salad. However, the bottom line is the meal, as always, was great and this is a restaurant worthy of a high rating.
Great old-fashioned steakhouse
This is where you come to eat steak. Great steaks, simply and flavorfully prepared. The side dishes... well, there aren't really any. Your steak comes with a nice salad (highly recommend the house-made ranch, others come in a packet) and a baked potato w/ butter & sour cream. That's it. Appetizers are unique, though. We tried the SPICY meatballs (emphasis mine), very good, lots of smoked paprika. And the cheese plate, while an odd choice for a steakhouse, had a great selection of quality cheeses, nuts, dried fruit and crispy toast to enjoy it with. Also, just beer and wine, no mixed drinks. But a great time was had by all.
A loud unromantic night
I always remembered Janckos food from the past as outstanding. It had been a long time since I had been there, and I had made our reservations a week in advance. I had really bragged the place up to my wife. we were almost 35 minutes getting our seat, but I remembered the food being worth the wait. The service was excellent, however, the first steak that was brought to us was way over seasoned. The second was under cooked, by the time we had gotten our second steak back we were done with our salad and potato. So we just wrapped up the steak. The sauteed mushrooms had no flavor, and the crowd was so noisy, it sounded like a drunken brawl. This restaurant has obviously changed over the years. I really hate that I used to really enjoy dinning there. It really ruined my evening. It was a bad experience.

Too many people in too short an amount of time! They get everyone in and out before the ballgame! Awesome wait staff!
Not what I had hoped.
The host was obnoxious. The reservations overbooked. Too crowded and noisy to enjoy what was a descent steak.

Steaks were very good, we did feel that we were being rushed thru our dinner: Reservation at 7:30 and by 8:25 they were rushing us out
Best steaks in Bloomington, IN
Fantastic steaks - stripped the porterhouse to the bone! Wonderful and attentive service. Janko's always busy so the restrooms are difficult to access. Make a reservation with OpenTable to avoid a long wait. Our server Sarah provided wonderful service that has continued at Janko's since I attended IU (1987-1991). It was a terrific start to my first visit back to Bloomington with my buddies to attend the IU-Purdue game.
This was a local hot spot for steaks and burgers. The food was good huge steaks prepared on open flame grill, but expect pay.
Fun date on Valentine's Day. Had a reservation and got seated pretty quickly. Love local dining experiences. Lots of ambience. Would dine there again!
