Izumi's Ratings and Reviews
Oriental with a twist
Just found out about the oriental fish fry, it was awesome and we will definitely be back. Only downside was the service. Our server was very nice but gone for long periods of time.
Although the atmosphere has changed at Izumis over time there food is consistent and good quality. I wouldn't go for a date as there are lots of kids and families. Just not as upscale of a vibe as there used to be. But with tons more competition now I guess they have turned to "loyalty rewards program". 2 children were having birthday dinners there on a Saturday night. So, that said, great place for a casual get together or for families.
Going back for the fish fry
Although I've gone to Izumi's for years, (sushi is great) I had never been there for a fish fry. I was really surprised by the quality and quantity. It was a great deal and I would definitely go back again. There was no problem getting a table early, between 6 & 7, but the crowd picked up after 7pm.
Decent, not the best sushi in Milwaukee however
We were seated near the door, and it was rather chilly. Everyone was seated pretty near one another, so not ideal for a romantic one on one conversation. Service was okay, the hostess seemed like she was either really busy or flustered, not sure, but she pulled a set of drink menus from another table with people sitting there and they didn't seem to be thrilled with that. Our server was good however. The sushi was okay, definitely not the best in Milwaukee, in both taste and price. There's better places in Milwaukee to go to, while this place wasn't terrible, it just wasn't for us.

Extremely slow service. Ordered glass of wine and Waiter told me that he gave my glass to another customer so he ordered another one and it took about 20 min just to get my glass of wine. Food was very slow and it wasn't very busy. Sushi was just okay. The seaweed on one of my rolls was so mushy, I had to spit it out. Very disappointed!
Never a bad Friday evening here!
My friends and I often come here after a yoga class and I always reserve a table through Open table. The staff is always friendly, accommodating and the food and value is the best in the city for sushi restaurants. Will be back here many many more times.
The sushi was fine, not great but good. A nice selection of rolls and sashimi and some good Japanese appetizers. We had the seafood and octopus salad and enjoyed it. Biggest problem was that it took close to an hour to finally get our sushi and the server , knowing he had messed up, stopped making eye contact with us and was difficult to flag down. When we were finally served and asked why such a long wait, the server "had no idea." Probably won't return for a while. An hour and a half for two appetizers and a couple of nigiri seems excessive.
I thought the food was fantastic!
The service could of been better. Long intervals between dishes.
Lost In Translation
Izumi's has a special in my heart for being Japanese owned & operated. In my experience as a traveler, "Japanese owned & operated sets a very high quality expectation level. One Japanese friend explained, years ago, to judge a Japanese restaurant by the quality of the gohan (rice). I always share these little tidbits with the missus. So, the disappointment we felt when we noticed the lack of care taken in the presentation of rice, at Izumi's, cannot be described with words. We ordered a sushi platter to share (Valentine's Day 2016) and the disappointment continued. While the eel was decent, every other roll included and was unnecessarily heavy on mayonnaise. This led to them all tasting the same... defeating the purpose of ordering a varied platter. Also, the Spicy Maki looked as though someone dropped it and tried to salvage it on our platter. Most of the rolls were too big. The good news is the udon & miso were tasty and presented well. We walked/drove away with a "bad taste in our mouths" about a return visit. I trust you will find the detailed description helpful. Arigatou gozaimasu.
Highly recommend the Izumi's Special For Two. Each course was delicious and the raw fish was so fresh. The tempura ice cream for dessert was an amazing way to finish off.
Food Excellent - Server forgot we were there.
My wife and I visited for our anniversary. We don't get to the East Side very much and had never been to Izumi's so this definitely was a treat. When I visit a new restaurant I alway ask the server for recommendations. I figure they know the menu and it get's them personally invested in our experience. When we asked the server what was good, the response was "Everything." I thought either this person was a rookie or just busy, so we let it go. We did order and it took a bit of time, close to 40 min but again shrugged it off as the place was pretty busy and we were enjoying each others company. When the sushi came the server asked if we needed anything else, so we ordered some Sake. To make a long story short, it never came. We had long finished eating and the hostess came over with 2 glasses of champagne as I had put in the reservation that is was our anniversary. We told her, nice touch, you saved dinner as we were starting to get a little frustrated. Our server literally disappeared. Every now and then I caught a glimpse of him at the sushi bar that he seemed to be covering too. We told the hostess that the dinner was excellent and asked to find the server to cancel the order for the Sake. She did apologize and found the server who came over and said, "Sorry, I got busy." His lack of attention only resulted in a $38 bill as we did not want to order any more and sit there for another hour. So we left, hungry. Like I said, the food we did get was awesome....the service however, needs some work.

Enjoyed the table top grilling. Cook your own steak, shrimp etc right at your table. Great.
Love Izumi's! Have been going for years and it's always delicious and the service is wonderful!
Izumi's was good as usual
We have been to Izumi's multiple times and it is excellent for Sushi. This trip though the food delivery was very slow. Good but slow.
Outstanding as always.
We hadn't been back to Izumi's in while but found that the food and service were still up to their typical high standard. We enjoyed everything - great food in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. We will not wait so long for the next time.
A busy Friday night provided excellent service, great sushi, and just a great evening for our group! Thanks izumis!
Great service, delicious food.

Great place better food
My wife and I ate here for our anniversary. The service was amazing. Friendly staff. The food was amazing. Excellent quality. Can't wait to go back.
Excellent as usual
We go to Izumi's fairly often and have not been let down their Sushi is excellent which is as much to do with the quality of the fish as it is the preparation. Very traditional not so much Asian Fusion as many of the place in Milwaukee are.
Mixed and disappointing
Food was mixed. Teriyaki chicken was undercooked and visually unappealing. Took 20 minutes to get the bill as she had too many big tables.
Very Nice Casual Sushi Restaurant
Went for the first time this past Saturday night. Overall we really enjoyed the food. And the outdoor seating was nice. There was a person playing guitar but it was very mellow and not at all distracting. Good kids menu and a nice selection of sushi and hibachi dishes. Will definitely be back.
Reservations do not ensure timely tables.
The night we ate at Izumi's our reservation and all others we could see were running about 1/2 hour late. With no explanation. Be aware that if you want to be seated at 7PM, then make your reservation for 6:30PM.
If you want authentic Japanese taste/food, go here
As a native Japanese, we strongly recommend Izumi's , since their food taste like authentic Japanese, not Americanized strong taste. We ordered lunch buffet, and had plenty of maki-rolls as well as other dishes. The Sushi-rice was flavored just fine, and I did not get thirsty as I usually get after I eat at other Sushi-restaurant. Highly recommend.

We love Izumi's and find their sushi to be the best and most traditional in Milwaukee. They had a special toro that tasted wonderful. Service is always welcoming.

It was ok. The food was ok. It was a little bright. The food was prepared quickly. I like good wine with my sushi and ... No.
Excellent Japanese for the Midwest (doesn't compare to California). The signature fish dish we had was delicious. The tempura was good, though not the best I've had. The ambiance quiet, easy for conversation. Really nice place for couples or groups of 4 to have an intimate dinner.
Our dinner & drinks were delicious. The sushi was fantastic & fresh! Can't wait to go back again soon.
Great Japanese in Milwaukee
I got the Chirashi box, which was great. The fish was fresh and it was nicely arranged with a good variety. My husband go the beef teriyaki, which was more savory than sweet with tender beef. Good value. Really nice to have a parking lot in this area of the city. Will be back! They have a lot of small dishes but we didn't try those, going for what we traditionally order whenever we try out a new Japanese restaurant.
very nice, many regulars
My favorite was the Miso soup - best I've ever had. Sushi/Sashimi platter, Shumai, house salad with ginger dressing (generous size salad), Melissa Maki and Negihama Maki - all very good! There were big groups and many regulars - very good sign!
Izumi's accommodated the 4 of us without having to wait. We were seated immediately & our drinks were delicious. We ordered a variety of rolls & were presented with the boat keeping all shellfish separated for the individual with allergies. We had a terrific time & were able to relax, laugh & catch up with our friends without feeling rushed. We'll be back for our next date night.
The food was fine...nothing to write home about
The potstickers we ordered were cold--room temp, really--as if they'd been frozen and not quite cooked through before serving. We ordered a house salad which was very generous (too generous to make any money from at $4!) and fresh and crisp except for the avocado, which had several brown spots. The edamame was generous too but unsalted. The serving pieces were eclectic and attractive, the maki tasted good, and the waitress was attentive without being obtrusive, and everything came to the table in reasonable time. The space looks so cool and huge from the outside, it is surprisingly uninteresting on the inside with fewer tables than one would expect. I imagined more sophisticated surroundings--perhaps a lounge in addition to a dining room--with a sleek decor. It's spaciousness is simply gobbled up by two bars (maybe intended as a sushi bar and an alcohol bar--only, no sushi makers anywhere), both of which appeared empty (except for staff who appeared to be working while sitting at the sushi bar) on a Saturday night. The layout is kind of weird--we were led through the small passageway in front of the cash register to be seated; it probably was the shortest route to the table, but.... I'd like to see the restaurant succeed as it fills a void in the neighborhood's offerings, but they seem to need some help with organization/decoration of space. It's got more of a strip mall vibe with cheapo tables and chairs scattered about, when it should have a cosmopolitan zen vibe with comfy booths and tables at each window to look out on the hustle and bustle of Prospect. Customers are greeted at the door by the traditional Japanese fabric flaps at face height, setting up an expectation of further exotic touches of zen that are just not there. The bar just inside has space in front of it for a few small high tops or some low sectional seating where folks could wait to be seated or meet for a drink. Overall a disappointment with obvious potential.
Casual yet classy
Izumis was a great place to get together with friends and family in a casual yet classy way. The food was excellent and always an adventure.
Excellent Japanese Cuisine.
A Japanese Restaurant that actually gives you what you pay for. After leaving California, to move here, I went to several "Sushi" places and found the sushi was more like a ball of rice with a paper thin slice of raw fish on top.... Quite disappointed. Decided to come here to check it out a few months ago and found a Diamond. This place actually gives you fair amounts of fish on top. The Menu is thorough and there are plenty of TRUE Japanese dishes on it, not some Korean / Japanese Fusion or some such. The food is DELICIOUS and takes me back to when I first started doing Japanese food in California. Hard to find a great Japanese food Restaurant in Wisconsin, but I have found the only one I will be going to. LOVE IT! PS, The bar tender really knows how to give you your moneys worth in the bar drinks also! Be careful if you are driving.
We came back for a second time (after not being wowed the first time) to see if this place was any better. First, we wanted to order appetizers - shumai and gyoza. Well, they were out of gyoza... at 7pm on a Friday. The shumai was very good though. Next came the maki rolls - we ordered 5 in total. I believe only one was REALLY good, I think it was the Shirokuma Maki, and the rest tasted bland. Even though their prices aren't too bad, there are much better sushi places in the area. Finally, the service was good and our waitress' recommendations were great, but I do expect you to be able to tell me which maki roll is which when you bring them to our table.
Disappointing night out
They were busy, so we were expecting to wait for our food. However, an hour after ordering an appetizer and sushi, we still hadn't received anything. When we asked our waitress, she gave us a puzzled look. Okay, so she forgot, mistakes happen. But we never received an apology and still hadn't gotten the appetizer when our sushi came out 10 min later. Rather than offering to comp the app, or even apologize for the delay, she simply asked if we wanted to cancel it since "they're taking forever." We hoped the quality of the food would outweigh the wait and poor service, but were disappointed - not great sushi (and we're traditional - no fancy rolls). When we complained, it took another 20 minutes for a manager to come over. Not recommended.
We had some of the best Sushi we have had in a long time on this visit. It was really excellent. We sat at the Sushi bar and also had great service.
The restaurant is celebrating its 21st anniversary and in celebration all food items are 21% off. We had a bunch of sushi rolls, miso soup, and a house salad. I will say I think the rolls could be a bit bigger, but they are very delicious. Miso soup here is excellent. Service is good; friendly and not hovering. I also appreciate when a sushi restaurant does not rush your sushi out to you. Good pace and nice atmosphere.
Good Japanese Food
We went out with a friend who had never eaten Japanese food before as well as family from Tokyo and we all enjoyed the food as well as the atmosphere. My Japanese daughter-in-law said some of the dishes were better than she's had in Japan.
