Isalita Ratings and Reviews
Great at the bar and in the basement
The food is just amazing. Authentic Mexican in Ann Arbor! Order the plantains, and the mushroom huaraches. Great vegetarian options.
Though the food was good (and it should be - it's not inexpensive) - it was impossible to enjoy as the din in the restaurant was so annoyingly loud. Members of our party had to shout to be heard - after awhile we gave up and left as quickly as we could so that we could enjoy dessert and conversation elsewhere.
Different take on Mexican
Worth trying. Mexican food with different means of creating spice including pickling. Wide variety of tapas. Server told our group that food is served as it is ready and sharing is encouraged. Made for a great way to try different foods and know what you prefer. Margaritas by the pitcher are very good. Not the typical limeaide mix. Pico and guacamole were quite good and chips well made, not too greasy. Food is good. Atmosphere lively. Service solid.
Great food, hostess needs mentoring.
Unfortunately, we got off to a rough start when the hostess, after seating us, told us we had to finish our meal within 90 minutes. While we were most likely going to do that anyway, it certainly is not a great way to treat your customers. Food and drinks were great. It's loud so soft talker need not apply...
Ask for the round table in the basement with a lazy susan. It works perfectly the small plates meant for sharing. It was a magical night and the food was delicious. Highlights were Banh Mi tacos and the nachos.

Everything we ordered was delicious. Our server gave us excellent recommendations. We will be back
Happy with food and drinks
Arriving right before happy hour was over was an advantage. The actual food did show a representation of true Mexican food and the taste was delicious. The only thing was missing from the menu was the sopes.
Good food ear piercing noise
We made the mistake of going to Isalita on a Friday night. The service was good the food was quite good especially mushroom quesedias and mahi mahi tacos. The margaritas were only fair, mostly ice and nothing special. The noise level however, was deafening . You had to yell to be heard by the person sitting net to you. Walking out to the street felt like heaven.

Love the food choices at Isalita. Great fresh Meican food. Nice ambience. Nearby location too.
fun and delicious
We had a great experience at Isalita and I would highly recommend it. We had a group of 8 and the server (sho was fabulous) just offered to choose some items for us to share from the menu. (it is simular to a small plates restaurant.) Everything she brought us was excellent and the entire group couldn't stop talking about what a great dinner it was. The chips and margaritas were about the best I've ever had. I had asked for a quieter area because I had heard that it could be loud and they placed us at a table that was perfect for communication. We can't wait to go back!
Great deal and selection for restaurant ...
Great deal and selection for restaurant week. Staff was really great with the increase in party size and accommodations. The more private table downstairs is really nice. Amazing service, cocktails, and food! We all shared guac, fish tacos, lamb tacos, and a few other things. Everything was incredible, can't wait to go back. Special thanks to Kyle for putting up with 9 crazy girls.
Closest thing to Latino food in AA
Great drinks and small plates. Delicious! A bit noisy and harder for conversations. But as an Angeleno, I found the food quite good!
I love this place. I think I like the decor the most but the food is also wonderful. It's my go to restaurant in Ann Arbor right now. It is really really loud though so if you sit in the general dining room you won't be able to hear well. I've sat in the basement with a large group and that was great, also went on a date here and sat at the bar which was better for one on one conversation.
Wish it were in LA
This was my second time here but only because I live in Los Angeles. My son lived down the street and it was one of his favorites. The food is authentic and the small plates allow you to try a lot of different things. My favorite is the crispy mushroom quesadilla. Los Angeles has a lot of great restaurants but it doesn't have an Isalita! Too bad.
Isalitas IS Mexico in Michigan
Homemade tacos, best margaritas since I was in Guadalajara, NO Tex-Mex refried beans and just the right amount of spices. Isalitas is definitely THE place for Real Mexican food around central Michigan.
Great small plate food!
Come with a group. This is a restaurant for sharing and the plates are small- one or two bites. The food was excellent, very tasty. The service was okay, but not that attentive. The food comes out slowly, one dish at a time so you need to be sharing or you won't be eating with the rest of the table. Very good food and we will come back!
Creeping to the top
Isalita is steadily rising to one of the top restaurants in town. Looking for GREAT flavor, great value, great service and a fun ambiance in the middle of downtown Ann Arbor, hit Isalita. The tuna tostadas are among the top dishes in town. The barbecue chicken flautas come with a sauce that is to die for. Shrimp ceviche is fun to dip into the whole meal. And the guacamoles are incredible--especially the bacon, goat cheese--yes it works!! It's tapas (small plate) style so it's ideal for friends looking to enjoy a perfectly paced evening out. You will NOT be disappointed.
Always a Fun Experience!
This is a unique Mexican restaurant experience. The food is inventive, fun and delicious. Sharing is a big part of the experience. We have visited many times with family and friends and have always walked away happy and satisfied. Starting with the hand-crafted cocktails, the experience is original. This last visit I ventured to try the Blood Orange Marguerita. It was NOT overly sweet and did not mask the taste of the tequila. Yum! We have enjoyed all of the small plate options as well. From the tuna to the chicken to the chorizo, you can't go wrong. Don't miss the esquites/elotes (delicious street corn served off or on the cob depending on the season). We'll be back!
Share share share!
The best suggestion we were given is to order for the table and share everything you get! Some things come in 3's but the waitstaff came have them prepared in 4's.
Food was excellent
The plantains side dish was particularly good. Fish tacos got rave reviews from our group. Meat and cheese quesadilla was also excellent.
High energy fun
Great menu with items to share, tapas style. Guacamole is delicious, pick de gallo amazing. Drinks are original and very yummy. Very noisy, so not the place to go for serious conversation.
Delish, Filling, Super Friendly
The food was delicious. They recommended 2 tapas/person, but we were full on even less than that. The hostesses were incredibly friendly, the waitstaff was helpful and engaging. A fun, vibrant atmosphere to take my family when they came to visit.
Good food but way too loud
I had hoped for a special birthday dinner but that was ruined when we were seated in the basement next to the loudest group of college students in Ann Arbor. The food was good but we couldn't wait to get out of there and spare our eardrums.
Finally, non boring Mexican food
Who says burritios need to weigh 5 pounds? Original, creative, fun. Total surprise. Fun to share.
Great Flavor in Small bites
The food is wonderful in both flavor and presentation. If you are a big eater it could get expensive. We there for restaurant week, $28 a person was the deal meal. Think it's a great place for groups. It's very noisy. We had a group with a baby sitting next to us. Not a place for quiet conversation.
Went for restaurant week for my first visit. Everything was great, from the service to the food. Great dinner choice in Ann Arbor. Interesting menu items, we dined family style and I can honestly say I liked everything we ordered. Host, server, bartender were all accommodating and friendly.
Went for restaurant week and enjoyed a wonderful lunch with portions that were easy to share. Beautiful presentation, yummy flavors and perfect portions. A delicious treat!
Restaurant Week Update
The course combinations offered during restaurant week were great as always. The goat barbacoa tacos were exceptional - perfectly done and succulent. As was one of my favorites - the chorizo queso fundido. The fun addition for RW was a bananas foster inspired plantain dessert which was heavenly. I hope they consider adding it to the regular menu.
Food was fantastic and everybody enjoyed everything they ordered. Only issue was that my main entree order was wrong. By the time I got my correct order, I had to leave to go back to work and didn't have time to enjoy it at the restaurant.
Mexican Small Plates
We were a family group of 10 including 4 children. We enjoyed the shared small plates of 'gourmet' Mexican food, all interesting & delicious. Children's menu choices are good. We were seated at a long table in a quiet lower level room with excellent service.
Still talking about it....
Went for our office Christmas lunch. The server was so helpful in suggesting small plates and drinks. The duck confit was off the chain delicious. Forest mushroom quesadilla was exceptional. Great atmosphere. Interesting decor elements. Will be back. And bring friends. :)
Mexican food that feels authentic.
Good food, decent service. Everything was a tad too salty for my taste, but both the corn soup and carnitas tacos were delicious.
Love tapas and sharing dishes
Love tapas and sharing dishes with others, and Isalita provides an interesting twist on tapas with their Mexican style rather than Spanish. There were 6 of us and we all enjoyed the various dishes and the sangria!
I have tried a number of times to go here but they don't take reservations for under 6 people, a real minus for us boomer ages. And it's so loud you have to yell to converse. So we tried to go early-to get a table and maybe it would not be so loud. The food is excellent, the margaritas wonderful and the service exemplary. Now if you would only take reservations !
I actually didn't realize that this was a small plate type restaurant before I arrived. I was slightly disappointed by this because the portions are pretty small for the cost. However, the food was amazing and we all really enjoyed it. It is a good place for a small group but probably not too large of groups. There were 4 of us and most of the items we ordered weren't large enough for each person to have a bite, so probably two or three people would be the best number. Otherwise you have to start ordering two orders of the items. The food really was great, but don't go there if you are on a tight budget.
If you love good food
It's loud, pretentious and over priced, but the food is amaZing.
Too loud for a group. Could
Too loud for a group. Could only hear people sitting immediately next to me.
The food was delicious. I'm
The food was delicious. I'm not a big fan of small plates though. The wait staff knew a lot about the menu. They cleaned our plates very quickly, which allowed for more food. They really seemed to push us out though which I understand because there were a lot of people waiting to trying the restaurant. I felt crammed in the restaurant though because they were trying to put as many people and tables into a smaller space. It was too loud and hard to carry a conversation. I did like the food though! somethings were a little too spicy for me though. I like Mexican and it will fit in well with Ann Arbor.
The food was very tasty, the
The food was very tasty, the server was excellent, and portions were a nice size. But the noise was so loud that the six of us at the table couldn't hear each other's conversation. It is doubtful therefore that we will ever go back.
We had a great experience
We had a great experience at Isalita's. The food was amazing and the service was great. I can't wait to try more dishes the next time we go.
