About Il Fornaio - Del Mar
Step inside Il Fornaio and take a culinary journey through Italy. Early mornings bring rustic, crisp crusted bread hot from the oven accompanied by the scent of fresh brewed espresso. During lunch and dinner hours, pastas and flavorful sauces simmer while meats and vegetables roast over hot coals. Bottles of wine from small, regional wineries are uncorked to complement the dishes, which have been crafted in the custom of Italy's chefs, bakers and homemakers. Specialties include wood-fired rotisserie and grilled meats, poultry and game; house made pastas; pizzas from an oak wood burning oven; fresh salads and house made soups; a wide variety of desserts; and fresh baked bread made daily from scratch. Winner of the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence 2007.

Il Fornaio - Del Mar Ratings and Reviews
I heard of this restaurant by recommendation as I am from out of state. Wife and I were celebrating 10 yr anniversary. The food and service was excellent! We also enjoyed the outdoor patio area with a view of the ocean and sunset. I will be recommending this restaurant for anyone traveling to San Diego area!
My son said it was the best pizza he ever had!!
Our meal was fantastic and the waiter was helpful and friendly. Food was served hot and quick on a busy Friday night

I appreciate that they have a separate gluten-free menu! And there was plenty for me to eat as a vegan as well.
Amazing Sunset and food
Food and view were amazing! great options for portions also so you don't have to stuff yourself Recommend the Pennoni Alla Vodka
Easter menu was so limited.
We were all disappointed at the food and service. We felt like this was a mistake. I guess maybe it's good for pizza, the pasta dishes were limited. Being Italian, I would never recommend this restaurant.
Always enjoy our meal/visit at Il Fornaio!
Great way to spend Easter Sunday! Continues to be our #1 Choice of destination restaurants.

Hit or miss
Dining at Il Fornaio can be very pleasurable, but it can also be very disappointing, and this seems true for every location we've visited (Coronado, Del Mar, Irvine and Beverly Hills). It also seems true whether the restaurant is very busy or not. Even the quality of the same dish can vary considerably. On the last occasion we dined, I ordered the "taste" of the regional specialty (Liguria) and really enjoyed each of the three dishes. But my dining partner had the linguine mare chiaro and found it terrible. At our Thanksgiving dinner, neither of us enjoyed what we ordered, but some of our dining companions did. On an occasion prior to that (about 3 months earlier), our food was delicious. We're not sure what to make of this hit or miss. The same problem occurs with the service. The last time we dined the service was average, but on other occasions it was outstanding. When it's good, it's very good, but when it's bad...
Excellent location, food and atmosphere
We really enjoyed this restaurant on a recent vacation in Del Mar. When the weather permits, outdoor dining with a view of the coast is exceptional. The food is excellent and the service was very good. This restaurant is definitely on our list, next time in Del Mar.
Excellent Italian restaurant with nice ambience and really good Italian food especially the pasta. Wonderful wine list with attention to good Italian wines. Superb service and a must stop if you are near Del Mar. Reasonably priced.
Dessert asked for birthday was not brought out
I liked it but the only problem was I had called to ask for a bread pudding to be provided as the birthday dessert and they had that in notes but it never came out :( So that was annoying!
Outstanding service; food not so much
This was our 5th visit to Il Fornaio Del Mar. Our server, Cassie, was pleasant, attentive and very efficient. My wife and I both ordered the Conchiglie Al Pollo--shell pasta, chicken breast, broccoli, sun-dried tomatoes. We found our meals rather dry (the pasta would benefit from more sauce) and the chicken was a bit too chewy for our tastes. We'll probably return to the restaurant in the future but found it not quite up to par this time around.
Il Fornaio always provides great food
Always consistently good, solid cooking. Excellent grilled items and fresh tasting ingredients.
Great dining experience with ocean view
I love this place. Beautiful views, you can shop in the nearby stores, great food, great service. We're making it a monthly dinner night spot!

Great location the balsamic filet was burnt. The carpaccio was very good.
I took my fiancé there for Our Valentine's Day dinner and everything was amazing. I was a bit hesitant of taking her here because our last experience wasn't so great, but I'm glad I gave it another chance. The calamari with spicy marinara is always my favorite. We had the fillet mignon which was good but our favorite was the homemade pasta with smoked salmon and shrimp. I would definitely ask for yesenia again to take care of us her service was exceptional.

Although we ended up enjoying our meal , I was initially disappointed to find their regular menu was completely gone and offered a Valentine Day's special menu instead. I had my heart set on a particular meal, but instead had to figure out something new, and a lot more expensive. So even though what I ended up with was ok, I was disappointed.
Dinner did not come until an hour later.

Celebrating 49th B-day and my 25th Wed.Anniv
My birthday is on Valentine's day and I secretly got married to my husband 25 years ago! Of course, being Hispanic only the church weeding is the one we count! That is on June 1st. You staff was pleasant, courteous, the food was amazing, the ambience let us feel that we were in the right place at the right time. The sunset! (I know that was part of your service! :) was unbelievable. The quality of food was exquisite....and the surprise desert with a candle was a great thoughtful gift. Thank you and I will see you again on June 1st!!!!
My girlfirend and I thoroughly enjoyed our night together at Il Fornaio. The decr set the mode of the evening for us. The stass was incredibly helpful with every question involving the menu. My girlfriend is gluten free, and the server was able to accommodate us in every way he could so that our night was enjoyable. The wine pairings were very much in unison with the food. We ended up eating a butternut squash ravioli and a gluten free pasta that both were presented eloquently along with tasting superb. Our server enhanced the night and made it a true memory for our San Diego vacation. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone in the Del Mar area looking for true Italian food. A gem of a place.
I always reserve a table at Il Fornaio for a special occasion. The food is delicious and authentic. The staff are incredibly affable and know just what you should order according to your unique taste.

We have dined here several times in the past Very disappointed this time Poor inattentive service No tablecloth Very noisy Food fair Calamari was horrible
There were a few large parties that night which is no excuse for our service to be horrible. Neither the waiter nor anyone else checked on us after delivering our food. My chicken was too dry. My friend asked for more marinara and was charged $1.95 on the bill, and was not informed of it ahead. We had 6 ladies in our party and none of us will return.
Good service. Bland Food. Poor value.
Service was good. Portion was big. Food is bland, including the olive oil. Don't know how they manage to produce such a tasteless food one dish after another. For the price, the nearby Pacific Del Mar offers much better value.
Excellent Service and Scenic View.
The food is very simple, it tries to be Italian but too far from the flavor; however is the same at all the other locations. The really good about this one is the actual view and the excellent service that they had.
We had an enjoyable restaurant week dinner and it was a good value. Our waiter was pleasant and professional. Our one quibble was that the hostess initially took us to a table on the porch right beside a the prep table and overlooking the parking entrance -- even though numerous better tables were available. We requested and got a better table, but we shouldn't have had to ask. We had a reservation and the restaurant never got crowded.
Product is consistent, always great service
I have always enjoyed this restaurant. It has a great view, the service is always spot on, and the food is always very consistent. It was a very quite day in the restaurant but they still stayed on top of there game.
Food was excellent
Food, service, and drinks were excellent. Try the veal, they're there all night.
Overpriced and poor quality
I got the surf and turf filet- my only did they not ask how I wanted the filet cooked, it came overdone and tough. They ran out of lobster on this dish and substituted shrimp for the same price. Very disappointed.
Noisy but good food
The outdoor patio was just crazy noisy. The tile floor help project sound so we spent evening shouting at each other. Food good, would have been nice to know a special menu was on for New Years' eve.

The ambiance and food was great, and it was a great evening with wonderful friends!
Christmas Eve Dinner
Generally a great place, however this Christmas Eve was over busy and even with reservations we were put at a very bad table by the bar tnder station. we did request a new table and were given one made up outside, the waiter was excellent, but other staff overlooked our table all night because it was not a regular table. the food is excellent as well and I would go back, but was disappointed this year with the whole experience and the outside tables don't have the ambiance and was beyond noisy.
Our family dines here every Christmas Eve as well as many other occasions. It has become our favorite family restaurant.
The food was great. View is beautiful. I told them it was my boyfriend's birthday on opentable when I made the reservation. I told the waitress again once we were almost done with dinner. It would been nice if someone recognized his birthday. Especially when it asks on opentable for comments in regards to your dinner reservation.
This restaurant is perfect for a romantic date with that special someone with a beautiful view at sundown.
This restaurant has a wonderful view of the ocean . Five of us ordered a different dish which was enjoyed. Next time we shall also order the pizza baked in the wood fired oven which was also a nice, generous size.
