Step inside Il Fornaio and take a culinary journey through Italy. Early mornings bring rustic, crisp crusted bread hot from the oven accompanied by the scent of fresh brewed espresso. During lunch and dinner hours, pastas and flavorful sauces simmer while meats and vegetables roast over hot coals. Bottles of wine from small, regional wineries are uncorked to complement the dishes, which have been crafted in the custom of Italy's chefs, bakers and homemakers. Il Fornaio means "the Baker" in Italian. This award-winning restaurant offers an authentic and unique Italian dining experience. Specialties include wood-fired rotisserie and grilled meats, poultry and game; house made pastas; pizzas from an oak wood burning oven; fresh salads and house made soups; a wide variety of desserts; and fresh baked bread made daily from scratch.

    Ordered, but then told that they were out of what we ordered. Then brought the wrong dish to the table. The salad was very good but the rest was just meh.

    As always the food was fabulous and the view of San Diego bay spectacular. For the most part our server was attentive. We will definitely keep going back.

    The food has always been consistent but over the last two years service has gotten worse. Last night may have been the worst yet. While the waiter thanked us for our patience once as we never complained, the service never changed after the waiter acknowledged that service was not up to par. While we likely will give it another try as we have been coming here since the restaurant opened many years ago.

    First rate restaurant in every regard. Regular plus special menu featuring a wide range of selections including seafood, pasta, beef. Salads are unusual and superb. A bit pricey but not exorbitant. Can be a bit loud. Excellent view of downtown San Diego. Service is always first rate. Reservations are often tight and not readily available, but OpenTable helps, along with advance timing. Staff are especially attentive to the needs of patrons with food allergies and sensitivities.

    We have eaten here a few times and usually have a great experience. Food is amazing!! However, last night our service was not great. We waited quite a while for our server to make her way over to us. She did not offer us bread to start which we normally receive. She did not offer our son a refill of her soda for the entire meal, she did not actually acknowledge us hardly at all. We will be back but will make sure not to be seated in her section again.
