Waited for 15 minutes at entrance and no one acknowledged our presence or sat us, despite ample available seating. Worst reception I've ever experienced, but in keeping with shoddy appearance of the premises. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME.

Will give it a 2nd chance
I was very disappointed after a great start to our meal which had a friendly welcome by the host and our order of sake and 3 appetizers. The food came out rather quick, within less than 15 minutes which was great. The restaurant was fairly empty when we arrived but was filling up quickly. We gave our waitress a sushi order which we filled in at the table and ended up waiting for almost an hour to get it. By then you could see many customer trying to get their checks, get seated and place orders. I was ready to just forget the sushi but decided to wait. It was obvious they were short staffed but it was disappointing to also see some mistakes on the bill and real trouble with them processing chip based newer credit cards. I loved the food but it was a painful dining experience.

"Mom and Pop" kinda place
This is basically a Mom and Pop shop. That said, it took quite some time (30-40 min.) for our food to arrive (our party of 5 ordered different combinations dishes). HOWEVER it was really well-worth the wait when it came! So, if you plan on going, prepare to sit back and relax if the food arrival takes a little bit longer than usual. You'll be glad you did! I will definitely return.
Good food, relaxed service
I've been here twice now. On both occasions we took the approach of ordering numerous appetizers from the sizable app portion of the menu and going at it family style. The dishes are all very tasty and appropriately priced. The only negative I can give is that on both nights the service started out as what you'd expect but quickly slowed and never improved. I like the food but when we're left waiting so long for food or to get any attention at all, it still leaves an impression. Go with extra time, and order a pitcher of beer so you can socialize for a while.
Great Japanese dining
Hatcho is a nice, local Japanese restaurant that serves excellently prepared food that tastes and looks great. I would recommend them for dinner any time.
Beautiful tasty food
It was fun to watch the food come out to our table and other tables. Each dish was beautifully presented. The fish (we are sushi and sashimi fans) was delicious and fresh. I think the service was having a bit of a challenging night. It took a long time to get someone to take our order, and food for our table of three didn't all come together. I had the impression from things we were told that this was not a typical evening.
We made reservations for 8 and had our own private room, which was nice. My daughters loved the food and the service was great, and the girls are hard to please. This is more authentic Japanese than just a sushi place, so do a little research before you get there so you're not just studying the menu
Tasty but small sushi rolls--
Sushi rolls were tasty but much smaller than what we usually receive. So, we ordered more. As we were leaving, a lady behind the sushi counter complained because my son, an 18 year old cross country runner, ate so much. You would think she would have been happy because we spent more money.
A hidden local place to eat...
A solid neighborhood choice for dinner. Very good food, reasonable prices and good service. We have eaten here several times and have not been disappointed at all. We will return.....

Very good Sushi !
Nice restaurant with a 29 years of experience in Santa Clara. Sushi was very good (not sure how authentic it really is, with some special rolls in the menu).
Not that good..
Went here based on the good reviews from open table, but confused why it got such good review after eating there.
Food is pretty good, but service is slow
The food is good or I can even categorize that as great. With my limited knowledge of Japanese cuisine, it is authentic. It also has some not-run-of-the-mill dishes. However, I have to say something about the speed of the service. The crew is friendly, but it took too long to take order, serve food, or take bill. From sitting down till the first dish is served, it is a little over 1 hour. The bottom line, if you are not in any hurry, the food will worth the wait. And, remember to bring someone with whom you have a lot to talk about. :)
Great food and service. Loved the small dishes of food that were great tasting.
great sushi, lousy service.
great sushi, lousy service, pretty much sums it up. I think there was a disconnect with OpenTable, the restaurant didn't have my reservation even though I had made it about 4 hours earlier. It went downhill from there. We were finally seated 40 minutes late, then spent 15 minutes trying to get someone to wait on us. We finally moved to the sushi bar and ordered there. The food was great, very fresh & tasty, but we had to inhale it as by then we were running late for a concert nearby. All in all they were very disorganized, I can't say I'd be willing to go back, too risky.
Good food, worth the wait
First thing you must know about eating at Hatcho, if you go on a weekend, or a busy evening, be prepared to wait, and have lots of patience, the wait staff cannot handle it when there are so many people. The boss lady, i think she is the only one who can take orders, so you have to wait until she gets around to you when the restaurant is full. There are at least two more support staff, but that is not enough when the restaurant is full or close to full, and they cannot take food orders, only drink orders i think so you have to wait for the boss lady. We really like the food at Hatcho, but like i said, if you go on a weekend or a busy evening, be prepared to have some patience, though it is worth it. Their cooked Japanese food is awesome, love their hamachi kama.
Best Japanese food in the Valley!
The owner, Linda, treats you very well and her staff are knowledgeable about every dish they serve. Good parking and decent price for cooked food and sushi.
original Japanese foods
If you would eat authentic Japanese foods not fusion Japanese, you should be in Hatcho. This restaurant really give you Japanese homy touch "Izakaya" style!
Having private room available makes relaxed dinner experience and excellent
Worst service ever!
It took us 20 minutes for them to get our drink orders even after getting up twice to flag somebody down. We seem to baffle the waitress by asking for separate checks. They seem to use salt rather than actually add flavor to any food. Our group would rate the sushi at the level of supermarket sushi. To top it off a couple hours after we left I received a call asking if I would give permission for them to charge me more because they did not charge me correctly for the sushi I had. I was astounded after the terrible experience they felt it was okay to call me because they didn't charge me six extra dollars. I could never recommend this place to anyone.
Nice Japanese food & Ambiance
A good place to have Japanese food & beer :) Ambiance is comforting & have traditional Japanese kind of seating arrangement.
Valentine's at Hatcho
This was my first time dining at Hatcho. I had heard very good thing about the place from friends that live in the area and was very excited to try it, especially on Valentine's Day with my significant other. Sadly, I was very disappointed. My SO ordered the Udon and I ordered the Sushi Plate Combo. The rice for the sushi was very mushy and tasted like there was too much vinegar added. The Udon was chewy like those store bought udon packages. Overall the food wasn't that great, the only redeeming factor of the night was how charismatic the sushi chef was. I told my friends about my experience and they were very surprised. Maybe they were just having an off night and I was just unlucky.
Very slow service, understaffed. The food was good; according to the Japanese person in the group it was like authentic "home-style" Japanese food. There was an extremely loud group in the next tatami room, taking sake bombs (wrong place guys, really), screaming, and banging on the walls. Staff apologized for the noise but couldn't stop it. We had a tofu appetizer, a "gasoline" bento, a selection of four small meals, some sushi, and assorted other food. All of it was very good; the teriyaki sauce was a little overly sweet but really yummy. The beer and wine was mid-grade but very drinkable. The price was average. We live nearby and my BF loves Japanese food so we'll probably go again, but overall we weren't knocked over by the experience.
price does not worth for food
there is a lot of alternatives which are much much much better than here.
The family and I had dinner on a Wednesday night. The service was amazing. The food was super tasty and the presentation was spectacular. We highly recommend giving them a try and dinning in the rice paper rooms! Tons of fun.
Authentic Japanese in Franklin Mall
What can I say? First-rate real authentic Japanese cuisine at excellent prices. The only even mild flaw with our meal was that food came out too quickly, not quite giving us time to enjoy each course. In spite of that, I thought it was a phenomenal meal. Hatcho will replace all of my other choices for Japanese in the South Bay. Why? Because it has outstanding fish to please the sushi lover and it has all the Japanese items anyone would like who does not want to have sushi or sashimi. Proof of the quality? Servers who speak Japanese and more than half the diners were Japanese speakers. That has to be a good sign. If I still lived in the area, it would probably be the only place I'd eat Japanese food or sushi.
best authentic japanese food
Hatcho has the freshest sashimi I have ever eaten in California. Tryout the tempura sea urchin. It's magnificent! The food is comparable to the cuisine that you would have in a Japanese inn in japan.
I will not recommend this restauran
I went to this restaurant because I want toro sushi. The restaurant does has very good toro sushi. This is the only food is good. The rest is not good. Service was very poor. When I told the waitress that I want toro sushi, she said someone has to take my order. I waited over 20 minutes for another waitress to take the toro sushi order. I told her I would like toro sushi and don't want spicy dish. she recommended a very spicy tofu dish. That was terrible. I did not eat it at all. My boyfriend packed the dish for the dogs. Also, after they served the food. No server has stop by to check on you - for water or tea. I waited so long for the bill, my boy friend and I walk up to the front desk and ask for it.
Great tasting sushi, soup. Menu goes beyond your typical sushi bar.
Overall it's very good, food
Overall it's very good, food is delicious. It's a small family style restaurant packed with customers. The decoration isn't super fancy, but the food is comparable to more upper-scale restaurants.
Had dinner with family and
Had dinner with family and everyone enjoyed their Food and the salmon sashimi was fantastic.
We loved our time at Hatcho!
We loved our time at Hatcho! Everthing we ordered was so delicious and incredibly fresh and beautiful! The service was excellent -- we had a reservation and they were very busy but everyone was treated graciously. My husband and I can't wait to go back for his birthday!
Authentic Japanese Cuisine!!!
For a simple Japanese restaurant where the ambiance is simple... the food is refined! Excellent quality ingredients, and personable service. Don't be fooled by the tired look to the establishment... if you give them a chance you will be delighted!!!
I love the sushi. It's fresh.
I love the sushi. It's fresh. The basic roll is ok
If the restaurant is busy
If the restaurant is busy service can sometimes be lacking and the orders might be backed up. We came when they were entertaining a large group so they explained to us that the kitchen was tied up, and service was fairly slow as well.
Hatcho is a my favorite sushi
Hatcho is a my favorite sushi restaurant in Santa Clara. The owners are warm and hospitable. There are some tatami dining areas, including a room with a western table for more private occasions. The food is VERY good. I ordered the chirashi. It was well presented (they take it up a notch with the use of Japanese lacquer plates) and the rice was perfect.
Amaebi is a must order
Very good authentic Japanese food. Really old fashioned and a little odd, but very typical of what you'd find as a family run restaurant in Japan itself. Come for the food, not the decor. Their deep fried tofu appetizer doesn't sound like much but it is fantastic.
