By far this is the best sushi (actual traditional quality sushi) in the North Bay.

Beautiful new lounge/bar area will bring me back

Dined on April 14, 2016

We sat in the lounge bar area on a week night so I think the very nice bartender did as best she could waiting on us (the only two in the lounge area) as well as the guests at the bar. Because there was a bit of a tag-team effort bringing our food and essentials we sat for a while with no utensils, then no napkins, and then when I asked the busses on her third trip if I could have some water she huffed and said 'would I like anything ELSE?!" as if it was my fault that all these things weren't brought in one trip. All and all the food was great and I love the beautiful modern chic new space. I will be back with more friends.

Remodeled and one year ago. Raised prices.

My lunch cost was too expensive from comparable Japanese restaurants in the area. I might not return for a lunch due to price increase. Possibly return for dinner.

Best Sushi in Northern California

Dined on March 28, 2016

I've been coming to Hana for nearly 20 years now, not as often as i would like. I trek out from Oakland, where i've been living for the past 15 years, because this place is so good. I have probably tried 20 sushi places in the Bay Area, and not a single one was as good as Hana, in my opinion. Ken is a fascinating, dedicated, fun-loving master. Lately i haven't seen him behind the sushi bar the way he was in years past, but he's still there most times i am. This past visit, he worked the floor to greet tables briefly and deliver the exquisitely prepared "happy spoon" i'd ordered, while wearing a simple sweater and pumas soccer shoes.

I have eaten at Hana numerous times over years and have always enjoyed the quality of my meal and service. I don't like navigating the menu, which I find somewhat confusing. The price of my meal has become higher and although the quality of the food may justify it, I'm unlikely to continue to choose Hana again in future, at least for sushi or sashimi.

A surprise in Santa Rosa

vip
Dined on March 8, 2016

Hands down, the best sushi I've had this side of Tokyo. Everything was first class. Miso soup was clearly homemade. Sushi rice was perfectly seasoned and prepared. Toro was the real thing (imported from Spain) and not the usual cheaper substitute. Bento box was a delight. The list of fish was surprisingly long (e.g., both local and Japanese urchin). Service was well informed and, being in wine country, there were excellent by-the-glass wine offerings. Easy access from 101 if you're traveling through Santa Rosa. This isn't your usual strip mall joint, so reservations are recommended during peak hours.

Not as impressed the second visit

Dined on March 6, 2016

This is my second time to this restaurant. The first time I went with a rather large group after a performance at the Green. I was impressed enough with my food and others' food to try it again. I will state, however, that they do not particularly cater to large groups. We were asked to pre-order from the Web menu which was confusing and incomplete, and they would not do individual checks so many people ended up overpaying for what they ordered when we split the bill by the number of people. We were not told in advance that even though we pre-ordered, they would not issue individual checks. This second visit I shared three items with a friend who had been with me on the first visit. First, we had the calamari salad. It was good, but not as good as it looked the first visit. Next we had a fish that was supposed to be a main course dish. For the price the portion was very small. Also, one of the sides was a portatoe salad that neither my friend or I wanted to eat after tasting it. Lastly, we had udon soup. It was a rainy night, and soup sounded good. In every other restaurant where I have ordered udon, it has always been a large portion - enough for a meal. This was a very small portion for much more money than I usually pay for udon. Also, it would have been nice for them to split it into two bowls for us knowing we were sharing, but instead we had to deal with trying to get udon noodles into separate bowls with a fork which our server was nice enough to provide. I had a small sake, and my friend did not order anything to drink. However, the tab with tip was still over $80 for three items shared by the two of us, and I left hungry. I don't think I will return.

Quality lacking after restaurant remodel

vip
Dined on January 11, 2016

Hana used to be one of our favorite restaurants. After the restaurant remodeled, we noticed the quality of the food and service have gone down. The cooked dishes are salty. New servers are not trained well; we ordered hot tea and got hot water. The server apparently did not let the tea steep before pouring it. We hope it's just a transitional phase for Hana. They do have fresh sushi and some of the best tamago.

Hana is getting more expensive and portions are getting smaller, you walk away hungry or you pay a hefty price to eat more. Not sure I'd go back, except for a special occasion and would be more selective on what I order. And we've been going to Hana for decades!

Attended for their annual Holiday specia ...

Dined on December 28, 2015

Attended for their annual Holiday special prix fine meal, our 2nd year attending. Different format this year ... Instead of dedicating entire restaurant for a single night or weekend for this special event, they offer it over a longer period and patrons can choose to use the regular menu or the special. We chose the special. It was enjoyable overall, and as always with impeccable service in delightful surroundings ... but the menu wasn't quite as thougtfully put together as last year's ... perhaps because they seemed to decide rather late whether they were going to do it at all. The amuse course was the highlight, a scrumptious spoon of uni, raw oyster & various roes. The sashimi and Nigiri courses were also very fine, the raw Alaska crab leg being a wonderful new discovery ... but these two courses were not so different in the spectrum of possibilities and taste profiles, and were the two courses that were most traditional. Alas, they somehow seemed obliged to appeal to the surf - and - turf crowd with a Wagyu beef course which was unremarkable except for the burdock flakes. The dessert, a cake roll with red bean cream needed a stronger red bean flavor; a shade too subtle. A tofu & soba dish and a mushi course with mushrooms were quite nice. Overall an excellent evening and a tradition I'd hope t hey continue.

Sensational

Dined on November 29, 2015

Who would have thought the best sushi in Northern California - and arguably the best we've had in California - is in Rohnert Park? We've eaten sushi throughout the world, and also extensively in Japan. This is the real deal. Rice, not sweet and longer grain. Even the non-sushi items (Tokyo-style karaage, red miso soup) were terrific. Can't recommend this place more highly. A highlight of our trip.

Average Sushi Restaurant

vip
Dined on November 13, 2015

We had to go to Santa Rosa on business and decided to stop here mainly because it was listed on Open Table. The food was just okay, not super special but the fish was fresh. The nigiri was cut a bit small and the roll we ordered was okay. The service was slow as there was only one wait person for the entire restaurant and the dishes came out at a slow pace as well. Probably the best Japanese restaurant in the area so if you crave some fish, this is the place.

Excellent food. Pricey but worth it. Beautiful presentations. My 9 year old daughter loved it. Sat at the bar and chef Taka took great care in explaining what fish was in season and setting us up with the best experience. It was my daughters birthday and she said after we got home that it was one of her best life experiences.

Dined on October 24, 2015

Having been to Hana many times before, I was not disappointed at all. The sushi and other dishes were great, fresh and tasty. When we expressed some interest in Sake, the sake sommelier came to our table, talked to us about out preferences and brought a couple of sakes to taste. Sadly, it turns out we are not sake lovers, but he was very gracious about the experience! I could eat there every week, and sometimes I do!

Tempura was soggy :(

Dined on October 14, 2015

My family and I always look forward to eating at Hana when we're in town. But this last time, the food was disappointing. I ordered the tempura prawns and although the portion size was generous, the tempura batter was soggy. Also, the little dish of tiny vegetables they give you before dinner tasted almost like they'd gone bad ( not the pickled ones; those were good) so I didn't eat more than one bite. We are from Seattle and eat a lot of Japanese food out so we know what's good. Unfortunately, this time wasn't one of them.

Great sushi, bad MSG

Dined on September 20, 2015

I have enjoyed this restaurant many times, but this last time was really bad because the cook was very heavy handed with the MSG. I woke up with my eyes almost swollen shut the next day. I recommend the sushi. It is very fresh and delicious. I am suspect of everything else. Everything tasted so good, like too good, so I think there was a touch of MSG in everything. I am bummed because this has been my special occasion place, but now I am not comfortable recommending it because so many people I know are extremely sensitive to MSG. Too bad.

Food is pricey for what you get. We spent almost $80 on lunch for two. Two Green Teas, Kukuni Pork Belly Ramen, Poke & Tempura Bento, three orders of Nigiri..Saba, Yellowtail, and Big Eye Tuna. The fish was fresh but small slices. Service was very good while side rooms are loud as you hear conversations from the end of the room. Decor reminds you of a modern office building and not a restaurant.

Dined on September 14, 2015

The very best sushi and sashimi we have had on the west coast. On a par with O-Ya in Boston but without the sometimes silliness that one an find there. A purists Japanese restaurant, with a vibrant chef-owner front and center on the sushi bar, and great servers, knowledgable bar staff, and a lovely atmosphere. You cannot beat this. It will not be cheap, but it will be awesome!

Amazing. This was one of the best Japanese restaurant experiences we have ever had and we have eaten in a lot of Japanese restaurants. I almost hate to tell you about this restaurant because it will only get more and more popular and it will be harder and harder to get a reservation. But they deserve the accolades.
