Love to cook meats

Always love this place. Can't wait to go back
My boyfriend and I ordered maybe 10-15 different items to try out one night. The miso hanger steak was the best choice of meat we had that night; so tender it melted like butter! The bibimbap was very yummy. And we loved the garlic spinach and mushrooms. Peach and lychee saketini were delicious. Overall a great tasty night.
Service has gone downhill
I love Gyu-Kaku, but this particular time dining here was terrible! It took us an hour to get an order of calamari, and I'm not exaggerating. Nobody even came by to check on us, we had to flag people down repeatedly and ask for things and remind them what we were waiting for. All of the food was good, it always is, but everything just took way too long. The Sherman Oaks location is much better in terms of service.
Best texture of beef served in town
Best texture of beef served in town. Texture? Yes. When I see that, I know. The lean and the fat together that presented an attractive look to me. I felt the melting of it in my mouth--the angus beef. The Kalbi, too. We dined there for the Happy Hours Weeks running currently in Pasadena. The beef at Gyu-Kaku tasted better and costed less than that of its rival in the area. I love Gyu-Kaku except for that it changed the membership program in late 2014 that resulted in that I could not earn membership points as lack of a smart phone so I seldom dined there since then. The dine is less value without the membership earning,

It wasn't even a busy night and service wasn't very good. Waitress never came by; we had to flag her down repeatedly.

Meh... It was OK. The garlic noodles are good. You have to cook your own meat and our grill was giving us issues. Only one side of it was working.

This was our first time there. Our waitress advised us to try one of their dinners for two. There were 4 of us and we were going to order two dinners for two, but she said that one would probably be enough. We ordered an extra bipimbap and that was perfect. Very helpful staff, great food will definitely return. It was a fun place to dine.

The place was very nice, the food was tasty, and over all very good. The service was slow and half our food was slow in coming out. A large party came in and we seemed to have been forgotten.
Food and service declining steadily
I've been here 2 times and each time both quality of food and service has been declining steadily. All of the food is very salty this time. The host wasn't very engaged in service and chatted away happily while we waited 45 mins for our table. Despite arriving 30 mins prior to our 4:45pm reservation, we weren't seated till 15 mins after our reservation and it was very ok and no big deal to the two girls at the front desk. Service at the table wasn't much better. Had to wait about 10 mins for the server to show up, another 10 mins for the fire to be properly turned on (didn't do this until we asked about the spinach that was still completely raw despite being on the fire for 10 mins), asked for extra napkins from one of the servers and it was forgotten, and didn't get any sort of apologies on any of the above. Management needs to seriously get their act together here.
Awesome date night
I booked a table here for my husband and I to celebrate an early Valentine's Day dinner. It was such a wonderful evening. The choices of meats and vegetables was outstanding. It took us awhile to decide as the menu was very comprehensive, but our waiter helped us with what to order and he was right about everything. We had such a fun evening, we decided that this is going to be our new "go to" place for celebrations! Thank you!
i've been here a ton. i actually went this time to fuel up for a marathon. the carbs (rice) and protein (meat) are delicious, well priced, and filled me up. service was good. great lunch specials.
Awesome happy hour prices- the gyoza dumplings and sukiyaki bibimbap are my two favorite items there! I also enjoy the yakishabu meat, cooks quickly and very tasty.
The food was good I really liked it. Nice place for my birthday
Has been great each visit. Staff is always helpful and willing to explain items on the menu. Even when I ordered an incorrect item and it was my mistake, wait staff corrected the problem at no extra charge.
Fun way to eat!
Great fun grilling our own food! Fast, friendly, attentive service. The lunch choices were priced right and had a good selection. No bad choices. Highly recommend.

We had excellent service with special individual attention and care.Great food and ambiance. Thanks.
Very expensive for a Korean BBQ. You pay for each plate of meat which is good for one person so you will need to order a lot. Can be pricey.

Our waiter was great and showed us the ropes since it was our first time there. We got to try virtually everything with the DineLA experience. We will definitely be coming back.
It's REALLY annoying to have the help yelling in Japanese very time they pass your table ! You need to be open later and serve SUSHI ! Your happy hour needs to start sooner that 9:30 PM on a Saturday night. It should start at least by 8 pm, you'll sell more longer !
Overall great experience
The whole experience was great. The food was really good, but the yaki shabu beef ended up being so fatty that it burned. Unfortunately, it also seemed that our table had a faulty station, which meant it would take a while for it to spark up.
The beef short ribs were the best. Service was good quick to get food. Drinks promptly refilled. Hope to be back soon...
Don't run out of food!
Upon dining at Gyu-kaku this weekend we were very disappointed in the number of items they had run out of.
We booked a table at 7pm. We checked in 15mins early, the reception said it will take 10mins to prepare the table. We ended up waited 30mins. The food is okay but we will avoid going there.

BBQing your own food and the smores made for a fun dinner date
Gyukaku is the place to go for a great experience of Japanese BBQ. I love the variety of the menu and how yummy all of them all.
A friend and I selected this restaurant because it was on the DineLA Restaurant Week list. This is place is amazing! The selection of food and the value for what you get can't be beat! The menu is extensive and everything we had was delicious. You must try the Bibimbap as part of the selection - so yum!!!

Great Place for Lunch
I came here for lunch and it was not as busy as I expected. Never less it was perfect for lunch during the week. I recommend.
Staffing and Mgmt
This review reflect my visit on 1/1/2016 1:20PM. Normally I visit this location during my lunch time on weekdays considering I work in the area. It only have about 2-3 tables of people and staffing seems right. However during my recent visit, I noticed they're much busier, I understand it is New Years day, which I would expect them to staff more people for such an occasion. They seemed understaffed and it took me 2-3 request to ask for some items as simple as lemon, paper napkins, spoon and plate for the ice cream. I would never short change a waiter's tip because of issues like this because the poor guy or gal probably has 2x or 3x amount of tables assigned to them, thus I blame this to the management for having a wrong forecast for the schedule of staff. I hope this doesn't happen to someone else or anymore.
Japanese BBQ at it's Best
I tried Gyu-Kaku in Pasadena about 10 days ago and was blown away by the food and the total experience. So after only one week, I went back. I ordered different items each visit, yet the food was amazing both times. We normally go to a sushi location nearby, however I think I will add this to the rotation of top restaurant choices in Pasadena.

I've been to this restaurant several times and each time I have an amazing experience. The food is filling and is ideal for conversation, not over eating, and an awesome memory!
Fun and Tasty
Third time here. Great smoky aroma in but not so strong that it permeates your clothes for the rest of the night. I always think places like this charge too much for food you cook yourself. But I guess that's the charm. In any case, the food and service was good. There's other places that give you a lot more for a lot less but you'd have to drive to K-town. So nice little niche they got here! Make sure to get the app and scan your receipt at the end to get points that you can use to get free food on your next visit!
Food was good. Lacked customer service.
The food, although it came out quite late, was good. We had virtually no waiter service. Our meat selection came out before our beverages. Our appetizers were brought at the very end and only when asked as to the delay, we were informed of a kitchen issue. Overall the food is good but we will probably choose a different location based on the poor customer service.
I've been to other Gyu-Kaku's in the past but it was my first time at the Pasadena location. What was disappointing is that they like to turn the fire really high, sometimes without your knowledge or consent... And regardless if I'm following their instructions of "one minute per side"... 85% of my meat was burned to char. Once this happened for the second time, I turned down my fire for my third plate of meat... But it happened again because our server turned up our heat again without us noticing. It was just disappointing because the portions are small to begin with.. And then most of it was burned so it was such a waste.
great for happy hour
great place for a group, especially with happy hour pricing (the food and alcohol is discounted). the service can be slow when busy.
Great lunch specials
The lunch specials are an excellent value. The upgrade rice to the bibimbap is a delicious deal. Although some of the toro beef was a little tough to chew.
