Whiskey Bread! And everything else

Dined on December 14, 2013

Gwynette St. was a wonderful dining experience. The service was outstanding, and our waitress gave the best recommendations! The Whiskey Bread, to start, is one of the highlights. Lathered with butter or dipped in sauces, the bread is truly outstanding in both taste and consistency. I recommend keeping some for later to dip in the left over sauces of the following courses. For appetizers we had the Pig Ear and the Celery Root. Both had incredibly unique tastes, the highlight perhaps being the egg-yolk-celeryroot-almondsauce combination. Finally, the Duck with red beet spaetzle should be ordered by everyone who walks in. Overall, everything was done very well, and not overdone, as is the case with a lot of upscale restaurants.

Great ambience, good food

Dined on December 8, 2013

Dined at Gwynnett St's in dec 13, the place is a restaurant bar, with nice warm ambience. Jazz music in the background, brick walls, tables sufficiently spread apart relative to ny standards. I rode from Manhattan (convenient 3 L line stops from Union to graham) to a pleasant dining experience and was happy with the choice. Food is well prepared and very well presented. Menu is concise following the one-word-description now in fashion, that leaves an element of surprise but waiters were prepared to explain the details and the surprise was consistely on the positive side in our case! We had beef and deck, both extremely well cooked. Budget around 85 bucks 2 courses, glass of wine, dessert. Pleasant place, fancy but not stuck up.

The Hype is Just That...

vip
Dined on December 1, 2013

We came from Manhattan after hearing the hype and reading the reviews. The service was lovely, casual and attentive. The menu too sparse... only 6 appetizers and 6 entrees... not very satisfying but we made the best of it but found the food overly ambitious. Someone was trying too hard when creating the menu. The chicken in ash was tasty but the entire dish was lacking. The scallop appetizer lacked flavor. The pig's ears were like pork cracklin's in something. Nothing meshed. I mean, it was all okay, but you couldn't say, "wow. This is not a worthy contender to the likes of Dressler," in Williamsburg. But, hey, the tables were full - so what does that say? It says, maybe it's just the hype.

Great experience!

Dined on November 24, 2013

I celebrated my husband's birthday here. This was our first time and I made the reservations based on the reviews. We were not disappointed, the meal was delicious and we had great service. Some of the ingredients on the menu are unusual, but the tastes all come together. The duck was amazing and very hearty. The appetizers are on the lighter side, the scallops seemed skimpy and not that flavorful, however the pig's ear appetizer and the raclette were big hits and very filling. The whiskey bread is worth paying for. We will come again and maybe even try the tasting menu. For this occasion we stuck with the duck and we were very happy.

Interesting food, very trendy.

Dined on November 17, 2013

Interesting food, very trendy. Thought our main courses were delicious, but the appetizers tried too hard. A salad of sunchokes with scallop and seaweed was cold and slimy, tasting like something found on the beach. But main courses very good. Desserts: peanut, pear, banana or parsnip--trying a little too hard. Wonderful service--waitress great at explaining everything.

Great to have in Brooklyn

Dined on November 10, 2013

I am very impressed with this restaurant. The food was innovative, and incredibly tasty and in reasonable portions (read that as I was able to walk out comfortably as opposed to being overstuffed). Our waiter was knowledgeable and attentive without being overly so. The exposed brick walls really don't give you a hint of the food experience to come- when we walked in we wondered if we were in the place that had received such rave reviews- it deserves every one of its positive reviews. I will definitely be going back

Best chicken dish

Dined on November 10, 2013

Overall, the food experience was good but frankly too expensive. The chicken entree was the best I've ever had though, but the steak was only average if even that. This is a restaurant that you go to once, maybe twice. A very limited menu with am average atmosphere.

Happy Face

Dined on November 8, 2013

As in, made my face happy. We got the 7 course tasting menu with wine pairing and it kinda turned into 9. The wines that were paired with each dish went very very well, and each dish came out perfectly timed with the last. I highly recommend the tasting menu, and the wine pairings are a great deal.

wonderful restaurant

Dined on October 31, 2013

Absolutely delicious food. It has hidden flavors that pop up in delicate explosions in different morsels. Great combination of ingredients which I cannot even tell what they were, but work very well together. Congratulations to the chef. All three courses from the appetizer to dessert where an adventure. Small portions but enough to give you a very satisfying culinary experience. (I sound like I am one of the owners! - but I am not). The place was not too crowded on Halloween night, probably because of that or because it is somewhat removed from the "hot" street in Williamsburg, but I hope that it has enough patrons to survive because it is a wonderful restaurant.

We splurged as it was for a birthday and went for the tasting menu along with wine pairings. The service was impeccable, well timed and the wine served quality and a excellently paired. The tasting menu was a delight. One of the best valued tasting menus I have experienced in many years. The food was fresh, perfectly prepared and exciting, The chef is a genius. Well recommended.

Simply amazing experience overall. Exceptional service - very attentive and professional. Wonderful craft cocktails, and a tasty boneless quail appetizer that was perfect for two. Dinner was Ocean Trout and Cubed Flank Steak - both were wonderful though the steak stole the show. Desserts were both good but the Peanut was fantastic. The Sweet Potato dessert was colorful - beautiful presentation, really - but the taste was a bit muted. Excellent coffee at the finish.

Almost Lives up to the Hype

Dined on October 27, 2013

Everything we ate was very good, but our dessert fell flat. The service was great; after one of the runners mistakenly cleared my cocktail from the table before I was finished, the server brought me another gratis. The pig's ear salad and scallop appetizers were excellent!

Don't Miss Out!

Dined on October 27, 2013

This place may be tucked into the 'other side' of Williamsburg, but it's a gem nonetheless. The food was thoughtfully prepared, well balanced and executed perfectly. Our server was incredibly knowledgeable and took the time to discuss menu items with us as we tried to make our selections from great options. Whatever you do, don't skip the whiskey bread...phenomenal! If you enjoy a well-made cocktail, this is the place for you. The drinks are well designed and also made properly. I've seen many good drink ideas flop on execution, but not here. Overall, I would say it's a must try for the food and upbeat, yet classy atmosphere.

We live in the neighborhood

Dined on October 26, 2013

We live in the neighborhood and have been meaning to come to gwynett st. for months, and I'm so glad that we finally did! The service was great and our waiter gave us great recommendations. Great atmosphere: tables are far enough apart from each other so that you don't feel like you are having dinner with the couple next to you and I love the exposed brick walls. Everything we ate was really delicious, the stand outs from our meal were the whiskey bread, quail appetizer, and the duck entree - all were amazing! Their specialty cocktails list is well rounded and the whiskey ones we had with dinner were really good. We will be back both to dine and to have drinks at the bar and are looking forward to trying the chef's tasting menu.

Not for me

Dined on October 21, 2013

I was exited to give it a try. Many friends had raved about it. l left feeling very blah and slightly confused. I did not enjoy my food. FOOD: Not my cup of tea. It was well presented, fresh ingredients are used but lacked flavor. The whiskey bread was amazing! It was the only thing I enjoyed though. I'm not a fan of chefs that use obscure ingredients just for the sake of using odd ingredients which is what it seemed like. The 3 courses of food I had left an odd "health food market" flavor in my mouth. If you enjoy eating roots and leaves in there purest form than this is your place. GREAT SERVICE. The woman that sat us was charming. The waiter was friendly and more importantly very knowledgeable and well informed.

Excellent food, poor wine pairing

Dined on October 19, 2013

I went to Gwynnett with my husband for his birthday and overall we really enjoyed it. The food is outstanding and they have a nice wine list. We decided to take the chef's menu, which is $85 ($120 with wine pairing), and asked the waiter's advice with regard to the pairing: he said that the pairing is made with the wines offered by the glass, by definition not particularly good (!). He suggested to go for a nice bottle instead. When we pointed out that we wouldn't know whether to order red or white (they don't tell you what's on the menu) he said he didn't know what to tell us... We obviously ended up ordering a la carte and were extremely impressed by the taste of each plate we ordered. Still, they should offer an appropriate wine pairing!

The parsnip desert was also outstanding...as well as the whiskey bread....ate all of this as well plus consomme, tasted all my friends food...plus 2 Mr. Pink cocktails and didn't even feel grossly full!!! Always a sign of GOOD food.....****

Outstanding food &great service!

Dined on October 8, 2013

We (3 friends) really enjoyed our evening at Gwynnett St. Relaxed-chic atmosphere, warm and caring team and great, great menu.We tried: - the whiskey bread, served nicely sliced &lukewarm. Perfect texture, not to dry not to doughy, really good! 1 is enough to share for 3 peeps. - starters : pork w peaches&ricotta and quail w chestnut &sweet potato. Exactly as it sounds : delightful ! Nice proportions, beautifully dressed &SO tasty! - mains : duck w fennel, mushroom&plum : honestly, the best duck I've ever tasted (and I'm French.) served gently rose, tender, savory. The fusion of the the 3 tastes in mouth was unbelievably good!! ; Chicken w lemon&carrots : really nice summer taste, gently grilled and juicy, really good too! Just go there!!

Inventive but approachable dishes

Dined on October 3, 2013

This was our second time dining at Gwynnet St and we were not disappointed. While admittedly, we had to google half the items on the menu, we both wound up with meals we thoroughly enjoyed. The flavors were sophisticated and blended well. The chef at Gwynnet is truly innovative. We also love that it's so close to our apartment. We will definitely be coming back.

We had a lovely meal. It was a bit difficult at times to decern what we were actually eating. The flavor profiles were truly outstanding, I just wished for a bit more insight into what was on my plate. Our server was very sweet, but she only checked in with us about the courses once they were cleared.

Don't do it.

Dined on September 17, 2013

The evening was going well, then one dish on the tasting menu was so bad, such a complete mis step that my partner and I both found ourselves unable to eat it. The miso glaze was awful, just awful. The rest of the dish had undercooked shell beans and chips of dried yadda yadda... The whole dish was bad -- bad ideas poorly executed. What was worse than the dish was the way the chef and management handled it. They didn't address it in any way or make any adjustment on the bill. They're only offer was to give us another dish, which at that point in a tasting menu was an unwelcome offer. For me, this is unacceptable. Our bill was over three hundred dollars and the food was unexceptional. The decor is lower than unexceptional.

Welcoming Williamsburg Eatery

vip
Dined on September 15, 2013

Great atmosphere with tables were spaced out well in the dining area. The noise level was perfect. There were plenty of high tables in the bar area. Inventive cocktails using interesting ingredients like Chartreuse. We had the Mr. Pink cocktail. Food: The whisky bread was both sweet, moist with a crunchy crust making it worth the $5 price point. Sweetbreads were decadent but balanced. The pork, ricotta & cilantro was fine but not my favorite. Mains were the duck and chicken. The chicken was outstanding. For dessert it was creative in texture, visual and taste. The grapefruit dessert was balanced between tart & sweet. Service: Attentive but not overbearing. Cost: Moderate If in the neighborhood I would return for drinks or dinner.

We were a bit disappointed

vip
Dined on September 14, 2013

We were a bit disappointed by the following: - The look on the waiter's face when we didn't order appetizers. Not everybody wants to have a three-course meal. Especially since the whiskey bread is so filling. - The size of our mains. They were particularly small. If we had known, maybe we would have ordered appetizers. - The staff should know (or go ask) about amount of dairy in the desserts... After asking for the best non-dairy option on the dessert menu, my husband still ended up with a dessert that was over half-dairy and could not eat most of it. Having said that, the food was excellent.

Dined on September 14, 2013

Great experience at Gwynnett St. Delicious, interesting, intelligent food served in satisfyingly sized portions. The chicken was incredible, the duck was flavorful but a bit tough. Definitely order the whiskey bread to start. Like a sweet, dense biscuit, crispy and crumbly outside and soft inside. Pricey, but not excessively so. I didn't feel like I spent more than I should for what I got.

Gwynnett Street Wows!

Dined on September 13, 2013

From the warm welcome up front to the spectacularly prepared and presented plates, Gwynnett Street wows on many dimensions. The tasting menu ran the gamut from a vegetarian delight to a luscious rib-eye. The first half of the menu was especially great...the tender and flavorful sweetbreads were worth the trip alone. The wine parings could not have been better, including a delightful find from Long Island. Run, don't walk, to Gwynnett Street.

Not just a meal -- an experience!

Dined on September 11, 2013

I absolutely love this place. Ask your waitperson to describe the dishes. Everything is prepared in the most innovative way, with fresh, often local, high quality ingredients. If you love experiencing tastes (and textures) for the first time, you will thoroughly enjoy your meal. It's great fun when you're in a group (though six is the maximum here, I believe) and folks can sample each others food, and compare notes, etc. The desserts are hard to describe, but like nothing I've had before, and just amazing. I had one titled simply "Grapefruit" on the menu. It was actually an extremely complex collection of various forms of grapefruit and fennel, including candied, dried, sorbet, etc. The service is discrete, professional, attentive.
