Dad's 60th Birthday
We took my dad there for his 60th birthday, it was our 3rd time there. As usual, the food was great. I had the schweinbraten (pork shoulder and loin) that just fell apart it was so tender. The beer list is made for a beer snob, with a wide selection of import draft, and bottles. The service is great, they're attentive without being in your face about it. The decor is beautiful, open beams in the roof, chandeliers, warm "ambiance"... cozy enough to feel like home, yet pretty enough for date night. Overall, a great experience, if a tad pricey (but, you get what you pay for).

First time there, and very authentic, was like I was in some of my favorite Viennese restaurants (in Vienna).

Great place to take family for a special occasion. The food was excellent, the restaurant is beautiful and the staff was friendly.
Short version: Excellent "Germanic" cuisine that is a nice break from your typical KC restaurant. Longer version: 5 of us met for dinner, with only 1 of us being at Grunauer before. I was "coached" by one of my managers who is from Germany and read the menu before we met in the restaurant. All of the food was excellent - we gave it 10 thumbs up. Our server was attentive but not overbearing and gave great recommendations. Trout, bratwurst, steaks, goulash - all were hits. Yes we would go back. 4.5 stars.
One of my favorite places
We go here often. The bartender is accomplished. The wine list is unique and can satisfy every palate. The food is always excellent.
We were looking for German but found Austrian and thoroughly enjoyed our ethnic adventure!
Good not great
Having grown up in the Munich area, I would say the pork roast was good, Cabbage was bland and boring, dumpling was good. Service was good, friendly and attentive at the right level. Nice atmosphere, but a little pricey for the product.
My girlfriend and I came to celebrate our 1 year dating anniversary because it is one of our favorite places to go. We are obsessed with the schnitzel and potato cucumber salad. The beer list is great, and the cocktails are some of the best around! A must for anyone who likes traditional Austrian or German cuisine.
Always a great decision
Grunauer has become one of our favorite restaurants. It has a great menu offering many Viennese standards along with German and other Euro-fare. I find that their food is very accessible for any amount of daring. The beer and wine lists are both great as well. For anything from romantic to group outings, this place will accommodate. I will be dreaming about my Rostbraten for the next week.....

Very knowledgeable staff, great food. They seemed understaffed. Our waiter didn't come back for drinks very often.
Great for a business meeting
Excellent authentic food. Tables are nicely spaced and the service was very good. A very good place for a business meeting.
Expensive, noisy, average food
We had 2 schnitzel dishes that were dry and plain, but flavorful. Each was served only with potato salad; a vegetable (beans, carrots, asparagus, etc) would have been nice, given the $22-24 price. Salad is an extra $8, good bread was included. Service was prompt, but the high noise level and crowded restaurant do not lead to enjoyment of a relatively expensive meal. It is more of a "bier hall" with fine dining and prices, not a place for an intimate experience. I think I'll pass.
German food in KC - Excellent
2nd time we have gone there and enjoyed great food in nice atmosphere. We have decided to make it an annual even on our conference trips to KC. Even for non-alcohol drinkers, the food stands on its own. Service top notch - helpful, attentive, and present without being overly so.

We started with the spinach salad and fritattensuppe. Both were quite delicious and the presentation was simple&clean. The paprikahuhn was wonderful and the spätzle is definitely one of my new favorite side dishes. Be sure to try one of their desserts if you have room for it!. We will definitely be going back!
A fantastic experience!
My wife and I had Easter lunch and the special entree consisting of Roasted Leg of Lamb with Rosemary seasoning, Potatoes, and green beans in bacon was superb. Service was fantastic with friendly, attentive personnel. I wholeheartedly recommend this fine restaurant.

Who are they kidding
I used to love Grunauers, and always tend to order the Schweinebraten (roast pork), but no more. They served two pieces of pork, one of which was totally fat. I could not get one sliver of meat off of it. My hubby ordered the same thing. Guess what? Same deal. Note to Grunauers: either serve two decent pieces of meat or just one. They insult my intelligence by throwing that slab of fat on my plate. Also, one time I drove 50 miles to get there on Sunday to order the three pound pork shank which is only served on Sunday. They didn't have it. Why? It takes eight hours and they forgot to start it the night before. Oh, forgot- had the special dessert the other night. Sherbet mixed with Bavarian cream. Yucky. However, the amount was too small to affect my tastebuds all that much. Too bad- it's a lovely place and I adore Austrian food. Have to say, though, portions are small and prices are large.
The appetizers were excellent, service first rate.
Above all else the service was phenomenal. The atmosphere was great- fitting for a family get together, romantic interlude or business luncheon. Our server(s) was great, seriously. We go out a lot and can be finicky, but couldn't have been happier. My in-laws immigrated from Germany and my son was born there so it seemed appropriate to have his 21st birthday here.
Had a great time. Went there for a birthday. Food was some of the best I have ever eaten. Highly recommend Grunauer.
Great food at Grunauer!
We ate at Grunauer on Saturday, March 19 prior to a concert. Having just returned from Germany we both wanted to have schnitzel. We ordered the cordon bleu and the schnitzel a la Grunauer and then divided them. We also had a side of cucumber potato salad and cheese cake for dessert. The food was fabulous and the service was great. The décor reminded us of Paulaner in Berlin. It was a great meal! We will be back.

Amazing food and service as always. One of our favorites.
Anthony was our server - he was outstanding, personable, helpful, kind and knew the menu well. Bar tender was also amazing. The hostess was so nice as well. We were so happy here and completely enjoyed our visit. GREAT place
Superb food, drink, and service!
The food is always outstanding and even at peak times it comes out in a timely manner. They have a great variety of beer and wine, I recommend the Weihenstephan Vitus. The service is always outstanding.

Everything was absolutely wonderful. We went to celebrate my husband's 30th birthday after a pretty rough year. Food was delicious and reminded me of my trip to Germany back in high school. We will definitely keep this place in mind for future celebrations. Would eat there more regularly but is a bit of a hike for us.
Excellent first impression
My wife and I dined at Grunauer for our anniversary dinner; neither of us had eaten there before and we were impressed. Our server, Daniel, was attentive but not pushy and made good recommendations. We started with the amazingly rich and tasty wammerl - pork belly with semolina dumplings, drizzled in a balsamic reduction. Then dinner, traditional fare - schnitzel, with a toasty breading and sprinkled with lemon; and kasespatzle, Austrian noodles with cheese and onion. Both were enticing enough that we ate more than we should have! Accompanied by a good Austrian wine and German beer, we emerged sated and happy. We look forward to visiting again and trying some of the more esoteric offerings.
Grunauer is Austrian for great food and great beer
German and Austrian restaurants are hard to find these days in America and great German or Austrian restaurants are really rare. Tucked in between two restaurants famous in their own right for serving great BBQ--JackStacks and Italian--Lidia's, Grunauer's is a real gem. It has all the staples of German cuisine together with several Central European varieties which prove its culinary heritage comes from the days of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The wonderful food is topped off with a terrific selection of draft beers from Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic. The venue is very attractive and, although the wait staff can at times be just average, on this visit our waiter, Megan, was friendly , informative and added to the overall experience.
Great anniversary dinner.
Second time at Grunauers. The food is great. Very generous servings. Hard to find Austrian/German restaurants around Kansas City. The waitresses were very attentive without being pushy. Good variety of meals. Long wine and beer menu. The cocktail I had tasted like it actually had alcohol in it which isn't always the case at other places. It is expensive so not for everyday but if you want a special treat this definitely fits the bill. It is noisy as seems to be the norm at restaurants these days. The tables are spaced far enough apart so you can't hear people at another table.

I've been before and had very good experiences. This particular visit did not live up to my expectations. We were unhappy with our table and asked to move, but the manager was resistant to our request, despite the restaurant being nearly empty. My food was cold and seemed like it had been re heated from a previous meal. Will not be returning.

Good food and beer selection! Didn't care for the table they gave us right by bar and entrance to next room. Seemed in the way.
Grunauers is amazing!!!!
The food was phenominal! We are foodie wannabes, and love trying new things. It was so good we were all tasting each other's dishes! Our waiter was fun and playful with us, which made it even better. I raved to a friend about the meal and received a text from her last night thanking me for sending her!
Although a little pricey it was worth the money. I wanted something as close to German cuisine to share with my kids as possible. A wonderful menu selection, fresh and prompt service.
Awesome Dinner Experience
We had a great meal, delicious drinks, incredible service from Anthony, and "To Die For" desserts! It was a perfect night for a special occasion with family in the Heart of Kansas City.

Amazing service and a unique experience. The food was top notch. The authenticity of everything from the dishes to the beer to the coffee mad it evident that every part of this meal was finely crafted.
For an authentic German culinary experience Grunauer's cannot be beat! We have been here on multiple occasions and the food and service has been amazing every time! Don't miss out!!!
Great dining every time.
Grunaur has quickly become a favorite of my significant other and I. We have come here several times and every time we enjoy great food and wonderful service. I highly recommend the Wammerl appetizer and my S.O. highly recommends the Traditional Schnitzel as it's the most authentic he's had in the KC area. Honestly though no matter what we try it has always been top notch in quality and flavor.
