Garcon Ratings and Reviews
good enough isn't
because being good enough in the san Francisco food scene just isn't good enough any more. this restaurant offered an ok meal and overall experience. the hostess was charming and very good, the wait and support staff were casual yet accommodating. The brussels sprout side dish was extremely greasy, but to be fair it was prepared with a fair amount of bacon/lardon so perhaps it can ease up on that a bit . The bus boy took our desert and coffee order but brought the espresso right away while our fondant chocolate cake order clearly called our for a 12 minute time frame. needless to say, the espresso was totally cold by the time the cake arrived.
Loved the food!
We celebrated a birthday and they did great job of bringing the food out for all ten of us at the same time! The staff was very attentive and the food was terrific!
Food was solidly good, nothing special.
Food was good, all around (I had the duck confit, friend had the sweetbreads and coq au vin), but lacked any nuance of flavor. Portions were small. So not a great value, considering high prices, low quantity and meh quality of food. Waiter seemed distracted by socializing at bar, and we felt like an afterthought for much of the night. Wouldn't make an effort to eat there again.
Very disappointed. Had reservations shortly after opening, very few people. Ordered the French Onion soup and for a French restaurant, really, microwaved! After a few bad martinis, ordered the entrée. There were 2 of us and ordered the special of the day, steak. It was by the ounce and apparently they had only one of the 12oz. left mind you that they just opened. Didn't ask about price but really did not expect it to be more than double of all other entrees. Brussel sprouts, what is this, mmm, not so good and mashed potatoes squirted on the plate.. Bill well over $200!!! We would certainly have gone to Ruth Chris and had an amazing meal for less! Next French dining will be at Chez Maman on Potrero Hill where the French onion soup is oven baked and out of this world followed by their wonderful steak at a fraction of the cost. Real French dining! Service was good, too bad food was not!
Excellent thank you for the great dinner!
Was a wonderful little French place. Food was good, atmosphere was in line.
Romantic french dining with a New Orleans flare
My husband and I have been coming to Garcon for years now. It is under the radar which means you can almost always get a last minute rez. The food, cocktails and service are stellar. You will get to know the staff after a while since there is not a high turnover. Our favorite part is getting a special visit from the Chef/owner- Arthur, while he makes his rounds to check on the patrons. Sure-thing menu items are steak frites, coq au vin, risotto and duck.
French onion soup.
French onion soup.
The food was great. The best French onion soup I have ever had. The steaks were perfectly seasoned. I know this may sound silly but the French fries were perfect. The chocolate dessert was to die for. The crowd was definitely a younger crowd, but my wife and I who are older did not feel uncomfortable.
It took 15 minutes before we were seated even when we had reservations. Another 20 minutes to get our drinks order. The food was already cold it had been sitting out without being served. Nobody was rude but this kind of service was just way bad.
Took Great Care of Out of Town Guests
Garcon is still my favorite restaurant. I had friends from out of town visit, and they were well taken care of. Four of us had the duck, and it was crazy yummy. The cheeses were fantastic, the creme brûlée was suuuuuuper creamy, and the service was very pleasant and prompt. I always ask the server to pair my wine for me, and he brings me a sample and gets it right every time. Great cocktails, as well. Arthur, the chef, came to say hello and was accessible and friendly. He is a culinary artist, no doubt. I always leave this restaurant feeling quite satisfied. Well done, as I can confidently expect. :-)
Good food (wish the portion is a liiiitlle bigger)
My friends and I ordered several cocktails and beer. They're delicious and the descriptions are on point. We had duck confit and couq au vin. They're well seasoned and flavorful. And the waitress was very helpful and sweet.

The food was amazing. I lived in France and this restaurants transported me there. Great flavors and one of the best Foie gras that I have ever tried! the service was fast and great. Authentic french cousin where even the waiter was french.
I've been before and had ok experiences. Never spectacular, but good enough. Not sure if the most recent visit was an off night or if it's gone downhill. First off, we were seated at the shittiest table in the restaurant. I get it, every restaurant has a shitty table and someone has to sit there, but this was a triple whammy of being in a very high traffic area, at the waiters stand, and it was a two-top trying to squeeze three people in. I could have dealt with two of the three, but this wasn't going to work for us. We asked to move twice and were declined both times by the hostess. Then some guy stepped in and got us a different table. Much better. Then the food came. I was so underwhelmed compared to previous visits. Not much else to say except it just wasn't that well prepared. Each of us had something that was off in our dish. Seasoning, over done, under done. Again, must have been an off night. Not sure if I'm willing to give it another chance, but it'll be a while before I go back.
Excellent French Food
I've eaten here twice. The first time I had a wonderful coq au vin and this last time I had steak frites. Both these classic French dinners were delicious. The atmosphere reminded us of Paris. The wine pairing was good and the armagnac afterwards was perfect. We'll be back to continue exploring the menu.
Garcon Always Delivers
Garcon is a neighborhood gem. We have been going there for 9 years and they have never delivered a bad meal. They do not have "off nights" like other restaurants in the City. The food is excellent, service is timely and friendly and the cocktails at spot on! One of our favorite go to restaurants in the City.

I am a big fan of garçon , I came here all The time . This time we came here to celebrate my friend bday. We order mussel, two foie gras and two ribeye . Mussel was excellent, foie gras was great too. Ribeye was great but the meat was too tough. It was chewy and we could not finish it. Too much silver skin. Please use a better cut of meat or better grade.

Good French inspired food in a relaxing atmosphere. Staff made us feel at home.
Duck was excellent
Duck was excellent. Great service, attentive. Seemed most or all wait staff were actually French
Beware: Overpriced and bad
Last night my partner and I did Garcon's special Valentine's Day $85 prix fixe dinner. We had had a good meal there once before and we excited for a special occasion treat. For the whole restaurant to be put on a set menu, we thought they must be going to pull out all the stops. But no. There's no other way to put it - it was really bad. In fact, it was a complete rip off. The first "course" for everyone was a croquette. It was a flavorless, dry, mealy ball sitting in some salad dressing. Next I chose gnocchi and my partner had the foie gras. Gnocci as overdone with some pieces burnt, whole cloves of mushy garlic and way too much salt. Partner's foie wasn't bad but the brioche toast was hard and stale. Next was the halibut which arrived with asparagus in a greasy mess of a plate. It was also a salt overdose. I could only eat about half. Desserts - creme brulee and a pot de creme were actually good and saved the night from total disaster. The bill will two cocktails each was $230. There was no reason to have a prix fixe menu other than to jack up prices on a traditional dinner out holiday. All the food was probably cooked that morning and warmed up. There is so much better French food in San Francisco. For $72 per person, you can treat yourself to AQ and have an unforgettable meal. I guess Garcon used to be a dependable neighborhood bistro. But that was a long time ago. :(

Valentine's Day prix fix menu was ok. Not comparable to their usually exceptional selection. Some of their usual signature dishes were missing which was a little disappointing. Overall we have been here about 4-5 times and have always had a good time. A little pricey for anything else than a special night celebration.

The food was very flavorful but a bit salty. Great presentation though, and love the casual unpretentious ambiance.
Pre valentines dinner
We stumbled into Garcon several years ago and have been back many times. The food is always top notch, vibrant, fresh yet not bizarre, a chef in the business here talking folks. Good portions, flavors appearance and value for real cooking from real people served by real people with smiles opinions and a sense of professionalism, not like "who gets da chicken"? We will be back again and again, we love you guys.
Awesome, as always!
So glad this restaurant is in my neighborhood. Delicious and consistent. Friendly and helpful staff. Great cocktails! Menu is a bit limited for me as I only eat poultry and fish. But I always find something satisfying. Especially the mussels. If you're a mussel fan, you'll love them.
Food Poisoning from most likely Pork Pate.
My fiancee and I ate here for dinner during SF Restaurant Week. Service was good, but after eating the food, we will not be returning. We suspect the Pork Pate on their menu was culprit of the food poisoning.
The food and drinks were good but the service was poor. Our waiter could have been faster in getting our drink orders re-filled and bringing out our food. But the worst part was literally we were signing our credit card checks - when the hostess comes over to our table telling us about how she has a party that has been waiting for a long time (is that my problem) we hadn't even finished signing our checks when she tells us this info. After she offers the info that a party has been waiting for a long time - lets us know "oh but I dont want to rush you and you can stay" ok lady if you didn't want to rush us -then why talk to us. We made reservations like everyone else and if the waiter was a little faster - then maybe that party would have been seated at another table more quickly.

If you live or visit San Francisco and don't try this place you missed one of the most amazing dining experiences you will ever have. What an atmosphere. What great food creations. Mouth is watering thinking about it. You will not regret any part of it.
Good date spot
Great food and wine list with fun atmosphere. Good date spot. A little pricey, but the portions were surprisingly good.
A Mighty Fine Choice for Dinner
The four of us ate dinner on a Saturday night during SF Restaurant Week. The menu was inventive, everything came out at precisely the right temperature, and was perfectly cooked, the portions were well balanced (non of this fru-fru tiny plate nonsense, and we didn't feel glutenous afterward either) and the wait staff was personable--even charming--without being intrusive. I've also been here when SF Restaurant week wasn't going on and it was a comparable experience.
Delicious and authentic
Onion soup was hot and just right. Steak was very tender and frites were crisp and salty. We just returned from France and this felt right at home. House wine was reasonably priced, just like in France. Not like some of the new, trying too hard places. This felt real and delicious.
Can't wait to go back
Went here during SF restaurant week. We ordered the 3 course special for the event. There were several choices to pick from. In addition to the special menu, we did start with the bone marrow special. It was delicious. We were seated promptly for our reservation, given menus and offered drinks. Our food came out in a timely manner. The only negative thing was, I ordered 2 kir royales. On the bill, I was charged two different prices for the same drink. The restaurant was very busy and the difference wasn't enough to complain about. I can't wait to go back.....there are several more things I need to try on the menu.

I came the 2nd night of SF Restaurant week specifically based on the menu online. The menu had changed and no attempt was made to accommodate my request. The service over all was not good. The food was okay. Extra charges were erroneously added to the bill. Will not go back.
Good but not great.
Delicioius sweetbreads! However, scorched coq au vin and crusty, charred profiteroles were a big disappointment. 45 minute wait on our table past our reservation.
Better than expected.
If you love French food, try this place, it's wonderful.
Awesome French food and great staff. Chef came out to say hello. Lovely place.
Excellent French Cuisine in the Mission
A very nice neighborhood bistro. A changing menu makes it fun to come back to try their new menu offering and specials. Good service, never feel rushed. Good cocktails and wine list.
New years eve menu
The food was.great and.the service was good overall. They were a little disorganized with the service. It was a 5 course menu (3 was enough to fill you up) and they brought our appetizer third because they forgot. I think it was too much and it was hard for the service to keep up.
Went on cold SF night colder inside that outside! Server not friendly !!!
We absolutely loved this restaurant! It is true French food. We ate there two nights in a row while we were in San Francisco. Lucky for us, we only live an hour away and we will absolutely be back!
Great French Cuisine
We went here on Christmas Eve. They had a fixed 4 course menu with a good variety. The food was well prepared and very flavorful. The wait-staff was warm and friendly and made you feel welcomed. The minor down-side was that the restaurant was cold but it was a very cold night outside and there was one noisy table which raised the overall noise level. We will be back again!
