Fried Green Tomatoes Ratings and Reviews
Out of towners who visited FGT on a recommendation....and it lived up to the referral. Food was excellent, waiter friendly and conversive, and we visited early enough in the season (mid-April) that the restaurant was not jammed--which I know it will be come slightly warmer weather. Enjoyable experience!
The Right stuff
Every time we go to Gelena, IL, we make it a point to have dinner at Fried Green Tomatoes. I like fish but the espresso dusted filet with caramelized onions was excellent. Coupled with the mashed potatoes and house salad, it was a feast to go back for again and again.
A must stop
We visit Galena every year or so and Fried Green Tomatoes is always a must stop. The Expresso Steak is always fantastic. We have dined there 10-12 times and the food and service has never disappointed.
Hadn't been back to Galena for many years.
We have not been back to Galena for years and we have missed out on a wonderful restaurant! We went mid-week and it was perfect.... Great place with ambience, especially with being in the historic town. We are now scheduling a Galena trip every 2-3 months.

Me and my guests were blown away by the private room reserved for us upstairs. I have eaten at Fried Green many times before and the food and service has always been outstanding, but this was above and beyond the best time there. All of my friends had not dined there before, but they will all be back. Thank you for a wonderful dining experience!
A Restaurant with Energy
We have been frequenting this restaurant for the past 12 years and have always been satisfied. Whether we are there with a group or just the two of us we have never been disappointed. Fried Green Tomatoes has an energy about it that makes it welcoming and fun the minute you step through the door. We highly recommend it when you are in Galena.
Our favorite restaurant in Galena! Everything is always wonderful!
Recently my husband and I were in Galena celebrating my husbands 60th birthday. This was our first visit to Galena so we were not too familiar with the area. The night of our reservation there was a horrible rain storm and we got lost. We were 45 minutes late for our reservation causing us to arrive after their last seating. They were so kind and understanding and welcomed us warmly when we arrived. We weren't rushed even though we were the last ones in the restaurant. The entire experience was amazing. The food was incredible but most of all the hospitality was exceptional. What started as a very stressful evening turned out to be the start of an incredible visit to Galena. Would HIGHLY recommend :)
We always have one meal at Fried Green Tomatoes when we are visiting Galena. We are never disappointed.
Food was good. Service was outstanding. Very loud. hard to carry on a conversation. The fried green tomatoes are awesome.
Normally a Great Experience
We must have had a newer waitress. She never left the olive oil on the table. Never offered more hot water for tea, etc. normally, the service is exceptional.
Consistently amazing food
Hubby and I went here for a birthday weekend getaway. Every time we are in town, we end up eating here, because the food and service are always great. Once again, Fried Green Tomatoes did not disappoint. This time, he had the Filet Mignon and I had the Filet and Shrimp. The filets were both cooked to our liking and they were both very juicy. The shrimp were a good sized and cooked nicely as well. The mashed potatoes were very creamy and flavorful and a decent sized portion. The asparagus had good flavor and were not too soggy or crispy. The meals also come with a decent sized salad with their home-made raspberry vinaigrette and a loaf of their garlic Parmesan bread. We also bought a bottle of their wine to have with our meal. Uncorked red, can't remember which one. For dessert, we had the creme brulee, which is one of the best creme brulee we have ever eaten anywhere. The server was very friendly and efficient at helping us, never making us feel rushed. We will always come back here to eat when in town and would recommend it as a first choice for dining.
Great as ususal
Food and service was outstanding as we have grown accustom to. Our server Carrie was very attentive and pleasant as always. The tomato basil soup is out of this world! The salmon was scrumptious and the fresh asparagus was delicious.
If I had to pick a perfect restaurant, this would be it!
Great spot to end my mini vacation
This restaurant came highly recommended from our friends who have visited Galena. From service, to the wine, to the food this restaurant was a wonderful ending to a romantic Valentine's Day weekend in Galena.
Made reservations for Valentine's Dinner. The only time available was 5:30. Great table, great view. I ordered a Pomegranate Martini. It was TERRIBLE. Had the entree with the shrimp, scallops, and it was suppose to be spicy. Not spicy at all. The bread they serve is delicious. The service was good but I think the food is overpriced and the bartender needs to work on making a good martini. Very disappointed.
GREAT, great food, great service, great ambiance, good value, great all around on everything.
Wonderful service...good food!
We visited with a family group on Valentine's Day and it was busy. The service was still exceptional....especially the bus staff...they were so accommodating through the night!
We had a wonderful dinner including salmon / asparagus, eggplant parmesan, and meatloaf finished off with creme brulee. The wine was delicious. Our only complaint was the house salad salad dressing of raspberry vinaigrette which was awfully sweet and thick. Oveall we had a great evening.
We had a great experience for valentine's day. The food was amazing and the ambiance was romantic and quiet. Felt like we were the only ones in the restaurant. Definitely will be back again.
Disappointment is an understatement
Every year we attend the Lobster Dinner for Valentine's Day. Every year it is wonderful with the exception of this year. The evening started off with a family and their extremely loud children in the restaurant. The parents did not seem to care that the rest of the couple's were attempting to have a semi-romance dinner. We ordered the Lobster Special with Crab/Mussels/Corn/Potatoes. Our potatoes were not cooked AT ALL. You could tell just by looking at them. The lobster and mussels were over cooked, rubbery and cold. The corn was warm but over cooked and chewy. The crab was the best part and perfect! We kept eating with the expectation that it could get better...maybe we just had a "bad bite" but as time progressed we realized it was not us, it was the food. We had a hard time getting the attention of our server and when she did finally come back (without the bread she promised us) it was too late. We were done. We were over it and I think we all know nothing at this point nothing will make up for the lousy food. We have high expectations of Fried Green Tomatoes because it has always been spot on! So to say this dining experience was a disappointment is an understatement.
Great and creative food. Tuscan Mac and cheese!!!
We had wonderful evening. Excellent service and great food. The recommended wine special was excellent and great value. Filet and shrimp and Tuscan Mac and cheese were outstanding. Get the fried green tomatoes appetizer as well.
This restaurant always rises to the top.
The best recommendation I can give about this neighborhood gem is we buy restaurant gift certificates for our friends, and give them as Christmas presents. About four times a year they offer a lobster, mussels, roasted corn, and potato dish which is a killer combination. I can't help but get it every time. My wife feels the same way about their lobster ravioli. They have a broad wine list, a very efficient and friendly staff and reasonable prices. We have always had excellent meals and friendly servers. My wife and I heartily recommend Fried Green Tomatoes!
Definitely not worth it for the price. I had been to the restaurant years ago when it was in Irish Hollow and had fond memories of both the atmosphere and food. When we arrived, the atmosphere downstairs in the new location is nice, but we were led to our table upstairs where the decor looked very dated and worn. I ordered the filet mignon and shrimp. It came with an odd cloud of sprouts on top. Not sure why - it made no sense and didn't seem to fit with the rest of the dish at all. I asked for my filet cooked medium but discovered it was very rare in the inside and had to send it back to be cooked longer. The waitress was somewhat apologetic and took care of the problem right away, but we would have appreciated some sort of additional compensation for our troubles like complimentary drinks or dessert. Overall the experience did not meet with the price and hype for this restaurant.
A Miss this time
Have dined here several times before and have been very pleased. The food this last visit was not what it had been. The walleye had quite a few bones that should not have been there. The manager was apologetic and offered to replace it with an alternative selection and provided a complimentary dessert. Service was outstanding...server had a great sense of humor and was attentive even when very busy. Don't think we will be back, however.
Excellent Food and service
The Salmon with macadamia nut pesto is excellent. The fish has great taste to it and it is not fishy at all. The asparagus served with the salmon were cooked to perfection along with the salmon. My server was Amanda and she was great! The fresh bread that is served with your meal is fresh made and it is amazing.
We had a girls weekend to Galena and decided to splurge on dinner. THis was a great choice. From the appetizers, bread, salad, dinner, desert, and drinks it was Amazing. We all tried something different. Steak was super tender and full of flavor. Acutal fried green tomatoes were a great starter and the lemon blueberry cake for desert was to die for. Salads came with a Raspberry vinegarette which was light and very tasty. The staff was very courteous, always there to clear our plates and fill our waters. Very attentable. Great atmosphere, filled up fast. Do recommend reservations. We arrived 45 minutes early and our table was ready and we were able to be seated right away which was nice.
Great food and good service
I took my team of 9 to dinner here and all enjoyed their meal. Service was good, selection was good. We have some gluten free team members and adaptions were made for them. Our server was very attentive and helpful. Good wine list and a great promo with 50% of wine bottles that night! We have the Seabass, Steak and Shrimp, Pasta dishes and of course the Fried Green Tomatoes.
Every steak I ever get here is perfect...and paired with a budget friendly but surprisingly delicious wine.
the chilean sea bass melts in your mouth
We celebrated our anniversary here and probably will every year! Food, service, and atmosphere was spectacular!

Service was incredibly fast and our server made some great recommendations. Everything from the appetizers to desserts were spot on. It was very quiet when we got there around 6 and then as business picked up, the atmosphere became more lively but still very comfortable.
One of best in Galena. I have never ordered anything I didn't like.

While my wife and I have dined at Fried Green Tomatoes many times in the past and have always had a very good experience, this time was miserable. We were seated at a table just to the side of the coat check room so people were piled up next to our table during the entire course of our meal. We also were just off of the bar area and we had to holler at each other to just have a conversation. I realize that this was New Years Eve and they are busy, but this was also our anniversary and we enjoy going here for this since usually we have been seated upstairs where it is very quiet and serene, or even when we have been seated in the lower level we have been inside far enough to avoid most of the bar noise. The food as always was excellent and the wait staff was very polite and professional; however for the prices of the meals I don't want the noise and commotion of the bar or everyone coming for their coats. I can go to any number of places for the bar atmosphere and pay a lot less for the experience. We will certainly being looking for a different location for our anniversary meal next year.

Worth a second visit
We ate here for dinner on New Year's Eve. The food was good but the service was not. I realize that they were unusually busy due to the holiday which definitely had an impact on the long wait for food and drinks. We will try again next time we are in town.
Excellent New Years Eve get away.
Excellent scallops and mile high meatloaf. This was a quiet peaceful evening with great great service.
As always, dinner was delicious, and wait staff was very attentive. An added bonus was that it was a Wednesday evening, so all house wines were $3 a glass!
Fried Geen Tomatoes a must! Seafood was fresh and cooked just right.
