About Four Square Restaurant
Four Square is located in the Bartlett Mangum House, a restored 1908 Victorian home listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Outside, massive Doric columns flank the entrance. A wraparound porch, second floor balcony, and slate roof capped by iron scrollwork complete the picture. Inside, the intimate dining rooms each have their original coal burning fireplaces with tiled, carved wood and mirrored mantelpieces. Leaded and stained glass windows and beautiful woodwork can be found throughout.
Our menu changes bi-monthly to reflect our commitment to bringing diners the freshest and most seasonal products available. We rely on local famers and purveyors to bring us the region’s best, from vegetables and grains to seafood and meats. We have a passion for food at Four Square, and we hope you sense it when you dine with us.

Four Square Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
Another enjoyable experience...
We chose Four Square for it's small, personal rooms and past experience. Courses (presentation and taste) were often the subject of conversation. Our waiter, Chris, was a joy... full of humor and one of our guests felt he could visualize the dishes described. It made our decisions hard and enhanced our desire to come back. A nice evening!
We have eaten here when we are in Durham over the past 8-10 years. The food has always been very good to excellent. My wife's salmon was excellent as were her appetizer and dessert. My meals was the same except the Saratoga steak was very tough but was cooked well in a port wine reduction. The service was outstanding. We will continue to return in the future.
Sitting on the front porch having good a glass of wine was delightful. Food and service was very good. Desserts were less then satisfying. A chocolate Carmel cake was dry and not very flavorful same with the milk chocolate cheesecake. The music over the loud speaker was 70's R&B and didn't fit the elegence of the the surroundings. And it was way too loud.

I wanted this restaurant to be great. It was not. The atmosphere was neat, but the food and service were sub-par. I've eaten at many nice restaurants and, frankly, I won't rush back to this one. I'm only giving it a 3 bc my husband kind of liked his entree.
Great food and great service

Birthday Well Spent
My mom and I had a great time celebrating my sister's 33rd bday. This restaurant has been on my sister's must go list for years (we are true blue Durhamites) and for some reason she never tried it. It was totally worth the wait! My sister and mom are foodies, adventurous pallets and always ready to try new flavors, in contrast I will try new dishes w reservation (my motto: can't say I don't like it if I don't try it) and it was worth the try for all of us!! Service was exceptional and all courses (1 throught 3 were unforgettable). The atmosphere is elegant, inviting and warm. It was too cool to dine on the patio but I can see that being a perfect place to enjoy the meal. The cocktails were refreshing and added just the right additional to the meals; my wine Reisling, recommended per the waiter, was light springy and sweet-in a good way- as I requested. Thanks for helping us celebrate my sisters bday AND WE WILL BE BACK (considering pricing the venue for my wedding reception....)
With So Many Choices in Durham, Prob Won't Go Back
First off, our food was very good and well presented if not a little tired. Service was mixed to meh. Overall it was very expensive especially for the portion sizes. I'm not looking for portions a la The Cheesecake Factory, but a scallop entree with 3 scallops and a $36 steak entree with less than 6oz of non-prime less-than tenderloin? As the title states, it's a nice space and the food was good, but with so many choices in Durham for fine dining, Four Square is off the list.

We very much enjoyed our meal at Four Square. The service was excellent and the meals creative. Lots of great seafood selections.
Exceptional in every way
If you are looking for a truly memorable dining experience, look no further than Four Square. It's a little tricky to find if you don't know Durham, but it's totally worth the extra effort. Everything about the restaurant is top notch: not a misstep anywhere. Excellent food, thoughtfully prepared and beautifully presented; attentive yet unobtrusive service; small rooms with niches that make you feel like you're dining in private. Just lovely in every way, can't recommend it highly enough for a special date night or celebration. Expensive--but there are many other restaurants where you will spend an equal sum for a far from perfect night. Not at Four Square! Thanks to all the staff & chef for making our evening so special.
An excellent anniversary dinner
My wife and I had been wanting to try Four Square for a while, now, and are glad we did. The seasonal menu had something of an Asian sour/savory theme that came through in the poached duck egg, venison, and rockfish dishes we ordered. Our server gave us lots of personal attention, and was very knowledgeable about the menu and drink list. We ate on the covered patio, which was lovely, even when it started to storm. Try it if you get the chance.
Small but interesting menu. Big wine selection and nice selection of restaurant-specific cocktails. Sectioned-off into small and larger dining halls, so depending on where you are sitting you can hear other tables' conversations. Personally felt garlic was used heavyhandedly in the salmond dish that did not advertise garlic as being a main ingredient... Courteous and helpful service with cozy ambiance could be a plus for date night. I will not return again.

First timer, Different kind of dinning than i am used too but VERY nice I will come back !!!
The night I dined there, it was VERY noisy downstairs.
Four Square delight
The food here never disappoints and, on this visit, greatly exceeded our expectations. Wonderful lobster bisque, an absolutely delicious venison rib chop with side dishes that competed for your attention and flounder done in a way that both surprised and delighted my wife. We have been coming here for 8 years and they are still delivering a great meal and dining experience.
A special evening
We spent the 50th anniversary of having met at Four Square. Our waiter was attentive and professional. The wine that he suggested proved to be just right for our dinner choices. The menu was varied and since both my husband and I enjoy trying new things we did just that and were not disappointed. The tenderloin of duck was delicious and beef tongue charcuterie a treat. My only thought was that I wish that our table had been in a more quiet spot. Our reservation was for 6 o'clock and we had thought that we might miss the Saturday evening crowd. Unfortunately there was a table of 6 next to us and one young women punctuated every second word with "like" and that got old very fast. Of course the restaurant could not help that! Overall it was an evening of delicious food and good service. We did not feel rushed even though there must have been a second seating shortly after we left our table. Four Square is a special place for a special event.

The venison was delicious. It was part of the Valentine's Day menu so I'm not sure if it's regularly served
Great food and service. The chief is excellent. The tables are little close and would be private if they were spread out a bit. (front left dining room)
This was one of the best meals of my life! From appetizers to entrees, the food exceeded expectations at every stop. The best valentine's day meal I've ever had.
Perhaps just a bad day at Four Square
I'm one that has ever written a review regarding our dining experience. Having been a waiter, I know full well that there are good days and bad days. We simply had a terrible experience at this restaurant, for such a well known establishment. When our waiter described one of the dishes as bologna, I knew that not much forethought went into his pre shift planning, to learn the menu and specials for the Valentines prefix menu. The Venison was too tough and cutting with a serrated bread knife was a struggle. I did enjoy the bisque and fresh bread. Our waiter didn't deliver our dessert on our table, someone else did. They left without describing the three choices. We'd have loved a quick 20 second story to describe what looked and tasted great.
This was our third time dining at Four Square...
...and the first time we have left not delighted. Our wait for anything other than water was so long that it was noticed by wait staff (not our waiter) who offered the featured first course gratis. It was a warm Brie with currant-walnut gastrique and crouton which came quickly and was unremarkable. Finally our wine arrived and we placed our order. Our waiter gave a cursory apology. We both ordered only entrees, not knowing if the lengthy wait would continue. My duck breast was delicious and I enjoyed it. My husband's porkchop, while tasty, was swimming in an oddly flavored, uncomplimentary broth. We opted not to have dessert. Perhaps they were short-staffed or had an unexpected occurrence as can happen anywhere. Sadly though, we won't be as eager to return.
Wonderful business dinner
Everything on the menu including the specials sounded divine. There were 6 of us and we had snapper, tune, duck and lamb. The appetizers were outstanding also. Tongue pastrami in particular. Desserts were superb and the J Lohr Cabernet divine. And we were not rushed and had plenty of time to talk. An outstanding meal and attentive waitstaff. WE will be back.
My wife and I dined here Valentine's Weekend. Everything was wonderful. We really enjoyed each course. We will definitely dine here again!

I read some bad reviews and was a little unsure of the place at first. I feel terrible for the people that had a bad experience, because they really missed out on how wonderful it can be to dine there. I will be going back as frequently as I'm in the area.
The food and service were excellent.
My wife had the bistro steak and she substituted the fingerling potatoes. They had no problem with that and there was no upcharge as I've seen other restaurants do for similar exchanges. I had the tuna and it was really great. It was perfectly cooked, seared on the outside and pinkish-red on the inside. We were told before ordering that it was actually not tuna but a different type of fish, like a king mackerel or similar. It was sliced and presented over spicy shitake mushrooms in an egg drop soup broth with Chinese mustard to give it a little kick. There was also a mound of rice which tasted like it was infused with green tea to help round out the dish. Overall, an excellent presentation and the flavors worked well together. My wife raved over the steak which was cooked perfectly for her. For desert I had the monkey bread and my wife had the chocolate torte. Again, both were beautifully presented and were a tasty treat to finish off a fantastic meal. I highly recommend this restaurant for a romantic dinner, you just can't go wrong!

excellent as always
terrific food attentive service, the transformed house feels like a special event eveyr time. dessert excellent. go often, worth it.
Very good experience
Service and ambiance excellent. Server very attentive. Chef was willing to modify fish dish at diner's request, very nice! Lamb was very good, very tender and fell off the bone.
We love this place!!!
We frequent Four Square a lot. There is enough room to have a private conversation. The rooms upstairs are great for group events. the wine selection is fabulous and Brandon is superb at helping you choose the perfect wine for the meal. Chef changes up the appetizers and entrees every other month depending on what is available locally. And they all are delicious. I had the duck confit and the red snapper and they were both out of this world. I also try to have room for dessert - The winter citrus dessert was special. An expresso and port topped off a wonderful meal. Buen provecho !
Good food, bad service
Went for NYE with another couple, were seated and ignored for some time. We weren't greated by the waiter and he did not introduce himself. He barked-what do you want and attempted to start with the male spouse I was with instead of the females at the table. He did not explain the menu or offer to answer questions. The food was good but without the detail or care I expect for a nearly 100 dollar plate. The house was nice but somewhat crowded as a venue with the tables per room.

The restaurant is a lovely old house with many small dining rooms. The food was delicious and perfectly prepared. The service was not of the same quality. It was difficult to even get attention for just two of us. The tables are close together and we had a quiet elderly couple on one side and a very loud group on the other. It was a busy Christmas Eve so we were thankful to have a nice meal that we did not have to prepare ourself.
Truly wonderful food in a lovely atmosphere.
We enjoyed this dinner with great service and delicious food. We had the tuna and the beef tenderloin and enjoyed it immensely. My only comment is the lighting was not great, too bright and I don't think overhead lighting should be used in a dining room.
Awesome food. Slow service
Food was simply great with very distinct flavor. Portions were small but still sufficient. A must try. Ambience perfect for fine dining and other business occasions Service could have been better. Too many servers makes way for lost requests. Had to ask twice for our second round of wine and came after 25 mnts
Always a pleasure
From the moment I entered the beautiful old house, I knew I was in for a sublime experience. The maître d' was amazingly attentive and gracious. The wait staff was knowledgeable and respectful of my desire to savor a culinary adventure without a lot of fawning. The food was extraordinary.
delicious food. Wonderful service
great evening for my husband's birthday. Enjoyed it all except the table was close to the front door and a little chilly

Hubby and I went out of town for Thanksgiving and picked this place to have Thanksgiving dinner. Well the service was outstanding, five stars! The price per person was $68 ea not including tax, gratuity etc. The turkey was not cooked fully, so it was raw a little in the middle. The seasoning on the vegtables was too strong for my taste. This may sound picky, but for the prices they charged, I expected a really good meal. The renovations done to this old house turned resturant, were poorly done by amatures. I don't recomment this at all.
Great Ambiance, Great Food
We went for Thanksgiving dinner. The location was perfect. It felt as we were eating at someone's home. The restaurant is a restored historical home that is comfortable and intimate. The food was gourmet, the presentation artistic, and the service five star. Prices reflect all the aforementioned.
