About Fat Canary
This high-energy bistro took over as Williamsburg's best restaurant as soon as it opened in 2004. The sophisticated but relaxed dining room sports a long bar down one side -- a favorite local watering hole -- and an open kitchen which uses fresh local and other ingredients for its creative American fare.

Fat Canary Ratings and Reviews
It ain't good till the fat canary cooks!
I had the beef tenderloin; my friends had the pork chop. Both were excellent. The beef tenderloin was very tender with outstanding flavor. The fries that came with it were seasoned with salt and a fine sprinkle of rosemary and were just as I like them -- crispy on the outside and tender inside. The asparagus was cooked perfectly -- slightly crunchy. The atmosphere was busy. I would not call it romantic, but good food is an aphrodisiac! Enjoy!
Great food, but...
The service was great and the food was too, with the exception of the vegetarian entree choices. I am a vegetarian; there was only one option for an entree, which was the vegetable plate. All vegetables were cooked to perfection, but it was just a plate of vegetables. Why not have a vegetarian dish that is more than that? I'm tired of getting a plate of "sides" when going out - how about putting little more thought in it? I guess there's no demand for it in Virginia, even in a college town. Other than that, it's a terrific place and Paula was a great server.
Everything that came out of the kitchen was not just good, it was great!! The waiter went out of his way to find a beer from their cellar (off menu!) similar to one my husband was hoping to have with his meal. The special touches they provided added to the experience. It was a great way to celebrate a great day!
One of the best restaurants in CW
Not inexpensive but well worth it. Make a reservation...usually fully booked on weekends. Excellent food and wine in a nice setting in the middle of the main street of Colonial Williamsburg. Wine store in basement has excellent selection. Probably the best scallops I have ever eaten.

The food is amazing but the staff is also friendly and knowledgeable. Consistently fabulous!
My wife and I both agreed that there were to many macadamia nuts. Overall, we had a great time, the food was outstanding and the staff was great.

Dined two nights in a row. Wonderful attentive service and very good food. Prices are as expected for good food.
A little dissapointed
Ate at The Fat Canary and had very high expectations for at least a 4 star experience. I came away giving it a solid 3.5 stars based on the quality of the food. The duck breast was a little overcooked and lost its snap as was the lamb shank. (A little dry) It was not far over and the flavor profile was good, but it was not a 4 or 5 star dish. Waitress was 5 star and the wine is reasonable priced.
Excellent special occasion dining
Fat Canary is in demand for a very good reason- the food is excellent. Set in the shopping district of Colonial Williamsburg, it is a bit pricey, but provides an excellent meal. We noticed from our neighboring tables- which are set a bit close (similar to some very good European restaurants), that the portions are very large. Upon asking about perhaps splitting an entree, the server did mention that many people find the portions so large that the chef routinely will downsize an entree for a reduced cost ($40 entree at $25), and this worked perfectly so that my wife and I were able to choose our own dinner and didn't leave half of it on the plate. I highly recommend Fat Canary, but try to make your reservations as early as possible to have a chance at a seating before 8:00.
It's Worth It!
We drove from Richmond to Williamsburg for the sole purpose of celebrating my wife's birthday by dining at The Fat Canary, and it was totally worth it. My wife's tenderloin was so perfect, and my haddock smothered with lump crab was so perfect. The whole evening was perfect. We'll be back - for my birthday.
Fat Canary is our favorite restaurant in Williamsburg! Our server, Tink, is probably one of the best servers we've ever had. She instinctively knows when to take your dinner order or leave you alone to enjoy your cocktail. The food is presented beautifully. We usually enjoy the featured seafood of the evening and have never been disappointed. Can't wait to return!

Great food and service. Highly recommended.
This restaurant has excellent food and never disappoints. Their portion sizes were bigger than expected since last time we went here. Definitely recommend this for a date night.

Fat canary helped make my daughter's birthday a special event. Food, service and ambiance was fantastic. Thank you.
The food at this place was blow your mind great! Tom Powers (Chief Chef) has worked all over the USA and in particular New Orleans. All great chefs worked there at one time or another. Not sure what the magic is, but New Orleans chef experience is the ticket. Our food was perfectly prepared and served. You could have done a painting of it as it was that perfect. Overall it was melt in your mouth great! Never tasted anything like this as we had the fish and beef tenderloin. Onion soup was like none we ever tasted - so special.

We had a superb meal with flawless service. The duck was a fantastic dish.
Always a must when visiting Colonial Williamsburg. Ate here four years ago and loved it. It remains as delightful as ever. The food is both creative and satisfying. The quality is superb. There are excellent wines and the wine prices are amazingly affordable. The overall quality of the experience can't be overstated.
Another Great Meal!
Been to the Canary many times and have never been disappointed. Hard to beat the Heritage Pork Chop with the goat cheese souffle.

The meal was excellent. There was a wonderful selection of unusual choices and everything we ate was fabulous.
Been here 2 times....second time just as Great as the first. Came here with family and they loved it
An amazing total dining experience with spot on pacing of our courses & palate pleasing selections. Our waitress, Tink, did a wonderful job, being very knowledgable of the menu & also cheekishly sassy. She kept the conversation lively & entertaining throughout our night, but was never overbearing, giving us plenty of time alone. For us, dining is all about the complete portrait painted by all involved at an establishment. You won't go wrong at the Fat Canary. The brined pork chop & King salmon entrees were excellent. Cauliflower soup was sinfully creamy, and the macadamia nut dessert a delectable way to end the evening. Congratulated the kitchen staff on the way out! (Can count those evenings in my life on 1 hand!)

Thoroughly enjoyed our meal, it was delicious! Our waitress, Tink, was knowledgeable, friendly and efficient without hurrying our selections or timing of our meal. 5 star rating from us!
We were celebrating my wife's graduation with a party of 6 and I must tell you the food and service were great. I've have been here before and think the food was even better. I have not been disappointed in anything I've ordered from here. The presentation of the food along with the portions were amazing. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who enjoys eating delicious food and drinking great wine. You won't be disappointed.
Being our anniversary they had a special menu with our name on it. The food was fantastic and the service was wonderful. We love this place and always try to "get in" when we are in the area. Very popular place and hard to reservations.

Mediocre, noisy, crowded and expensive.
This was our first visit. The atmosphere is OK (not sure how to categorize it), but the tables and chairs are quite close to each other in the relatively small dining area, making for a noisy and slightly-claustrophobic setting. The open kitchen added to the noise level. We were seated at a table for two in the middle which caused the noise level to be highlighted even more. The chopped romaine salad was very good and substantial, as was the chocolate cake dessert, but our steaks, though tasty, were overdone. The server was very good, but appeared overburdened with guests, and seemed to have a bit of difficulty navigating through the tight pattern of tables and chairs . Overall, it was a mediocre, noisy, crowded and expensive dining experience.
Fat Canary is FABULOUS
Went to the Fat Canary at 8:30 on a Monday night. Our waiter, Nick, was outstanding! He made lots of suggestions for our meal and wine - every suggestion was perfect! The food is scrumptious - probably the best meal I've ever had in 62 years! Thank you, Fat Canary, for a fabulous dining experience! I will see you the next time I'm in town.
excellent food as billed -- i think next time i will just have two appetizers and maybe a salad -- the main courses are pretty big and left little room for desert -- which we had anyway -- a lemon 'cookie' desert with fresh baked lemon sponges that melted in your mouth!! very great food --but as everywhere now it seems the wine and cocktails are expensive [ in my world-- i guess i am old fashioned]-- definitely-- measured up to its reputation ..
My sisters and our husbands dined at the Fat Canary for a special family reunion meal. The staff and servers were just wonderful, and the cocktails, wine, and food were outstanding. One of the best meals I have had in a long time, in fact. We will return when next in Williamsburg!
Attention to detail
The food was excellent and the service and attention to detail were stellar. I have a gluten allergy and they were very careful to make sure my meal was safe. Fortunately, many of their dishes are naturally gluten-free and most diners wouldn't know or care because the food is just so darn good. The restaurant was packed and diners are seated very closely, but it has the perfect level of noise so you can hear your fellow diners, but not feel like you are eavesdropping on everybody or vice versa. We really liked our waitress and the pacing of the meal was perfect. I was celebrating my birthday and am now planning on going there for my next one. Lastly, the cost of the meal was very reasonable, especially considering the quality.
This place was perfect in every way. Atmosphere was incredible, service was above and beyond, and food was impeccable. The lamb shank was cooked perfectly, actually falling off the bone and fork tender. Would recommend again and again. Can't wait to go back.
Food and service are amazing!
Food and service are amazing!
Excellence is here... always....
Had the incredible Rock fish... a different set up than I have had in the past but incredible! The service and food were simple said the best! Had not liked the profiteroles in the past because of the coffee ice cream... but asked for vanilla instead and they were stellar! Anyone who experiences this place will go away thinking... it does not get better than this. Small but always worth the wait. I often eat here alone driving 30 miles out of my way... it is that good! Wish they served lunch... but the cheese shop next door fills that bill!:) On this night Tom Powell's (Chef) Dad and mom were there... I guess his dad remembered me and came by my table to thank me for coming... I told him thank you and Tom is incredible in the kitchen... he is a magician! He smiled... what a nice gesture...especially for a very loyal customer who lives 5 hours away. If you get anywhere near Williamsburg get a reservation... you will thank me for letting you know. :)
What a GREAT Restaurant if you love to eat food!
This restaurant is expensive, but worth every penny. Each dish is different and their wine menu pairs well with their dishes. Anything that you select will be excellent!
Excellent Dining Experience
Not ever disappointed by the quality of the food, selections on the menu, service provided by the wait staff. We would recommend the Fat Canary to all. It is our most favorite restaurant and has been for years.
The best place to eat!
This was the best place to eat. The food, service and price were an excellent value. Would eat here again, would recommend it highly.
