We’ve been dining at FC for decades. So it’s easy to get jaded and come to expect the same level of satisfaction each time. My first thought was “it’s not packed!”. That made hearing easier than normal. But it also made it harder to understand why our server missed my wife’s appetizer order. So back to the fridge with my chilled avocado soup until her dish was prepared. Fortunately that was the only snafu. We will never understand why so many chefs feel the need to add salt to food. And just because we are picky that way I don’t hold it against the kitchen. My steak was cooked as requested (rare) and tender. I’m thinking they may have a new pastry because both of our desserts were heavenly.

One of the best in Williamsburg. Definitely a spot for adults looking for upscale without lots of tourist families. Food very thoughtful.

Server Keith Merritt always makes my experience and that of my guests memorable. He has an uncanny memory for what drinks we order and his recommendations for appetizers, entrees and desserts are spot on. He carries on the traditions of my late friend, Tom Powers. Mgr. David is both gracious and a problem solver, especially when it involves errors by the hostess in giving away seating at Table 15, which I ALWAYS reserve well in advance when reservations are first open. It’s the best restaurant in Williamsburg — no contest — and would be at home in any big city foodie town. And all at prices that are so fair you feel guilty. Best fish anywhere. Best steak you’ll find for miles around. And creativity abounds, especially with appetizers, sauces and deserts. This started out as an occasion restaurant for us. Now we’re there a couple times a month. Oh yeah .. the service is perfect too.

Fat Canary is a real gem. Everything was amazing. The service (Mason was fantastic). The appetizer. The mains. The drinks. The country ham and mozzarella was devine. Short ribs and rockfish were delicious. This is the best restaurant in the Merchant’s Square area and if you are looking for a great sandwich their sister shop (The Cheese Shop) is equally amazing. Can’t go wrong here and while pricey, it is worth it.

FAQs

Yes, the team regularly accommodates special requests. Guests often receive personalized touches for birthdays, anniversaries (signed keepsake menus), accessible seating, and allergy or dietary needs. Call the reservationist ahead of your visit to note celebrations, seating preferences or dietary restrictions so staff can prepare.

Portions at Fat Canary are typical for upscale, chef-driven dining, thoughtfully plated and satisfying rather than oversized. Many guests say entrees and desserts are "perfect" in size, with some noting generous wine pours by the glass. Expect appetizer-to-entree pacing rather than family-style portions; sharing a starter and saving room for a signature dessert (macadamia nut pie, flourless chocolate) is common.

For a quieter experience, aim for earlier seatings or mid-week evenings. Guests report peak buzz and higher noise on weekend nights and holidays, and many recommend making reservations well in advance (seats fill up fast). If you prefer a livelier scene, weekend dinners are popular and energetic.

Yes, Fat Canary is a top pick for a date night or special occasion. Guests repeatedly praise the creative, finely plated Contemporary American menu, attentive service, craft cocktails and an extensive wine list, all in an intimate, relaxed dining room with an open kitchen. Expect a slightly upscale but comfortable vibe; reservations are recommended and the staff often adds thoughtful touches for birthdays and anniversaries.

Answer: Check with the restaurant before you go. The restaurant description indicates reservations may be made and a reservationist is available during the day; the provided hours list dinner service as Wed–Sun, 5:00 pm–9:00 pm. Because some guests mention holiday and special-night service, call ahead or check the website for current hours and holiday openings.

Families do dine here, and many guests bring teens or celebrate birthdays with children. That said, Fat Canary is a fine‑dining, chef-driven restaurant without a kids’ menu, so it’s best for older children who can enjoy composed entrees. For younger kids consider an earlier seating and call ahead to discuss menu flexibility.

Yes, Fat Canary fills up quickly. Reservations for the dining room and bar are strongly recommended and may be made weeks in advance; downstairs operates as a same-day, in-person waitlist for walk-ins. Guests say it’s often hard to get a table, so plan ahead and call if you need help.

Yes, Fat Canary can accommodate accessibility needs and families, but it’s primarily a fine‑dining spot. Guests report helpful hosts who escorted a wheelchair user through a side entrance and moved them to a wheelchair-friendly table. Families and birthday parties do dine here, though the menu is chef-driven rather than kid-focused; consider an earlier seating if you have young children.

Fat Canary’s ambience is upscale yet approachable, an intimate, polished bistro with an open kitchen and energetic bar. Guests describe it as cozy, lively and cheffy; service is professional and warm. Note: when fully booked the noise level can be high, so if you prefer a quieter meal request an early seating or a table away from the busiest sections.

The dress code is business casual. Guests commonly report a smart-casual mix, from dressy outfits for special occasions to well-kept casual wear. For celebrations and date nights most diners dress neatly; if you’re unsure, business casual is a safe choice.

Answer: Often yes, but call to confirm. Guests report holiday service (examples include New Year’s Eve and Valentine’s Day) and the restaurant’s reservationist handles special-night bookings. Because holiday hours can vary, call ahead or check the restaurant’s current schedule before planning a holiday meal.

Mid-week (Tuesday–Thursday) or an early weekday evening is often the best bet if you want a quieter table and attentive pacing. If you prefer a lively atmosphere, Friday and Saturday nights are popular. Regardless of day, reservations are recommended because the restaurant books up quickly.

Busiest: weekend evenings, holidays and special events (guests report high energy and louder noise levels). Quietest: earlier dinner seatings and mid-week visits tend to be calmer. Because the restaurant is popular, reservations for peak times often book quickly, consider weekday nights or early dinners for a more relaxed experience.
