Fang is the sister restaurant of wildly popular restaurant, House of Nanking. Fang embodies both modern and authentic Chinese cuisines in a fine dining setting serving traditional Chinese fare, dim sum, as well as "off the menu" innovative dishes for the adventurous. Chef Peter Fang believes that good-tasting food is universal and should not be bound by how dishes were made in the past. With Chef Peter’s trademark inventiveness and eye for quality, the menu evolves and changes based on seasonally fresh ingredients from the same local Chinatown markets Peter has visited for decades. For fresh seasonal Chinese food in an elegant and modern setting, visit Fang.

I fund a cabbage caterpillar inside my vegetable. The taste of the food is ok but not worth that price. I will never come again.
Really special and great cuisine, but expensive!
I love the food at Fang which is authentic asian, but with interesting and tasty variants. Great xiao long boa, and other dumplings, plus incredible Fang's Buns with beef, duck, chicken, etc. Everything's delicious and presented well. I regret they discontinued their happy hour with more affordable small plates and drinks until 6, but I expect they had a great audience who would all stop ordering after 6pm when prices rise. I'll keep going as they're well worth the price to me.
Always a joy!
I've eaten at Fang several times and always do the "chef's choice". I haven't gotten a bad meal yet. Not your typical "Chinese" restaurant, but more of an Asian fusion. As long as you know that going in, you'll hopefully enjoy it as much as I have.
Most of the dishes were fried, so to much oil for me. the other three diners thought it was all fine, so I was in the minority. The seafood/fish was very fresh. Service a little haphazard, but we eventually received everything we ordered.
Great Lunch experience
This was our first time at Fang's - I was treating a friend for his birthday . Both of us are quite familiar with most of the Chinese restaurants in San Francisco - no matter if it is Chinatown or Clement Street , Balboa St ,Noriega, Irving, etc -- plus being familiar with House of Nanking -- It was great to see a mixed of selection of dishes - some from House of Nanking and then Fang's signature dishes -- I have to say this is the first time in a long time - that we thoroughly enjoyed all of the 5 dishes that we ordered --- and of course doing our own comparison - stating that these were the best prepared we have had in a long time as well. With the dishes so excellent - and numerous to choose - I do recommend that your lunch or dinner party to be 4-6 people so you can order more dishes to experience. One other huge plus - they take reservations for lunch --- I truly recommend to fellow San Franciscans to make Fang's their "go to" restaurant for amazing Chinese food.
Favorite dinner in San francisco
Wonderful restaurant. Loved the food. Loved the prices for wine. Let the kitchen put together a meal for our family of 4. It was reasonably priced and delicious. All 4 of us agree it was our favorite meal in San Francisco! Must try!

Great food as usual, leave the choice to the owner , never fails. Service was very slow downstairs
Rude and mindless staff. Food was cobbled together with no skill or care. Absolutely horrible.
Thank you Kathy
Had a wonderful client group dinner. Kathy Fang gave us a wonderful experience with the food, service and environment! We will be doing this again!
Can't go wrong with Fang
Sent two CEOs to Fang for lunch and everything was perfect from their personal welcome to their chef chosen dishes. I got huge kudos for making the reservation - Fang is Fantastic!

We didn't get served for 15 min after arrival. We didn't receive the correct order after requesting part of meal 4 times. The refills cost full cost which is stupid and needs to be known to customers.

"Sir, put down that menu - now"
I have never yet ordered here myself, in fact, I've never opened their menu. Just tell the grand master to keep the food coming - and he will - and it is all just sooooo good! Wine list is short, but the selection is good w enough variety. I would recommend some dishes but again, I don't know their names - that shrimp thing is very very good, as well as that beef thing, and the white fish, and... Well, haven't had a thing I wouldn't like here.
The food was spectacular as always
Rather than ordering off the menu, we asked Peter to put together a meal for us after telling him that we eat fish and chicken, but not meat. He chose a perfect combination of flavors and textures for us: a highly flavorful steamed fish, little flour pockets stuffed with duck, braised pea shoots, a tofu tomato and nutty rice dish, and a mushroom dish. It was heaven.
POOR table location
I love the food at Fang. Unfortunately, we were at a table for 4 placed downstairs next to very large noisy groups. We were celebrating out son's birthday and we couldn't talk and felt like we were in the way. His birthday was not acknowledged either. Disappointing overall

Really tasty and creative modern Chinese. The Sesame Beef was really good and the wonton soup is delicious with a touch of crispy rice. Crispy spare ribs were uniquely delectable. Definitely a gem in the competitive SFO food scene,

Sat for half an hour at our table and no one even tried to take out order... Restaurant wasn't even half full. Very disappointing.
The Chef offered to select our dinner for us. We were very happy to have said yes. We had a wonderful meal. Not exactly cheap, but well worth it!
Most AMAZING food!
There is Chinese food and then there is FANG. The food is fabulous--light yet bursting with flavor and texture. The chef offered to order for us--I would highly recommend that! We had dishes we probably wouldn't have been smart enough to order--and we will go back for all of them! In fact, we haven't stopped talking about them....
Gets Better everytime
The food gets better every time I go here. The choices one gets here are not available at most comparable restaurants. Will be back soon.
Excellent food in a quiet neighborhood restaurant
FANG has great Chinese food. Better than most places which are a lot more expensive. It is not in Chinatown so the food has to be really good. It is not touristy. It is not in a hotel. It was filled with people who were probably locals.
I made a reservation to take my sales team to Fang for a work/birthday lunch for 8 ppl. It was awful! The woman who served us was not even a server- but I think a cook who simply went and told our order to a server and the food came out at different times. We each ordered individual plates so this was really off. And by the time I got my plate everyone else was done. We asked for two separate checks and when they didn't do that, and so I asked them again and then they split it up in some weird way that didn't make sense. The food was also pretty bland. I could understand if they were busy but it was before the lunch rush and no one was really in there. So in short, terrible.

Awful. Poor ambience, and worse food
Unfortunately one of the worst dining experiences I have had in SF for a while. Food was awful (really awful). Not even close to authentic chinese, odd unthoughtful ingredients, and ugly presentation. To top it off - not cheap and the waitstaff were friendly but unattentive and had no idea what was on menu. Really disappointing. I could write a paragraph on how bad each dish was and have been ribbed for 2 days by my co-workers who I took there. 1 out of 5 and that is generous.
Great First Experience
Upon learning it was our group's first time here, Mr. Fang, owner and chef, proceeded to tell us that we should not worry about ordering from the menu ourselves. He instead sent us dishes he chose himself and we were not disappointed at all! Thanks you Mr. Fang!
PETER FANG WAS OUR WAITSTAFF AND PICKED OUR FOOD
This was an amazing experience. The owner came to our table and asked us about food restrictions. Then he said leave it to him and it was wonderful. He started us out with Peking Duck in the little white puffy taco like shell. Melted in the mouth. Then we had squash and seafood soup. Both light ad creamy and so delicious. Our next course was honey prawns which are my very favorite Chinese food and these were as good or better than any I've had. After that we had a coconut beef on a skewer that was fall apart tender and delicious. The last course was a huge bowl of sticky brown rice with black beans and whole mushrooms that I didn't think we could possibly finish but we did. Very special and wonderful dinner.
Don't Go to Fang
I won't even get into all the details of every issue that I faced dining at Fang. Quite frankly, I should have heeded the reviews that I read about the service and not set foot in there at all. The food is good, but in a city like SF, which has a plethora of good restaurants, it's simply not good enough. The food would literally have to make me lose weight and grow money in order to justify it's preposterously bad service.

I went on New Year's Day for lunch with my brother. We noticed quite a few items listed on their online menu were not on the menu in the restaurant. We asked if we could order those items and they said yes. We ordered 6 dishes; 3 which were not on their restaurant menu. The food was amazing the service was mediocre but everyone was friendly for the most part. When we got our bill, we noticed it was almost $40 bucks more than what we anticipated. In checking each item, we noticed the 3 items we ordered from their online menu was doubled what the price was listed. We asked why and they said on New Year's Day it was dinner pricing all day. However even looking at the dinner pricing there was still a $5-$7 difference in what their online menu priced versus our bill. We didn't fight it and just paid the bill although we pretty bummed with this situation. Not only should every one be notified when ordering but they should also update their menus to be the same. The family next to use had the same situation happen so I'm sure it was an ongoing surprise- issue for people who attended the restaurant midday on New Years. I most likely will not return.
Great New Year's Eve experience
On our first trip to San Francisco we found that we hadn't made dinner plans for New Years Eve. I went to Open Table and found Fang, a fantastic find. We were seated very quickly and the staff was fantastic, but was surprised at the owners reaction when we wanted to order from the menu instead of having him "create" a meal for us. Had we not read prior reviews, we would have probably left the restaurant. I realize he is an accomplished chef but toning down the reaction might help. Once we made it over that small hurdle it was a wonderful dinner with great service and we will return on our next trip to San Francisco.
Peter Fang ... what a delight
Mr. Peter Fang approached our table and asked "Is it your first time her?", and we truthfully answered - yes. And he said - let me take care of you, and quietly took back the menu card, and drinks list. Then walked away. For a while I wondered if it was foolish of me to have left in his hands the fate of our dinner that night ... what a surprise did it turn out to be! We had a most delightful dining experience to close the year. Our heartfelt thanks to chef/owner Peter Fang. We look forward to dining with him again.
well worth a visit the chef d'cuisine called on our table personally and made us a custom lunch based upon our request for vegan cuisine. just delightful.

This restaurant met and/or exceeded our expectations. After perusing the menu (in both English and Mandarin), an older gentleman came over to our table, introduced himself as the chef, and quietly asked us if there was anything (beef, chicken, fish, etc) that we would ordinarily not include in our diet. We stated our preferences and he suggested that we leave the rest to him as he kindly took our menus. Within minutes, the servers began to bring out one delicious offering after another, each dish a unique blend of the best of what this restaurant has to offer. Don't miss this place!

Maybe this restaurant is better on a regular day. Christmas Day was a disorganized madhouse. But the food was good!

I just want to preface this with , we had a reservation and went for dinner at 6.30 on Christmas day so understandably busy. I chose this place as a Christmas Day option since the last 2 times I went (granted over 18 months ago) I found the to food to be flavorful, the cocktails were amazing, all was well presented and the ambiance on par with a decent fine dining restaurant. What has happened since my last visit is this place has become a notch or 2 higher that House of Nan King (the owners original restaurant) and that place is organized chaos. Its now a quick in and out place, food was not hot, zero presentation skills and the service had gone awry. I hope it was just due to the day but in any event, a bad choice for us on Christmas day, it really put a damper on the evening. We even sent one dish back and got out of there as fast we could. The line was backed out the door!
