short staffed but tasty

Have eaten here a number of times in the off season for special occasions. Food is excellent but pricey. On this particular Saturday, our reservation was early enough that we got our drinks and food with no problem, but dining room quickly filled to capacity with only one waiter on staff. That meant we couldn't arrange for coffee after dinner and it took a while to get our check. Unfortunate as the waiter himself was very good but couldn't manage to serve every table. Also wasn't able to get leftovers as they seemed to be tossed by kitchen in confusion.

Doesn't Deliver Expected Dining Experience

Kitchen was unable to present a quality meal even though the menu was limited to a three course - 4 choice menu. Of 4 person table, 1 main course arrived with a plate that held only about 3 bites; 1 main arrived tepid in temperature, and other 2 were uninspired. This after waiting close to an hour between 1st and 2nd course. Dessert course was equally disappointing - cold chocolate lava cakes that looked like they came from the grocery frozen dessert aisle. All for a $70/pp price fix meal.

Disappointment

I had dinner Feb 13 with another couple and octopus salad was uneatable and it took at least 40 - 45 minutes from the appetizer to be served the main course which was over cooked. I have eaten here several years ago and the food and chief was fantasist. However, being charged $69 fix price for each dinner was way overpriced for what we received. Additionally, after several of the plate were sent back the waitress didn't deduct anything from our bill which was over $300. I am afraid there are too many good restaurant in Rehoboth to even come back again.

The food and service again was fantastic. However on a very cold January Saturday nite the restaurant was overcome with people and it took an exceptionally long time between appetizers and the main course. However the food was worth the wait.

We arrived 10 min early for our reservation and offered seat at front door. Since this would put us in a cold draft we asked for a different table. Hostess said different table would be 15 minutes so we happily sat at bar to wait. We were unhappily to see a couple of two who arrived 25 minutes after us seated ahead of us after we had already waited 40 min for a table. Then hostess seated a large table ahead if us when another table for two sat open but unprepared. Last straw was after getting verbal assurance from hostess she was ready to seat us we waited another 15 min watching her bring out individual glasses of water to the prior seated large table. When we asked her why we were seated after the other table of two and had to wait for the large party when our table was sitting empty her response was "I do not know". Unbelievable the unprofessional and incompetent hostess service at such an highly rated restaurant. She did not offer any explanation or sincere apology. Finally the bartender stepped in to try to salvage the situation and make amends for the poor service by the hostess staff. I absolutely would not recommend, my New Year Eve dinner ruined by incompetent employees.

400 dollar dinner for 4 people, avg experience

Disappointed and I'm typically not a particular person. Food was average at best and cost was exceptionally high. I have never written an unhappy post about a restaurant before this. Had contemplated writing an anonymous letter to the owner for the sake of their business.

I am sure that being quiet season in Rehoboth Beach was part of the problem, but what should have been and hour maybe an hour and half dinner turned into a 3 hour deal with up to 40 minute wait between courses! For the price disappointing!

Went there for New Year's Eve Dinner and no on mentioned when I made the reservation that it was a pre fix menu and price. There were only 3 entree choices and neither my husband or I eat dessert. So....we spent $69 per person for an appetizer and entree. We have been to Espuma several times before and I know what the menu price is so we were completely ripped off.

Loved their menu that we accessed through Open Table. When we got to the restaurant for our New Year's Eve dinner, however, there was a limited price fixe menu without any price notations. Didn't think it was possible for dinner for two with two drinks to amount to $185 with tip. What a ripoff for food that was ok, but not special. Certainly not worth $90 each. My bad for not asking about the price ahead of time. But really - Ahi tuna, salad , and dessert for $90.

Annual New Years visit

So worth it for special occasions or jus a wonderful creative flavorful dinner. As locals we love being able to go any time of year and the winter months bring soulful deliciousness to their menu. Thoughtful selections well prepared. The only issue and one that is so common during the off season, is seeming to be somewhat short staffed. Easily overlooked when the chef is so excellent.

We did not know it was a pre-fixed menu for NYE so we were disappointed that we could not order off the menu we saw online BUT the food that we had was outstanding along with the service! Next time, we want ala carte.

Excellent all around!

Four of us went to Espuma for dinner on a quiet Friday night. Overall there are no complaints. Service, food, and ambiance was phenomenal! We had been to the bar several times before, but this was our first dinning experience and we can not wait to go again! We were treated so kindly and had very personalized service. They made us feel like royalty :) Espuma is a great place to go for a relaxing night out.

Loved it. Best paella I've ever had and steak so tender. Our waiter, Ty, was professional, yet personally helpful, willing to participate in a family prank. One of the best meals we've had in Rehoboth. Look Forward to our next meal there.

An excellent restaurant even for vegetarians

Espuma is a gourmet experience with a terrific kitchen. We had a 6:00 pm reservation on a Friday night in October because we are not late night people. When we arrived, we were the first customers, and the only other two customers arrived about 6:45. It was kind of eerie it was so empty and quiet, but that was because Espuma really gets going later in the evening. The vegetarian options in general were excellent. We shared the soup, the vegetarian taster platter (3 cold items, 4 hot items), and the homemade ravioli. All of the food was terrrific. Service was fantastic, but it would hard to judge when you are the only customers in the restaurant. Two minor complaints: (1) the wine by the bottle list was excellent but we only wanted to order from the much less extensive by-the-glass list; (2) like most other restaurants in Rehoboth, Espuma doesn't offer much protein to vegetarians other than cheese. One option I strongly recommend exploring is tempeh, an alternative to tofu that can handle grilling, marinating and other preparations excellently. There should also be some type of alternative with beans for people who don't fear the digestive consequences.

Open table rates this restaurant as a $$, but it should be $$$. The food was okay, but not as good as I'd expect for the price. They did not check up on us often and did not refill our drinks. They gave us 3" square plates with our appetizer and didn't give us larger plates until we had nearly finished our three sharables.

Disappointing

Unfortunately, we were disappointed by this restaurant. The food was uninspired - the grilled octopus was overcooked. The lobster salad was actually very tasty - though we did not realize from the description that it would be fried. When the rapini side dish was served it was hanging out over the bowl. The cocktails, however were creative and tasty (I had the cucumber focused martini and my husband had the mojito). The lights were too bright at first though they dimmed them later.

This was one of the worst restaurants we have been to in Rehoboth. Food, service, drinks- all were very poor. Prices were outrageous as well. We were the only ones in the restaurant at 6 pm on a Friday night, and we now know why.

Enjoyed our time at Espuma. Fish was very fresh and well prepared. Good wine list. Nice ambiance and good service. Was a bit noisy as there was a large party in the relatively small dining room, but it didn't detract from our experience. Will definitely return

I was very much looking forward to dining at Espuma on a recent trip to Rehoboth Beach. I had previously tasted Jay Caputo's cuisine at a James Beard Foundation function and was very impressed. However, the experience at Espuma was dreadful. Although the food was delicious and appealing on the plate, the restaurant itself is not very comfortable or inviting. On the night we dined, they were horribly short-staffed and the wait between courses was way too long. The staff was clearly overwhelmed and the restaurant was not even half full. We changed our mind about ordering dessert when we saw how long it took for a neighboring table to get theirs. There was no flow to the meal, and altogether bad service.

We go to Espuma a few times a year - when we're in the Rehoboth area. We had a very enjoyable dinner, even though there were a few slip ups. My wife had the vegatarian medley and the ravioli was under cooked, plus one entree was duplicated. We pointed out the problem and they corrected it quickly. The bar was a little unprepared. They only had one beer on draft (they ran out of the others?) and they made a bad "special order" blueberry martini (they should have said they couldn't make one. In spite of these issues, we'll be back.

They didn't have 3 of the wines we asked for...why have a huge wine list when you don't have several wines. When the bread arrived, although there were 3 of us, only one roll was provided. It just seemed like they were off all night. Food was fair.

Great Food & Comical Service

To begin, let me say that the food at Espuma continues to be first rate. On a recent visit on a Saturday night, we thoroughly enjoyed the paella as well as our salads and the homemade bread. Now about the service. Our waiter, Kevin, was one of only two waiters working a very busy dining room and it was obvious that they were completely overwhelmed. Assisting the waiters were the bartender, the hostess, and a fellow who admitted that it was his first night and he was trying to help out as best he could as a 'utility player'. Let's call him the jester. The jester was so incredibly funny and self-effacing that it was easy to overlook the MANY mistakes that were made. For example, we were served the wrong cocktails. Later, the jester brought two entrees to our table and announced,"your paella", then turned and quickly walked away. The problem was that these were obviously the wrong entrées (they appeared to be tuna). We flagged down our actual waiter who apologized and whisked the tuna away, presumably to match them with the correct diners. And we were not the only table having technical difficulties; at one point, the jester was pouring hot soup from a tea pot looking device when the lid from the pot came off and landed in the diner's soup bowl. It was hysterical and certainly worthy of a Marx Brothers movie. Remarkably, everyone was in such a good mood, the food was so very good, and the staff was trying hard to cope with a ridiculous situation, so all was forgiven. We actually had an excellent time laughing at the antics of the jester and enjoying the food.

Loved it!

Picked Espuma from of a bunch of restaurants listed on Open Table. Looked decent. We were a bit worried when we were seated and were the only ones there. In any case more tables filled up shortly. We were happily surprised when our appetizers and trio of spreads for the delicious rolls turned out to be fabulous! The head Chef was about and was quite engaging. The main course was also quite good - loved the Tuna and thought the Paella was quite good but would have preferred it without the chicken in it. The dessert was the Chef's blueberry sorbet which was delicious - Yum! Our Server was fantastic! Professional and engaging and knew his stuff. We would definitely recommend Espuma.
