Always a Pleasure
We return to Donatos's often and are never disappointed. It is authentic Italian, but up-to-date and innovative. Service is excellent and there are quiet rooms where we can enjoy conversation and outstanding food.

Al fresco dining on a warm Saturday afternoon with signature cocktails and Italian beer-life should be like this. We will be back. Special shout out to Louis our waiter who put up with our myriad of demands with gusto and sprightliness.
We've dined at Donato's several times. We come from Santa Cruz, so it's always part of an evening at a local theatre or magic show, but Donato's is a big part of what makes the trip worthwhile. The food has always been excellent, the service superb, attentive without being obtrusive - just the way it's supposed to be. They have a modest but extremely well-chosen wine list. I always ask for suggestions about wine, and they have always been right on: appropriate to my taste and to the particular dishes. We don't come with kids, but we tend to dine early (before shows) and have often observed families with kids, and it works just fine. I only wish Donato's was in Santa Cruz.

Enjoyed the oxtail pasta and seafood ravioli. The asparagus appetizer and the special salad were very good. The hostess & our waiter were very nice. Ventura at the bar was super nice & explained all the happy hour cocktails to us. The combo in the bar playing music was very nice.
Missing a lot of flavor!
I brought my sister here for her birthday lunch last week. She said she'd been a year before and thought it was good, so we tried it. The ambience was nice and it was quiet as it was a late lunch time. Service was fine, nothing spectacular. We ordered the Insalata Pollo and the sausage pizza to share. I was really disappointed that neither dish had any flavor. The tomato sauce tasted like tomatoes and there was nothing spicy about the spicy sausage. I asked for chili flakes and that helped. The salad also had no flavor, aside from the bit too much char on the dry, grilled chicken. There was no tang or detection of dressing to the greens at all. The other ingredients on the salad - tuscan beans, cherry tomato - were minimal and so plain. As we split it, we may have each gotten 1.5 cherry tomatoes. Even though we were full and didn't have room for dessert, dessert seemed pricey based on the lunch experience. I will likely not return to try again.
We love Donato... and his food!
This is our favorite for both quick delicious food when we're in a hurry and long relaxing meals with friends and family. Always a great experience.
Fabulous Italian food
Worth the trip from San Francisco to experience the exceptional food at this elegant restaurant.
Redwood City Italian Gem
When I took an intro to Italian course before visiting Italy a few years ago, our professor said there were only a few restaurants on the Peninsula he would call "real Italian." Donato Enoteca was one of them. The food is consistently delicious, with unusual combinations and spices and fish flown in from Italy. Fantastic wine list full of small, regional Italian wines you won't get elsewhere. Staff service is attentive but never tries to rush you. We've had special occasion dinners to Sunday afternoon glasses of wine at Donato Enoteca...always makes us want to return for more.
other places are better
Other local Italian restaurants have better food and better value
2 adults and 6 kids!
We had 2 adults and 6 kids under 13 in the party. What was I thinking? But wait staff were super friendly, they have a kids menu, drawing paper and crayons, the dining room is large so you can hide a large noisy party (we were the large noisy party). Kids loved the pizzas and the pastas. No one complained. Mom and Dad got to enjoy some great food and a glass of wine. Will be coming back without the kids! Thank you Donato.

We had previously been here once before and it was very good, this time, we got very small portions. We ordered a calamari appetizer and only got 3 small pieces of calamari. The pasta dishes were very small. We had to ask for bread, got about 5 small slices for six people, we asked for refill of bread, never came. We were not told portions were so small, we could have ordered salads and soup as well. We would be happy to pay, but the menu makes food sound like you will get sides on it. One dish said asparagus on side, it came with 2 asparagus. Disappointed
great food and great ambiance
I have been here for several times and never had disappointment. The food was great. The relaxing and quiet ambiance also enhances the dicing experience.
Hit and Miss Dinner
Overall Food and service were not as good as on previous visits. Our party of 5 dined in the front room and it was so dark! Even our college aged guests were saying they could hardly read the menu. However we enjoyed our appetizers--The baby artichokes were terrific, with a really refreshing mint pesto. The baked sea bass was ok, the agnolotti dal plin and simple pizza margherita were good, but the risotto was terrible. It took a while to get bread and wine. Just a little bit of an off night I guess.
One of the best pizza's I've ever had!
Simply put in the title, the margarita pizza was phenomenal! The sauce was full of flavor and the crust was very tasty. Also the service was great, the waiter was very attentive and very helpful with recommendations and informing of the fresh selections of the day. Everything is organic from the farmers markets in the local area. Great restaurant and experience all around.
Genuine Northern Italian
I always liked the Northern Italian food better, but it's not as common in Italian restaurants (less pastas, more clever use of fresh ingredients). The Chef (Donato, of course) is amazing and is always happy to see my kids when we eat there - he has an amazing memory for people and makes us feel welcome. The food is stellar, especially the prix fixe menu.

I have been disappointed that the risotto has changed. I really enjoyed the pork risotto and now the duck is more like a duck au vin than confit duck with risotto. That last visit , we waited over 45 min to recover our entrees. The waiter apologized but said he needed more time for a Chicken entree and he wanted everything served at once. Made sense. But he served the chicken and the rest of the party waited around 5 min to be served their entrees We come often to donato to enjoy good service and good food and hope things are not changing
Enjoy it every time!
I don't get here often, but am never disappointed when I do. The food is consistently good, better than many nearby restaurants. And I like the service and ambiance. I've never been there on a warm enough evening to sit outdoors, but I imagine it would be quite pleasant. My only complain is that wines by the glass are quite pricey!

Booked a table for birthday dinner & decided to have an early reservation which was delightful. Such a beautiful interior with amazing details & had a lovely table. Service was fantastic & had attentive waiter who was so patient and had given us excellent recommendations for the wine and menu. Started with platter of antipasto - amazing. Ordered the roast chicken entree and didn't disappoint. also had the fish special of the evening. We were a table of 4 friends who needed to catch up on lives so didn't leave until 9:30. Dessert was delivered for birthday girls and was really nice touch. Well worth the price and ambience! Will be back soon!

Food arrived cold on a very slow day for lunch
Food was very disappointing. Went into lunch on a very slow Thursday. No more than 20 people in the restaurant. I ordered the sole. Took about 20 minutes to get our food. Fish arrived cold and flavorless. I hate restaurants that are so pretentious to not have salt and pepper on the table and serve flavorless food. The rice that came with the fish had a very fishy taste and smell to it. Difficult to swallow and breath in.

Made a reservation well in advance for Valentine's Day. Despite doing this, the restaurant seemed to have overbooked as I was told the wait would be at least 15 minutes (along with several customers waiting who also made reservations). We ended up sitting outside since it wasn't too cold and we were able to sit right away. Despite the hiccup, the food and service was outstanding.

Creative menu, but didn't taste very good, it's bland but tastes healthy... Excellent service!
Good food and people watching
The food and service were pretty top notch. The portions were a bit small and the fish a little dry but overall great food and atmosphere. I feel bad for our server because two old money women, sitting next to us, were harassing him and looking for excuses to not tip him. They were talking loudly about how they were waiting for more members of their family and possible suiters to die and receive their rightful inheritance. Fairly sad. The very nice Italian waiter was patient when the lady harassed him. I would not have been so calm. Great experience!
Great food, great value!
We went here for Valentine's Day and it was perfect! My favorite part of the menu is that you have the option to order food a la carte or select the fixed four course menu. We decided to go with the four courses and it was definitely the right move. Each course was delicious and I was so full by the end that I couldn't finish the last dish. This place is a true gem for the quality of food, atmosphere, and price. We are definitely coming back to enjoy some of the a la carte options next!
Solid Valentine's Day Eve Spot
Took the wife here for a night out the day before valentine's day. I ordered the braised lambshank, and my wife got the red trout. We also split calamari and brussel sprouts to start. The appetizers could have used a bit more seasoning, our rosemary brussel sprouts didn't have much rosemary, and the beans than came with the calamari seemed under seasoned as well (and I'm usually low-salt kind of person anyway). We ended up using some of the pesto spread that came with the bread, so that rounded that out. Service was good, wished we had room for dessert, the ones at the adjacent table looked delicious
Very nice service, food, wine
It is a high quality lunch location - will be back to test the dinner.

This restaurant is static in its food and shows little or no care in keeping standards high. It is just cruising in neutral. No innovation. The "classics" are not well done. No reason to return when there are many more vibrant places.
Great 6 course chefs tasting menu for 6th time
Gracious service, awesome value, terrific variety...I've brought groups big and small for the 6 course chefs tasting menu and there have been few repeats. Just goes to show the chef is never phoning it in, is always pushing for originality and innovation.
Our favorite Italian place on the peninsula
Had a light meal with a 1997 Sassicaia which was delicious. The bruschetta bread was soggy. All the other appetizers were good. The past with truffles was great as was the Branzino

Authentic place for business and friends' dinner
This was my second time dinning in the Donato Enoteca, and I can just say all positive about the whole experience. The place is great, stuff is very friendly and pleasant, the food is delicious and the wine choice is pretty good. I would definitely go back for an official business dinner, or for a date, or just with friends, the place is wonderful. Thank you for the very positive experience!
MY date saw Donato Enteca a while back and has wanted t otry it so we did for lunch and it was wonderful. Service was impeccable, and the food was to die for. It was quiet enough to have an intimate conversation, so all in all we could not have done better. And only about a 10 minute walk from the Caltrains station.

I've eaten here before and had a great experience. On this occasion the food was mediocre. We both had the lamb shank and it was bland, lacked flavor. The octopus appetizer was great. Good wine selection. Service was extremely slow, we finally declined our dessert, we were tired of waiting. We spoke to the manager who was very concerned l. He apologized and comped our meal. I will give them one more chance to redeem themselves.
Very Good Food
Choice, quality and quantity of food were excellent. Despite a reservation we were seated near the entrance in a noisy and draft passage. We would have expected a table with a tablecloth in any of the nice dining rooms. Service was ok (waiter/kitchen forgot our contorni). We'd love to give a higher rating if these points had not happen.
affordable high end dining
great food and atmosphere. not bad prices for top notch food.
Average experience...service was a bit slow
Had a business group dinner here and had a pleasant time. Food was average. Service a bit slow and uneven. One of our party did not get her meal at the same time as all others...kind of awkward. I had the feeling they forgot to prepare it (pasta dish) and they had to whip it up in a hurry.
