Consuelo Mexican Bistro Ratings and Reviews
Great drinks/guac, lousy food
We hadn't been here for a while due to negative past experiences, but decided to give it a shot for brunch. The drinks and guacamole were excellent, and then it was downhill from there. The eggs were terrible and a small portion, the potatoes were mushy and flavorless, and the beans were a smashed black mess. The tacos were ok, but were full of onions (not mentioned in menu) and the salad that came with it was only a few bites. Neither entree was worth the price. Service was spotty as the wait staff was overwhelmed. It took a while before a host showed up to seat us as well as too long to get our order taken. Some requests (ex. sugar for iced tea) needed to be repeated since the person asked forgot. I guess I would return if it were just for drinks and appetizers, but I will not waste time and money on their poor quality main dishes again.
Dissapointing for Santa Row caliber
My Ceasar salad was a hodgepodge with no focus I was overcharged for Added shrimp ( should have been 5 and he charged 10) Inattentive waiter- too loud for family of 4 Enchiladas were lack luster
Celebrated my wife's birthday with a group of about 16 and the staff at Consuelo handled it amazingly. The food was great, service was exceptional and even the price was great. Will definitely go back.
Got food poisoning after eating here :( I would comment on the slow and sloppy service but why.
horrible service. never received our drinks
horrible service, cold food, never received drinks. waited 30 minutes before our server asked if we wanted something to drink. Will not recommend this place nor go back to it. EW! Not energetic, but could not submit review without selecting something. It was LOUD and uncomfortable.
Great Birthday Celebration
We sat on the sidewalk which is always entertaining. The staff was very attentive and went out of their way to provide great service. Highly recommend their tableside guacamole with their three special salsas. Great selection of margaritas. The fajitas really surprised us. The portion was too much for two and the steak and chicken were tender and flavorful. Adding the chorizo on the side really was unique and we found we loved mixing with the other meats. This is a great fun place.
As always food is awesome.
But the service from head waiter was horrible! I feel bad shorting on tip cause bus boys and rest did great job.
Consuelo's- where are the handmade tortillas
We had not been here in over 8 years or so. It used to be tapas style and had amazing handmade tortillas that came with the guacamole. No mas. Now it is just your traditional American/Mexican menu. Not bad, just kind of boring. But, the sangria was tasty! Service was excellent. * Plastic insert in the mocahete for guacamole=tacky.
Server was slow to come for initial order, than after she took our order for drinks, she came back to ask us if we wanted any drinks. Food came and she offered some tortillas, she never came back with them, never offered to refill water

It had been a while since I had been but had always LOVED it before. The food now is not as flavorful. I receomended the lamb shank to a client who I brought and it was just this hunk of meat with no sides or embellishment at all. It looked very unappealing and unappetizing; too bad, it used to be one of my favorites. Service slow even though it was not crowded on a Tuesday night. We had brought clients and had to keep flagging down our waitress. If she had paid us more attention, the bar bill would have been much higher. Not sure if I would come again which is sad.

The service was slow and they didn't see to have enough servers but the place wasn't packed either. We went for lunch. Food was ok but it wasn't the best place for lunch since they didn't have enough servers.
Nice ambiance but mediocre food. On the bland side. Just nothing special.
Brunch is the word
Sat outside for brunch at Consuelo Mexican Bistro and loved the atmosphere of people watching while soaking in the morning sun. The server was very attentive and kept the bottomless mimosa's flowing. We were served chips with a selection of spicy, savory and sweet dips before our entrees arrived. They were nice. Our entrees were tasty. Everything on the menu looked yummy!

Great corn tortillas, lamb shank was middling and 2-note (could use some brightness to offset heaviness of meat and beans), great shrimp in salad, guacamole was bland and under-seasoned. Server was really friendly and attentive.

I went here with some friends hoping for a breakfast burrito and for some reason they didn't have them at the time which was a little disappointing. Food was OK and service was about the same. I'd probably go back for drinks with friends then go elsewhere for a meal.
Subpar Dining Experience
We had a party of 10 for my 15-year old daughter's birthday at 4:45 on a Sunday evening. The service was incredibly slow . . . our server told us that they were short staffed and it showed. Also, we had a few requests to deviate from the menu . . . the server said no to every request. To top it off, the food was rather bland and not at all good.
Really disappointed since last time we dined here!
We've dined at Consuelo 4-5 times over the past 3 years. The last time was @ a year (perhaps longer) ago and boy has the quality of the food declined! It used to be special to have your own dish of guacamole created tableside--server added each separate ingredient, asked what degree of "heat" you desired, and mashed it all together in the Molcajete Bowl. True it was kinda a touristy, hokey thing but fun to watch as you sipped a Margarita or Tequila shot. Now the avocado is presented tableside pre-cut (which means it's been dosed with lemon so it can sit around awhile & not brown), other ingredients are pre-cut, and wham bam the whole "experience" is over in @3". I dunno, perhaps I'm getting old, but this used to add to the pleasure of dining @ Consuelo. Food was nothing special either--we both ordered carnitas dinner--just big chunks of meat (generous portion), microwaved black beans, bland rice. Midway through our meal, my partner & I agreed we probably would not be returning to Consuelo again. Our server, though friendly, was distracted and it took awhile to get our check even when she knew we were waiting for it. Sad.
Nice little corner restaurant
Went down for lunch with a couple of friends. Quiet going in, bar was quiet and a few people in the dining area. Had cocktails and brews to start. Good Margarita but small for the price, need to make a 16 or 20 oz Margarita. Had Guacamole made at the table and it was fabulous. The sauces for the chips were also fabulous. A Great variety of flavors for the chips and my three bay shrimp tacos. Ordered the cheese dip and it was good on everything. The bill was about $50 each, a bit much but it was good eats. The Best part of the restaurant was the Waiter. Beyond fabulous. . .he was right there for ALL of our requests and keep us filled with chips and salsa. Courteous and efficient, one of the BEST waiters that I have seen in a restaurant.
I ordered a salmon dish purported to be garnished with huitlacoche but when the dish arrived, there was no huitlacoche present. It was the blandest dish I've ever eaten in a Mexiacn restaurant. When I pointed out the absence, they brought a small dish but not until my meal was almost gone. It did add a bit to the flavor but overall I was unimpressed. The food is very over-priced. I was marked as a no-show and had to contact open table to correct it. The best I can say about Consuelo is that the location is excellent.
Great food and service!

They closed early pretty much as soon as they seated us, so they rushed the dinner and the desert that I ordered which was supposed to be hot, seemed to be half frozen. Not too thrilled, the main course was good though. Service mediocre.

The dish I ordered "carne asada" brunch with potatoes, beans & Spanish rice was very dry. Not much taste. I was not happy with the service either. After I studied the menu and decided what to eat I was informed by my waitress that the dish I selected was not available. I asked the waitress if she had informed me that there were certain dishes that were not available before I checked out the menu and she said she had forgotten to do so. I was very disappointed. I also asked her to bring me a glass of water with no ice and she brought me water with ice. This is the second time I have eaten at Consuelo's and the first time the service was also inadequate. The first time I ate at your restaurant my friend and I waited a long time before we got our check. We kept looking for our waiter and he was standing around by the kitchen talking. G.T.

Good food but service is still uneven. Too bad they no longer do the wonderful warm tortillas with the salsa.
Rice was undercooked. No salt in food. Waiter did not come to serve for a long time. And when he came , he was impatient. Food was bland. We chose this restaurant for a Fathers Day treat. Will never come back
Great spot! It's all about that tequila ;) the service was good but the food really got me.

No dressing on my salad. Chicken was dry. I wish this place would be consistent. Too hit or miss. Prices out of line for what is served. Tables were sticky as well as flatware.
comedy of errors
It took 20 min to get iced tea, the service was frighteningly poor, but the food was decent.

Consuelo's really dropped the ball
We were seated and the appetizers came quickly. The drinks, however, were nowhere to be seen until the appetizers were nearly gone (accompanied by water, not beer or mojitos or margaritas). Drinks finally came at the tail end of appetizers, or at least five out of six came with the last one lost somewhere, not to appear for another ten minutes. In the meantime we flagged down a passing bus person to bring us napkins and forks, the latter for the ceviche which you really can't eat with your fingers. The entrees came out before the appetizers were done or cleared but there wasn't a tortilla to be seen (or a server). With a little help, again from the bus staff (who seem to at least have a clue) we finally got tortillas, but the fajitas were a little cool by then and the plates for the couple who was sharing them only arrived after yet another effort to get someone's attention and at least two requests. No hope for second drink orders, although one did arrive after the entrees were cleared, along with an extra margarita that nobody ordered and the server just dumped on the table without explanation. We brought out of town guests because they don't have much in the way of Mexican food where they come from. It was lovely to sit outside and the food was reasonably good although I miss the pipian and the guacamole prepared table side. But I wouldn't go back because to say the service was indifferent would be kind. You couldn't help but notice that the bus staff was Spanish speaking and somewhat helpful. The person who was supposed to serve us had probably never stepped foot in Mexico or for that matter a Mexican restaurant in her entire life, and on top of that was hopelessly inept. Somebody ought to rethink how they hire and staff. And if it is necessary to have English speaking people in the front of the house, know that it is not sufficient. They need to know how to wait on tables.
Food was just ok.
I had been here several times, years ago, and returned with a group after I had raved about place. Unfortunately the food presentation and food did not meet my expectations. It didn't look good and the food was just ok. I expected better since that is what I had in the past. In the past, I liked the authentic Mexican hot chocolate and handmade tortillas. It appears that Consuelo's has done away with that. We got the tortillas only after we asked. I Also the aguas frescas were not tasty. They were carbonated which is just weird.

Great location, but that's it
This restaurant was suggested by a friend. After our disappointing dinner I asked him about it and he said that it looked like it should have been good, but he never actually ate there. I brought a group of 8 people and all but one said that is was a big disappointment. We were there on a Sunday, so maybe their 1st team was not working that day. Unfortunately, I don't see myself giving them a second chance. There are too many other choices in the area. We should have stayed with a few of our tried and true choices. I still gave it 3 stars because I still think it has potential. Hopefully they can make a few minor changes to their menu and the training of their staff. If the service was good, I would have mentioned it, but very inattentive and no personality. At least he could have mixed in a smile or two. We just felt that he absolutely hated his job and didn't want to be there.

Great food for the whole family -need I say more
The whole family ate to the point we couldn't breathe. Love eating here. Guacamole is made fresh and killer flavors. It comes with chip but you can ask for the homemade tortilla. Yummy. Camarones con Reboso - shrimp cooked to perfection wrap in cheese and bacon. Bite sized love. Veggie Tacos - great for the vegetarian out there. Arroz blanco con plátanos fritos - completes the meal with sweetness, sour cream and rice Aqua frescas - fresh fruit, sugar cane. whateve flavors they have, get it. At the end, my young kids and us leave with a full belly and the top pants button unbuttoned with a smile on our face.
