Everything about Capannina is soft and subtle. The decor - celadon green upper walls, ambra marble below, handmade glass lamps, hanging mirror panels and faux columns that glow from the lights behind them - is simple yet striking. The marble, the lamps, and many of the ingredients used in the excellent dishes are all imported from Italy and the subtle softness of the interior extends to the food: eclectic Italian with an emphasis on Southern Italian tradition while still maintaining well-orchestrated choices from all over Italy. With pasta made in-house and delightfully fresh buffalo mozzarella coming from Italy, Capannina offers the essence of subtlety in the artistic presentation of its menu, along with an atmosphere that conveys the slightest California touch. PLEASE NOTE: We serve a prefix menu, consisting of a three-course dinner for $25 per person every day from 5pm to 6pm. Thereafter, we serve a regular menu. Black and white truffles imported from Itali & a seasonal menu.

Good Italian restaurant
Small lively place, appears as if a local neighborhood spot. Service was good, rushed to get our order in. Said kitchen is small. My only issue is I did not think food anything special, average Italian meal. We had a great night with our friends but would try another Italian restaurant before returning.
Awesome food, not quite 'date-night' though
Based upon some other reviews I thought the place might be more intimate; a good place for date night with my wife. While the food and service are excellent, it definitely is a louder, more social of a place.
Authentic Caprese cuisine
A gem on Union Street, with the best papardelle with cingale sugo I've had outside of Italy, and a very knowledgeable owner and server (Sergio) who know wines and food to a T. Go there, and don't miss the specials!
Superb fish. Great advice on wine.

Birthday dinner at Capannina was THE BEST!
Returned to Capannina for my birthday dinner (with hubby and our 12 yr old) because we had such a memorable experience our first time dining there (which had been on a whim). I highly recommend Capannina if you are looking for authentic Italian cuisine and a relaxed atmosphere. Even our 12 yr old son loves the Pappardelle with Mushrooms and Wild Boar Ragu! They offer an excellent 3 course prix fixed menu for $30 that is an incredible value. Hands down our favorite (new) place to come for dinner when we play in the city. I highly recommend it!!
FAVORITE spot in the area
This place never fails, food, service, atmosphere.
Old time Italian restaurant with good value
Enjoyed our meal here. It definitely had large portions and the food was definitely good. Enjoyed it and recommend it. It is old time Italian without the fu-fu stuff, and very good food.

Another amazing meal at this restaurant. Keep going back, and back, and back again and it only gets better. Thank you again for a wonderful evening celebrating my moms birthday.
Delicious food, excellent service, cozy, overall experience positive all around. It was my first time here. Will definitely return. Fixed price menu 5-6pm a very good value.

Perfect place for great food and very comfortable atmosphere. Your every need is met with attentive service. We were there to celebrate my daughter's birthday and they joined in with song and a candle on her gelato! Very special. We can't wait to get back. The only problem is parking, so bring comfortable shoes to hike in when you finally find a parking space.

The service was more wonderful than I expected! The food was delicious and the desserts were all good too! I sampled some of everything so I could give an informed review! Ha ha! This is a lovely place for diner.
Great preparation - questionable food sources
I profess I am as interested in the quality of the food itself as well as the way it is prepared and how it tastes. The ciopino I had was superb. I loved it. MY friends Chilean Sea Bass came up as Corvina sea bass on the bill. I know the difference. We asked "Is the chicken organic or at least free range?" Our waiter looked and responded "Well, it is from Texas. " That is an answer - and if you don't mind - then I can say the chicken looked delicious and I bet it tasted great. We had the gluten free pasta with the goat ragu – it was delicious – although if you know your pasta – rigatoni was the gluten free substitute for paparedelle, just saying… And at the end of a meal - I love a cup of coffee with half and half - I got milk. Milk just doesn't cut it, for me. So that's it. How picky are you? If taste is your end - go for it.

Fabulous authentic Italian food
The food was so, so delicious! Truly authentic as anything I've ever had in North Beach. The service was warm, friendly and attentive. We felt welcome and well care for. We'll definitely return to Campanina the next time we are in the Marina.
My husband's meal -- the caesar with crab and tuna on shrimp risotto -- was delicious. My butternut squash soup was great. But my salmon was pretty awful. I ordered the pesto-crusted salmon. But since I don't like fennel sauce or green beans, I asked for a different sauce and spinach for a veggie, if possible. When it arrived, not only was there no substitute for the fennel sauce, there was no pesto! it was plain salmon that was overcooked. They substituted spinach, which was absolutely flavorless. I've been to Capannina several times. I don't know if the waiter misunderstood my order or what. He did bring a dish of pesto sauce to put on top of the salmon. But it's not the same as roasting the salmon with the pesto. The salmon would have been more tender. I'd still go back and try again. But this was really disappointing.

Great, friendly service. Food was delicious! Loved the pesto herbs brought with the bread and my tortellini was AMAZING. Will definitely be back

They did an amazing job with every dish enhancing the delicate flavors of the octopus and Chilean Sea bass with an infusion of grilled smoke and light coulee on the dishes. Bueno!!
Overall - great, but service was slow
The waiter offered us water, but we didn't get water for a while. We order two decaf coffee, but they never came.
Such a great experience
We took a friend to celebrate his 75th birthday, and it was our first time at the restaurant. The server, originally from Sicily, was particularly outstanding, including bringing us an off-menu bottle of terrific wine at a great price. The food was excellent. I've rated the place as "quiet" because only some of the tables were occupied on this particular Monday night. Give it a try; you'll love it.

Well prepared, and delicious food, attentive and friendly service. Wonderful early bird menu between 5 and 6 pm. Highly recommended.
We had a very positive experience at this restaurant. The food was delicious and the service was quick and courteous.
Always a favorite, never disappoints
Capannina is gem. Likely our favorite Italian restaurant in The City. A place where we take locals and visitors alike. The food is delicious, the wine list perfect and the wait staff so knowledgeable that you can just put yourself in their hands. All except for the desert which must be tiramisu--so good that we'll send for a tray when having a dinner party at home!

Good food in a nice neighborhood
The place was packed on a Friday night, as you would expect, even though it's been drizzling all day and wet outside. The food was good as expected, according to the reviews I read. This restaurant was also recommended by a friend who appreciates good food. The only slightly negative point was that we felt a little rushed at the end when the guy was cleaning up the tables. The guy was in such a hurry to clean that he was ready to grab the bread plate away even though my friend was still nibbling on his bread. But I would say the delicious food made up for all that and I would still highly recommend this restaurant.

Once again, an outstanding evening! My guests had never been here and they thought that this was perhaps the best Italian food they'd ever had. Our waiter Sergio was terrific!! There are a myriad of great restaurants in SF, but whenever I have guests I want to impress, Capannina is the place we come. It's not stuffy or formal -- it's simply a cozy, pretty restaurant with lots of personality and wonderful food.
Not our idea of a good time
The service was horrible. We ordered our dinner and 1 minute later the salads arrive. We asked them to hold off on our entrees which they did. But when we said go ahead, they came in 5 minutes. Nothing was cooked fresh. The pasta was so overcooked; maybe they don't understand the words al dente??? Also, the ragu tasted like it came out of a jar.

Every time I go to Capannina, I'm amazed that it took me so long to go back. Michaele is just a wonderful host, and the food is terrific, to say nothing of the staff. I'm so happy that the restaurant continues to be successful!!!!
We took another couple and all ordered different entrees. Everyone was delighted with their meals, and 3 of us had the warm chocolate cake with hazelnut gelato (and I would eat another one right now if I could.) Just the right amount of attention for wait and bus staff.
San Fran favorite
Absolutely love the food at Capannina! I've had many of the dishes and they are all incredible. You won't be disappointed and the staff is knowledgeable and attentive. Ask for Sergio or Gaspar. They'll fix you right up. It's a little loud and often warm, but who cares? The food is wonderful.
Great little restaurant on Union Street
This cozy little restaurant on Union Street features a lovely Italian menu with lots of truffle dishes (at least when I visited it). Seafood seems to be their specialty, but they also serve red meat, poultry and vegetarian dishes. The friendly staff ensures that you'll have a memorable dining experience.
Outstanding all around
Very authentic food and great service. Would definitely recommend venturing away from Little Italy and trying this place. Big wine list.
Wonderful ambiance, great service, and truly excellent food -- and I say this as someone who used to live in Italy. Can't wait to go back!
Loved everything about it!
The evening was perfect. Our family went on our annual holiday trip to San Francisco. It was a bonus that it was on Union-a short walk from the Cow Hollow Inn where we always stay. It is a pretty, cozy restaurant and the food was divine! I had melt in your mouth sand dabs and the flavors were outstanding. Service was flawless as well. Couldn't have asked for a better experience!
