Caffe Gelato Ratings and Reviews
Overall I always enjoy Cafe Gelato! This was a last minute business dinner meeting with a group of 10. Our server Megan was perfect, fast and polite. Thanks for the job well done!!!
A little pricey but very good
We had not been in many years until last night. The evening started off on the wrong foot because they were busy and it took a while to get seated in spite of our reservation. After that, the maitre D' was accommodating, our server was attentive, service was fast, and the food was excellent. Some of the food items are pricier than we are used to, but we ended up splitting the antipasti and the lobster and shrimp gnocci and still had plenty of leftovers to take home. Bottled beer prices are also very reasonable and it looks like they have some nice happy hour specials. Be aware that it can get a bit loud.
Waited 30 minutes despite having a reservation
They to ramp up their service. Long wait to get seated despite having a reservation. Server come by nail 15 minutes after we got seated. Food partially made up for the poor service.
Very Pleasant Dinner
Three of us had dinner before attending a Delaware Rep show. Ate outside partly because the noise inside was deafening. We all had pasta which was DELICIOUS.

I've eaten here many times. The food is SO good I keep going back. However the service can lease something to be desired. Have waited to be greeted, waited 15 mins for a cocktail only to be told they were out of Bombay Sapphire. Asked for something different and waited another 10 mins. Folks at the table asked for Ice Tea and that took 15 mins. Forks were removed and not replaced, etc. Bus boys were reaching in to take plates while some of us still had a fork in our hand. That sort of service. I get they are all college kids but they are poorly trained in proper table service and for their prices, the service should be better. On April 17 we were a party of 8 and our waitress was much better. She was on top of everything and very pleasant. We were actually surprised but pleasantly so.
A "Go To" For Special Occasions
This is a "Go To" for my wife and I in Newark, DE, the home of the Fightin' Blue Hens of the University of Delaware. We have often celebrated birthdays here. It has never disappointed. The offerings are original and the restaurant is lively during dinner hour.
A great brunch with good service!
We had a nice brunch at Cafe Gelato. I also had the pleasure of having lunch there. I had the farmer burger which was good. The truffle fries that came with it were better! My guest had the scallop watercress salad which was well prepared and tasted great. In general the brunch here is better than lunch.
Great food, service lacking
On a friday night, it looked like they were understaffed, or misdirected. Many staff seemed new, long wait before someone realized they were our waiter. Other than the average Caesar salad, food was outstanding, tasty, appropriately sized, with a killer gelato to end the meal
Party of 4
Had a very nice time at Caffe Gelato! Server was very attentive but not overbearing. Appetizers of Calamari and Antipasto Platter were excellent. My dish was not the best...Cocoa Roasted Pork Tenderloin wasn't the best...it was very dry. Dessert was excellent.

The service was excellent. There was no wait on anything and no confusion. Water was refilled with no conversation. The food is excellent and has a variety. I got the featured mushroom soup with truffle oil and garlic, then scallops. The entree was buttery with a nice side of asparagus and lentils, carrots and bacon. I finished the meal with a 20 year tawny port. It was buttery with a hint of almonds.
Caffe Gelato is always terrific.
We love dining at Caffe Gelato. Other have recommended it for years, and we will. tool The food is innovative and delicious. Always served at its peak. The service itself is impeccable. And we always save room for Gelato!
Overall, pretty durned good.
I think the food is delicious, but portion sizes are a bit small and we were both hungry two hours later. This is a great upscale place in Newark - we save it for special occasions because it is a bit pricey.
Great Food/Nice Location
This restaurant is located on Main Street in Newark which seems to be the happening block in town. The food was delicious, and the gelato fantastic. I recommend it for a family gathering. It was a bit noisy since there seemed to be a party going on with a guitarist. Otherwise, we had a great time.

Awesome anniversary dinner!
Food was great. I have Celiac Disease and they were very accommodating. Server even brought me my own bread before dinner. Mark was an awesome server. Very friendly and attentive. We will be back!
Perhaps a little disappointed
I recently ate at Cafe Gelato to celebrate my wife's birthday. We've dined there in the past and have always enjoyed our meals and service. However, this time we waited 20 minutes beyond reservation time to be seated, although walk-ins were seated rapidly (we were a party of 4). Then we waited another 10 minutes for anyone to show-up to wait on us. Things got better as the evening went on, and we enjoyed the food. However, I will say that the prices have gone up for both wine and entree's and it was not the experience we were expecting and hoping for.
Bad Service overshadowed our food
The hostess was clearing and cleaning tables when we arrived, even though there were waiters sitting around chatting. We waited for over five minutes up be greeted. Our hot appetizers came out before our cheese board. Then five minutes later our dinner came out they were trying to take our appetizers and cheese board which we hadn't finished. We had no new utensils either and they seemed annoyed to get us a new knife or spoon. The food was fine but because of service would not return. The gelato was fantastic and worth it to walk in and grab.

Food was excellent as always. Not particularly pleased with the seating--too close to kitchen, table too small for even only two people. Noise level is always high but not unexpected in a smaller, crowded restaurant.
Dinner with Mom
Food was excellent. I had the steamed clams and paella. Mom had the steamed mussels. The steamed seafood was yummy as usual (I take the leftover broth home to use with pasta). The paella wasn't the traditional crusty bottom and had a stray shrimp shell in it, but was still very good. It was quite loud the night we were there and being seated next to the kitchen didn't help. The service was good, but was perhaps a bit inexperienced since we had to ask for bread and something to put our empty shells in. We ended the meal with the coconut tart and gelato -- both excellent. The lighting is not for the visually impaired -- so you might want to bring a mini light with you. Will definitely visit again -- in fact we will be celebrating Mom's 80th birthday there!!
wonderful valentine's day 7 course dinner
each course was delicious, very nice presentation, wine included was an excellent match for the food, were not rushed at all. we loved it!
Valentine's Day - Well done!
Our son graduated UD a few years back. We always loved Caffe Gelato. We took a one night getaway at the nearby Marriott and made reservations for the set Valentine's Day menu. It was seven courses, all excellently prepared and delicious. $69 prix fixe included a glass of champagne and a bottle of wine!! But most importantly, on this, one of the craziest holidays to eat dinner out, the service was great - not rushed and very attentive. We will try and get back again and we live more than 100 miles away in NJ!!
Great Special Occasion Spot
We went for Valentine's dinner. They had a violin player who was very talented. The entrance was super crowded and awkward. I didn't realize you only had very few dinner choices considering the holiday BUT our meals were really good and the service was outstanding. They also handed me a rose before we left. I can't wait to go on a regular night and order off the main menu! I've had their pistachio crusted chicken breast from a catering order and it was out of this world.
Caffe Gelato is our favorite restaurant! Superb!
Our Valentine's Day brunch was perfect! The selection was varied and everything was delicious. The sweet little gelato parfait at the end of the meal hit just the right note!
Valentine's Day Brunch
Food and service was good. Orange Juice was terrible though, yikes.
I have been dining here for years and years, but have noticed a trend toward bad service. My experience on Sat evening was terrible. Waitress - Emily - was not good at all. Ordered wine - watched as it sat on bar for 10 min + and she finally brought it over. Received cheese board appetizer and took 2 bites and entree was served by another wait person. He apologized. She never even came by until the very end. I told her about experience and all she said was "oh well, i guess you now have a treat you can have later - want me to box up your appetizer?" All in all very disappointed and probably won't go back as I think there are other alternatives that have great food and wonderful service.
Cafe Gelato has excellent food that you don't have to travel 50 minutes to find. Love having this quality of restaurant so close to home.

Busy night so we weren't sat for about 30-40 minutes despite having a reservation. No big deal b/c we were in no hurry and got seats at the bar. Owner and staff accommodating. Bartender could have been more attentive. Bar was also out of the first two beers I ordered. No big deal. Wife's order was wrong but server corrected (his mistake we believe) pretty quickly. Server said he'd be back with cheese and pepper for salads but never did. We like this place and fortunately usually have a birthday or anniversary coupon that is a great deal. So, didn't mind some less than perfect experiences this time. Great restaurant.
Great Food and wine, and a special room
Caffe Gelato always seems to be jammed when we go there. We always book ahead, and tonight, we got our own private room for our party of 5 - in their wine "cellar." The food was very good from start to finish, our waiter was unobtrusive and well-versed, we enjoyed a nice Chardonnay while looking over its competition, and we all had great deserts- mostly gelato, of course. A very pleasant evening, made all the more so by the quiet that allowed normal conversation.

A little pricey for our budget, so we savor the experience on special occasions a few times a year. Entrees are amazing! Drinks are delish! And you must save room for the gelato - my primary motivation for coming here!!! I only wish the martinis were to the brim - addition of the sidecar only brought the glass to 90% full.
Over Priced Average Italian Restaurant
Caffé Gelato tries to be an upscale Italian restaurant, but is really just average on food and lacking on service. The atmosphere is standard restaurant fare with takeout up front and an updated bar area. A substantial but pricey wine list is available. We thought the house cabernet was good but expensive at $9 a glass. A very nice toasted light bread before the meal came with just unseasoned olive oil. Too many salty olives overwhelmed the small appetizer salads. The raspberry vinaigrette dressing was good. The cheese ravioli with garlic cream sauce and added chicken breast was ample and tasty but expensive at $28. The lump crab and sautéed shrimp tossed in ‘crab rosa’ sauce over capellini was a little bland, but otherwise acceptable. We found the service to be rather slow taking 2 hours start to finish. Don’t expect a quick in and out. Overall, we thought our experience was satisfactory, but over priced. Would we come back? Maybe, but only with a substantial discount.
Great dining experience
A group of nine of us went to Cafe Gelato to celebrate several team members work anniversaries. We requested the room downstairs for privacy since we tend to get loud when we get together! The table was set beautifully and we had two waiters waiting on us for food and drinks. The service was great and the food was excellent, so much so, we asked the waiter to convey our appreciation to the chef. This was a lovely dining experience. I would definitely recommend!

Our experience was exceptional. The staff there was attentive and knowledgeable. They were able to give menu suggestions as well honest opinions on the dishes they suggested. The dishes we had smelled delightful and tasted amazing.
it was great
Took my son for his birthday. He was disappointed at first since the menu contained mushrooms and asparagus, but then found the veal which he loved. Other son had filet mignon which he loved. I had my usual salmon which was very good.
Whether celebrating a special occasion, enjoying a romantic date night, or catching up with an old friend, Caffe Gelato is my "go to" restaurant. The food, the service and the atmosphere never disappoints.

Another great meal at Cafe Gelato. This was a dinner with our in-laws to celebrate Christmas and New Years. For the first time we were seated in the background which made for a much quieter evening, as the front bar and main dining area were hopping. Service by Savannah was cheerful and attentive. The food was piping hot when it came out and all meals were well prepared and flavorful. We had fish, mussels, and pasta, and of course a peanut butter cup sundae to finish. On the way out I made reservations for the Father/daughter Valentine dinner. Already looking forward to it.
Exceptional Food and Service!
Wow! We live within minutes of Caffe Gelato's and this was our first visit - I'm 100% angry with myself for not going sooner. The food, seating, and service was absolutely outstanding! Since we were first-timers, we asked our waiter, Jack for recommendations. He was very knowledgeable of the menu and offered insightful information that helped us make our decisions. His personality was spot-on and made our dining experience spectacular! Our food was amazing - we had the onion soup, Lump Crab and Shrimp Capellini, and the Lobster Gnocchi - each and every bite of our meals was delicious. Portions were plentiful, sauces were perfect, and all pasta was cooked to perfection. We complimented our meal with a lovely Sauvignon Blanc - also recommended by Jack. So tasty that when the bottle was empty, we each ordered an extra glass. Normally, we don't indulge in desserts; however, we were offered a sampling of the gelato flavors and couldn't resist ordering one after tasting the deliciousness of each. We loved the seating - the round booths gave us an opportunity to have intimate conversations and belly-laughs as well. We felt like we were the only ones in the restaurant. They also have tables and I believe more seating in the back - lots of room, well spaced, just fantastic! Outside seating, too! We waited too long to visit Caffe Gelato's and have put it at the top of our monthly restaurant rotations. They also have takeout and deliver options! Jack is a gem of a waiter and we couldn't have had a more pleasant experience. In fact, the entire waitstaff had smiles and were very professional. For us, service can make or break a dining experience and we value the excellent service Jack afforded us. If you're looking for a restaurant that has phenomenal food, service, and ambiance - look no further! Whether it's a girls' night out, a romantic dinner, a family dinner, or you just want to swing in by yourself - choose Caffe Gelato's. You won't be disappointed!
New Years Eve 2015
We rang out 2015 and welcomed in 2016 at Cafe Gelato. It was a great night. The food, service and the band were all great. Once again the team at Cafe Gelato out did themselves.
Not as good as previous times
The service was extremely slow!! Food came fast but there seemed to be confusion about who our server. We waited a long time before someone came over to talk to us - we had our drinks, appetizer, and meal all ready to order because it took so long - around 10 minutes. Even then this person expressed confusion, which did not make us feel like a burden. I understand this was NYE and they were getting ready for their party; however, don't take reservations if you can't adequately serve the customers. The waiter was fine it was just the service staff in general seemed spread very thin! I ordered a scallop featured dish which was very peppery with sides that were lacking taste - I would not recommend. The pasta with steak entree was delicious though!
New Year's Eve
Caffe Gelato is my favorite restaurant and I was thrilled that they were having al a carte service before the 8:00 party. I consider myself a regular and the hostess stand has always been inside between the dining areas. However, this visit it was moved outside, out of eyesight. My mother and I stood inside for about 10 minutes before someone told us the hostess stand was outside (and the hostess walked by us several times prior to the server telling us this). We also had very little elbow room, as our table was against the wall. Other than those two things, it was the normal wonderful Caffe Gelato service and delicious food. We visited on New Year's Eve and the staff was preparing for the party that was taking place later in the evening, so I can understand why things were a little off. Will definitely visit again!!
