About Cafe Society
Celebrating 20 plus years in business, Michel Leny first opened Café Society in 1987, inspired by his father Maurice Leny, a Chef at Maxim's in Paris. October 2007 welcomed new owner, Chef Cullen Kent, graduate of Le Cordon Bleu in Paris. Cullen and Michel continue the tradition of International cuisine emphasizing Belgian influences and classic French food. Located in the heart of the beautiful Evergreen Historic District in Midtown Memphis, Café Society features innovative preparations of fresh seafood, veal, lamb and beef along with an extensive wine list for your dining pleasure. With its casual dining and bistro atmosphere, Café Society is affectionately known to many Memphians as simply "Café" and continues to be a favorite of many of its midtown neighbors.

The food was great. Hadn't been there in over 10 years. Wish the bar was smoke free
I'm a long time Evergreener and have always loved Café Society. I decided to have my partner's surprise birthday dinner here and it was fantastic. The staff helped getting the room setup for 15 people, Michel Leny checked on us several times that evening - love him!! :) Thank you very much!
We had a great lunch. We had the pasta special which was excellent. And of course we had to have the pomme frittes!! Outstanding. One of my favorite restaurants. Always good food and service.
Always a treat, and one of our favorite finds.
His short ribs melt in your mouth...and we are never disappointed with the experience.
New Easter tradition
Cafe Society is a longtime favorite. but came for our first Easter Brunch (prix fixe)at the restaurant, and it was superb. Three adults and one child, each of us ordered something different, and each of us was delighted with our meal. Great wine menu, and a perfect menu for a vegetarian child. Service was attentive and not intrusive. Thank you for a wonderful Easter Sunday.

Average Food in a Smoky Environment
We have been wanting to go to Cafe Society for a very long time. We ended up being mostly disappointed. The food was ok but overpriced for the quality. The fish I had was a bit dry and tough. My wife's was cooked properly but not as good as a few other restaurants. The one highlight was the Goat Cheese Balls, they were really great. The service was also very good, friendly, and thoughtful. The biggest drawback was the smoke that continually wafted in from the bar. Every time a server went in (which was often) smoke would come through the restaurant. Really a shame for 2016!
A Memphis Institution
Cafe Society is a long standing Memphis restaurant. On this occasion we went early before a Grizzlies game and business was slow which was good for us. We had the veal piccata and fish of the day. Both were well prepared. We had a salad and the onion soup. Soup was excellent but the salad preparer was brand new and left two ingredients off , however when this was pointed out to the server it was promptly corrected. Wine selections were nice. The chef came around and inquired about the food at each table. You can depend on having an enjoyable dining experience at Cafe Society.

The service is always great and the food is absolutely great. I've enjoyed every visit.
Date night for my wife and I. We were seated right away, we had reservations. Waitress was quick and attentive. We arrived at 6:30 and finished at 8:00. Very enjoyable relaxed time. The Mahi and scallops were the special and plenty. The house wine was perfect.

Great food, with a charming atmosphere. My wife and I had done our research, and we had guessed the chef would be great, based on his history. We were not disappointed. There was a mix-up with our food, and Michel personally came to our table to make it right. We loved this guy! Thank you, Michel, Cullen and staff for a phenomenal evening.
Perfect for a date. Absolutely wonderful servers
My wife and I came here for Valentine's Day, and had a wonderful experience. This was our second time, I think our first was for our first anniversary. The food was delicious, she had the special which I believe was Trout, and I had the 20 oz rib eye. We also had oysters for the appetizer, and the server recommended a tremendous wine. The service is exceptional, very friendly and full of great recommendations, we appreciate her personality. Very good experience overall, and will come back.
We were expecting not perfect food but decent food. The food was terrible, underseasoned, cheaply put together. The strawberries on our dessert weren't even ripe. green. Their version of duck confit was some shredded up duck and organ meat with a half of a buttered bun on top. Disgusting.
A great Valentine's Day dinner
We had 6pm reservations on Valentine's Day, and when we arrived we were promptly greeted and taken directly to our table. Our server was a delight the entire meal from start to finish...knowledgeable about the menu, the individual choices, and attentive in a busy environment without being smothering. My wife and I made the choice to start off with French Onion Soup, and we were not disappointed. As a matter of fact, we both agreed it might be the best we've ever had. Rich flavored, but not heavy, with a moderate amount of cheese on top without taking away from the wonderful blend of broth and onions. My wife's entree choice was salmon, which came with fingerling potatoes and roasted red peppers/Brussel sprouts. My choice was the scallop/mussels/shrimp combo that came in a large bowl with braised tomatoes and onions at the bottom. Good Lord. I didn't look up or breathe for the longest time. The scallops could have been seared a little more for my taste, but they were tender and succulent. The mussels and shrimp were outstanding, and those braised tomatoes and onions could have been a side dish all by themselves. We ended the meal by sharing a Brandy Alexander, which was tasty to say the least...who wouldn't love that? To live in Memphis for so long, it was our first visit, but it will not be our last...a huge tip of the chef's hat to all of the team at Cafe Society!
Pre Valentines Day Dinner
We opted to return to this restaurant because the food was so good! It was packed. We could not find our reservation with the host which was a little frustrating, but he mistakenly looked over it and fixed everything! Wait time was not that bad. I ordered a Sole type fish with butter sauce and potatoes, he order the stew with shrimp, mussels and scallops. It was so good. We will return soon, like the end of the month soon.
20 oz rib-eye for $38 overpriced! Probably only about 6-8 ozs. of eatable meat.
I ordered the "special" which was maui maui. I felt that it was overpriced considering our regular menu item (inported Salmon dish) cost less. If I had asked for the price of the special or if the server had stated the cost I would not have ordered Maui Maui - I mostly ordered this for the risotto.
Excellent Dinner experience
We booked this for a party of 10 as a special occasion. The food and service was exceptional without being fussy. My steak was perfectly cooked and based on the comments from the other members of our party, their food was cooked perfectly as well. We will definitely go back and I enthusiastically recommend this restaurant to others.
Good Food, great service and a relaxing atmosphere
Café Society offers absolutely wonderful, fresh food cooked in unique ways. The service is great and not snobby as a look at the place might suggest. The waitress pointed out specialties that were fantastic and was pleasant and professional. The tables are spread out so that you can carry on a conversation with your guests in a quiet voice. Café Society has several rooms which adds an intimacy regardless of which room you dine in. Both the owner, Michelle and the chef visit each table and are genuinely interested in your experience, which is very refreshing. The crème Brule was the best thing I've ever eaten. I will go back again just for it!
in all, a very enjoyable meal.
Our large group was given a room to ourselves. Nice for talking. The two specials I had, a bibb salad and the scallops, were delicious. The scallops were large and cooked perfectly. It did take a while to get our bills paid. All in all a very enjoyable meal.

Loved the creativity of the menu and the meals were very well presented. Had not been to CS for a number of years and now that we live nearby we decided to give it a try. Will certainly be back as we enjoyed the dinner greatly. Only challenge was the smoke wafting into the dining area from the bar. That we could have done without.

Hostess was not aware of our OpenTable reservation. We were seated immediately anyways, so no issues there. Otherwise, great experience and meal.
We had an excellent lunch here. The specials were outstanding (they have pizza, fish, and pasta specials every day.). And ordering off the menu is also very very good. It was quiet the day we were in there, but usually it is quite busy. Don't miss the pomme frites!!!
You can always count on Cafe Society
For over 30 years, I have celebrated birthdays, anniversaries, business lunches, and dined with friends at Cafe Society. The decor is warm, and feels like you are in a country home in Europe. Chef Kent's savory specials are delicious, and beautifully presented. Cafe Society's former owner from Belgium, Michel Leny, is often there making everyone feel welcome. On pleasant days and nights, you can also dine outside in this neighborhood mainstay. I have always been able to count on Cafe Society for a pleasant dinning experience.
New Year's Date Night.
New Year's Eve dinner with my wife. It's been a few years since we've been to Café Society and we were never disappointed on previous visits. It was nice to have the option to use the NYE menu specials or to order from their regular menu. We chose to order from the standard menu. Everything from the appetizer to entrees and dessert was excellent. The service was good and the atmosphere was just right for our romantic dinner. There was a faint odor of cigarette smoke from the bar into the dining room, which was a little odd since restaurants are under a no-smoking policy across town. Not sure how the bar gets away with this, but it was just slightly an issue. Overall, we were pleased at our visit and will return for sure.
Perfect Christmas Eve dinner with family.
Lovely wines by the glass. Sole meunière was prepared perfectly over roasted potatoes. Crab cake and scallop special was excellent. Looking forward to going back for the duck.
Have eaten at Cafe Society many times over the years. Consistently excellent! Both food & service. Nice atmosphere as well.

Great experience every time we go. Staff is attentive but not overbearing. The atmosphere is quite so that you can carry on a conversation. Each time we have been we felt as if we were family. They always greet you with a smile and a warm welcome. When leaving we are always wished a good evening. Can't wait to go back.
Great dinning place
Service and entrees were fantastic! Great neghhoob gem and the Owner ensures everyone has an excellent dining experience .
European style with a neighborhood feel
Delicious French-inspired food with a mix of traditional offerings (don't miss the frites) and well-thought-out recipes the chef has developed. The wine list is nicely curated with reasonably priced selections in addition to more extravagant offers. The staff is attentive and friendly, whether dining solo or with a group.
Great food. Great people.
First, the food was rich and delicious. Second, the entire staff, from the waiter, to the chef, to the owner, was extremely nice. Each checked on the quality of the food to ensure everything was up to their standards. Third, the venue is great for a romantic dinner. We'll be back.
Personal time and attention from the owner. Delicious food. Quiet atmosphere. And awesome staff. This is why i keep going back!
Chaotic Menu Change
The chef changed the menu on a Friday night which led to a little chaos, slow service and delayed food. We were there at 7 and they had run out of the lamb special which was a disappointment. The food was good but the dining experience was a let down. Hopefully this visit was not commonplace.
My family and I booked a reservation for Cafe Society for a celebratory dinner following my PhD graduation from UofM and it was an absolutely, hands down, great experience! We had my 8 year old niece with us, and although the menu does not list anything for kids our waiter (Cullen) was able to talk to the chef and get her some chicken nuggets (and these were no McDonald's nuggets; they were the real deal, the kind of chicken nuggets that typical grown ups would be happy to eat!). Although, in retrospect, we could have all given her a little of what each of us had ordered (she loved trying the steak and lamb!) and all of us would have been full; the portions were very large! I thought this was going to be a typical 'fancy' restaurant where the steak costs $30 and you end up with something smaller than the size of a hockey puck, but not here! Wow, the portions were huge!! The prices may seem a little high, but you definitely get your money's worth! And the food was soooooooo good... this is something you'll just have to try to really be able to understand. Steak was soft and buttery, the lamb was amazing, the scallops were outstanding and perfectly cooked; you have got to try this restaurant!! You will not be disappointed by the food. To make our experience 100% fantastic, the head chef came out and talked to us about the food and my graduation and, when we were leaving, the owner came out, talked to us about our experience, and gave me a big hug to say congratulations on graduating. It was a really nice time had by all with amazing food and wonderful people!

I can't say enough wonderful things about Cafe Society. Perfect in every way, and best dining experience in Memphis -- and that' s some terrific competition.
My husband and I had steak and lamb for entrees and they were excellent. You can always count on Cafe Society f or a good meal.
We went with another couple to celebrate our anniversaries. We hadn't been with them for a long time so it.was the perfect place to get caught up & celebrate,
