Cafe Navarre Ratings and Reviews
Most Elegant in the Area
With fois gras as a pretty small plate and fresh fish flown in daily, as well as inventive dishes like deconstructed s'mores, and creative bartenders, this is so fun! The backdrop is an old black and white bank, with a bar looking like a mahogany boat, and people draped all over it. Booths or tables, art that is changed out every so often - don't miss Cafe Navarre. If you are against fois, no worries - there is cheese or shrimp or mussels...it goes on and on and on. The servers are fun, timely, and non-intrusive. They are over-the-top helpful, and knowledgeable. Cafe Navarre offers Amish chicken (local), steaks with amazing sauces, and side dishes you will want to lick the plate for. The wine menu is just right - the cocktails are plentifully filled, and you will want to come back because it's just getting away from the world. We love Cafe Navarre.
Always Love Cafe Navarre
We always enjoy dinner at Cafe Navarre. The food is spectacular and the service is fabulous.
Great restaurant in a beautiful old bank building. The décor is nicely done; it manages to be modern and timeless at the same time. There were 7 for dinner. Everyone really enjoyed their entrees, but my short ribs were some of the best I have ever had. We sat in an odd little conference type, so next time I will request the main dining area or the bar. I plan on coming back soon. PS, a very easy walk to the Morris Theater.

Cafe Navarre is a great place for a nice meal, great service and lively atmosphere. The servers are always helpful and knowledgable abt the food and wine. We have never had a bad experience. Love the outside on a beautiful day or evening
Good food, great service.
Have been there several times. The service has always been very very good. Good food and great cocktail choices. Waitress was very knowledgeable and friendly. The Steak could have been better for the price though. Very good place for a date or special occasion.

Super cool building. Had reservations for two, place was not too busy while we were there on a Saturday night. Had drinks at bar to start, great bartender service, good drinks but then it all went down hill from there. Sat us right next to kitchen even though there were at least 5 other tables available had to request to be moved. Waiter was odd, rather than telling us specials I had to ask him and then he'd only tell us part of it and would be back to tell us the rest. I ordered pork chop dinner my husband ordered spare ribs. They were both so bad we didn't even eat a third of our plate, my pork was so fatty it was gross, plus they sliced it for presentation but there were big bone chunks in the pieces. Would not recommend.
Special date nights out
We had a very nice time here at Cafe Navarre. The food was good quality but in comparison to other restaurants we have gone to, we found the menu was limited and the entrees were pricey.

Terrific restaurant! Great use of space and interesting menu. Delighted to visit downtown South Bend and see such a vibrant place!
Fine but overpriced.
Had dinner here for the first time a few days ago. We ordered the seafood carbonara and the salmon. The shrimp in the carbonara was overdone and the plate had obviously been sitting awhile before it came out. The salmon was beautifully presented but a bit blah flavor wise and lacking salt. Berry cobbler was just okay. All in all I just felt that this meal was way too expensive for its quality. If you're going to charge $30 for an entree, it should be outstanding. Also, those three tables squeezed in at the very back are really unappealing - if you're the person facing the wall (as I was) it's kind of depressing. On a positive note, our server was super.
Consistently Good Food
Have the mushroom soup each time that I go there. Would like a little more variety in the menu selections and would suggest having off the menu specials available seasonally.

Excellent dining experience! Great food AND service! Best in S. Bend!
great lunch on a spring day
Even though it was April 1st, there was no foolin' this was a great lunch. Excellent beef stroganoff, and they were careful about our diner with food allergies too. Soup and grilled cheese is also a special treat here.
Great as usual
Great for business lunch. Privacy seating available. Food is consistently excellent. Service has always been above average and more recently seems to have improved even more. Very attentive and professional server with a good sense of humor.
This is my "go to" place for lunch, be it business or personal. I only have experience with the luncheon scene. However, I'm confident their dinners are superb, too.
The Easter menu was a special menu, limited by regular Cafe Navarre standards, but offered something for everyone....fish, ham, lamb, steak and vegan. The presentations were beautiful and the three dessert options were impressive.
Fish special never disappoints!
Fish special never disappoints!
It was a great evening! I was introducing my young nephews (ages 12 & 14) to an evening of finer dining. They had never experienced this before so I thought this would be a unique way to have them celebrate their mother's birthday! Our waitress was very patient and helpful in helping them order and giving them suggestions and instruction. My sister was treated with a birthday dessert which was a nice touch. The food experience was not a question and wonderful as always. Thank you to all..!
This was first time at Cafe Navarre and it was very good. I called for a certain table and they made it available. The bar area is very nice and the setting in a old bank is very unique. Our appetizers were very good. We ordered the beef short ribs and the filet. Both were very good, however, my filet was prepared medium well and I requested medium rare. I did not ask for a comp, but they removed it from the bill. I would definitely go back and would recommend it to all.

Food and service were incredible! We ordered the salmon and the fish special...both excellent. My granddaughter ordered from the small plates. She loved the mussels and finished the juice with the last piece of bread. Her birthday topper was strawberry gelato with a birthday candle!!! She was so pleased! The waiter was friendly, professional, and efficient! We will be back, for sure!
Cafe Navarre excellent for special occasion
Food was great. Our waiter, Tom was the best. Answered all our questions about the menu, made excellent suggestions and even knew the history of the building.
Great food and service!
This place is awesome! My wife and I had beautifully prepared food that tasted even better than it looked. Our server, Naomi, was awesome. After a great meal, we shared delicious desserts.
Cafe Navarre is a gem
Sitting near the bar at Cafe Navarre is like going back in time to a supper club. The old bank is a tile floor, clean wooden lines including staircase, the bar and some booth walls. Several high top tables along the bar make for a fun time to see people coming in. Bar is often busy. The wait staff knows their stuff - from what the drink of the day is, to what the freshly flown in fish dish is to what the best on the menu is right now. The wine list is wonderful! The cocktails are imaginative, and even the art on the walls is changed up quarterly. Features include melt-in-your-mouth beef, different salads than the norm, creatively plated specials, and delicious appetizers (even fois gras at times). Desserts are fun too. All levels of dress are seen here, but business dress is probably the best. Close to the shows and music, and fun. GO!
Great food, great service
I dined with a friend before a basketball game this past Wednesday which is the second year in a row. I think it will be a tradition. The food was excellent and our waiter was very attentive and professional. This is an outstanding restaurant.

Terrific service (Lauren) and outstanding, elegant food. Found it randomly on Open table while visiting S Bend. Definitely a diamond in the rough. Highly recommended
Amazing food in South Bend
Being from the east coast, I was pleasantly surprised to find such an excellent fine-dining type place in South Bend, IN! The food here compared very favorably to some of my favorite places in DC. The gnocchi with butternut squash and sage were light and fluffy, as well as delicious. And I also enjoyed my grilled salmon with lentils and winter root vegetables. The salmon was both crispy and yet moist. I also appreciated the very reasonably priced spirits and wine by comparison with similar-type places in DC! If I'm ever back in South Bend, I'm definitely returning to Cafe Navarre!
Dinner at Bar
Had dinner at a high-top in the bar. Not wildly busy, but, busy. Food was great. Suggestions from waitress were helpful. All the specials were wonderful. Good drinks. For my money, the best place in South Bend.

Expensive for the quality of food given..
The restaurant was more expensive than some restaurants I've gone to in Chicago that were a lot more trendy, notable, and had better service and food. Maybe it was because we went on Valentine's Day weekend, so it wasn't a huge deal, but I wish the food had been better for the price. The wine list was great though--I love a good, dry white wine. Seafood pasta too spicy for my taste and the mini piece of chocolate cake for $8 was extremely rich. Overall, though I liked the ambience and the setting. I know friends who love Cafe Navarre and it would definitely be a fun group date during the day! Also, our waitress was extremely overbearing, checking in every five minutes and she didn't seem like she had a great knowledge of the menu. Service could also be better for the price.
I am writing this review to draw attention to the meal my husband and I had on Valentine's Day. The mushroom soup was excellent as always, however it would be great if one had the choice of a cup as well as the bowl, especially at dinner. The creme brulee was also very good. The entrees were SALTY, to the point where I did not enjoy mine and neither did my husband. I had the fish special, Drum fish, and my husband had ordered the salmon. Both entrees were too highly salted to be enjoyed or finished. We mentioned this to our waitress when she asked if we wanted to box up the remainder. We both answered NO. Because we have had other excellent meals at Cafe Navarre in the past, I would still recommend the restaurant to friends, but would mention this unfortunate experience as well. I hope our next visit will be more positive.
A Good One
The food and service are excellent. Always something unique on the menu if you want to try it. Enjoyed it completely.
A great spot in downtown South Bend!
We went to Cafe Navarre to celebrate Valentines Day a day early and were not disappointed. I looked at both the reviews online and was referred to the restaurant by a few people I knew. We loved both the interior design and the food/wine! I felt that there was a wide variety of options on the menu for both the appetizers and the main courses and we both were happy with our orders. I had the salmon and my husband had the short ribs and we split the gnocchi for an appetizer. Delicious! I highly recommend this restaurant for a date night and it would also be perfect with a large group of friends. The next time we go, we will definitely sit at the bar first and share a drink before being seated at our table. Thank you Cafe Navarre for a great Valentines experience!
Good Birthday Spot
I took my boyfriend here fora late birthday present. Our server was very attentive and made the evening memorable with a slice of their delicious chocolate cake. Overall, it was a fantastic experience.
Navarre - Great
We were visiting from Atlanta and visited Cafe Navarre. Loved the feel and the friendly greeting. Has a very nice history. Our waiter was excellent. He could explain the various offerings and field questions with ease. Food was great.
