Lovely prefix menu that offered everything! Was a wonderful experience.
Just the Best
We've been to Café Matisse many times. It's always very, very good. Creative dishes with unique combinations of flavors. The atmosphere is like being sent back in time to a small café in France. Always at the top of our favorite places.
A SERIOUS DISAPPOINTMENT
The noise made conversation between my wife (her birthday, our anniversary) almost impossible. The food was not even close to justifying the 5-star reviews we see Cafe Matisse given online. Nor to endure the beyond-energetic noise level for close to two hours. Between my wife and I we were served the following "entrees": a shrimp dish containing one unremarkable shrimp; a scallop dish containing one medium-sized scallop; an octopus dish in which the octopus couldn't be found; and a minuscule crab cake with the top burned. Compounding the dissatisfaction, the menu promised flavorful-sounding accompaniments for each of the dishes; but, instead of being arranged about the plate so that one might taste each of these "enhancements" separately or in a combination of one's choice, they were served in an indistinguishable pile. And who came up with the idea of including shaved cheese on top of an octopus dish? Perhaps it was a ploy to disguise the absence of the octopus. Insult to injury: the policy of serving no bread which might at least keep one company while waiting for the food service to begin. Several years ago we had had a very good meal at Cafe Matisse. Something awful has happened since.
The food and service was outstanding! My husband and I really enjoyed dining at Cafe Matisse :)
not vegan friendly , very pricey
I had been to this restaurant a few years ago and though it was very expensive than the menu and the food was absolutely amazing, we were so excited about going back there for our anniversary and of course the food.. but when we arrived it was very different, we were put in the backroom not the nice room with the courtyard view ..we were the only patrons so its not like they were booked solid. then we were handed a menu of appetizers that's what they serve ..you pick two and a dessert ???this is considered a three course meal..and nothing on there was vegan friendly ..they offered to deconstruct the dish but what would be the point and they had offered a beets salad app. but for $70.00 per person that's insane...I didn't understand the whole thing and we left.. $140 plus tax and tip was crazy
Superb, amazing, fantastic, etc.
Hard to add anything that's already been written about this culinary masterpiece. Have experienced dining here many times and Café Matisse seems to get better and better.
It was great to try the different mixes of food. We don't eat pork so over half of the menu we could not choose from, that was disappointing.
Outstanding memorable dining
Attention to detail in every aspect. Delicious small plates comprised of so many different flavors and textures. Extremely creative and talented chef.
Fabulous, as always.
The food never ceases to amaze! The service is always spot on. Definitely our favorite special occasion restaurant.
Food Lover's Delight
The blend of the many flavors on each plate was a magnificent creation of delight. Three cheers to the chef ! Each flavor left you wanting more. A totally enjoyable eating experience. Add to that the best service around. The staff is extreamly attentive.. I looked very hard and could find nothing to complained about..... Even a little.
Been a customer of theirs for over 25 yrs. Has always been a top notch, fine dining establishment. Larry and his staff are welcoming, knowledgeable about their cuisine, and do a great job accommodating your requests. ( My wife doesn't eat shrimp, cilantro and a few other trendy ingredients ) Being a BYOB place , you can bring cellar gems that would be prohibitively expensive at other restaurants. Although I moved and now live some 80 miles away, Café Matisse still beckons and we go.

I'm a major foodie and dine out often. This place is excellent. I enjoyed a dining experience and I've raved to everyone I know. Absolutely fantastic!!
Been waiting for years to dine there
We looked at the menu on line and read many reviews at different sites .Our food was good, my meal was spicy hot which surprised me. As stated in many reviews the portions are small. The service was excellent by the entire staff. I would like to go again in the summer and dine in the garden.

Beat experience I've ever had at a restaurant. My boyfriend and I try and go to different restaurants weekly, and this was by far the best food and service we've had. To start, our server, Hadrian, was outstanding. He greeted us promptly and was very friendly and welcoming. He went over the menu with us and it is kind of a pre fixe menu and was delightful to talk to. He wasn't overbearing and gave us enough privacy without being inattentive. I would go back just for his service. But the food is absolutely another reason to go back. The chef is a genius and I was amazed by everything I tasted. Each dish was so creative and delightful, there wasn't one thing on the menu that I wouldn't of ordered. I even enjoyed items on the menu that I normally don't like. He is a true culinary genius. He changes the menu seasonally and I will definitely be going back to try the new menu! I would recommend this restaurant to everyone! Simply outstanding!
Great dinner. Celebrated our anniversary there and each course was better than the next. Hard to choose what not to have as everything was delicious. Lots of detail and attention paid to each dish and it showed. Service was spot on as well. Great night.
A memorable anniversary at Cafe Matisse
My girlfriend and I spent nearly (3) hours dining at Cafe Matisse in Rutherford on a Saturday night celebrating our 1st Anniversary. The service was top notch, the ambiance was very romantic and visually stimulating, and we certainly left full. The wait staff is very attentive and made several great suggestions and assisted in the ordering process. The only hitch was that we felt pressured early on to get the order in which now makes sense as the meal is served over time with time for breaks built it. We enjoyed our experience and would certainly come back for future special occasions as the menu is constantly changing as we were told. If you pay in cash you receive a 10% discount off the bill which helped as it came out to about $120 a person with tax + another $50 for tip. Thankfully this restaurant is a BYOB with no corkage fee so the damage to the pocket stopped there. Highly recommend for those seeking a high end restaurant in a low key area. Very accessible and the food was DELICIOUS !

My sister and I had dinner last year at Cafe Matisse for her birthday and we absolutely loved it. So this year I took my husband for his birthday. He's a real foodie and not very easily impressed. I could see that throughout our meal he was really enjoying himself and looking forward to each dish placed on the table. When we were talking over dessert and coffee, he said "That was outstanding". He never says that. We will be back as much as possible. Thank you!!
Great little gem
Café Matisse is a great restaurant in Rutherford. The food is amazing and it's like eating at a restaurant in NY without going in. They offer a tasking menu which allow you to pick from 3-5 courses. The service is impeccable and you will walk away satisfied by your experience. The restaurant is rather small which gives it a very special feeling. Two call outs is that parking is on the street which can be difficult in Rutherford and it is a BYOB restaurant. The good thing is if you forget there is a liquor store a couple of blocks away which a nice wine selection.
Every year I take my girlfriend here for her birthday and every year Cafe Matisse continues to impress me. The menu is always updated and the food is always delicious. The service is always great and very accommodating. The only problem is that I only go once a year!
Cafe Matisse is a unique place in that the food quality is high, the variety covers several ethnicities and it is partially hidden on a Rutherford main street....not a location you'd expect for a high-end restaurant. Since only tasting menus are offered it is difficult to find your comfort zone. It's great to visit once or twice but I doubt I'd rush back given the quality of competition at this price level.

This is out 3rd time to Cafe Matisse. Everyone time there was new items on the menu and we're just as delicious as the others .
This is a fabulous spot to enjoy great plates of food. Order as many plates as you can, preferably five, so that you can savor all that the chef has created. I understand that if you are happy, they will make a foie gras pain perdu for you at breakfast the next morning!
Love this place!
If you love tasty , creative fare this is the place to go. Menu is unique and food is outstanding. Pricey but worth it. BYOB helps keep the cost down. Service is attentive, friendly and knowledgeable.
Absolutely wonderful experience.
We loved everything from the service, to the ambiance, and the food. We heard all the positive reviews and were not disappointed. In fact the restaurant exceeded our expectations on all levels. We will definitely be back and highly recommend this restaurant.
My husband and I were celebrating our 53 wedding anniversary. We often go to Cafe Matisse for special events and are never disappointed.
Valentine's Day dinner
Absolutely incredible in every possible aspect: food, atmosphere and service/staff. My fiancée and I couldn't have been any happier with our experience, we will most definitely be coming back for years to come!
A 5-star experience
A wonderful special occasion evening with top notch food by excellent chefs. Multiple courses allow diners to try many options. All made to order. Great service.
A Transcendent Exquisite Experience
The Moroccan Room, inspired by the time Matisse spent in the country, is opulent and luxuriously comforting...one is instantly transported across time and space to a world far away. The inventive elegant dishes are sensual and ethereal, and easily compete with those served up by Daniel and Le Bernardin in the city without "breaking the bank". Service is nonpareil. Go with those you love for this is surely Paradise. Then, go again and again trying the Garden, its own special Eden, when the weather is warmer.

Wonderful food. Attentive waitstaff. Great decor. Will definitely be going back!
The food was excellent. The food combinations were unique and tasty. Choosing the dessert course was difficult with all of the great options. The 3 and 4 course offerings are a great value and makes ordering easy. The service and attention to detail was 5 star. Would highly recommend for adults with refined taste.
It is hard to say anything other than this is the best restaurant in Bergen COunty. It is beautiful, and the food and service are sublime, That makes it a great place to eat and have a very special occasion.
You are treated like a valued guest, romantic and fun, pleasant experience with great food, a little pricey but it's worth it. Everything is delicious and the staff is a lot of fun.
As usual an excellent dining experience. Service is excellent from the second you walk in the door. We did find one surprise was the noise level, a few tables were very loud. Food was perfect , we both ordered the tuna tacos which were outstanding as were everything else we were served.
great for special occasion
Excellent food but very expensive and small portions
Cafe Matisse is truly a magical dining experience. From the moment you walk through the door you are enveloped in the friendly, welcoming, romantic atmosphere of Cafe Matisse. Everyone you encounter is charming and sincere. Then there is the incredibly imaginative and delicious food. As you can see, my husband and I only have positive things to say about this unique restaurant.
Although the atmosphere was nice, the food was so over priced and not good. With tip for two people it cost $200. We left hungry and had to go get pizza
Great first time here...
We had a great first time experience here as I quietly celebrated my birthday with my family. Even though this is not a good place for the kids (there is no kids menu) but you have an option of ordering pizza from across the street, and they made it very easy. The staff and service was great! They even brought a little candle with dessert for me even though we didn't ask for it. :) It's a bit pricey but the food is outstanding.
